This is one of those franchises that, without making much noise, has managed to endure over time while remaining interesting, relevant, and entertaining. There have been three films so far—released in 2013, 2016, and 2025—with the latest being the one we are discussing today. Releasing the third installment nearly a decade later could have been a risky move, but in reality, it wasn't; on the contrary, the success and reception were such that work began on a fourth chapter in the saga. With a story blending magic, illusionism, deception, and a quest for justice—as the characters view themselves as a sort of modern-day Robin Hood—combined with a top-tier cast, it is a franchise that is unlikely to be poor in quality or unwatchable. Its longevity confirms this.
Esta franquicia es de esas que sin hacer mucho ruido han logrado mantenerse en el tiempo siendo interesante, relevante y divertida de ver. Son tres películas hasta ahora, 2013, 2016 y 2025 han sido los años de sus estrenos siendo la última de la que vamos a hablar hoy. Creo que pudo haber sido arriesgado sacar la tercera parte casi 10 años después pero la realidad es que no lo fue, al contrario, fue tal el éxito y aceptación que dio pie a que se comenzara a trabajar en la cuarta parte de esta saga. Una historia en donde la magia, el ilusionismo, el engaño, la busqueda de la justicia y es que ellos se auto perciben como una especie de Robin Hood modernos, y que además de todo esto cuente con un elenco muy top, es una que difícilmente sea mala de ver o de baja calidad. La continuidad en el tiempo lo confirma.
The third installment blends the "old" with the new, reflecting how much has changed over the past decade. The film opens with three new illusionists performing a show in the style of the Four Horsemen—a new generation that idolizes those very four individuals. After these talented young performers are introduced, Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) appears to inform them of a new job, a new mission, and the fact that they have been recruited by "The Eye," the secret organization of magicians and illusionists. Initially, the new members show some resistance to change, but this gradually fades as trust develops among the group and the original Horsemen begin to appear.
La tercera entrega es una mezcla de lo "viejo" con lo actual y es que en 10 años muchas cosas han cambiado. El film comienza con 3 nuevos ilusionistas haciendo un show al estilo de los 4 jinetes, una nueva generación cuyos ídolos son precisamente estas 4 personas. Habiendo sido presentados estos talentosos jóvenes el primero en aparecérseles es Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) para informales que hay un nuevo trabajo, una nueva misión y que ellos han sido reclutados por "El Ojo", esta organización secreta de magos e ilusionistas. Al principio vemos como que hay una resistencia a los cambios por parte de los nuevos integrantes que con el tiempo se irá disipando conforme la confianza entre todos empiece a fluir y vayan apareciendo el resto de los antiguos jinetes.
In theory, this is their biggest and most important mission yet, so the stakes are high. They must expose the true identity and intentions of Veronika Vanderberg (Rosamund Pike), a powerful figure in the criminal underworld who uses diamonds to help launder money for countless criminals and terrorists across the globe. How will they pull it off? By using magic tricks and playing the illusionists they are. At the heart of it all is a massive diamond valued at $500 million; stealing it to return it to its rightful owner is one of their key objectives. One of the cool things about these movies is how entertaining they make everything; the way they execute their tricks is incredible—you’re left feeling like a child witnessing magic for the very first time. Then, when they explain how they did it, it becomes even more impressive, because things are definitely not always what they seem.
En teoría esta misión es la más grande e importante que han hecho por lo que el riesgo es alto. Tienen que exponer la verdadera identidad e intenciones de Veronika Vanderberg (Rosamund Pike) quien es una mujer muy poderosa en el mundo criminal ya que ella posee diamantes con los que ayuda a lavar el dinero de cualquier cantidad de criminales y terroristas en el mundo. Como lo van a hacer? - pues con trucos de magia y siendo los ilusionistas que son. El centro de todo es un diamante inmenso tasado en 500 millones, robarlo para entregarlo a quien pertenece realmente es uno de los objetivos de ellos. De las cosas cool que tienen estas películas es que todo lo hacen entretenido, la forma en como llevan a cabo todos sus trucos es increíble, uno queda como el niño que ve magia por primera vez. Después explican como lo hicieron es más impresionante todavía porque definitivamente no todo es lo que parece.
