Hi, anime fans. Today I want to share another anime that’s perfect for this “Month of Horror,” during which I plan to bring you some real gems from the genre. Well, this movie is supposed to be a horror film—that’s why I added it to the list—but after watching it all the way through just recently, I’m not sure if I should consider it a horror movie per se. Although I’ll admit it left me a little traumatized, to be honest. Based on the 1970s manga Devilman, written and illustrated by Gō Nagai, Devilman Crybaby is an animated adaptation produced by Science Saru. Discover the darkest version of Devilman.

Plot

The anime begins with a series of visions of space, Earth, and luminous entities falling from the sky, as well as a planet teeming with monsters that is later completely destroyed. All of this takes place while we hear a voice in the background uttering certain phrases that will only make sense later on. Then we see two children who are just getting to know each other; the one with black hair extends his hand to the other, who has yellow hair. The two become close, but the blond boy doesn’t share the same compassionate and kind personality as his friend. They both grow up and, in the big city, they meet again.

Trama

I don’t know if this anime is one I’ll love or hate—it’s very confusing because of all the content it contains. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill horror story; rather, it’s a work that transcends the supernatural, dark fantasy, action, drama, and horror to ultimately become something much more philosophical, social, and anti-war. I won’t deny that it really caught my attention—not just because of how popular it is, but because of everything people say about it and how traumatic it can be. Now that I’ve watched it, I’m not sure if I feel traumatized in any way, but I won’t deny that it fascinated me a lot.

Devilman Crybaby starts off a bit rushed, without taking much time to properly introduce its characters. The anime really grabs my attention right at the end of its first episode, when it becomes very clear what the story is going to be about. It’s about two young people who’ve known each other since they were very young but who go their separate ways. One of them is Akira Fudo, the main protagonist—a high school student who can’t help but cry whenever he encounters someone going through a difficult time. On the other hand, there’s Ryo Asuka, a genius and millionaire who is cold and selfish.

One day, the two meet again and head to a seedy spot where young men and women spend the whole night dancing, drinking, doing drugs, and having sex. Akira and Ryo are searching for the “demons”—a kind of violent, grotesque creature born from the strongest desires and emotions that exist. However, amid the chaos and danger, our protagonist, Akira, suddenly becomes a powerful demon himself and manages to destroy them all. This is how Devilman is born—a demon with a “human heart” who fights against demons.

While the anime stays true to this premise, the reality turns out to be darker and more violent than you could ever imagine. We’re not just talking about an action story between humans and demons, as many might imagine, but also a narrative with quite deep character development. The horror doesn’t stem from the demons or their appearances, nor does the anime contain scary scenes or anything of the sort. The terror here is more visceral, graphic—it delves into the lowest and darkest things that human beings themselves are capable of, but let’s talk about that later.

First of all, I want to make one thing very clear—something I should have told you from the start—and that is the type of content you’ll see in this anime. NO, it’s not a dark fantasy Shōnen action anime like Jujutsu Kaisen or anything like that. YES, it has action scenes, a protagonist with supernatural powers, and all that. But it’s actually not as much about action and comedy as it seems. From the very first episode, Devilman Crybaby features plenty of nudity, gore, quite graphic deaths, sex, violence, abuse of all kinds, and so on. Aside from the battles and transformations, there’s also visceral and graphic horror.

So, if you’re thinking of watching this anime, think it through carefully first and brace yourself for the worst. I’m not saying this because it’s bad, but because of how violent, graphic, and disturbing it can be in many ways. As I mentioned above, the anime tells the story of two young people trying to fight demons in a chaotic and violent world where horror doesn’t stem from a monster straight out of hell, but from a human being consumed by their basest instincts. Devilman Crybaby explores evil incarnate within humanity itself and everything it’s capable of doing through mere manipulation, chaos, and hysteria.

What’s interesting about this work isn’t just its content, but the creator’s purpose and motivation. We’re talking about the same man who created Mazinger Z, a classic that made history in the world of anime. But Devilman Crybaby is different—it’s much darker, more mature, and more violent. It’s as if all the hatred the creator felt toward war, violence, injustice, and everything that’s wrong with this world were condensed into a short dark fantasy story with an ending that’s more than just tragic—it’s unforgettable. The anime doesn’t just entertain; it seeks to make you reflect on humanity itself.

