Hello, cinema fans. Today we’re back with a review of another comedy film that also played a part in my preteen years, in one way or another. It’s a black comedy from a time very different from today, with a plot that makes no logical sense. Little Nicky was co-written and directed by Steven Brill and stars Adam Sandler, Patricia Arquette, Harvey Keitel, and others. Get ready for one of the worst movies Sandler has ever starred in.

Una película de humor negro originario de una época muy diferente a la actual y con una historia que no tiene ningún sentido de lógica. Plot
The film opens with a man perched in a tree, listening to music while intently watching the window of the house across the street. That window belongs to the bedroom of a woman who lives alone with her young son and who, after coming home from work, begins to undress. However, due to her son’s insistence and the noise the man is making right outside the house, the woman realizes she is being spied on and starts screaming. Startled, the man falls from the tree and dies from the fall; we then see him arrive in hell, where he suffers at the hands of a giant raven.

La película inicia mostrándonos a un hombre montado sobre un árbol escuchando música mientras observa atentamente en la ventana de la casa que está enfrente de él. Dicha ventana es la de la habitación de una mujer que vive sola con su hijo pequeño y que, luego de llegar de su trabajo, empieza a desvestirse. Sin embargo, debido a la insistencia de su hijo y el ruido que hace el hombre justo afuera de la casa, la mujer se da cuenta de que la están espiando y empieza a gritar. Debido al susto, el hombre se cae del árbol y muere de la caída ya que lo vemos llegar al infierno donde sufre siendo acosado por un cuervo gigante.

As most of you probably already know, every actor’s filmography includes both successful movies and the occasional flop—some of which people wish had never even been made. The same is true for Adam Sandler. After starring in three hit films—The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, and Big Daddy—each of which grossed over $100 million at the box office (and the last one even more than $200 million) by the late ’90s, the year 2000 brought a film called Little Nicky.
This film—curiously one of the first produced and released by Happy Madison Productions, the production company founded by Adam Sandler himself—quickly became the laughingstock of film critics, and its box office failure was all too evident. While most of Sandler’s comedy films have never been critics’ favorites throughout his career, in this case it’s worth agreeing with them because of just how terrible Little Nicky is. However, no matter how much I think about it, I’m not sure if it’s intentionally bad or not.
Como seguramente ya la gran mayoría sabrá, toda filmografía de un actor posee tanto películas exitosas como también uno que otro fracaso que incluso algunos desean que nunca hubiera existido. En el caso de Adam Sandler ocurre igual ya que, luego de haber protagonizado tres exitosas películas como lo fueron The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy y Big Daddy que lograron obtener más de cien millones de dólares en taquilla cada uno (e incluso más de doscientos millones para la última) para finales de los 90; llegó el año 2000 con esta película llamada Little Nicky.
Esta película, siendo curiosamente una de las primeras películas que ha producido y lanzado la casa productora que fundó el mismo Adam Sandler llamada Happy Madison Productions; se convirtió rápidamente en el hazmerreír de la crítica especializada del cine y el fracaso que tuvo en taquilla fue más que evidente. Si bien la mayoría de películas de comedia de Sandler nunca han tenido el favoritismo de los críticos en toda su carrera, en este caso vale estar de acuerdo con ellos debido a lo pésima que es Little Nicky. I mean, starting with the plot—it’s about one of the Devil’s three sons trying to make his way to the surface from the hell where he was born and raised, in order to find his two older, rebellious brothers before his father disappears completely. Yes, as you just read, that’s what the movie is about, in a nutshell. You might find the premise interesting—all fantasy but with that dark tone since it’s about the Devil’s son and all that. But I’m telling you right now: IT’S NOT WORTH WATCHING, unless you grew up with it and have a strange fondness for that movie.
I was one of those people who grew up watching Little Nicky on cable TV from a young age, and I’ll tell you in all honesty that I NEVER liked it at all. While most of Adam Sandler’s comedy movies don’t always make sense, at least some of them have the occasional valuable message or an interesting story to tell. But in the case of Little Nicky, it’s like watching a satire aimed at certain religious beliefs that are very common in countries like the United States. So the movie uses these elements to create a very ’80s-style version of hell.
O sea, empezando por la trama que tiene, la cual trata de uno de los tres hijos del Diablo intentando ir a la superficie desde el infierno donde nació y fue criado para ir a buscar a sus dos hermanos mayores y rebeldes antes de que su padre desaparezca por completo. Si, como acaban de leer, de esto es lo que trata la película, en resumen. Posiblemente te parezca interesante la premisa toda fantástica pero con ese tono oscuro al tratarse del hijo del Diablo y todo eso. Pero ya te digo yo que NO VALE LA PENA VERLA, a menos que hayas crecido con ella y le tengas un extraño cariño a dicha película.
Yo fui uno de esos que creció viendo Little Nicky desde pequeño en la televisión por cable y ya les digo con total sinceridad que NUNCA me llegó a gustar en lo absoluto. Si bien la mayoría de películas de comedia de Adam Sandler no siempre tienen sentido, algunas al menos poseen uno que otro mensaje valioso o una historia interesante por conocer. Pero en el caso de Little Nicky es como ver una sátira dirigida a ciertas creencias religiosas muy comunes en países como Estados Unidos. Entonces dicha película utiliza estos elementos para crear una versión muy ochentera del infierno.

