Westerns are one of my favorite film genres to watch because, beyond their aesthetic and setting, I feel they can accommodate just about any plot. Whether it’s a tale of revenge, a comedy, a romance, paranormal horror, or a family drama, almost any story can be adapted to the genre seamlessly, resulting in something truly compelling. It helps even more when the film features big-name actors; in this case, Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson were chosen to tell a story where settling old scores and seeking revenge ignite the action in a remote town in the American Old West.
Los westerns son uno de los géneros del cine que más me gusta ver porque a parte de su estética y ambientación, siento que le pega cualquier trama que le pongas. Venganza, una comedia, un romance, el terror paranormal, un drama familiar; cualquier historia que quieras adaptar a el puede funcionar sin problemas y el resultado será muy interesante de ver. Si a todo esto le sumamos que la película en cuestión tenga reclutados a un par de actores de nombres pues más fácil aún será todo. Pierce Brosnan y Samuel L. Jackson fueron los hombres elegidos para contarnos esta historia en donde las cuentas pendientes y la busqueda de venganza puede ser el motor principal que prenda la chispa en el pueblo más remoto del lejano oeste de los Estados Unidos.
The story is set in the late 1800s, a time when the gallows were used to execute those found guilty of crimes. Isaac Broadway is a man facing execution; before he dies, he charges his son, Henry, with avenging him, insisting that he was framed for a crime he did not commit. Though fearful, Henry is determined to keep his promise to his father and travels to Trinity—a remote town in the mountains of Montana—to find the man who set the trap. Upon arrival, he discovers a somewhat lawless town where might—or the loudest voice—seems to rule. Yet, even this small settlement has a sheriff: Gabriel Dove (Pierce Brosnan). New to the position, Gabriel appears to be a fair and strict man—traits that have made him unpopular with many locals. Gabriel and Henry have an initial encounter that helps clarify the situation regarding the late Isaac’s final request.
Estamos a finales de los 1800 en donde la horca se usaba para matar a los culpables de crímenes. Isaac Broadway es el hombre que morirá y antes de hacerlo le encomienda a su hijo Henry que lo vengue porque él asegura que lo incriminaron por algo que no cometió. Henry, temeroso pero convencido de cumplir la promesa que le hizo a su padre, decide viajar a Trinity, un pueblo apartado en las montañas de Montana en busca del hombre que le tendió aquella trampa a su papá. Una vez llega se encuentra con un pueblo un poco sin ley en donde pareciera reinar el más fuerte o el que más grite. Incluso ese pequeño lugar tiene un sheriff, Gabriel Dove (Pierce Brosnan), un hombre que es nuevo en el cargo y que parece ser bastante justo y estricto, de ahí a que muchos no lo quieran. Gabriel y Henry logran un primer encuentro que ayuda a aclarar todo referente al pedido del ya difunto Isaac.
In this story, Henry isn't the only one searching for something; there is also St. Christopher (Samuel L. Jackson), a classic outlaw with his own unfinished business—and it seems Henry might be able to help him with it. From this point on, the story becomes steeped in secrets that should have remained in the past and in violence fueled by a quest for justice and betrayal; in the Old West, trusting others is no easy task. While Henry’s quest for revenge is part of the narrative, there is another plot thread involving him—one you’ll have to watch the film to discover. Personally, I really enjoy Westerns; they are generally films where violence is a constant presence, regardless of the underlying story. People always seemed to be on the defensive, and the slightest odd look was enough to spark a shootout in the town saloon (which happens here). That, along with conflicts involving women who refuse a particular man's advances—these are the things that almost always ignite the chain of events that follows.
