Saludos, amigos. Regreso por aquí para compartir mis impresiones sobre la película King Richard, la cual es protagonizada por Will Smith. Es una obra biográfica de la familia Williams, cuyo foco está en el padre de las famosas tenistas Venus y Serena, el argumento se basa en cómo él tenía un plan estratégico para que ellas se convirtieran en las mejores atletas de este deporte, incluso antes de que nacieran. La motivación de Richard, inicialmente, está en la cantidad de dinero que le pagan a una tenista tras ganar un trofeo, así lo vio en la televisión, desde ese momento proyecta el futuro de sus hijas.
Cuando tenemos un biopic en nuestras manos queremos tener una mirada más íntima de las personas a las cuales representa, así conocer otros detalles que no han sido públicos hasta ahora. Considero que esto no sucede con este film, ya que al ser supervisado y producido por las hermanas Williams, no muestran los hechos crudamente sino que los acondicionan para endulzar la realidad. También hay que mencionar que Smith cumple la función de realizador, elemento que influye en la ejecución del producto cinematográfico.
Los medios de comunicación, en general, han cuestionado, desde hace bastante tiempo, los métodos del padre de Venus y Serena, pero en el film, a pesar de que se muestra manipulador, obsesivo, severo y obstinado, también lo exhiben como un hombre humilde y amoroso, que no desea apurar el crecimiento profesional de sus hijas y prioriza su educación. En este punto, el argumento nos habla de superación y disciplina. Richard jamás abandonó sus ideales y se mantiene firme hasta lograr las metas que se ha propuesto.

It is a biographical work of the Williams family, whose focus is on the father of the famous tennis players Venus and Serena, the argument is based on how he had a strategic plan for them to become the best athletes in this sport, even before that they were born Richard's motivation, initially, is in the amount of money that a tennis player is paid after winning a trophy, as he saw it on television, from that moment he projects the future of his daughters.
When we have a biopic in our hands, we want to have a more intimate look at the people it represents, thus knowing other details that have not been public until now. I believe that this does not happen with this film, since being supervised and produced by the Williams sisters, they do not show the facts crudely but rather condition them to sweeten reality. It should also be mentioned that Smith fulfills the function of director, an element that influences the execution of the cinematographic product.
The media, in general, have questioned, for quite some time, the methods of the father of Venus and Serena, but in the film, despite the fact that he is shown to be manipulative, obsessive, severe and stubborn, they also show him as a man humble and loving, who does not want to rush the professional growth of his daughters and prioritizes their education. At this point, the argument tells us about improvement and discipline. Richard never abandoned his ideals and remains firm until he achieves the goals he has set for himself.
Bajo esta tela fina, veremos cómo una familia afroamericana se abre cancha en un deporte que era dominado por élites blancas y adineradas. En ese sentido, Venus y Serena, dos chicas negras, se convierten en ejemplos de constancia para muchos adolescentes en pleno proceso como atletas, rompiendo con los estereotipos. Los inicios fueron bastante difíciles, la mayoría de los entrenadores no creían en ellas, pero ante cada negación se levantaban más enérgicas, ya que su padre era el motor que las dinamizaba.
La cinta solo exhibe la niñez y parte de la adolescencia de las chicas, la carrera exitosa de las hermanas Williams queda fuera de la pantalla. Además, el largometraje se enfocó en los primeros pasos de Venus, dejando a Serena a la sombra, con una mínima participación. Este hecho es un poco curioso, pues la historia nos demostrará, que Serena será la tenista más exitosa, logrando mayor número de trofeos y reconocimiento mundial. Claro, sin obviar, que ambas son muy talentosas. Con esto bromean en el film al insinuarle a Richard que no se puede tener dos Mozart en casa, los hechos llegaron para contradecir esta teoría.
Por otra parte, también se matiza el racismo, Richard experimenta las consecuencias en Compton, el barrio peligroso donde crecieron. Allí vive de cerca la violencia de unos pandilleros y presencia el asesinado de un vecino, el cual queda impune. Sin embargo, son pequeñas pinceladas que no se profundizan. Aunque están ahí para recordarnos que esta familia pasó muchos sinsabores, antes de posicionarse en la fama.
El film también resalta la importancia de vivir cada etapa y no dejar que la presión de los entrenamientos y torneos desmoronen la personalidad, enfatizando una baja autoestima. Muchos deportistas, por iniciar una carrera prematura, han caído en depresión, el desgaste mental fue demasiado, lo que provocó que cayeran en el mundo del alcoholismo y las drogas, Richard quiso evitar este escenario para sus hijas, por eso que no las dejó competir hasta que estuvieran realmente preparadas.