It is an action-packed film, though not the kind we are used to; it is the sort where something is constantly happening. I really liked how they incorporated "escape room" concepts into some scenes—trends that are very popular right now. All the tricks are impressive; if you haven't seen these movies, it’s somewhat similar to the Ocean's Eleven heist at the Las Vegas casino, but here they rely on sleight of hand and deception—they genuinely fool the audience. I have to admit that, of the three films, this one appealed to me the least. I’m not saying it’s bad—it certainly isn't—but the second one was my favorite. The blend of the two generations is cool; they compete with each other at times, which is natural, but as I mentioned, they ultimately unite to ensure everything goes according to plan. The younger cast takes center stage—I feel the weight of the film rests on them. It isn't exactly a "passing of the torch," but there is a necessary balance.
Es un film lleno de acción pero no la que conocemos, es una en donde siempre están pasando cosas. Me gustó mucho que para algunas escenas usaron el concepto de los "Escape Room", cosas que están muy de moda ahora. Todos los trucos son impresionantes, si no has visto estas películas es algo parecido a Ocean's Eleven cuando roban el casino de Las Vegas pero acá usan trucos y engaños; de verdad engañan al espectador. Debo decir que de las tres películas esta es la que menos me llamó la atención, no estoy diciendo que sea mala, no lo es en ningún concepto, pero la segunda fue mi favorita. La combinación entre las dos generaciones es algo cool, a veces compiten entre ellos pero es normal, como dije al final hay una unión para que todo salga como se espera. El protagonismo se lo llevan los jóvenes, creo que el peso del film recae sobre ellos; no es un pase de antorcha pero si hay un equilibrio necesario.
The cast is massive: Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Morgan Freeman, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, and the aforementioned Eisenberg and Pike. They are all charismatic and fully inhabit their roles, bringing out distinct personalities that they have managed to maintain—and portray convincingly—even ten years later. Naturally, there are a few absurd moments—the kind that inevitably crop up in movies of this genre where the unthinkable happens. It’s not bothersome or over-the-top, but it is noticeable. There is no chance of getting bored with this plot, especially given the twists. I want to emphasize this point, as it is one of the most important aspects of these films—arguably their signature feature. At the end of the movie, a truly unexpected revelation always occurs—one that fits perfectly with the story's background. These are things you don't see coming, and they add great depth to the plot; I’d go so far as to say that once the reveal happens, you understand and appreciate the film in a whole new light. The ending hints that a fourth installment is on the way—something I already mentioned. I highly recommend this film and the other two; they are very entertaining. It runs for less than two hours. El elenco es masivo, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Morgan Freeman, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo y los ya mencionados Eisemberg y Pike. Todos carismáticos y muy mimetizados con sus personajes porque todos ellos tienen sus propias personalidades que incluso 10 años después han sabido interpretar. Obviamente tiene sus cositas absurdas que como toda película de este estilo en donde lo impensable sucede terminan pasando. No es algo que moleste ni que sea exagerado pero si se nota. No hay manera de que ver esta trama sea algo aburrido, sobretodo por los plot twist que tiene. Quiero hacer hincapié acá y esto es de las cosas más importantes de estas películas, diría que es su firma. Al final del film siempre se revela algo que realmente es inesperado, muy acorde al trasfondo de la historia; son cosas que uno no ve venir y que le dan una profundidad grande a la trama, me atrevería a decir que después de que se revela lo que sea la película se entiende y se aprecia de otra forma. La forma en como termina esta da entender que viene la cuarta parte, cosa que ya les había dicho. Muy recomendada este film y los otros dos, son muy entretenidos. Menos de dos horas dura.
