These days looking through the Netflix releases I came across a movie that I had not really heard of it but when I read the synopsis and saw the great cast it definitely caught my attention. We will be talking about them but according to me they are heavy names within the acting so it should automatically be a good movie, which it is, it must be said.
The last appearance of Sandra Bullock that I saw was in Bird Box, so we already know a little of the style or genre in which she best performs and that with The Unforgivable is confirmed. This film is a DRAMA, with capital letters, where what we end up doing is reflecting on not so good things that happen in society and on the many stigmas that exist today and govern a community. Without further ado, let's talk a little about this story.
What is this movie about, then? - As I said before, it is a very powerful and moving drama about some of the paradigms that govern our lives. It is the story of Ruth Slater, a woman who spent twenty years in prison and is released for good behavior. What happens here is that any person by the fact of being an ex-convict carries an indelible mark that is very difficult or impossible I would say for people to overlook.
The plot focuses on Ruth trying as best she can to rebuild her life while two things happen in parallel: one: the tireless search for her younger sister, who has been imprisoned for the same number of years without seeing or hearing from her, and two: some ghosts from her past have no intention of turning the page and will also seek to reach our protagonist by any means possible.
As I put in the title of the publication in this film there are several premises, would you be able to do anything for your family, would you be able to forgive "mistakes" of the past, how willing you would be as part of a society to accept those who did wrong but met justice ..... These are questions that you get to ask yourself once the movie is over. So yes, it is very reflective, introspective, emotional and with a bit of tension that keeps you on the edge of the plot.
Personally I was quite surprised and liked it because it is a story that has a lot of strength and that is undoubtedly thanks to Sandra Bullock. She is known for playing dramatic roles but I had not seen her as good as I saw her in this film for a while, to the point that in several passages of the plot she really intimidates. It was a magnificent staging where we see her in different states of mind and in all of them she excels, in my opinion I saw no fissures in her performance.
Sandra is accompanied by Jon Bernthal, Viola Davis, Vincent D'Onofrio, among others. As I said, they are big names that you see before watching the movie and you expect something worthwhile. Liz Ingram (Viola Davis) is the wife of Blake (Vincent D'Onofrio) and although she has few appearances the ones she makes are spectacular, with the quality and solvency that represents her so much. Of the supporting actors, she is the one who undoubtedly got all my attention.
Going back a bit, Ruth's character is one that has a cold and impenetrable armor but inside she is totally broken and devastated and I understand that prison and life decisions are what ultimately end up forging that character. I said that she was quite intimidating and I remembered that there is a main shot where that is fully appreciated; when you see the look, the facial features and the feeling behind it you understand in an instant Ruth's background.

In short, this is a story that touches on many things that are wrong in our society, we see how there will always be a lack of empathy but we also see that it is possible within all adversity how important it is to have the ability to forgive. The ending of this story is very emotional, I was really satisfied because it is in line with everything I have talked about here today.
Plot twists, revenge, emotions such as anger, nostalgia and compassion are pillars in The Unforgivable. I rate it an 8/10 because in my opinion it lived up to the expectations of being a very good drama along with an excellent performance by Sandra Bullock.
