Últimamente ver series extrañas, que en ciertos puntos sean inexplicables, complicadas de entender pero sobre todo que te lleguen a sorprender por todas esas características parece que se está convirtiendo en mi pasatiempo predilecto. Outer Range, uno de los nuevos títulos que nos presenta la gente de Amazon, es el vivo ejemplo de todo eso. La verdad es que siempre ando buscando nuevas series que ver y da la "casualidad" que de forma reiterada me consigo con estas joyas de las cuales nadie está hablando y no entiendo por qué, me pasó igualmente con Shining Girls, es por eso que hoy vuelvo y les digo: vean esta serie en lo que tengan oportunidad, no tiene desperdicio.
Lately, watching strange series, that at certain points are inexplicable, complicated to understand but above all that surprise you with all these characteristics seems to be becoming my favorite pastime. Outer Range, one of the new titles presented by Amazon, is the living example of all that. The truth is that I'm always looking for new series to watch and it "happens" that I repeatedly come across these gems that no one is talking about and I don't understand why, it happened to me with Shining Girls, that's why today I come back and tell you: watch this series when you have the chance, it's not to be missed.
Outer Range tiene muchas cosas a su favor, una buena premisa, una trama que puede llegar a ser muy inquietante, un elenco bastante solido la verdad pero además cuenta con un toque de misterio, suspenso a lo desconocido pero acompañado también con problemas totalmente terrenales y banales. Hay que decir que ver a Josh Brolin en una serie es un plus que pocas veces se nos da el chance de ver, es decir, estamos hablando del mismísimo Thanos, por lo que si, es otra de las cosas por las que vale la pena ver esta serie. Outer Range me sorprendió para bien y es por eso que hoy vengo a hablarles un poco de ella así que vamos entonces a ver de que trata...
Outer Range has many things in its favor, a good premise, a plot that can become very disturbing, a pretty solid cast but also has a touch of mystery, suspense to the unknown but also accompanied with totally earthly and banal problems. It must be said that seeing Josh Brolin in a series is a plus that we rarely get the chance to see, I mean, we're talking about Thanos himself, so yes, it's another thing that makes this series worth watching. Outer Range surprised me for good and that's why today I come to tell you a little about it, so let's see what it's about...
Lo primero a decir es que estamos ante un western con todas sus letras por lo que toda su ambientación está enmarcada en ese sentido, pero de que va? - pues vamos a ello. Es la historia de Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) y toda su familia, unos rancheros que viven obviamente en su rancho en las tierras salvajes de Wyoming, Royal vive con su esposa, dos hijos y una nieta. Es la típica familia que tiene un arraigo muy fuerte por sus tierras ya que la misma ha pasado de generación en generación por lo que lo único que hacen es cuidar y mantener su ganado y tratar de que el núcleo familiar esté siempre unido. Pero todo esto cambia, esta vida tranquila se convierte en zozobra cuando Royal descubre que dentro de sus tierras hay "algo" tan fuera de este mundo y tan profundo que su mente y sus ojos no son capaces de asimilar.

It is the story of Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) and his family, ranchers who obviously live on their ranch in the wilderness of Wyoming, Royal lives with his wife, two children and a granddaughter. It is the typical family that has a very strong attachment to their land as it has been passed from generation to generation so all they do is take care and maintain their livestock and try to keep the family together. But all this changes, this quiet life turns into anxiety when Royal discovers that inside his land there is "something" so out of this world and so deep that his mind and eyes are not able to assimilate.
A todo esto también hay que sumarle que los Abbott tienen unos vecinos rancheros igualmente, los Tillerson, quienes son increíblemente ambiciosos y que están detrás de algo muy importante para Royal, un pedazo de sus tierras, lo que desembocará conflictos entre las familias. Pero por si todo esto no fuera poco también hay asesinatos, desapariciones y una extraña visitante, Autumm (Imogen Poots), que llenará de tensión un ambiente que ya de por si viene cargado. Como ven es una historia que si nos ponemos a ver lo tiene todo para llamar la atención y enganchar a cualquiera tal y como lo hizo conmigo.
