I don't know if it's related, I think it is, but Leviticus is a book of the Bible that talks a lot about sacrifices and offerings, about social morality, the role of priests, and above all about a ritual that serves to "cleanse" people of their sins (the Day of Atonement). I say this because EVERYTHING I mentioned is reflected in this film, and that's what happens when you live in an ultra-religious Christian community where prejudice, ignorance, and fanaticism can decide people's fate. It's a horror film where the enemy is evil itself, but personified through the love and desire of two people.
No se si tendrá algo que ver, creería que si, pero el Levítico es un libro de la Biblia que habla mucho sobre sacrificios y ofrendas, sobre la moralidad social, el rol de los sacerdotes y sobretodo sobre un ritual que funciona para "limpiar" los pecados de las personas (Día de la Expiación). Esto lo digo porque TODO lo que mencioné está plasmado en esta película y es que es lo que tiene vivir en una comunidad ultra religiosa cristiana en donde los prejuicios, la ignorancia y el fanatismo pueden decidir el destino de las personas. Es un film de terror en donde el enemigo es el propio mal pero personificado a través del amor y del deseo de dos personas.
This story begins with Naim (Joe Bird) and Ryan (Stacy Clausen), two teenagers living in a small Australian town characterized by its closed-minded and conservative religious practices. The problem is that they fall in love, which, given their community, is considered a sin. When their parents and acquaintances find out, they subject them to a conversion ritual, believing it to be the solution. However, this far from helping them actually opens a door to a violent entity with a unique ability: it can take the form of the person they love or desire most—in other words, each other.
Esta historia empieza con Naim (Joe Bird) y Ryan (Stacy Clausen), dos adolescentes que viven en un pueblo en Australia que tiene la particularidad de que son personas cerradas y conservadoras gracias a sus practicas religiosas. El tema es que ellos se enamoran cosa que por el sitio en donde viven es literalmente un pecado. Al enterarse los padres y conocidos deciden actuar y los someten a un ritual de conversión creyendo que esa es la solución pero nada más alejado de la realidad. Resulta que aquello más allá de hacer algo por ellos lo que terminó generando fue que alguna puerta se abriera para dar aparición a un ente sumamente violento que tiene una particularidad: adopta la forma de la persona que más quieren o desean, es decir, uno del otro.
From this point on, the lives of these two young people are never the same, as they live in terror of being stalked by this entity and with the paranoia of not knowing who is truly beside them, because distinguishing them is so difficult. The film itself is a demonstration that love can be a punishment, and it explores why this entity, whose nature—whether demon or ghost—is unclear, precisely adopts the form of the other person. As I see it, it's cruel because it instills fear and the need to distance oneself from the other; this is exactly why the ritual exists and why they perform it. Because, being homosexual, these relationships are terribly frowned upon, and they resort to these kinds of spells so that the affected individuals will definitively abandon those desires.
A partir de aquí la vida de estos dos jóvenes no vuelve a ser la misma ya que viven con el terror de ser acechado por esta entidad y por la paranoia de no saber quien verdaderamente está al lado de ellos porque distinguirlos es complicado. La película en si es una muestra de que el propio amor puede ser un castigo y el trasfondo del porque este ente, que no sabe bien que es, si un demonio o un fantasma, adopta precisamente la forma de la otra persona. Según lo veo es una crueldad porque te inyecta el miedo y la necesidad de apartarte del otro; es exactamente por eso que ese ritual existe y lo hacen, porque al ser personas homosexuales está terriblemente mal visto esas relaciones y apelan este tipo de conjuros para que así las personas afectadas se alejen definitivamente de esos deseos.
That's why this film is so highly regarded; using horror in a way that's not usually done is cool, and it's very well made. The fear doesn't come from images or jump scares, although it does have a couple, but rather from the suspense of not knowing who's who, the intrigue of not knowing who they're talking to. And if we add to that the violent nature of this entity, there's even more apprehension. As for the gore, one would think that because it's so violent, there would be more, but that's not the case. It's true that one particular scene is quite hard to watch, but nothing alarming; I think everything is in just the right measure. As I said, the terror and horror are more in the substance than in the style.
De ahí al porque está película está tan bien valorada, usar el terror de una manera en la que generalmente no se usa está cool además de que está muy bien hecha. El miedo no radica en imágenes ni escenas de sustos, que si tiene un par, sino más bien en el suspenso de no saber quien es quien, de la intriga del no saber con quien están hablando. Y si a esto le sumamos la naturaleza violenta que tiene esta entidad pues más aprehensión hay. En cuanto al gore uno pensaría que por ser tan violento todo habría más pero tampoco, si que es verdad que una escena en particular es bien dura de ver pero nada alarmante; creo que todo está en la justa medida, como ya dije, el terror y el horror es más en el fondo que en la forma.
In the end, we obviously also see issues of homophobia, contempt, and profound ignorance within these religious communities—nothing new we don't already know. But it's not just about sexuality; it extends to what parents can do because of this fanaticism, just to fit in or follow the dictates of the majority. It's an ingenious film, not quite on par with Obsession, but it's still a good effort. Giving horror a different face shows that there are other ways to be effective with this genre without resorting to clichés. A very good film that I highly recommend; it's different. The only downside is that it takes a little while to get going because it focuses heavily on establishing the characters' context, but once it does, it's very effective. I'll leave the trailer here. It's under an hour and a half long. Recommended.
Al final obviamente también vemos que hay un tema de homofobia, desprecio y profunda ignorancia dentro de estas comunidades religiosas, nada nuevo que no sepamos. Pero no solo por el tema sexual sino hasta por lo que los padres pueden llegar hacer gracias a este fanatismo con tal de quedar bien o por seguir las directrices de una mayoría. Es un film ingenioso, no está a la altura de Obsession pero hay que decir que es un buen trabajo. Darle otra cara al terror es entender que hay otras maneras de ser efectivo con este genero sin la necesidad de caer en clichés. Una muy buena película que recomiendo mucho, es diferente. Lo unico malo es que tarda un poco en arrancar porque se enfoca muy bien en dar contexto de los personajes pero una vez lo hace, es muy efectiva. Les dejo el tráiler por acá. Dura menos de hora y media. Recomendada.
