Comedy has several subgenres, and the "stoner" movie is one of them. These are films rooted in marijuana culture and consumption—meaning the plot often revolves around that theme. To give you an idea, examples include Ted, Scary Movie, and Superbad. It’s not a genre I watch constantly—partly because such films aren't exactly commonplace—but whenever one pops up, I have to admit I get curious to see what kind of antics they’ve come up with this time. In this instance, the story blends the classic comedy of two perpetually stoned characters with science fiction—a truly bizarre mix, to say the least. I sat down with high expectations and no idea what to expect, but I actually ended up laughing at such a silly, nonsensical movie.
La comedia tiene varios subgéneros y entre ellos está el "stoner". Es el tipo de películas que se basan en la cultura de la marihuana y su consumo, es decir, la trama muchas veces gira alrededor de eso. Para que me entiendan algunos films de estos pueden ser TED, Scary Movie, Superbad, etc. No es algo que vea siempre porque tampoco es que son muy comunes de ver pero cuando aparecen por allí debo confesar que me da curiosidad con que van a salir esta vez. En este caso esta historia combina la comedia típica de par de personas que viven fumadas con la ciencia ficción, una mezcla bien extraña por decir lo menos. Me senté con mucha expectación y sin saber que esperar y la verdad es que me terminé riendo con semejante película tan tonta y sin sentido.
We meet Frankie and Molly (Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat), two friends drifting aimlessly through life. They hold down precarious, low-paying jobs and spend their days smoking marijuana. Frankie, in particular, could have achieved more—having attended Stanford—but she realized it wasn't for her and dropped out; now, she lives in blissful contentment with her best friend, despite the constant threat of eviction due to unpaid rent. Everything changes one night when Frankie attends a party and encounters a woman who looks exactly like her. Amidst the night's chaos, a case of mistaken identity occurs, leaving poor Frankie with something that could ultimately prove to be either her undoing or her ticket to a better life.
Tenemos a Frankie y Molly (Kristen Stewart y Alia Shawkat), dos amigas que no tienen ningún tipo de rumbo en sus vidas. Tienen trabajos muy precarios que apenas les da para vivir y se le pasan fumando marihuana todo el día. Una de ellas, Frankie pudo haber conseguido mejores cosas, estudió en Stanford, pero se dio cuenta que no era lo suyo y renunció y ahora vive con su mejor amiga en estado de felicidad absoluta pero sabiendo que en el cualquier momento se quedan sin casa por no poder la renta. Todo cambia una noche cuando Frankie decide ir a una fiesta en donde se consigue a una mujer idéntica a ella. Por el caos de la noche se terminan confundiendo y la pobre Frankie termina con algo que al final sería su ruina o su boleto a una mejor vida.
The next morning, they discover a briefcase in the house containing a sort of experimental drug with psychedelic colors. Being the kind of people who consume whatever is put in front of them, they decide to try it, and the results are completely unexpected. They develop—of all things—telepathy, along with flashes of telekinesis. There is a reason and an origin for all this, but I’ll leave that for you to discover by watching the movie. Of course, since the drug is so powerful and potent, others are after it too; this sparks a chaotic chase—full of mishaps and disorder—involving two women high on the drug and a group of rather useless, incompetent men. As you can tell, this is a very peculiar film; comedy is present, but not in the conventional sense. It’s the kind of humor born from nonsensical situations, incoherent interactions, bizarre and funny characters, and a plot with a backstory so inexplicable that it’s actually funny.
Resulta que a la mañana siguiente se dan cuenta de que hay un maletín en la casa que contiene una especie de droga experimental con colores todo psicodélicos. Como buenas personas que consumen todo lo que se les ponga al frente deciden probar esto y los resultados son totalmente inesperados. Desarrollan, nada más y nada menos, telepatía entre ellas con algunos destellos de telequinesis. Todo esto tiene una razón de ser y origen pero eso se los dejo para que vean la película. Pero claro, al ser una droga tan poderosa y potente hay otras personas que también están detrás de ella por lo que se arma toda una persecución llena de tropiezos, caos y desorden entre dos mujeres muy drogas y un grupo de hombres bastante inútiles e incompetentes. Como están leyendo este film es uno bien particular en donde la comedia está presente pero no como la conocemos, es esa que se da por situaciones sin sentido, interacciones incoherentes, personajes bien raros y cómicos y una trama que tiene un trasfondo tan inexplicable que da risa.
