Por qué me hago esa pregunta? - siempre ha habido una especie de creencia o pensar en la gente de que este actor, Nicolas Cage, no ha sido capaz de hacer films de calidad, de hecho ha sido una matriz de opinión durante muchos años y que la verdad no se yo si es muy real que digamos. Películas como Lord of War, Contracara o La Roca son trabajos bastantes decentes de él y que en su momento me gustaron mucho, es verdad que no todo lo que brilla es oro, pero de ahí a sepultar toda su filmografía me parece algo drástico. En esta oportunidad estamos ante un papel que cuando me entere de más o menos lo que iba a ser podían pasar dos cosas, o ser algo sorprendentemente bueno o algo tan terrorífico como su aspecto en esta historia.

Films like Lord of War, Contracara or The Rock are pretty decent works of him and that at the time I liked a lot, it is true that not all that glitters is gold, but from there to bury his entire filmography seems to me something drastic. This time we are facing a role that when I found out more or less what it was going to be, two things could happen, or be something surprisingly good or something as terrifying as his appearance in this story.

Renfield, para los que no saben, es una película que combina el terror, la comedia y un aspecto que me dejó un poco con la boca abierta, la acción de la mano con unas cantidades absurdas de sangre. Pero es que claro, como no va a haber sangre si estamos ante el propio Conde Drácula? - se que es bastante obvio pero la referencia va llevada a las escenas de acción, de peleas cuerpo a cuerpo de las que somos testigos en esta historia. Es un film que me sorprendió de grata manera, hay que decir, porque muy honestamente esperaba una mediocridad pero resultó siendo una producción mínimamente decente. Sin más, hablemos un poco entonces de lo que es esta moderna historia de Drácula y su fiel ayudante.

Renfield, for those who don't know, is a film that combines horror, comedy and an aspect that left me a little open-mouthed, action hand in hand with absurd amounts of blood. But of course, how can there not be blood if we are in front of Count Dracula himself? - I know it's quite obvious but the reference is taken to the action scenes, of hand to hand fights that we witness in this story. It's a film that pleasantly surprised me, I must say, because I was honestly expecting mediocrity but it turned out to be a decent production. Without further ado, let's talk a bit then about what this modern tale of Dracula and his faithful assistant is all about.

Como bien dice el nombre de la película esta trama se centra en Renfield, el fiel y leal ayudante de Drácula. Un hombre que está bajó el "poder" de uno de los personajes más ególatras y narcisista de la historia y que a pesar de los siglos y siglos de servicio sigue siendo tratado como de las peores maneras que se pueden imaginar. Pero todo tiene un limite y parece que Renfield llegó a el y es que cansado de todo decide tratar de buscar como sería una vida alejado de su amo y descubrir un mundo en donde deje de ser un ente de maldad ya que parte de su trabajo es buscarle victimas a Drácula para que este, como buen vampiro, se pueda alimentar y recuperar sus fuerzas.

As the name of the movie says, this plot focuses on Renfield, Dracula's faithful and loyal assistant. A man who is under the "power" of one of the most egomaniacal and narcissistic characters in history and that despite centuries and centuries of service continues to be treated as the worst ways you can imagine. But everything has a limit and it seems that Renfield has reached it and he is tired of everything and decides to try to find a life away from his master and discover a world where he is no longer an evil entity since part of his job is to find victims for Dracula so that he, as a good vampire, can feed and regain his strength.

Pero que pasa? - pues que hasta ese momento es una película más solo que en esta oportunidad hay una tangente. Renfield, buscando solución a sus problemas, comienza a asistir a terapias grupales y de apoyo porque al final del día no es más que una relación toxica la que está sufriendo y es gracias a eso, por cosas que claramente no voy a decir porque serían spoilers, que termina involucrado en una red criminal que dirige la ciudad. A partir de acá la historia sigue su curso en donde narcotraficantes, mafiosos, policías, Drácula con su sed de sangre y poder y el propio Renfield en el medio se unen para dar paso una película llena de mucha acción, más de la que esperaba, y una especie de mensaje final muy terapéutico-emocional, que creo es uno de los puntos principales de la trama.

Renfield, looking for a solution to his problems, begins to attend group therapy and support because at the end of the day it is nothing more than a toxic relationship that is suffering and it is thanks to that, for things that clearly I will not say because it would be spoilers, he ends up involved in a criminal network that runs the city. From here the story follows its course where drug dealers, gangsters, cops, Dracula with his thirst for blood and power and Renfield himself in the middle come together to give way to a film full of a lot of action, more than I expected, and a kind of very therapeutic-emotional final message, which I think is one of the main points of the plot.

La película es extrañamente buena y divertida, estoy seguro para los que la vieron y los que aún no que fue o será algo que no se esperan. Tiene altas dosis de comedia pero es un humor bizarro a veces y otras es hasta un poco tonto por diferentes escenas, diálogos, interpretaciones, formas en la que los personajes están construidos; es algo bastante absurdo si me lo preguntan pero que al final logra el cometido el cual es que te rías, la pases bien y no te aburras. Hay terror? - si terror es el brutal aspecto de Drácula, las cantidades sin sentido de sangre que hay y todos los desmembramientos y decapitaciones que existen entonces si, es un terror en todas sus líneas y aspectos.

