Kevin Smith’s latest comedy brings the audience back to the eighties and era that has been very trendy lately with multiple productions trying to generate nostalgia within the audience, the most recent example is the comedy Didi (2024). Times when it was the norm for young people to sneak into movies and hang out for extended times, there was no Netflix so take streaming experience to the streets. This is a coming of age story that is based in a theater and the movie shows a group of friends go through the fun and thrills of theater hopping for a day. It running time of one hour and twenty eight minutes means that the audience will have a fun time, being taken through the glory days of movie theaters. The film is R rated indicating that we shall expect some naughty jokes and even such scenes where these teenagers will be portrayed as engaging in activities that are prohibited, but at the same time just having fun, most likely nothing that put others life at risk. With a talented and vast cast of comedians and some fresh new faces the film seeks to bring out the feel of the 80s youth and the joy of going to the movies. The movie was made in Kevin Smith’s own Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey and therefore is a more realistic representation of the actual movie theater of the 1980s. The project is Smith’s 16th and it is a indie comedy film which is close to the type of films that Smith has made in the beginnings of his career at the same time it proves that he has evolved as a filmmaker.

A Day of Cinema Adventures

The fact that Smith chose SModcastle Cinemas as the shooting location makes the scenario quite believable, the theater is owned by Smith himself and was his favorite theater when he was a teenager, imagine to fulfill such dream. In terms of sets and props, and even the costumes, a lot of attention was paid to ensuring that they were from the period that the events of the show were set in, they even changed the name of the theater back to the more historical correct Atlantic Cinemas for the film. To increase the feeling of remembrance, the movie includes items that were in use before the time of digital technology like the use of physically connected phones and direct conversation, with such contrast to the current situation when the majority of communication is carried out with the help of the text is indicative of how people interacted over the decades.

The Cast

Supporting the young cast is a list of prominent comedians. Justin Long one of Smith’s friends adding expirience from other productions such as "Dodgeball" and "Jeepers Creepers", another Smith regular is Jason Lee who starred in "Mallrats" and "My Name is Earl" and he brings his own brand of comedy to the series.

4. Rebellion against the norms of the society and the conflict between generations.
5. The growth of the cinema and the significance of actually going to the place, not streaming.

The idea to place the story in the 80s opens the possibility to discuss themes that are universal and can be linked to the time of the events, giving the audience some insights before they jump in, insights on how the society and youth culture have developed over the past few decades. The film can be consider way much more than a simple reminiscence film of a certain era, since it is quite a tribute to friendship, disobedience and most importantly the magic of the movies.

The Killer’s Game is a film that the few who knew about it have been waiting for literally a long time nearly three decades, as it took quite a long time for the script to go through the development phase. This movie has faced a lot of problems and transformations since its conception in mid 90s as an action comedy thriller film adapted from Jay Bonansinga’s novel of 1997. The process of making this movie seems to be a movie in itself with various studios, directors and actors being attached and detaching to the film at some point, kinda of similar to whats going on with Blade aat Marvel. Finally under the direction of J. J. Perry and starring Dave Bautista this movie is expected to provide the audience with quite an unpredictable and full of action ride.

The plot focuses on an experienced contract killer who upon receiving a lethal diagnostic on his health plans to kill himself. This decision starts a sequence of actions that must be categorized as complete chaos and anarchy, in the course as the hero struggle against numerous opponents and his desire for revenge, he learns that the preliminary diagnosis was incorrect, after the event this assumption set the path for a strong combination of the suspense, action and black humor, which should help to create a new vision of the assassin’s world.

After so many years on the making, the film manage to gather quite the cast and crew, the film’s director and producers are determined to make the movie packed with great action scenes at the same time, comedy and deeper drama. Long development time could have been beneficial for the project because during that time the project could have been matured and it could have brought changes to its concept.

The Plot

A whole army of former coworkers comes out of the woodworks, every one of them a talented murderer with his or her reasons for it, these assassins all jump the protagonist like vultures and what we get is an action packed with some black comedy.

Its interesting and very cleaver to make the audience believe they understands the story line making everyone believe it is as simple that Joe is willing to die so early on the story but in fact he is presented with some new fact which alters everything.

