Tenía tiempo que no me pasaba por estos lados de manera seguida pero es que acabo de terminar esta mini serie que quiero compartirla con todos ustedes. Como ya he dicho soy una persona que le gustan de sobremanera todo lo referente a asesinos en serie y por consiguiente todo lo que tiene que ver con asesinatos en masa al punto de llegar a quedar algunos de ellos sin resolver.

It's been a while since I've been around these parts but I just finished this mini-series and I want to share it with all of you. As I have already said I am a person who likes everything related to serial killers and therefore everything that has to do with mass murders to the point of being some of them unsolved.

The serpent no es muy distinto a eso. Es una dramatización sobre un personaje bastante inteligente y astuto llamado Charles Sobhraj quien por allá en los años 70 cometió varios homicidios. La serie es exquisita porque nos enseña cosas basadas en hechos reales, es decir, TODO está fundamentado con los hechos por lo que es posible que veas cosas y capaz dudes pero no, lamentablemente todo es con base en una realidad. Sin perder más tiempo, hablemos un poco de esta gran mini serie.

The serpent is not very different from that. It is a dramatization about a rather clever and cunning character named Charles Sobhraj who back in the 70's committed several murders. The series is exquisite because it shows us things based on real facts, that is to say, EVERYTHING is based on facts so you may see things and you may doubt but no, unfortunately everything is based on reality. Without wasting any more time, let's talk about this great mini-series.

Esta historia tiene un protagonista y es esta persona, Charles Sobhraj (Tahar Rahim), un asesino y estafador de piedras preciosas o gemas que se presentaba ante sus victimas con la intención de ayudar y a hacer su estadía por aquellos países mas amena, estos destinos fueron India, Tailandia y Nepal. Todo eso lo hizo con la ayuda de quien para ese momento era su pareja, Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman); juntos fueron responsables de cometer los más viles y brutales asesinatos entre 1975 y 1976 contra turistas más que todo jóvenes originarios de Europa y Estados Unidos.

This story has a protagonist and it is this person, Charles Sobhraj (Tahar Rahim), a murderer and swindler of precious stones or gems who presented himself to his victims with the intention of helping and making their stay in those countries more enjoyable, these destinations were India, Thailand and Nepal. He did all this with the help of his partner at the time, Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman); together they were responsible for committing the most vile and brutal murders between 1975 and 1976 against mostly young tourists from Europe and the United States.

Eventualmente Charles se convirtió en uno de los criminales más buscados del mundo por la Interpol y es que su captura cada vez era más complicada porque además de matar a sus victimas les robaba sus pasaportes y documentos y con ellos escapaba realizando cambios de identidad lo que lo hizo sumamente escurridizo. Lo llamaron "La serpiente" precisamente por lo difícil que fue todo su proceso de captura.

Eventually Charles became one of the most wanted criminals in the world by Interpol and his capture was increasingly complicated because in addition to killing his victims he stole their passports and documents and with them he escaped by changing his identity, which made him extremely elusive. He was called "The Snake" precisely because of how difficult the whole process of his capture was.

Parte de que se le agotara la "suerte" a este asesino fue gracias a un diplomático holandés, Herman Knippenberg (Billy Howle), quien a mi criterio fue el verdadero héroe en toda esta historia. Fue él quien dispuso de su tiempo, que no debía, ya que era el tercer secretario de la embajada de Holanda en Tailandia y por tanto no era su trabajo pero la ética y el simple hecho de querer hacer el bien fue lo que lo impulsó a querer atrapar a este simple asesino.

Part of running out of "luck" for this assassin was thanks to a Dutch diplomat, Herman Knippenberg (Billy Howle), who in my opinion was the real hero in this whole story. It was he who disposed of his time, which he should not have, as he was the third secretary of the Dutch embassy in Thailand and therefore it was not his job but ethics and the simple fact of wanting to do good was what drove him to want to catch this simple murderer.

De las cosas que más me llamaron la atención fue la increíble ambientación de los años 70 que lograron obtener, esa magia y espíritu en el aire que se veía en aquellos años está plasmada a la perfección, hablo tanto en las locaciones como también el vestuario y hasta la música. Es una serie que tiene una narración que puede llegar a ser un poco confusa porque tiene muchos saltos en el tiempo que abarcan distintas épocas, todos relacionados eso si pero al final es posible que para algunos resulte un poco difícil de llevar.

One of the things that caught my attention was the incredible atmosphere of the 70's that they managed to get, that magic and spirit in the air that was seen in those years is captured to perfection, I speak both in the locations as well as the costumes and even the music. It is a series that has a narration that can be a little confusing because it has many jumps in time that cover different periods, all related, but in the end it is possible that for some it may be a little difficult to carry.

Dentro de la narrativa que les mencioné anteriormente tenemos dos líneas de acción que van de la mano y en paralelo. Una es la trama que llevan tanto el asesino con sus cómplices y la forma en como se relacionan con sus victimas, en este punto tenemos que destacar a Jenna Coleman quien hace de la novia de Charles ya que su personaje es complejo en un nivel psicológico, ella está en una constante lucha interna que hace que sus actuaciones sean muy acertadas.

Within the narrative that I mentioned above we have two lines of action that go hand in hand and in parallel. One is the plot that leads both the murderer and his accomplices and how they relate to their victims, at this point we have to highlight Jenna Coleman who plays Charles' girlfriend as her character is complex on a psychological level, she is in a constant internal struggle that makes her performances are very successful.

Y la segunda parte o línea es la parte investigativa quien la lleva el diplomático holandés interpretado por Billy Howle, un personaje de los mejores que tiene la serie, por no decir que el mejor. Son sus trabajos de investigación los que logran que el espectador no pierda la fe en las autoridades ya que como en casi todos estos casos esas autoridades locales o policiales resultan ser un poco incompetentes. Es tanto el afán de buscar justicia que se convierte en una parte clave para el disfrute de esta serie.

And the second part or line is the investigative part which is carried out by the Dutch diplomat played by Billy Howle, one of the best characters in the series, if not the best. It is his investigative work that keeps the viewer from losing faith in the authorities, since, as in almost all these cases, the local or police authorities turn out to be somewhat incompetent. So much is the eagerness to seek justice that it becomes a key part of the enjoyment of this series.

El protagonista, Tahar Rahim, hace un trabajo decente, es que hay momentos donde realmente detestas al personaje o no entiendes como es que siempre logra sus propósitos y eso habla de como era o es la personalidad de este asesino y de la manera en como Tahar se metió en el papel.

The main character, Tahar Rahim, does a decent job, there are moments where you really hate the character or don't understand how he always achieves his purposes and that speaks of how the personality of this murderer was or is and the way Tahar got into the role.

En conclusión tenemos una serie sobre un asesino en serie muy distinta a lo que veníamos viendo en cuanto a su formato. No estamos ante un documental donde las victimas, familiares e implicados se sientan frente a una cámara a contar como fueron los hechos, estamos ante una dramatización muy bien hecha de todo lo que pasó o pudo pasar en aquellos años. Si eres de los que les gustan este tipo de contenido pues sin duda te la recomiendo porque está muy bien elaborada, si no supieras que fue basada en hechos reales capaz pedirían una segunda temporada.

In conclusion, we have a series about a serial killer very different from what we have been seeing in terms of its format. We are not facing a documentary where the victims, family members and those involved sit in front of a camera to tell how the facts were, we are facing a very well done dramatization of everything that happened or could have happened in those years. If you are one of those who like this type of content, I certainly recommend it because it is very well made, if you did not know that it was based on real events, you would ask for a second season.
