Últimamente he tomado la decisión de darme unas vacaciones de Netflix, ya que su contenido no me está llamando tanto la atención como lo solía hacer (con sus muy pequeñas excepciones claro está) y es que la compañía con sede en California, Estados Unidos pienso que antepone la cantidad por sobre calidad a la hora de sacar nuevos productos. Es por esto que he emigrado a otras plataformas, Amazon Prime, que las ultimas tres series que vi son de ellos y la verdad es que fueron muy buenas, la misma Apple Tv también tiene un par de series bastante respetables y por supuesto a la todopoderosa HBO, la mejor compañía de streaming hoy en día y es precisamente de ella esta miniserie del hoy.
Lately I have made the decision to take a vacation from Netflix, since its content is not calling my attention as much as it used to (with its very small exceptions of course) and I think that the company based in California, United States, puts quantity over quality when it comes to releasing new products. This is why I have migrated to other platforms, Amazon Prime, the last three series I saw are from them and the truth is that they were very good, the same Apple TV also has a couple of quite respectable series and of course the almighty HBO, the best streaming company today and it is precisely from them this miniseries today.
HBO se caracteriza por hacer trabajos impecables y esta miniserie no es la excepción a esa regla. Una miniserie basada en hechos reales sobre la corrupción en un cuerpo policial en donde el protagonista es Jon Bernthal, que más podemos pedir?... Lo que me encontré al ver esto fue mucha indignación, crudeza y un golpe de realidad ya que eso es lo que se vive todos los días tanto en Estados Unidos como en otros países, es un panorama muy normalizado lamentablemente. Bernthal como siempre fue la piedra angular acá con una actuación de 10 en donde lo vemos con el personaje que mejor se le da: el rudo y sin escrúpulos. Pero bueno, hablemos un poco de lo que es esta miniserie...
HBO is known for its impeccable work and this miniseries is no exception to that rule. A miniseries based on real events about corruption in a police force where the protagonist is Jon Bernthal, what more could we ask for?... What I found when I saw this was a lot of indignation, rawness and a blow of reality because that is what we live every day both in the United States and in other countries, it is a very normalized scenario unfortunately. Bernthal as always was the cornerstone here with a performance of 10 where we see him with the character that best suits him: the rude and unscrupulous. But well, let's talk a little bit about what this miniseries is...
Como les comenté esta miniserie está basada en hechos reales, unos que acontecieron en la ciudad de Baltimore tras la muerte de un joven de raza negra, Freddie Gray quien falleció en extrañas circunstancias tras estar bajo la custodia de la policía. Evidentemente esto trajo un gran descontento en la ciudad lo que llevó a que se incrementaran los robos, disturbios y asesinatos haciendo que vivir en Baltimore sea un completo infierno. La ciudad tranquila que muchos conocían ya no existía ya que el daño moral fue muy grande y la desconfianza en los uniformados fue más grande aún al punto de que estábamos en un sitio prácticamente ingobernable.
As I mentioned before, this miniseries is based on real events that took place in the city of Baltimore after the death of a young black man, Freddie Gray, who died in strange circumstances after being in police custody. Evidently this brought great discontent in the city which led to an increase in robberies, riots and murders making living in Baltimore a complete hell. The peaceful city that many knew no longer existed as the moral damage was great and the distrust in the uniformed was even greater to the point that we were in a practically ungovernable place.
Como era de esperarse las autoridades querían una respuesta inmediata ante esta situación que estaba más que fuera de sus manos y es allí cuando deciden llamar a Wayne Jenkins (Jon Bernthal) un sargento que tiene la fama de ser muy bueno en su trabajo y quien junto a otros policías arman un escuadrón para buscar sacar todas lar armas y la droga que circulan por las calles de Baltimore. Pero lo que no saben las autoridades es que el remedio fue más caro que la enfermedad y estos agentes, que se suponían tenían que dar el ejemplo se terminaron convirtiendo en la raíz de una corrupción sin precedentes en el departamento de policías de Baltimore.
As expected, the authorities wanted an immediate response to this situation that was more than out of their hands and that is when they decided to call Wayne Jenkins (Jon Bernthal) a sergeant who has the reputation of being very good at his job and who along with other police officers put together a squad to try to remove all the weapons and drugs that circulate through the streets of Baltimore. But what the authorities do not know is that the remedy was more expensive than the disease and these agents, who were supposed to set an example, ended up becoming the root of an unprecedented corruption in the Baltimore police department.