Audience Expectations and Reactions

It is expected that the movie touch certain themes but do not develop much on them as the main focus is action and comedy, drama is going to take over a secondary element to the movie. Themes like Ethical guidelines in high profile occupations for as I'm sure there are a couple of killers who once work with Joe now willing to kill him to cash on the bounty. Redemption and second changes in life, very well represented by the event where Joe is told that the diagnosis was wrong and he is not dying anytime soon, huge impact by misinformation that almost end his life, two themes that are so important now days in society as we don't often give second chances to others while destiny does to us.

I'm not expecting the movie to be a dramatic one but based on the overall environment and main events that goes into Joe's life this are a few of the themes the film might focus on, plus it is expected to be a lot of comedy within the film.

The film in itself is an example of perseverance and patience as it took so long to be finish, nearly three decades of Hollywood’s output. The director J. J. Perry also contributes, who works with stunt experience and action choreography, which will provide quality action scenes when joined with the lead actor Dave Bautista and other talented actors and actresses the movie can offer a unique and entertaining experience.

I can see how many can be a bit skeptic about this movie considering everything is has gone through, the more positive audience might think all that time serve well to get it prepare but in reality things don't necessarily happen that way in real life, I also have my doubts if this is just going to be an average movie with a lot of hype after the trailer.

Constellation (2024) is an exciting sci fi series that will transport you to a world which is full of surprises and unknowns of space travel, that's is for sure but there are a couple of things that didn't go so well, probably a bit confusing too, although I still consider its a good series. The show is about Jo, played very well by Noomi Rapace, who comes back to Earth after a space disaster and finds herself having gaps in her life, deja vu type of scenarios. Jo’s character is not willing to let this go without consequences, she decides to start her journey to reveal the secrets of the space mission and get back what was taken from her.

Constellation starts off with an amazing suspense that will make you sit and want more, its the type of series that you will feel the need to watch one episode after another. The series demands your full attention as the story and the plot twists are rather not so clear and you may easily get lost if you are not paying attention. The visuals are great, the setting and the special effects are amazing makes you really feel like you are in the world of the series. Noomi Rapace does make you feel Jo’s pain and her transformation. The rest of the cast, including Jonathan Banks and James D’Arcy are also good and the series is very well acted overall. Constellation has been likened to other science fiction productions like Gravity, Arrival and The Martian, and it is not hard to understand why, they are all alike in a certain aspect.

Cast Got No Problem

Jonathan Banks, very seasoned character actor from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul plays Henry, the scientist who may hold the key to the events going on with Jo. Banks gives Henry a kind cynic when it comes to worry about others and also has a certain air of remorse, which suggest that he has a lot of history that he is running from, probably a reason to focus so much on his work, trying to escape from reality. The interactions between Banks and Rapace are intense with Jo trying to get information from a man who seems to be more concerned with hiding things than with providing her with the information she needs.

The enigmatic character of Frederic is played by Julian Looman, since we wont have a second season we were basicall left unsure of his intentions and loyalty for most of the series. Looman’s acting is ambiguous and for this reason he contributes to the suspense of the series. Paul role is played by William Catlett, Jo’s co worker astronaut on the ISS, who adds a certain level of friendliness and togetherness to the character next to Jo, Catlett does not has much screen time but leaves a good impression and his character’s death is used to drive the plot for a good portion of the series.

Barbara Sukowa is excellent as Irena Lysenko, the ex Russian cosmonaut who is now in charge of the space program that Jo is in / was?. Sukowa is quite good player her part as Irena who must deal with the political consequences of the ISS tragedy while also dealing with the tragedy on a personal level, there are some great moments between her and Banks/Henry, as the two seasoned actors have great on screen chemistry and this gets pass to their characters.

A new horror movie is on its way to the big screen that has some potential on the psychological horror aspect but there are certain things that make the doubt it. Max and Sam Eggers are the directors and scriptwriters of this movie, which is to be a psychological thriller with plot that sounds and looks like cliche but at the same time I dont remember watching a horror movie where the stepmother was such an evil person and one of the main characters, I'm sure there are but probably very few with a score over 8. It is a film about a young couple who are expecting a baby but they have to move in with the husband’s stepmother which right from the start is not the most peaceful person. The film is also kinda of short with only 94 minutes long so audiences I would expect a fast moving story that wastes little time getting to the point and creating tension, has to be an in your face type of scenario that can work on its favor since the topic is not too complicated. There is fresh blood in the cast with actors as Brandy Norwood, Kathryn Hunter and Andrew Burnap, as well as seasoned actors, which may point to the performances that could lift the movie above the standard in the horror genre. This is the latest from A24, the production company that has brought us a couple of great horror movies like Talk to Me (2023), Pearl (2022) just to mention a few recent ones that are quite engaging and thought provoking in terms of themes, aesthetics and social commentary, all of which has set quite high expectations for a movie that is potentially heavy on all of these aspects while exploring other themes of family, duty and the oppressive nature of familial bonds.

