El día de hoy estamos de vuelta con las reseñas y esta vez lo hago con una miniserie que me había llamado mucho la atención y de la cual me habían hablado mucho. Para serles sincero tenía tiempo que no me indignaba tanto viendo una historia, hay que aclarar que ésta es basada en hechos reales, como lo hice con The Dropout. Eso sucede por dos cosas, por lo increíble de la historia al nivel de lo absurdo quizás y por la gran actuación de nuestra protagonista.
Today we are back with the reviews and this time I do it with a miniseries that had caught my attention and of which I had been told a lot. To be honest, it had been a long time since I was so indignant watching a story, it should be noted that this one is based on real events, as I did with The Dropout. That happens because of two things, because of the incredible story at the level of absurdity perhaps and because of the great performance of our protagonist.
Parece ser una "moda" últimamente que las grandes productoras estén sacando este tipo de historias llenas de fraudes, estafas, engaños con base en hechos reales ya que claramente son cosas que van a enganchar a las personas y porque creo que la sociedad merece conocer todas estas movidas que llegan a hacer las personas por cierta cantidad de dinero y fama. Pero sin más vamos entonces y hablemos un poco de esta alucinante historia...
It seems to be a "fashion" lately that the big production companies are bringing out this kind of stories full of frauds, scams, deceptions based on real facts because clearly these are things that are going to hook people and because I believe that society deserves to know all these moves that people get to do for a certain amount of money and fame. But without further ado, let's go ahead and talk a little bit about this amazing story...
Esta es la historia de Elizabeth Holmes, en este caso interpretada por Amanda Seyfried, una joven mujer que tuvo una idea revolucionaria en el campo de la medicina y tecnología pero que por diferentes motivos, incompetencia y una desconexión con la realidad absoluta básicamente, lo perdió todo de un día para otro. En su momento llegó a ser la billonaria más joven del mundo y muchos creían que sería la sucesora de Steve Jobs.
This is the story of Elizabeth Holmes, in this case played by Amanda Seyfried, a young woman who had a revolutionary idea in the field of medicine and technology but for various reasons, incompetence and basically a disconnection with absolute reality, lost everything overnight. At the time she became the youngest billionaire in the world and many believed that she would be the successor of Steve Jobs.
Ella crea Theranos justo después de abandonar los estudios, una empresa que pretendía meterse en la industria de la salud con la finalidad de ayudar a millones de personas en lo que a análisis de sangre se refería. En esta miniserie veremos como fue el auge de Holmes, como logra estafar a inversores, como de la nada arma una empresa inservible pero que para los ojos de las personas era de las mejores cosas jamás hecha y como de la noche a la mañana todo ese "sueño" se comienza a hundir por su propio peso.
She creates Theranos right after leaving school, a company that intended to get into the health industry in order to help millions of people in terms of blood tests. In this miniseries we will see how Holmes' rise was, how she manages to swindle investors, how from nothing she builds a useless company but that in the eyes of the people was one of the best things ever made and how overnight all that "dream" begins to collapse under its own weight.
Lo primero que hay que decir es que esta historia es claramente ficción solo que como les comenté está basada en hechos reales, la productora de esta miniserie Elizabeth Meriwether así lo hizo saber al decir que nunca llegó a entrevistar a la verdadera Holmes. Por lo que todas las cosas que acá vemos son producto de un trabajo periodístico e investigativo de muchos años, eso y el toque de actuación que corre por cuenta de Amanda que la verdad es que lo hace estupendamente bien.
The first thing to say is that this story is clearly fiction, but as I said it is based on real facts, the producer of this miniseries Elizabeth Meriwether made it known by saying that she never interviewed the real Holmes. So all the things we see here are the product of a journalistic and investigative work of many years, that and the touch of acting that runs on Amanda's account that the truth is that she does it wonderfully well.
Esta triste trama no las muestran de forma cronológica, es decir, primero vemos a una joven Elizabeth llena de sueños en la universidad y con unas ganas tremendas de cambiar el mundo, vemos como a pesar de que varias personas al principio no creen en ese proyecto ella no decae y continua por ese camino "reclutando" gente para que crean en ella hasta que llega el momento, después de un largo camino, consigue los contactos necesarios para comenzar lo que sería su perdición, Theranos.
This sad plot is not shown chronologically, that is, first we see a young Elizabeth full of dreams in college and with a tremendous desire to change the world, we see how despite the fact that several people at first do not believe in this project she does not decline and continues along this path "recruiting" people to believe in her until the time comes, after a long journey, she gets the necessary contacts to start what would be her undoing, Theranos.
En resumidas cuentas la idea dentro de Theranos era facilitar la vida de las personas con exámenes de sangre rápidos y precisos pero nada más alejado de la realidad. Era una tecnología que no servía y poco fiable y que a lo largo de los años engañó a miles de personas con resultados falsos relacionados con el cáncer, enfermedades crónicas, detección de embarazos, etc. Una empresa que jugó con la vida de cientos de personas solo por el afán del poder y la fama de un par de personas.
In short, the idea behind Theranos was to make people's lives easier with fast and accurate blood tests, but nothing could be further from the truth. It was a worthless and unreliable technology that over the years deceived thousands of people with false results related to cancer, chronic diseases, pregnancy detection, etc. A company that gambled with the lives of hundreds of people just for the sake of power and fame of a couple of people.