What sets us apart from demons? What are human beings capable of doing to satisfy their most basic desires? Those of us who’ve been around for years—both online and in real life—know that in the real world there are cases a thousand times darker and more disturbing than anything we see in this anime. Yet here we are, alive, unharmed, and without consequences. In contrast, in the anime, every action taken by both our protagonists and humanity itself leads to a truly heart-wrenching outcome. The anime also delves deeply into divine themes, but its intention isn’t to glorify God—rather, it’s to give us reasons to hate the Devil.

But anyway, getting back to the anime in general, there isn’t a single episode that hasn’t made me feel more than one emotion from start to finish. The pacing, the scenes, the sequences, the plot twists, and the characters are all just insane. It’s hard to watch this anime and not end up with something stuck in your mind forever. It’s like that typical horror movie that really freaked you out as a kid and that you still remember as an adult. I feel like the same thing might happen to me with this anime, which has left me with a rather unsettling and existentialist ending. I don’t know if I liked that ending or not, to be honest.

I just know that, despite its excellent narrative and well-executed character development, the anime falls short for me visually. This is just my personal opinion, though, since I understand what the studio in charge was trying to do with this anime—experimenting by sacrificing details and other elements to achieve a smoother flow. I admit that, visually speaking, the anime didn’t turn out to be what I personally expected it to be, and maybe that’s why I feel a little disappointed by it. However, that doesn’t mean it lacks quality—quite the opposite, actually. Maybe it’s just a personal preference after all.

The characters we get to know in this anime each manage to stand out quite well in one way or another. The protagonists, for example, really catch your attention because of how different they are from each other and the contrast between them. The relationship that Akira and Ryo develop throughout the anime transcends into something more spiritual or symbolic—I’m not sure. The series constantly draws our attention to the parallels and differences between them—such as their appearances, clothing, personalities, ways of thinking, and decisions. It’s as if they were yin and yang, or something like that.

While Akira cares more about others despite being a demon, Ryo is more selfish, manipulative, and violent by nature, even though he claims to be carrying out a “divine” mission for humanity. At first, it seems as though their roles are reversed—with the “good guys” actually being the “bad guys” and the “bad guys” being the “good guys.” But honestly, nothing could be further from the truth. Some secondary characters may come to represent certain emotions or thoughts, such as envy, hatred, love, violence, sex, etc. Yes, this anime sometimes overdoes it with sex and shows some pretty explicit scenes.

Another important aspect of this anime is society itself and how it can be so easily manipulated by mere assumptions, false statements, and other forms of media manipulation. But not only that—we even get to see the extreme to which society itself can descend when it’s easily swept up in collective hysteria, with people taking each other’s lives and fomenting chaos and violence without any scruples or restraint whatsoever. There’s a point in the anime where it shifts from being just two young people fighting demons to becoming something much bigger, darker, more violent, and more chaotic.

As for the ending, I’m still not sure whether I liked it or not, since it’s far from a happy ending. It’s a heart-wrenching, disheartening, and hopeless conclusion, among other things. It’s not the kind of ending you’d expect from an anime that starts out as the story of a boy who turns into a demon and fights against evil. The plot twist in the penultimate episode is what turns everything into a complete hell. I’ll say it again: this isn’t just any ordinary anime; it’s an anime that makes you think about the worst things hidden within society, within humanity itself, and what people are capable of doing.

From a reflective standpoint, this anime might really stand out because of its ending, but personally, I think it glorifies chaos, violence, and other such things too much. Of course, we see that in the end everything turns to nothing, and maybe that’s why it feels so heart-wrenching—because we’re aware of it. On the other hand, returning to its audiovisual aspects, Devilman Crybaby features an animation style that reminds us of the past—the typical classic animation with less-detailed drawing and movement styles, but with great fluidity. Here we see it return to its roots, without much CGI, not even to provide well-designed backgrounds or environments.

Most shots and settings lack a background; only the lighting manages to create very specific effects and results, and the shadows or night scenes largely obscure the few details in the animation itself. The character designs aren’t the best and lack a lot of detail, too. But the studio in charge didn’t skimp on giving us visually striking scenes, fairly exaggerated expressions at key moments, and a fluidity that makes the sacrifice and creativity they put into this worthwhile. Remember that we’re talking about an adaptation of a work from the ’70s, so don’t expect too much.

The visual effects are excellent when the show really puts its mind to it, as is the case with the various battles. The motion effects, hits, speed, and other details blend very well with the anime’s fluidity. We also see graphic scenes of deaths and other elements whose impact or impact is diminished by the animation itself, which lacks a lot of detail. The color palette can be very muted at times, as if the contrast were lowered to negative levels. The sound effects are good and work very effectively when needed, but they’re nothing compared to the soundtrack.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the action, fantasy, drama, and horror genres.