In addition to all this, the Abbotts also have some rancher neighbors, the Tillersons, who are incredibly ambitious and are after something very important to Royal, a piece of their land, which will lead to conflicts between the families. As you can see, it is a story that if we get to see it has everything to catch the attention and hook anyone as it did with me.
Esta serie empieza de una forma muy trepidante, con una escena que al verla claramente te generará muchas dudas y preguntas las cuales serán medio respondidas a lo largo de ese primer capitulo. Y es que así es básicamente toda la historia en sus ocho episodios, una serie de sucesos que no tienen ningún tipo de sentido lógico pero que tampoco la serie te trata de explicar del todo y es que hay una razón detrás de esto que se las digo más adelante. No sabría como catalogar esta trama porque estoy seguro que paranormal no es, no me da la sensación de que por ahí vaya la cosa pero si puede que sea algo sobrenatural sin ninguna duda. Cuando la comiencen a ver se darán cuenta de ello, verán como van a estar más confundidos a medida que los capítulos avanzan y por más que se quiera buscar entender esos fenómenos me temo que no será posible.
This series begins in a very exciting way, with a scene that when you see it clearly will generate many doubts and questions which will be half answered throughout the first chapter. And this is basically the whole story in its eight episodes, a series of events that do not make any kind of logical sense but that the series does not try to explain at all and there is a reason behind this that I will tell you later. I wouldn't know how to catalog this plot because I'm sure it's not paranormal, I don't have the feeling that it's something supernatural without any doubt. When you start watching it you will realize it, you will see how you will be more confused as the chapters progress and no matter how much you want to try to understand these phenomena I am afraid it will not be possible.
Pero no todo lo que Outer Range nos ofrece está rodeado de misterio, como dije tenemos problemas familiares, problemas con la ley, problemas de amor, etc. Lo que involucra el asesinato es un extra muy bueno porque la da un condimento a la trama que alimenta todo lo que en estos ranchos sucede, lo que eventualmente genera más tensión, riñas, odio y hasta la misma venganza; recuerden que son familias rivales que tienen muchos años conviviendo quizás en contra de su voluntad. A la larga toda esta situación llevará al colapso a muchos miembros de estas familias lo que para mi es un poco impresionante porque vemos como esos personajes cambian totalmente, se vuelven completos desconocidos a lo que inicialmente vimos y esto es gracias a la desesperación, rabia, desconcierto, duda, frustraciones, etc. Un coctel de emociones que no escapan de esta trama tan interesante.
But not everything that Outer Range offers us is surrounded by mystery, as I said we have family problems, problems with the law, love problems, etc. What involves murder is a very good extra because it gives a spice to the plot that feeds everything that happens in these ranches, which eventually generates more tension, quarrels, hatred and even revenge; remember that they are rival families who have many years living together perhaps against their will. Eventually this whole situation will lead to the collapse of many members of these families which for me is a bit impressive because we see how these characters change completely, they become complete strangers to what we initially saw and this is thanks to despair, anger, bewilderment, doubt, frustrations, etc.. A cocktail of emotions that do not escape from this interesting plot.
En cuanto a la cinematografía es un verdadero espectáculo, nada que envidiarle a una producción de cine. Grandes escenarios naturales con unos buenos efectos visuales que a pesar de ser una historia del estilo western, cuidaron mucho esos aspectos, me recuerda un poco a la película The Power of the Dog con todas esas montañas y llanuras al aire libre. La verdad es que en ese aspecto es un 10. Otra de las cosas que también me llamaron la atención es su banda sonora, muchas veces este elemento es olvidado de mencionar (me pasa casi siempre) pero en esta oportunidad no lo quiero hacer. Lo musical es algo que te envuelve cuando las escenas lo piden y hace que te adentres más a la historia y aquí en Outer Range lo consiguen, esos pasajes inentendibles siempre están acompañados de una buena pieza musical llena de tensión.