En esta historia Henry no es el unico en busqueda de algo, también está St. Christopher (Samuel L. Jackson), el típico bandido/forajido que también tiene asuntos pendientes por resolver y tal parece que Henry lo puede ayudar en eso. A partir de acá veremos como esta historia se llena de secretos que tendrían que haber quedado en el pasado, una violencia sustentada en esa busqueda de justicia y traiciones, en ese lejano oeste es muy difícil confiar en las personas. Hay un tema y es que la venganza de Henry no es el camino de la trama, hay otro que lo involucra pero que tendrán que averiguar viendo el film. Personalmente disfruto mucho los western, por lo general son películas en donde la violencia se hace siempre presente, sin importar el trasfondo de la historia. La gente siempre parecía estar a la defensiva y la mínima mirada extraña era razón suficiente para armar un tiroteo en la cantina del pueblo (esto pasa acá). Esto y problemas con mujeres que no quieren estar con determinado hombre. Casi siempre esto es lo que prende la chispa de todo lo que pasa después.
The action is a bit different since it all takes place on horseback, featuring revolvers and rifles, which makes the plot very entertaining to watch. The shootouts go hand-in-hand with the unfolding story; as I mentioned, it isn't just about Henry's revenge—other events occur that eventually tie together through a common thread. The plot is actually very simple and easy to follow—so much so that you can easily imagine how it will all end. Beyond the action, there is a diverse range of dramatic elements: Henry's existential struggle; the town's issues stemming from wounds and injustices in its recent past; the sheriff's determination to do his job; and St. Christopher's refusal to let himself get screwed over again. There are no interesting plot twists, which is something the film really lacks. Even though everything is quite straightforward and lacks depth, the movie remains enjoyable; this is because the presence of multiple ongoing conflicts ensures the film never becomes boring.
La acción es algo diferente porque todo es a caballo, con revólveres y rifles lo que hace que la trama sea muy entretenida de ver. Los tiroteos van de la mano con el desarrollo de la trama, como les dije no todo será la venganza de Henry, pasan más cosas que al final terminan uniéndose ya que tienen un hilo conductor. Realmente la trama es super simple y sencilla de seguir al punto de que uno puede imaginar como terminará todo. Además de la acción hay un drama muy variopinto, está el existencial de Henry; el del pueblo que tiene que ver unas heridas e injusticias en su pasado reciente; el del sheriff porque querer hacer su trabajo y el de St. Christopher por no querer que lo vuelvan a fregar. No hay plot twist interesantes y eso siempre hace falta. A pesar de que todo es muy plano y sin mucha profundidad la película se disfruta y eso pasa porque como hay varios conflictos abiertos el film nunca se pone aburrido.
It is a privilege to see both Brosnan and Jackson in the same movie. Brosnan is, as always, understated and dignified; despite being over 70, he takes on a very active role here—riding, shooting, and fighting. He is a truly versatile actor who does an excellent job playing the sheriff. Then there is the charismatic Samuel L. Jackson. The thing about him is that, no matter how terrible his character might be, it is impossible not to like him; he possesses an on-screen magnetism that makes all his roles entertaining to watch. He always seems to inject a sense of humor that makes him endearing—even though, I repeat, this specific character is a thief, a murderer, and a con artist. Sometimes I feel like he is always playing the same person, just in different outfits and settings. Anyway, it is a very easy watch; it wasn't on my radar, but as soon as I saw the stars, I sat down to watch it. It is simple, unpretentious, and straightforward. It runs for an hour and a half—the perfect length. I’ve included the trailer here for you to check out.
Ver en una misma película a Brosnan y a Jackson es un privilegio. El primero como siempre sobrio, con su herencia irlandesa, lo vemos en un papel muy activo para sus más de 70 años. Monta a caballo, dispara, pelea; es un actor sumamente completo que en este personaje del sheriff cumple muy bien su rol. Por el otro lado tenemos al carismático Samuel L. Jackson. Con él pasa algo y es que por más terrible que sea el personaje es imposible que te caiga mal, el tipo tiene un magnetismo con la pantalla que hace que sus papeles sean todos muy divertidos de ver. Porque si, pareciera que siempre le añade ese sentido del humor que lo hace entrañable a pesar, y vuelvo a repetir, de que este personaje en concreto sea un ladrón, asesino y estafador. A veces creo que siempre interpreta a la misma persona pero con diferente atuendo y contexto. En fin, es una película muy ligera de ver, no la tenía en el radar y apenas vi sus protagonistas me senté a verla. Es sencilla, sin pretensiones y directa. Hora y media es lo que dura, tiempo ideal.