Esta es una miniserie que está increíblemente bien hecha y en parte es porque fue hecha por David Simon, la mente detrás de The Wire, una de las mejores series que he visto por cierto y de la que se podría decirse que es la hermana mayor de esta. Esta miniserie está contada desde la perspectiva de los implicados, es como un relato en primera persona ya que, y esto no es spoiler porque es un hecho real, todos estuvieron bajo una investigación federal por todo los hechos que cometieron. La historia da saltos en la línea del tiempo porque el relato siempre va acompañado de las vivencias y los crímenes que estos policías cometían de manera impune pero aún así nunca te aburres de lo que sucede, la manera en la que te adentras y te indignas con lo que pasa en las calles es de los puntos fuertes acá.
This is a miniseries that is incredibly well done and that's partly because it was made by David Simon, the mind behind The Wire, one of the best series I've ever seen by the way and arguably the older sister of this one. This miniseries is told from the perspective of those involved, it's like a first person account since, and this is not a spoiler because it's a real event, they were all under federal investigation for all the deeds they committed. The story jumps in the timeline because the story is always accompanied by the experiences and crimes that these cops committed with impunity but still you never get bored of what happens, the way in which you get into and get outraged with what happens in the streets is one of the strongest points here.
Obviamente todas estas investigaciones son reales, de hecho esta miniserie está basada en un libro de un periodista, Justin Felton, quien se encargó de documentar todo lo que pasaba en la policía de Baltimore, de ahí a que la trama y las actuaciones estén tan bien logradas y todo se vea tan real y sincero al punto que muy bien se puede hacer pasar por un documental. Y es que es tan crudo todo que a veces parece mentira que cosas como las que verán en esta miniserie puedan suceder en la vida cotidiana de las personas; una falta de empatía, humanidad, el pensar en si mismo y nadie más, en la frase "todos son culpables hasta que se demuestre lo contrario", nos hace pensar que como sociedad, independientemente de donde estemos, estamos muy lejos de ser una no perfecta pero si ejemplar.
Obviously all these investigations are real, in fact this miniseries is based on a book by a journalist, Justin Felton, who was responsible for documenting everything that happened in the Baltimore police, hence the plot and performances are so well done and everything looks so real and sincere to the point that it could very well pass for a documentary. And it is so raw that sometimes it seems unbelievable that things like what you will see in this miniseries can happen in the daily lives of people; a lack of empathy, humanity, thinking of oneself and no one else, in the phrase "everyone is guilty until proven otherwise", makes us think that as a society, regardless of where we are, we are far from being a not perfect but exemplary one.
Claro está que esta historia sale en un momento en donde no tanto la corrupción está a flor de piel sino la violencia policial y el racismo en las calles de Estados Unidos pareciera que cada vez se sienten más cómodos. Porque si, este escuadrón de Rastreo de Armas tenían carta blanca para hacer lo que quisieran amparados por un sistema que también está roto. Robaban, vendían drogas, abusaban de la autoridad, eran racistas y la presunción de inocencia para ellos no existía, eran intocables en una ciudad que más que miedo lo que sentían por la policía era asco y desconfianza. Aquí no verán grandes escenas de acción ni persecuciones, todo se centra en el accionar delictivo de estos policías, como hacían los allanamientos y sus tratos; y por el otro lado el accionar del FBI y toda la investigación y seguimiento que le hicieron a estos agentes por más de dos años.
Of course, this story comes out at a time when not so much corruption is at its peak but police violence and racism in the streets of the United States seem to feel more and more comfortable. Because yes, this gun-tracing squad had carte blanche to do whatever they wanted under the protection of a system that is also broken. They stole, sold drugs, abused authority, were racist and the presumption of innocence did not exist for them, they were untouchable in a city that more than fear what they felt for the police was disgust and distrust. Here you will not see big action scenes or chases, everything is focused on the criminal actions of these policemen, how they made the raids and their treatment; and on the other hand the actions of the FBI and all the investigation and monitoring they did to these agents for more than two years.
