Plot
This second season begins by introducing us to Frieren, a millennia-old elven mage who travels the world with her small team—her young apprentice Fern and the young warrior Stark. The three of them continue their long journey toward Ende, but along the way they realize they’ve run out of money and decide to head to the nearest village to earn some by working. However, on the way, they stumble upon a hole that leads them to an old cave filled with crystals that nullify magic, rendering our millennia-old elf and her apprentice completely useless.

Rejoice, for we are in the presence of the mecca—no, the epitome—of modern fantasy. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is one of the best (if not the best) fantasy anime I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Ever since it aired in late 2023 and I joined Hive in March 2024, I’ve deeply regretted not having written a proper review—one that this magnificent anime truly deserves—all this time. Back then, there were several surprises among the new releases, but of them all, the one that stood out and established itself as the best for many was Frieren, without a doubt.
Its unique blend of classic medieval fantasy with a story that completely breaks away from the overused mold of repetitive plots in the anime industry—such as the “hero’s journey”—is what makes it a masterpiece. Unlike other fantasy animes that all follow the same story, in Frieren we get to experience the story that takes place AFTER the hero’s journey has ended. It’s told through the eyes of a unique character who is usually a supporting character in other stories but who takes on a very special leading role here.
Alégrense porque estamos ante la meca, no, la epítome de la fantasía moderna. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End s uno de los mejores (sino el mejor) animes de fantasía que he visto en toda mi vida. Desde su emisión a finales del año 2023 y mis inicios en Hive en Marzo de 2024 me he arrepentido enormemente durante todo este tiempo por no haberle hecho una reseña como se debe y se merece a este grandioso anime. En aquel entonces hubieron varias sorpresas en emisión, pero de entre todas, la que llegó a resaltar y posicionarse como la mejor para muchos fue Frieren, sin lugar a dudas.
Su mezcla preciada de fantasía medieval típica con una historia que rompe por completo con el molde ya sobreexplotado de tramas repetitivas en esta industria del anime como lo es el “camino del héroe” es lo que la convierte en una obra grandiosa. A diferencia de tener la misma historia que tienen todos los demás animes de fantasía, en Frieren conocemos la historia que hay DESPUÉS del final de dicho viaje del héroe. Vivida por un personaje único que normalmente llega a ser el secundario en las demás historias, pero que aquí toma un papel protagónico bastante especial.

Despite what some people say about this anime, Frieren is much deeper and more serious than it appears to be.

Because, yes, for those lucky few with excellent taste who got to watch the first season of Frieren back when it aired, it may have seemed a bit slow, laid-back, and even comical at first. And despite what people say about how “slow” or “boring” this anime is, I honestly don’t know what their tastes are, since Frieren’s pacing is perfect for any fan of adventure and fantasy. It’s true that it has its quiet moments, but they’re still captivating thanks to its infectious pacing and blend of humor and drama.

Y a pesar de lo que dice la gente de lo “lenta” o “aburrida” que es este anime, en realidad no sé qué gustos tendrán ya que el ritmo que tiene Frieren es perfecto para todo aquel fan de las aventuras y la fantasía. Si es cierto que tiene sus momentos tranquilos, pero no dejan de ser fascinantes debido al ritmo y la mezcla de humor y drama tan contagiosos que tiene.

Another thing that makes Frieren so special is just how engaging and captivating each episode is—whether it’s their travels, their quiet moments, their scenes of action and drama, or even those episodes filled with random moments where we see Frieren’s small team going through seemingly ordinary experiences during their stops along the way. Each and every episode in both the first and second seasons of this anime is among the best you can find right now in an industry plagued by generic content and trash.
But of course, when there’s action in an episode or two of this anime, it’s an absolute audiovisual marvel. If we focus primarily on this, then I’d say that the first season of Frieren is the best—so far—since it’s no coincidence that said season is currently at the top of MAL’s (My Anime List) list of the best anime. And the thing is, aside from having more than twice as many episodes, the first season features an entire arc at the end that’s packed with action, battles, showdowns, and displays of power so astonishing that it’s in a league of its own.
Y es que otra cosa que también tiene Frieren es lo atractivo y contagioso que es ver cada uno de sus episodios, ya sean de sus viajes, sus momentos tranquilos, sus momentos de acción y drama o incluso esos episodios donde solo ocurren momentos random donde vemos al pequeño equipo de Frieren vivir experiencias aparentemente comunes durante sus estadías a lo largo de su viaje. De todos y cada uno de estos episodios que tiene tanto la primera como su segunda temporada de este anime son de lo mejor que se puede ver actualmente en esta industria plagada de contenido genérico y basura.
Pero eso sí, cuando hay acción en un episodio o dos en este anime, es una completa maravilla audiovisual. Si nos fijamos principalmente en esto entonces diría que la primera temporada de Frieren es la mejor -hasta el momento- ya que no es por nada que dicha temporada esté actualmente en la cima de la lista de los mejores animes de MAL (My Anime List). Y es que, aparte de tener más del doble de episodios, la primera temporada tiene todo un arco al final que está repleto de acción, batallas, enfrentamientos y demostración de poder tan sorprendentes que no tiene ninguna comparación.

