Today I come with something that is certainly new and different from what one is usually used to see, it is not the typical American production full of special effects and great visuals or the science fiction story that blows our minds, nothing like that, this time I come with a series that really surprised me a lot and always did it for the best. In Star Plus we find the story of one of the most iconic and controversial characters that has had the contemporary history of Mexico and why not, of Latin America itself, a man who, as in many countries of our continent, took justice into his own hands in the name of a revolution.
The word "revolution" for many of us sounds heavy and generates some noise in our psyche because it is generally not associated with anything good and as we will see with the story of the rise of Francisco Villa we will realize that it is not such a lie. It is a very well made series, with good locations, setting, costumes, performances, it has one or another special effect that is interesting but above all it is full of history, that which is so necessary to know in order not to repeat the mistakes of the past. Being a fan of general culture, I had to see this production and I was very pleased, it is worth it. But well, without further ado, let's talk a little about what this particular series has to offer.
As it is obvious this is the story of Pancho Villa (Jorge Jimenez) or as his real name was Doroteo Arango Arámbula which he changed it to be able to go unnoticed and commit all kinds of crimes. The plot of his life begins when he was just a teenager and worked in the hacienda of a landowner or foreman until he had problems of authority and had to flee from that place. It is there, in that constant fleeing, when he begins to form who Francisco Villa was, a man who at the beginning had to do many questionable things in order to survive. Along the way, he meets people with whom, as time and years go by, he forges relationships that in the end will serve to build the revolution that would come later.
Little by little he is gaining followers because they see him as a kind of Robin Hood, in fact many of these "revolutionaries" perceive themselves as such, a person who is going to oppose the real power and those who have the most, in this case the "perfumed", as he called them, to take the side of the people, of the common people. Under this pretext Villa made a name for himself, one that was quite uncomfortable for all the politicians of the country, presidents included, because we are talking about someone who had more than 30 thousand men at his disposal. In the end, this caudillo managed to move heaven and earth so that his ideals and his way of seeing the country could be heard, but it was not enough. The story ends with his death and the legacy he left behind in a Mexico that was very convulsed at the time.
One of the things that I am going to highlight and that caught my attention is that the series besides focusing on everything that has to do with the armed struggle and the rawness of the war sought to show the most human side of Villa with his defects and virtues, not in the sense of saying if he was a good person or not, but rather in everything related to his fears, insecurities, doubts, beliefs; there were many chapters where we saw that, a guy who came to be deeply disturbed and that his inner demons came out in the middle of the night. They tried to mix all this with an esoteric or even paranormal theme and it was a touch that I liked because it was like a door to understand a little bit how things were in those times and of course, to know more about Mexican culture.
As I already said, the top of the series is all the recreation they achieved, all the war sets, all the setting and costumes, the truth is that it was a pleasure to see that they took care of many details so that the final product is optimal and of high quality. The explosions, the period weapons used and even the amount of extras were things that injected an incredible realism that made the experience complete. I honestly thought I was going to get tired halfway through the series but nothing could be further from the truth because in addition to everything mentioned, the series is an important drama, both for Villa's personal life and for everything that came with being at the head of a movement in the north of the country.
And that brings me to the third thing I want to mention. The whole series is strategy after strategy, both military and political, there was always something to be aware of, whether it was the president's positions, loyalties but also how to move the pieces on a board where everywhere you looked there were clashes, enemies moving from one side to the other, and so on. Evidently many of the things are fiction but the vast majority are not and if something left me crazy was how immensely corrupt was the power in those times, politicians will always be that, people who seek the best for their personal interests; no doubt this series I saw it as a good class in contemporary history. I assure you that you will not get bored, many things happen at the same time that will invite you to stay watching one more episode, it is a fascinating story, no matter how crazy it is.
The characters is another thing that gives a lot of value to the series. Not being Mexican I do not know the connotation and what Pancho Villa means to them or how they perceive him but I feel that the character is very well achieved, not if the level of imitation is correct but I really liked the characterization, I saw him very sober. The secondary characters such as Fierro, General Urbina and President Carranza also have to get their share of recognition, especially the first two, very interesting. What happens with this type of productions is that in some cases they tend to caricature the characters because they fail to find the essence, here I feel that was not the case, I saw a lot of level and seriousness in everything.
An 8/10, the series is very good. Beyond the fact that you may not like the theme, the genre or the story I think it is very worth watching, all aspects, in my opinion are well done. It consists of 10 episodes of a little less than 50 minutes each and is available on Star+. I leave the trailer below.