Pero nada de esto funciona sin una cara que sea el reflejo de todo y esa es la de Jon Bernthal. Si hay un actor que rara vez haga un mal personaje sin duda tendría que ser Jon, todas sus interpretaciones son muy buenas y otro ejemplo es esta miniserie. Wayne es un personaje bastante detestable y con una doble moral del tamaño de una montaña al punto que llegas a odiarlo, realmente es alguien que te cae mal. Y si a todo eso le suman la forma de actuar de Jon ya sabrán la clase de personaje que saldrá, es el centro de la historia y con toda la razón. Un muy buen papel de Bernthal al que personalmente no entiendo como no está nominado a los Emmy en la categoría de Mejor Actor en una miniserie.
But none of this works without a face that is the reflection of it all and that is Jon Bernthal. If there is an actor who rarely plays a bad character it would definitely have to be Jon, all of his performances are very good and another example is this miniseries. Wayne is a pretty obnoxious character with a double standard the size of a mountain to the point that you come to hate him, he really is someone you dislike. And if you add to all that Jon's way of acting you know the kind of character that will come out, he is the center of the story and rightfully so. A very good role from Bernthal who I personally don't understand how he is not nominated for an Emmy in the category of Best Actor in a miniseries.
Pero hay personajes secundarios que también merecen ser nombrados y que nos dicen que no todo está completamente perdido. Jamie Hector hace de Sean Suiter un detective de homicidios quien trabajó por un tiempo con Wayne. Él nunca estuvo de acuerdo con las prácticas de Jenkins, si alguna vez las hizo entendemos que fue por la presión que conllevaba trabajar al lado de un policía como este sargento. El final de este detective creo que no fue digno de alabar pero también creo que en el fondo era cero corrupto. El papel de Jamie Hector es muy bueno porque refleja el "sufrimiento" de estar en el sitio equivocado con las personas equivocadas. La verdad es que todo el elenco, en gran parte el mismo que The Wire, es muy top, son actores que saben interpretar bien lo que es ser policía y es por eso que esta miniserie es tan buena y tan realista.
But there are supporting characters who also deserve to be named and tell us that all is not completely lost. Jamie Hector plays Sean Suiter a homicide detective who worked for a while with Wayne. He never agreed with Jenkins' practices, if he ever did we understand it was because of the pressure that came with working alongside a cop like this sergeant. The ending of this detective I think was not praiseworthy but I also believe that deep down he was zero corrupt. Jamie Hector's role is very good because it reflects the "suffering" of being in the wrong place with the wrong people. The truth is that the whole cast, largely the same as The Wire, is very top, they are actors who know how to interpret well what it is to be a cop and that is why this miniseries is so good and so realistic.
Al final estamos ante un contenido digno de HBO, una miniserie con buenos actores que toca una problemática bastante actual y cruda, temas como el racismo y la brutalidad policial siempre serán tendencia y si el contenido es bueno como en este caso pues más todavía. Es una trama de acción e intriga que va de la mano con un drama social importante. Lo dije con Jon, no entiendo como esta serie no está nominada a mejor Miniserie en los Emmy, cosas de la academia que no se entienden.
In the end we are facing a content worthy of HBO, a miniseries with good actors that touches a fairly current and raw problem, issues such as racism and police brutality will always be trendy and if the content is good as in this case then even more so. It is a plot of action and intrigue that goes hand in hand with an important social drama. I said it with Jon, I do not understand how this series is not nominated for best Miniseries at the Emmy's, things of the academy that are not understood.
Le doy un 8.5/10, son seis capítulos muy bien hechos en donde nos queda muy claro como fue toda esa investigación, los pasos de estos policías para llagar a terminar de la manera en como lo hicieron y están en la actualidad y que a pesar de ser un relato en parte real y ficticio nos muestra el reflejo de muchas sociedades hoy en día. La verdad la recomiendo ampliamente, vale mucho la pena de ver. La pueden encontrar en HBO Max y cada episodio dura entre 55 minutos a una hora aproximadamente. Por acá les dejo el tráiler.
I give it an 8.5/10, there are six very well done chapters where it is very clear how the whole investigation went, the steps of these policemen to get to end up the way they did and are today and that despite being a story partly real and fictional shows us the reflection of many societies today. I highly recommend it, it is worth watching. You can find it on HBO Max and each episode lasts between 55 minutes to an hour approximately. Here is the trailer.

Excelente mini serie. Soy fan de Simon y el estar detrás de esta producción ya me tenia ganado. The Wire es para mi la obra maestra de la televisión americana.
Esta mini serie es fantástica y elenco lo hace fenomenal. Me agrado ver algunas caras que han participado en las anteriores series de Simon.