On the other hand, the second season is indeed shorter and has fewer action-packed moments, but that doesn’t make it any less entertaining or fascinating, to be honest. It’s true, though, that because of the small number of episodes, it left me particularly wanting more—especially with that captivating ending that introduces us to the “Golden City Arc” or whatever it’s called. Although, well, I understand that they only released 10 episodes in this second season instead of 28 like in the first one due to production issues. Let’s not forget that it took three years for Frieren to return.
As for the third and upcoming new season that’s already been confirmed, we’ll only have to wait a year to see it (supposedly next year). Other than that, I don’t think I have any complaints about this second season, since I believe it had almost the same impact and left the same impression as the previous season. Although, of course, the first season was something unprecedented that had a huge impact on the audience and quickly became a major benchmark in the industry and in today’s popular culture.
Por otro lado, la segunda temporada sí que es más corta y tiene menos momentos de acción, pero eso no la hace menos entretenida y fascinante, la verdad. Pero sí es cierto que debido a la corta cantidad de episodios que tiene me dejó particularmente con muchas ganas de más y aún con ese fascinante final que tiene y que nos introduce al “arco de la ciudad dorada” o algo así se llama. Aunque, bueno, entiendo que solo hayan sacado 10 episodios en esta segunda temporada y no 28 episodios como con la primera debido a temas de producción. Recordemos que pasaron 3 años para ver el regreso de Frieren.
Mientras que para la tercera y futura nueva temporada que han confirmado ya vamos a esperar tan solo un año para verla (el año que viene, supuestamente). Aparte de esto, creo que no tengo ninguna queja con esta segunda temporada, ya que creo que tuvo casi el mismo impacto e impresión que consiguió su temporada anterior. Aunque, claro, la primera temporada fue algo sin precedentes que impactó enormemente al público y que se convirtió rápidamente en un gran referente de la industria y la cultura popular actual.

The characters are another of the many positive aspects worth noting, especially the main characters. Frieren, of course, stands out above all others—not only because she’s the protagonist, but also because she’s an elf over a thousand years old who acts like a teenager who loves to travel in search of new spells or enchantments to learn and add to her vast repertoire. Despite how mature and responsible she is at times, she also has her flaws that reveal a certain mental immaturity. Even so, Frieren manages to rise to the occasion in important moments.
Fern, for her part, undergoes a fascinating development in the first season from her very first appearance, but otherwise we see her as the young girl responsible for the menial tasks that Frieren ignores—tasks that even turn her into a sort of caretaker. Even so, her cunning and ingenuity when casting her magic at various points in this anime make her a fascinating character to watch. On the other hand, Stark doesn’t stand out for being intelligent, irresponsible, or immature. He’s more like the typical young male character who doesn’t stand out much—except in battles, of course.

The animation and production work they did on this series is worthy of admiration and fascination—and even deserves to be studied by experts. The character designs, the art style, the visual effects, the color palette—all of this and more is so well done in this anime that it’s dazzling.

Dicho trabajo de animación y producción que hicieron con esta serie es digna de admiración, fascinación y hasta merece ser estudiado por expertos, incluso. El diseño de los personajes, el estilo de dibujo, los efectos visuales, la paleta de colores, todo esto y más está tan bien hecho en este anime que es deslumbrante.

There isn't a single bad episode—not at all—and I say this with absolute certainty. Every episode features a level of detail, animation, camera work, environments, designs, and a color palette that really stands out to the audience. Clearly, the animation reaches its peak in terms of quality, fluidity, and detail during the battles and action scenes, where the studio truly outshines all other studios with its production and animation standards. The sound effects are also excellent, but they pale in comparison to this anime’s captivating soundtrack. In short, as I said at the beginning, you must watch this anime.
Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating in the fantasy, adventure, and drama genres.
No hay un episodio malo, en lo absoluto, y esto lo digo con total certeza. Cada episodio posee una calidad de detalles, animación, planos, entornos, diseños y una mezcla de colores que resalta bastante a la vista del público. Evidentemente, la animación consigue su punto máximo de calidad, fluidez y detalles es en las batallas o las escenas de acción donde vemos al estudio hacerle una cátedra a todos los demás estudios existentes con su nivel de producción y animación.