Behind the Scenes

The Eggers Brothers' Vision

The shooting of the series occurred in August and September 2022, and most of the scenes were shot in New Jersey, most of the shooting happen in a house in Boonton, an office building in Parsippany Troy Hills and Fairleigh Dickinson University in Florham Park, with this choice of locations seems to indicate a wish to anchor the the series more into the real world, although this locations would probably only appeal or familiar to those from New Jersey. The chosen location were also influence by the music composer Marcelo Zarvos whose input will also lift the suspense and tension within the film and the kind of psychological horror that the story offers. The film enter post production in February 2023 and quickly start to buzz as probably one of the best horror movies of the year, bit big of a tittle but time will tell.

Cast and Characters

Kathryn Hunter has received wide recognition for her previous roles in multiple well known productions, especially in Shakespeare parts; she will be part of the cast. All three witches in Joel Coen’s "The Tragedy of Macbeth" are a recent example of her skills in delivering an enjoyable and memorable performances which makes her casting rather the perfect fit for the role, a very very uncomfortable character to watch on The Front Room.

The youngest of the main cast is Andrew Burnap, who has mostly display his talent in Broadway for which he has received awards, the fact that he has won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a role for "The Inheritance" shows his dramatic skill that he will definitely take to this psychological horror film.

Another member of the cast is Neal Huff, who for some reason I remember from such successful and well received films as "Spotlight" and "Mare of Easttown", I don't remember seen him on the trailer so I'm not sure how he will impact the story, he plays the role of a Pastor, with the presence of Huff adds another seasoned actor in the interpretation of this horror family conflict film.

Plot and Themes

It seems that the film will be focused on such themes as family relations, generational conflict and the problem of care, because towards the end I'm sure someone going to say fuck this I'm sick of it and just leave. It may explore how family care responsibilities interfere with each individual choices and well being in society. Pregnancy is an aspect of the story that could be used to tackle issues of motherhood and the expectation of women’s bodies, certainty Solange character have a lot to say about the what pregnancy is handle by Belinda.

Based on the trailer the film might even expose racial family issues, the film can discuss the subject of interracial relationships or the difficulties of black women in white families, I hope it just keep it to one scene and does not become the on going topic for the film. I personally looking into any type of supernatural or psychological aspects of the movie since it would explain a lot of why this old women just want to hurt them out of nothing.

Exactly after 36 years of fans waiting, I saw the original movie during the 90s and love it, the follow up to Tim Burton’s classic supernatural comedy is set to be released in cinemas. The first movie that came out in 1988 show the audience a world of chaos that is Beetlejuice a spirit that is called out by saying his name three times, its funny how this second iteration of the film has his name twice on it so a clear indicative that a third movie might be on the works just before jumping into this second iteration. It was a cultural hit, the cartoon itself was a success, mixing the whimsical with the dark side in a way that people all around the world found fascinating, back in the day there was no IMDB of RTT but they still manage to collect data now days showing an 82% acceptance from the audience and 85% from critics. Now Burton has revive the "Ghost with the Most" for another round of the after life comedy, the new film brings back some of the major actors from the first movie and also brings in new actors to the series. While waiting for this much awaited sequel, people have mixed feelings of joy and wonder on how Burton will be able to recreate the same kind of experience that the first movie gave to its audience and at the same time come up with new ideas, lets consider that back in the day there was a large following of kids watching the cartoon, we are all adults now but probably our interest have change drastically. In an attempt of attracting both the old and new audience the sequel is a combination of elements from the past and new ones.

Some of the new faces that will be seen in the new iteration include Jenna Ortega of the recent Netflix series Wednesday portrays the role of Astrid, the teenage daughter of the protagonist Lydia, she had to be born in the perfect time and era to catch twist two very gothic theme productions that fit her perfectly. Ortega really proved herself in Wednesday and her ability to play the dark and eccentric characters which is ideal for Beetlejuice.