Un lugar de trabajo que al principio era acogedor, diferente y lleno de esperanza se terminó convirtiendo en una pesadilla para muchos de sus empleados. La verdad es que la miniserie te lleva por caminos donde realmente odias a todo lo que rodea a Holmes, Sunny, que ya hablaremos de él y todo lo que Theranos hacía. Es una buena historia para los emprendedores para que entiendan que es muy fácil desviarse del camino si no se tienen las convicciones claras.
A workplace that at first was welcoming, different and full of hope ended up becoming a nightmare for many of its employees. The truth is that the miniseries takes you down paths where you really hate everything around Holmes, Sunny, who we will talk about him and everything Theranos did. It's a good story for entrepreneurs to understand that it's very easy to get off track if you don't have clear convictions.
Como les dije en esta trama hay otro nefasto personaje, Sunny Balwani (Naveen Andrews) quien fue pareja de Elizabeth y jefe de operaciones de Theranos. Era la mano dura detrás de las decisiones que se tomaban y parte del descalabro de la empresa. Fue tanta la influencia de Sunny que nuestra protagonista cambió hasta su voz y forma de vestir para así cumplir los estándares que según él ella debía de seguir. Todo fue un viaje bastante lamentable porque yo creo firmemente que Holmes tenía buenas intenciones pero al tener una visión de la realidad muy disociada afectó todas las decisiones que llegó a tomar.
As I told you in this plot there is another nefarious character, Sunny Balwani (Naveen Andrews) who was Elizabeth's partner and head of operations at Theranos. She was the iron fist behind the decisions that were made and part of the company's downfall. Sunny's influence was so great that our protagonist even changed her voice and the way she dressed to meet the standards he said she had to follow. It was all a rather unfortunate journey because I firmly believe that Holmes had good intentions but having a very dissociated vision of reality affected all the decisions he came to make.
El papel que hace Amanda Seyfried es increíble. Se los digo de verdad pero llegan a detestar a esa mujer y cuando eso ocurre es porque la actriz está haciendo un muy buen trabajo de interpretación. Es difícil saber que tanto es realidad y ficción por lo que les comenté al principio pero uno pensaría que algo de verdad tiene que haber en ese personaje que vimos bajo los zapatos de Amanda. Se sabe que hubo entrevistas con ex trabajadores de Holmes por lo que si, algunas cosas que vemos seguramente está ajustadas un poco a la realidad.
The role Amanda Seyfried plays is incredible. I'm telling you for real but you come to hate that woman and when that happens it's because the actress is doing a very good job of acting. It is hard to know how much is fact and fiction because of what I told you at the beginning but you would think that there has to be some truth in that character that we saw under Amanda's shoes. It is known that there were interviews with Holmes' former employees, so yes, some of what we see is probably a little bit true.
Un personaje que tiene un antes y un después y que a través de la actuación de Amanda lo vemos claramente. Me recuerda mucho a la historia de Anna Delvey por Julia Garner. No se quien lo hizo mejor porque son cosas muy diferentes pero son dos claros ejemplos de que se pueden ver actuaciones de primera con personajes reales y no sacados de la imaginación de una persona.
A character that has a before and after and through Amanda's performance we see it clearly. It reminds me a lot of the story of Anna Delvey by Julia Garner. I don't know who did it better because they are very different things but they are two clear examples that you can see top notch performances with real characters and not taken from a person's imagination.
En fin, una miniserie impresionante que nos muestra que no todo lo que brilla es oro. Me gustó bastante porque los toques de ficción que vemos en ella le dan un toque más sensacionalista que es lo que al final mueve todo. Es una historia para que te indignes y entiendas que de buenas intenciones no se vive, que el dinero y la fama ciega por muy cliché que sea. Te vas a enganchar mucho.
In short, an impressive miniseries that shows us that not all that glitters is gold. I liked it a lot because the touches of fiction that we see in it give it a more sensationalist touch, which is what moves everything in the end. It is a story to make you indignant and understand that good intentions do not live, that money and fame blind you no matter how cliché it is. You'll get really hooked.
Le doy un 9/10 porque creo que cumple su premisa de mostrar una historia terrible, con muchas personas afectadas directa e indirectamente de una forma en la que no te cansas del contenido, sumamente entretenida y con una carga altísima de tensión porque si, hay momentos donde la trama se vuelve pesada. La pueden encontrar en Disney+ y Hulu y consta de 8 capítulos de 50 minutos aproximadamente. Les dejo el tráiler.
I give it a 9/10 because I think it fulfills its premise of showing a terrible story, with many people affected directly and indirectly in a way that you do not get tired of the content, highly entertaining and with a very high tension load because yes, there are moments where the plot becomes heavy. Te recomiendo ver el documental The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley , es del 2019 y aborda este caso. Lo recomendé en la reseña que hice de esta mini serie. Holmes es un fraude total, hasta cambio el tono de voz, una mentira ambulante, en Septiembre tienen programado que el juez dicte sentencia. Puede ir a prisión y pagar una millonada.
No había escuchado de esta serie, pero suena muy buena, tienes razón, últimamente está el auge de historias de fraudes, creo que gusta verlos para darnos cuenta de lo que pasa y es un tanto satisfactorio ver cuando todo se les viene abajo.