By this I mean what Dante did with his seven circles of hell, but this time it’s as if it came straight out of Adam Sandler’s imagination, with multiple references to the pop culture of that era, famous characters making deals with the Devil, bullies being tortured by giant, gluttonous birds, and Hitler receiving a gift from Satan “where the sun doesn’t shine” while dressed as a maid as punishment. Yeah, it’s totally crazy, but this is the hell we see in this movie, and it’s what stands out the most about it. Not to mention the countless references to Rock and Metal music.
Of everything I’ve mentioned, the only thing I liked was—obviously—the movie’s soundtrack. Other than that, NOTHING appealed to me at all—not even the main character played by Adam Sandler with his misshapen face and emo hairstyle, nor any of the other characters in the film. Not even the talking dog caught my attention, though I do admit that a good number of the jokes and funny moments in the movie did make me laugh. However, it’s not enough to just make me laugh with humor as dark as what we see here.
Con esto me refiero a lo que Dante hizo con sus siete niveles del infierno, pero en esta ocasión es como si saliera de la imaginación de Adam Sandler con múltiples referencias a la cultura popular de aquella época, personajes famoso haciendo tratos con el Diablo, acosadores siendo torturados por pájaros gigantes y golosos y a Hitler recibiendo un regalo de Satanás por “donde no llega el sol” mientras está vestido de sirvienta como castigo. Si, es toda una locura, pero este es el infierno que vemos aquí en esta película y es lo que más resalta de la misma. Eso sin mencionar la cantidad de referencias a la música Rock/Metal.
De todo esto que les comenté, lo único que me gustó es -obviamente- la banda sonora que posee esta película. De resto NADA me llegó a agradar menos, ni el protagonista interpretado por Adam Sandler con su cara deforme y peinado de Emo ni ningún otro personaje que aparece en esta película. Ni siquiera el perro que aparece hablando me llamó la atención, aunque sí admito que una buena parte de los chistes y momentos humorísticos que tiene la película sí me dieron risa. Sin embargo, no es suficiente con hacerme reír con un humor tan negro como el que vemos aquí.

The plot itself doesn’t make any sense either—like the fact that the “King of Darkness” himself turns into a puppet made of pieces that fall apart just because not all of his children are present in hell. Or the fact that he’s given a WHOLE WEEK to go find them. Anyway, there are so many things in this movie that if we try to make any sense of it, we’ll end up even more out of our minds than the person who wrote the script—honestly. By the way, it cracks me up that the script was written by THREE PEOPLE—oh well.
The movie has its nods to pop culture, as I mentioned above, but there are also some jokes related to songs with “subliminal messages” and things like that. There are also cameos by famous figures, such as the great Ozzy Osbourne at the end of the movie. In this and other ways, Little Nicky managed to have a bit of an impact on the popular culture of the time by paying homage to these iconic figures of Heavy Metal. And well, as expected, this movie shows us how the real world can be just as dark and chaotic as hell itself.
La trama de por sí tampoco tiene sentido, como el hecho de que el mismo “Rey de las Tinieblas” se vuelva un muñeco de piezas que se van soltando por solamente no contar con la presencia de todos sus hijos en el infierno. O el hecho de que le den un plazo de UNA SEMANA ENTERA para ir a buscarlos. En fin, son tantas cosas que vemos en esta película que si le buscamos alguna lógica, terminamos más mal de la cabeza que el que escribió el guión de esta película, la verdad. Por cierto, me da risa el hecho de que dicho guión lo hayan escrito TRES PERSONAS, en fin.
La película tiene sus guiños a la cultura popular, tal y como ya lo mencioné arriba, pero también tenemos ciertos chistes relacionados con canciones con “mensajes subliminales” y cosas por el estilo. También tenemos ciertas apariciones de personajes famosos, como lo es el gran Ozzy Osbourne al final de la película. De esta y otras maneras, Little Nicky logró influir un poco en la cultura popular de aquel entonces al hacer ciertos homenajes a dichas figuras icónicas del Heavy Metal. Y bueno, como era de esperarse, dicha película nos muestra cómo el mundo real puede llegar a ser tan oscuro y caótico como lo es el propio infierno.

Last but not least, let’s now talk about the audiovisual aspects of this film. One thing that really stands out—and is understandable given the era in which it was produced and released—is its visual effects. Above all, there’s that crude and poor CGI evident in various scenes throughout the film. For example, you can spot that CGI in some of the shots of Hell, just as you can when Nicky and his brothers use their “demonic powers.” Obviously, these period-specific visual details have a touch of humor to them.
Otherwise, the film’s practical visual effects aren’t bad at all by comparison. Also, the fact that they made a dog talk is an achievement I admire a bit. Another aspect I can’t overlook is the cinematography, especially the use of color palettes and tones for each scene that match the setting and context. The makeup and the designs of some of the costumes worn by certain characters also stand out on their own. The sound effects aren’t bad either, but as I mentioned earlier, I prefer the film’s soundtrack. A movie I do NOT recommend at all.
Personally, I give it a well-deserved rating of 4/10 as far as the dark comedy and fantasy genre is concerned.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película. Algo que resalta bastante y que es comprensible debido a la época en la que fue producida y estrenada fueron sus efectos visuales. Sobre todo ese CGI tan crudo y pobre que se evidencia en diferentes escenas de esta película. Por ejemplo, parte de lo que vemos del Infierno en ciertos planos se puede notar dicho CGI, al igual que sucede con Nicky y sus hermanos al utilizar sus “poderes demoníacos”. Obviamente estos detalles visuales de la época tienen su toque humorístico.
De resto, los efectos visuales prácticos que maneja la película no están para nada mal en comparación. También el hecho de que hayan hecho hablar a un perro es un logro que admiro un poco. Otra cosa que no descarto es el trabajo de fotografía, sobre todo al utilizar las paletas de colores y tonos para cada escena acordes al entorno y contexto. El tema del maquillaje, diseños de algunos vestuarios que utilizan ciertos personajes también resaltan por sí solos. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, pero como ya les dije antes, prefiero más la banda sonora que tiene esta película. Una película que NO recomiendo para nada.
Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 4/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia y fantasía oscura.