Willem Dafoe is also on the cast as Wolf Jackson, a ghost detective in the afterlife, we all know Dafoe is a talented and a very versatile actor who has appeared in many films such as Platoon and Spider Man. Monica Bellucci is Delores, the mysterious wife of Beetlejuice, an Italian actress and model have worked in Hollywood as well as in European films, she gorgeous women, great addition that will attract a good amount of male audience to the film.

The cast for the new Beetlejuice movie is no joke, a very talented and versatile one, with Keaton comedy side, will be a new and innovative sequel of the popular movie, combining the spirit of the first part with the enthusiasm of young actors.

Character Connection and Continuation

Tim Burton's Vision

Family drama and the development of the mythology of the afterlife can give context and substance to go with what is expected to be the humor and visuals, AI, CGI and special effects are going to be a key factor too. I have notice that online there are a few articles with enough reason to challenge Keaton and Burton, if they both still have what it takes to make this film a success, is not the first time for the audience and critics to have divided opinions, I would guess it was the same case on the first movie was not that warmly welcomed at first either, it was an adaptation of a cartoon. This entire situation is the perfect drama for something great, the king that is coming back to repeat and becoming and icon of comedy and gothic style movies.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is the fourth installment of the Bad Boys film series, it was released in cinemas on the 20th of August 2024 and it was produced after 27 long years of the first Bad Boys film which came out in 1995. The movie was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah; the same director from the previous Bad Boys movie in 2020 known as Bad Boys for Life. Main roles remain the same been Will Smith playing Mike Lowrey and Martin Lawrence playing the role of his partner Marcus Burnett, both are back on the force and together again in Miami as the OG Bad Boys. The movie also has Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Eric Dane and Jacob Scipio who is playing the role of Mike’s son Armando. Bad Boys: Ride or Die attempts to bring back the successful aspects of the first films, action, comedy and the buddy cop relationship between Smith and Lawrence, but at the same time it attempts to introduce some new elements, mainly action sequences shots, to keep the franchise going in 2024, but how successful they were?.

The Plot

The Action

Mike and Marcus are not portrayed as super cops, but just simple policemen, the film presents them as if they are almost immortal this concept probably comes form Marcus vision, thereby eradicating all chances of thrill out of the stunt because we already know they most likely not dying, are they going to keep making Bad Boys movies? come on. We never get the impression that they are in any actual danger, even when the bullets are flying and the cars blowing up around them, do they ever die?, lets be honest in an action movie what is violence and shooting if there are no consequences, no body count?, all main characters make it out?

Another problem is that some of the action scenes are shot and cut in a way that makes them barely comprehensible, which is a pity since Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah proved they are capable of much more in Bad Boys for Life. Its been mention online that for this installment of the franchise they also overuse the CGI and green screen especially for the larger stunts, they look fake and cartoonish.

So while Bad Boys: Ride or Die does have a couple of memorable action scenes that demonstrate the directors’ promise, but the action is uneven and there’s little of the raw energy or genuine feeling of danger if we already know only bad guys dying, yes its a Bad Boys movies cops always win movie but for part of the audience it makes it boring.

How It Compares to the Previous Films

For instance, as usual the major conflict is that Mike and Marcus have to prove their innocence after being accused of crimes they did not commit, and once again the show’s main theme of Mike as the reckless lone wolf is in contrast with Marcus, the family man. These are purely Bad Boys cliches and they are getting rather tired at this point especially for a fifth version.

Desde el momento en que Liam Neeson protagonizó “Taken”, abrió las puertas para que actores de cierta edad se convirtieran en héroes de acción; muchas producciones explotaron esa idea lo cual generó (como es normal) películas buenas y malas, pero de igual manera siempre fue interesante ver a personajes usar toda su experiencia y su edad como un arma para hacer justicia desde una posición en donde parecieran ser vulnerables, pero la realidad fue otra; está es una gran idea siempre pudo tomar diferentes rumbos y me alegra por fin ver un film que tenga de base lo antes descrito, pero con temas más cotidianos o reales.

From the moment that Liam Neeson starred in "Taken", he opened the doors for actors of a certain age to become action heroes; many productions exploited that idea which generated (as usual) good and bad movies, but it was always interesting to see characters using all their experience and age as a weapon to do justice from a position where they seemed to be vulnerable, but the reality was different; This is a great idea that could have always taken different directions and I'm glad to finally see a film based on the above, but with more everyday or real themes.