As for the cinematography, it is a real spectacle, nothing to envy to a movie production. Great natural scenery with good visual effects that despite being a western style story, they took great care of those aspects, it reminds me a bit of the movie The Power of the Dog with all those mountains and plains outdoors. The truth is that in that aspect it is a 10. Another thing that also caught my attention is its soundtrack, many times this element is forgotten to mention (it happens to me almost always) but in this opportunity I don't want to do it. The music is something that surrounds you when the scenes ask for it and makes you go deeper into the story and here in Outer Range they achieve it, those unintelligible passages are always accompanied by a good piece of music full of tension.
Pero hablemos un poco de los personajes. Josh Brolin junto con Imogen Poots son los que llevan el peso de esta historia, todo gira entorno a ellos. El primero es el ranchero duro que va a hacer todo lo que esté a su alcance con tal de proteger a los suyos y sus tierras, sin importar lo que esto le pueda ocasionar a él, tanto física como mentalmente. Llevar un secreto puede ser agotador y Brolin lo hace ver verdaderamente doloroso, le inyecta un buen drama al personaje lo que confirma lo buen actor que es. Y la segunda es una viajera un tanto peculiar que llega al rancho, de buenas a primeras nos damos cuenta que tiene un gran secreto encima pero también una gran desesperación, hay algo que la atormenta y nunca se sabe que es. A Imogen la ultima vez que la vi fue en la película The Father de Anthony Hopkins y allí me llamo la atención, acá de igual forma tampoco me dejó indiferente. Un personaje muy raro.
But let's talk a little bit about the characters. Josh Brolin along with Imogen Poots are the ones who carry the weight of this story, everything revolves around them. The former is the tough rancher who will do everything in his power to protect his people and his land, no matter what it may do to him, both physically and mentally. Carrying a secret can be exhausting and Brolin makes it look truly painful, he injects good drama into the character which confirms what a good actor he is. And the second is a somewhat peculiar traveler who arrives at the ranch, right off the bat we realize that she has a big secret on her but also a great despair, there is something that torments her and you never know what it is. The last time I saw Imogen was in the film The Father with Anthony Hopkins and there she caught my attention, here she didn't leave me indifferent either. A very strange character.
Hay otros personajes por ahí interesantes como Perry Abbott (Tom Pelphrey) quien si no lo recuerdan era el hermano de Wendy Byrde en Ozark y Cecilia Abbott (Lili Taylor) quien es la esposa de Royal y que hace un gran papel, el drama y sufrimiento de estos dos personajes hicieron que los mencionara. Al final fue un muy buen casting porque son actores y actrices con ciertas tablas y eso se nota con sus actuaciones dentro de esta serie.
There are other interesting characters out there like Perry Abbott (Tom Pelphrey) who if you don't remember was Wendy Byrde's brother in Ozark and Cecilia Abbott (Lili Taylor) who is Royal's wife and who plays a great role, the drama and suffering of these two characters made me mention them. In the end it was a very good casting because they are actors and actresses with certain tables and that shows with their performances within this series.
Por que no explican todo en la serie? - pues porque da para pensar que habrá una segunda temporada o por lo menos quiero creer eso. La cantidad de cabos sueltos y cosas quedaron en el aire es tal que es tonto pensar que no habrá una continuación pero con estos proyectos nunca se sabe. De todas maneras es una serie que merece ser vista 100% ya que es rara y es de las que te ponen a pensar desde el minuto uno.
Why don't they explain everything in the series? - Because it gives to think that there will be a second season or at least I want to believe that. The amount of loose ends and things left in the air is such that it is silly to think that there will not be a continuation but with these projects you never know. Anyway it is a series that deserves to be seen 100% because it is rare and is one of those that make you think from minute one.