The movie is strangely good and funny, I'm sure for those who saw it and those who haven't yet that it was or will be something they don't expect. It has high doses of comedy but it is a bizarre humor at times and others is even a little silly for different scenes, dialogues, interpretations, ways in which the characters are built; it is something quite absurd if you ask me but in the end it achieves its purpose which is that you laugh, have a good time and do not get bored. Is there terror? - If horror is the brutal appearance of Dracula, the senseless amounts of blood and all the dismemberments and decapitations then yes, it is horror in all its lines and aspects.

Otro punto relevante es la acción y es de las cosas que más disfruté. Renfield es un tipo que ha vivido siglos gracias a Drácula y que además posee poderes de super humano, esto hace que tenga unas habilidades especiales muy notorias que le permite realizar todo lo que se ven estas acción muy bien logradas. Es una especie de Blade con John Wick, guardando las distancias, pero que de verdad a uno como espectador le genera esa sensación de no querer dejar de ver porque son altamente entretenidas y sangrientas. Esto último creo que es la guinda del pastel ya que le da un toque extra en lo visual que hace que las peleas sean mucho más vistosas, obviamente, pero manteniendo cierta calidad, porque si, son escenas muy sincronizadas, no es algo tan mediocre como se puede pensar.

Renfield is a guy who has lived for centuries thanks to Dracula and who also has super human powers, this makes him have some very noticeable special abilities that allow him to perform everything you see these very well done action. It is a kind of Blade with John Wick, keeping the distances, but that really as a viewer generates that feeling of not wanting to stop watching because they are highly entertaining and bloody. The latter I think is the icing on the cake because it gives an extra visual touch that makes the fights much more colorful, obviously, but maintaining a certain quality, because yes, they are very synchronized scenes, it is not something as mediocre as you might think.

Y por ultimo y no menos importante hay un factor emocional acá. Como dije este oprimido ayudante empieza a ir a terapia para superar y dejar ir su relación toxica y laboral con Drácula, en esas conversaciones se llega a conclusiones que pueden servirle a muchas a personas fuera de la pantalla que estén pasando algo parecido. No es una película totalmente vacía, busca dejarte algo más allá del disfrute sangriento y cómico que puede haber, no es algo tampoco digno de alabanzas pero se agradece que quieran darle un poco más de profundidad y trama al film. Vuelvo y repito, no era algo que me esperaba y terminó siendo un producto que se puede ver sin problemas.

As I said this downtrodden assistant begins to go to therapy to overcome and let go of his toxic and working relationship with Dracula, in those conversations he comes to conclusions that can be useful to many people off screen who are going through something similar. It is not a totally empty film, it seeks to leave you something beyond the bloody and comic enjoyment that can be, it is not something worthy of praise either but it is appreciated that they want to give a little more depth and plot to the film. Again and again, it was not something I expected and ended up being a product that can be seen without problems.

Nicolas Cage hay que decir que estuvo magnifico, todas sus escenas y expresiones fueron un completo diez. El personaje es eso, un tipo muy dependiente de su ayudante y con una maldad infinita pero que en este caso también hay que incluir una capacidad para hacer reír con cosas sin sentido y hasta ridículas. En lo personal más que miedo, que puede que de, a mi lo que me generaba era gracia verlo, pero no a nivel de burla sino una genuina, creo que Cage entendió muy bien el papel y lo que quería transmitir. Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) tambine estuvo a la altura, sobre todo en las escenas de acción en las que participó, que fueron casi toda, cumplió con creces. Es un tipo más bueno que el pan pero que fue obligado a adoptar una aptitud negativa que más tarde que temprano decidió cambiar.

Nicolas Cage was magnificent, all his scenes and expressions were a complete ten. The character is just that, a guy very dependent on his assistant and with an infinite evil but in this case we must also include an ability to make people laugh with nonsense and even ridiculous things. Personally, more than fear, which may be, what I found funny was to see him, but not at the level of mockery but a genuine one, I think Cage understood the role very well and what he wanted to convey. Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) was also up to the task, especially in the action scenes in which he participated, which were almost all, he more than fulfilled. He is a nicer guy than bread but was forced to adopt a negative attitude that sooner or later he decided to change.

Un film al que le doy un 7.5/10 porque llegué con las expectativas muy bajas y resultó ser un descubrimiento decente y bueno. Nicolas Cage estuvo muy top, escenas de acción de alto nivel, mucha sangre, demasiada diría yo, partes del cuerpo volando y explotando por todos lados, un buen mensaje final, en fin, una combinación un tanto extraña pero que funcionó bastante bien. Tiene una duración de hora y media, el tiempo justo la verdad. Por acá les dejo el tráiler.

A film to which I give a 7.5/10 because I arrived with very low expectations and it turned out to be a decent and good discovery. Nicolas Cage was very top, high level action scenes, lots of blood, too much I would say, body parts flying and exploding everywhere, a good final message, in short, a somewhat strange combination but it worked quite well.