Esta es una comedia con necesarios elementos dramáticos dirigida y escrita por Josh Margolin, la cual es la primera vez que dirige un largometraje en su corta carrera; su trabajo es correcto al enfocarse brevemente en la simple vida de una mujer que debe nuevamente arriesgarse para hacer justicia y es ahí en dónde debe explorar otras zonas de Los Angeles, lugar en donde se desarrolla la historia, esto es algo que aprecio porque me gusta ver esa ciudad en películas y el director crea buenas tomas en diferentes zonas que tienen mucho significado para los protagonistas, sea en un hogar, en un ancianato, en una calle o zona solitaria o hasta un cementerio; es un trabajo muy simple, pero perfecto para la película que es.

El guion es excelente, es lo mejor del film, es una historia con tantos matices cómicos y la vez dramáticos que envuelven a todos los protagonistas, existe un paso desde lo divertido, cómico a lo que realmente puede ser un duro drama y si, para eso uso la vejez de sus personajes, entre eso hay escenas sumamente cómicas y a la vez otras que pueden crear hasta ansiedad de verlas y eso es magnífico porque no funciona como burla para las personas ancianas, sino que muestra una realidad a la cual en algún momento de nuestras vidas debemos experimentar. Margolin realizó un gran balance entre la comedia y el drama en una historia de una mujer que muestra cómo aprende a lidiar con su vejez.

This is a comedy with necessary dramatic elements directed and written by Josh Margolin, which is the first time he has directed a feature film in his short career; his work is correct in focusing briefly on the simple life of a woman who must again risk to do justice and that is where he must explore other areas of Los Angeles, where the story takes place, this is something I appreciate because I like to see that city in movies and the director creates good shots in different areas that have much meaning for the protagonists, whether in a home, in a nursing home, in a street or lonely area or even a cemetery; it is a very simple work, but perfect for the film that is.

The script is excellent, it is the best of the film, it is a story with so many comic and dramatic nuances that involve all the protagonists, there is a step from the funny, comic to what can really be a hard drama and yes, for that I use the old age of his characters, between that there are extremely funny scenes and at the same time others that can create even anxiety to see them and that is great because it does not work as a mockery for the elderly, but shows a reality to which at some point in our lives we must experience. Margolin made a great balance between comedy and drama in a story of a woman who learns to deal with her old age.

June Squibb quien interpreta a “Thelma” lo es todo, su imagen es de la abuela dulce, querida, divertida, motivadora, confidente, amiga, todas esas características están presentes, ella lo realiza de una manera perfecta, pero también está esa fase en la cual se siente sola, dependiente y no quiere ser una carga para nadie y por eso necesita una última demostración de independencia lo cual es genial; el trabajo de June es muy bueno y me sorprendió que a sus 94 años de edad, este fue su primer rol protagónico; existen otros personajes que son importantes para la historia y uno es “Ben” interpretado por Richard Roundtree, creo que su personaje tiene la función de ser una voz o consejo razonable para Thelma, es un Sidekick, una gran ayuda, un fiel y valiente amigo que lidia también con la vejez de una manera diferente de lo que lo hace su gran amiga, este es un trabajo excepcional por parte de Roundtree, el cual fue su última actuación antes de fallecer el pasado año; otro buen personaje es el de “Danny” interceptado por Fred Hechinger, en él está personificado la frustración de una generación que no se siente capaz de hacer algo bien y siente culpa por lo que le sucede a su abuela así como el temor de una pronta e inevitable partida, posiblemente la subtrama enfocada en su personaje no tenga un impacto porque es más ligado al drama que la comedia, pero creo que la relación entre abuela y nieto es necesaria para la historia.

Thelma es una gran sorpresa, es una de las mejores películas que he visto en este año, es una buena historia familiar, es divertida, cómica, hubo momentos en que me reí a carcajadas, pero también es reflexiva, es real, trata muy bien temas como la depresión, soledad, la vejez y de como personas deben lidiar con esa etapa de la vida y eso me gustó, me hizo conectar con la película, le dio un mejor significado y aunque no obtuvo una gran recaudación o gran aceptación del público, si de la crítica, solo que queda decir que posiblemente esta es una de las mejores comedias del año, recomendada en un 100%.