In addition, the feature film focused on the first steps of Venus, leaving Serena in the shade, with minimal participation. This fact is a bit curious, because history will show us that Serena will be the most successful tennis player, achieving the greatest number of trophies and world recognition. Of course, without forgetting that both are very talented. With this they joke in the film by insinuating to Richard that you cannot have two Mozarts at home, the facts came to contradict this theory.
On the other hand, racism is also nuanced, Richard experiences the consequences in Compton, the dangerous neighborhood where they grew up. There he lives closely the violence of some gang members and witnesses the murder of a neighbor, who remains unpunished. However, they are small brushstrokes that do not deepen. Although they are there to remind us that this family went through many troubles, before positioning themselves in fame.
The film also highlights the importance of living each stage and not letting the pressure of training and tournaments break down one's personality, emphasizing low self-esteem. Many athletes, due to starting a premature career, have fallen into depression, the mental exhaustion was too much, which caused them to fall into the world of alcoholism and drugs, Richard wanted to avoid this scenario for his daughters, that's why he didn't let them compete until they were really ready.
Como se ha evidenciado, el director Reinaldo Marcus Green y el guionista Zach Baylin nos ofrecen una historia sencilla, enfocándose en los diálogos y las actuaciones de cada personaje, lo cual tiene su mérito. Por supuesto, desde el enfoque del padre. Los momentos de angustia se afrontan muy bien desde su apartado musical. Asimismo, la fotografía de Robert Elswit imprime especial emotividad en los momentos más desesperanzadores.
La actuación de Will Smith me parece muy buena, está llena de matices, en él recae casi todo el peso dramático de la cinta. Es un hombre inteligente que desea ver triunfar a sus hijas, por eso, muchas veces, es severo, egoísta e intransigente, también logra generar empatía con el espectador al mostrarse como humano lleno de defectos, pero con mucho amor por su familia. Podríamos cuestionar las razones que impulsan sus acciones, al pensar que es ambicioso pues desea tener las comodidades que permite el dinero. Igualmente, que está frustrado y quiere que sus hijas cumplan los sueños que él no pudo. Quedará de parte de cada espectador dilucidar el mensaje que transmiten con estos pasajes.
Las coprotagonistas son Saniyaa Sidney (Venus) y Demi Singleton (Serena), quiénes hacen muy bien sus interpretaciones, explorando dimensiones dramáticas variadas ya que, en escena, comparten un vínculo fraternal. Muestran cualidades actorales y se desenvuelven adecuadamente, diría que a la altura de las dos grandes tenistas que estaban representando. Las otras hermanas solo están en el film como relleno.
Otro personaje de gran valor es el de Aunjanue Ellis (Oracene, esposa de Richard), quién realiza una actuación impecable, lamentablemente siempre estuvo a la sombra de Will Smith, aun así demuestra sus cualidades histriónicas. Oracene deja que su esposo tome todas las decisiones a pesar de que, en ocasiones, no esté de acuerdo con su sistema, ella cree en el talento de sus hijas y en el proyecto de Richard, ambos fungieron como coachs de Venus y Serena en su infancia.

Of course, from the father's point of view. The moments of anguish are faced very well from its musical section. Likewise, Robert Elswit's photography prints special emotion in the most hopeless moments.
Will Smith's performance seems very good to me, it is full of nuances, almost all the dramatic weight of the film falls on him. He is an intelligent man who wants to see his daughters succeed, that is why, many times, he is severe, selfish and uncompromising, he also manages to generate empathy with the viewer by showing himself as a human full of defects, but with a lot of love for his family. We could question the reasons behind his actions, thinking that he is ambitious because he wants to have the comforts that money allows. Likewise, that he is frustrated and wants his daughters to fulfill the dreams that he could not. It will be up to each viewer to elucidate the message they convey with these passages.
The co-stars are Saniyaa Sidney (Venus) and Demi Singleton (Serena), who do their performances very well, exploring various dramatic dimensions as, on stage, they share a brotherly bond. They show acting qualities and perform adequately, I would say at the level of the two great tennis players they were representing. The other sisters are only in the film as filler.
Another character of great value is that of Aunjanue Ellis (Oracene, Richard's wife), who performs impeccably, unfortunately she was always in the shadow of Will Smith, even so she demonstrates her histrionic qualities. Oracene lets her husband make all the decisions despite the fact that, at times, he does not agree with his system, she believes in the talent of her daughters and in Richard's project, they both acted as coachs of Venus and Serena in their childhood.
También mencionaremos a Jon Bernthal como Rick Macci, un entrenador de gran mérito que cree en el potencial de las chicas, pero que continuamente tiene altercados con Richard puesto que no comparten su visión. Su entusiasmo lo hace que no desfallezca y se mantenga firme con Venus y Serena hasta observar los frutos de todo su esfuerzo. Este actor realiza una actuación aceptable.
Todo indica que algunos detalles no son fieles a la realidad, sobre todo, la escena del partido contra Aranxta Sánchez Vicario, una tenista profesional a la cual Venus se enfrenta cuando tenía 14 años. Vicario, en una entrevista, manifestó que no estaba de acuerdo con el enfoque que le habían dado a su personaje en el largometraje, pues la colocaban como una tramposa, lo cual no ocurrió así.
A la luz de todo lo expuesto, queda en evidencia que la película se perfila, básicamente, en la convicción de Richard Williams, de que podía convertir a sus hijas en dos tenistas excepcionales, las mejores del mundo. Por ello, el foco de atención es exponer los orígenes de la familia y los obstáculos que tuvieron que experimentar para alcanzar la fama. Pese a los desaciertos que ya hemos revisado, considero que este largometraje funciona por sus eficientes actuaciones y sus diálogos emotivos, lo cual está en perfecto encuadre.

Everything indicates that some details are not true to reality, especially the scene of the match against Aranxta Sánchez Vicario, a professional tennis player that Venus faced when she was 14 years old. Vicario, in an interview, stated that she did not agree with the approach that had been given to her character in the feature film, since they placed her as a cheat, which did not happen that way.
In light of all the above, it is clear that the film is basically outlined in the conviction of Richard Williams, that he could turn his daughters into two exceptional tennis players, the best in the world. Therefore, the focus of attention is to expose the origins of the family and the obstacles they had to experience to achieve fame. Despite the mistakes that we have already reviewed, I consider that this feature film works because of its efficient performances and its emotional dialogues, which is in perfect frame.