Since the film isn't heavy on action—featuring just a couple of fights and shootouts—and relies instead on the experiences of the two female leads, the plot revolves around the typical wild situations they find themselves in while trying to get the money and get rid of the drugs. For this to work, the protagonists need plenty of charisma and chemistry, and that is certainly the case here; together, they are a total disaster, and the result is plenty of laughs. The tension stems from their unpredictability; you never know what crazy ideas they’ll come up with or how they’ll resolve the tight spots they get into (and there are a few of those). Personally, I wasn't bored, and I have to say I enjoyed it much more than I expected. I think the comedy, combined with the fictional elements, makes it more entertaining; the backstory regarding the drug and its powers is absolutely wild, yet it somehow makes a strange kind of sense. It’s all very bizarre.
Al ser un film que no tiene tanta acción (par de peleas y disparos) y que solo se basa en todo lo que este par de mujeres viven y experimentan la trama termina quedando en las típicas situaciones alocadas por las que pasan para poder conseguir el dinero y librarse de esas drogas. Para que esto funcione tiene que haber mucho carisma y mucha química entre las protagonistas y eso pasa acá, juntas son un desastre total y es tan así que las risas no faltan. La tensión que hay viene dada por lo impredecible que son, no sabes con que ocurrencias van a salir o la forma con la que van a resolver los apuros en los que se terminan metiendo (que hay un par de esos). Personalmente no me aburrí y hay que decir que la disfruté mucho más de lo que esperaba. Creo que la comedia en si junto con la ficción que le metieron la hace más divertida porque si, la historia detrás de la droga y sus poderes es algo demencial aunque con algo de sentido. Todo es muy extraño.
Both Kristen and Alia put in pretty good performances. Some might say that playing someone who is high shouldn't be difficult, but I’d argue otherwise; you have to be charismatic and funny, and not everyone has that gift. You genuinely laugh along with them—it might not be the pinnacle of comedy, but it’s definitely fun to watch. Geena Davis and Kate McKinnon also make appearances; they’re comedy stars—especially McKinnon, who plays a very distinct, well-defined character with a unique personality (come to think of it, that’s a trademark of hers). Seth Rogen shows up too, though not in the way you might expect. All in all, it’s a movie that feels very typical of the 90s or early 2000s—the era when these kinds of productions were most common. It’s an absurd comedy full of chaos and nonsense, compounded by the disaster that ensues when two women get absolutely stoned. I think you’ll enjoy it. It runs just over an hour and a half. Tanto Kristen como Alia hicieron una interpretación bastante buena. Algunos dirán que hacer de una persona drogada no debe de ser complicado pero yo digo que si porque además tienes que ser carismático y dar risa y eso no todo el mundo lo tiene. De verdad te ríes con ellas, no serán el peak de la comedia pero si es algo cool de ver. Por allí salen Geena Davis y Kate McKinnon que son estrellas de la comedia, sobretodo la segunda que tiene un personaje muy claro y concreto pero con una personalidad muy particular, ahora que lo pienso esto es muy común en ella. Seth Rogen también tiene una participación pero no de la forma en que se imaginan. En fin, es una película muy típica de los años 90, principios de los 2000, ya que por allá es cuando más salían estas producciones. Es una comedia muy absurda llena de caos y situaciones sin sentido sumándole al desastre que representan dos mujeres hasta el tope de marihuana. Creo que la van a pasar bien. Dura poco más de hora y media. Les dejo el tráiler para que le echen un ojo.
