There was a time when women were seen as invisible human beings, unfortunately. This is a stain that will never be erased from historical records anywhere in the world. Fortunately, over the decades things have changed, society has evolved and, although the current scenario is still not ideal (because obviously there are many issues that still need to be discussed), the future for women is brighter. This movie is proof of this, that having its story (based on real events, by the way) focused on three black women, shed a little light on this shadow.

Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson (brilliantly played by the trio Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe, respectively) are three black women, determined, poor, but with an aptitude considered “unusual” for this genre, at least by society of an extremely prejudiced time. Prejudices begin to be broken when they themselves break the barriers of what was considered impossible. Helping directly in one of the most important American special missions, the trio marks their name in history.

Without a doubt, one of the things I like most about this movie is how the script manages to impose dramatic questions amidst the narrative development involving special science, which is totally dependent on numbers in all their complexity (at least for what was studied at the time). In fact, nothing is superimposed the entire time, and the movie brings the weight of both sides (personal and professional) in a very moving way, and at certain moments disconcerting due to the absurdity of the prejudice that occurred in that decade. A well-posed narrative equation.

Diving deep into the numbers, the movie highlights very well the importance of this science through computers and other machines responsible for building/directing rockets in the special orbit, making it possible to launch crews amid the immensity of the universe. Practical examples (such as the use of calculations on a chalk board) are used very frequently, making the plot even more dynamic amid all the social issues that work behind the scenes (the fight against professional prejudice, race and also gender) a powerful and necessary plot.

20th Century Studios

Although he uses a slightly generic (and simplistic) look at times, director Theodore Melfi does a great job with Hidden Figures, because the project manages to transcend the screen and inspire people anywhere in the world. Pursuing your own dreams and turning them into something real can be very difficult (and even impossible for some people), but it's movies like these that make the impossible a matter of opinion. A real drama becomes a great story of overcoming in the midst of the science of numbers and its fantastic and infinite possibilities.

Concurso CineTV: “Figuras ocultas”, el reconocimiento femenino dentro de la ciencia de los números.

Lamentablemente hubo un tiempo en el que las mujeres eran vistas como seres humanos invisibles. Esta es una mancha que nunca se borrará de los registros históricos en ningún lugar del mundo. Afortunadamente, con el paso de las décadas las cosas han cambiado, la sociedad ha evolucionado y, aunque el escenario actual todavía no es el ideal (porque evidentemente todavía quedan muchos temas por discutir), el futuro para las mujeres es más prometedor. Esta película es prueba de ello, que al tener su historia (basada en hechos reales, por cierto) centrada en tres mujeres negras, arroja un poco de luz sobre esta sombra.

Los prejuicios empiezan a romperse cuando son ellos mismos los que rompen las barreras de lo que se consideraba imposible. Ayudando directamente en una de las misiones especiales estadounidenses más importantes, el trío marca su nombre en la historia.

Sin duda, una de las cosas que más me gusta de esta película es cómo el guión logra imponer preguntas dramáticas en medio del desarrollo narrativo que involucra una ciencia especial, que depende totalmente de los números en toda su complejidad (al menos para lo que se estudió en el tiempo). De hecho, nada se superpone en todo el tiempo, y la película trae el peso de ambas partes (personal y profesional) de una manera muy conmovedora, y en ciertos momentos desconcertante por lo absurdo del prejuicio que se produjo en esa década. Una ecuación narrativa bien planteada.

Profundizando en los números, la película resalta muy bien la importancia de esta ciencia a través de computadoras y otras máquinas encargadas de construir/dirigir cohetes en la órbita especial, permitiendo lanzar tripulaciones en medio de la inmensidad del universo. Se utilizan con mucha frecuencia ejemplos prácticos (como el uso de cálculos en una pizarra), lo que dinamiza aún más la trama en medio de todas las cuestiones sociales que operan detrás de escena (la lucha contra los prejuicios profesionales, la raza y también el género), una poderosa y trama necesaria.

Aunque a veces utiliza una mirada ligeramente genérica (y simplista), el director Theodore Melfi hace un gran trabajo com Figuras ocultas, porque el proyecto logra trascender la pantalla e inspirar a personas en cualquier parte del mundo. Perseguir tus propios sueños y convertirlos en algo real puede ser muy difícil (e incluso imposible para algunas personas), pero son películas como estas las que hacen de lo imposible una cuestión de opinión. Un verdadero drama se convierte en una gran historia de superación en medio de la ciencia de los números y sus fantásticas e infinitas posibilidades.

Concurso CineTV: “Estrelas Além do Tempo”, o reconhecimento feminino dentro da ciência dos números.

Já houve um tempo em que as mulheres eram vistas como seres humanos invisíveis, infelizmente. Esta é uma mancha que nunca será apagada dos registros históricos em toda e qualquer parte do mundo. Felizmente, ao longo das décadas as coisas mudaram, a sociedade evoluiu e, apesar do cenário atual ainda não ser o ideal (porque obviamente há muitos assuntos que ainda precisam ser discutidos), o futuro das mulheres é mais brilhante. Este filme é uma prova disso, que tendo sua estória (baseada em fatos reais, aliás) focada em três mulheres negras, jogou um pouco de luz nessa sombra.

Henson, Octavia Spencer e Janelle Monáe, respectivamente) são três mulheres negras, determinadas, pobres, mas com uma aptidão considerada “incomum” para este gênero, ao menos pela sociedade de uma época extremamente preconceituosa. Os preconceitos começam a ser quebrados quando elas mesmas quebram as barreiras do que era considerado impossível. Ajudando diretamente em uma das missões especiais americanas mais importantes, o trio marca seu nome na história.

Sem dúvidas, uma das coisas que eu mais gosto neste filme é como o roteiro consegue impor as questões dramáticas em meio ao desenvolvimento narrativo envolvendo a ciência especial, que é totalmente dependente dos números em toda à sua complexidade (ao menos para o que era estudado na época). De fato, nada fica sobreposto o tempo inteiro, e o filme traz o peso dos dois lados (pessoal e profissional) de uma maneira muito emocionante, e em certos momentos desconcertantes pelo teor absurdo do preconceito que acontecia naquela década. Uma equação narrativa bem posta.

Mergulhando fundo nos números, o filme evidencia muito bem a importância dessa ciência através dos computadores e outras máquinas responsáveis por construir / direcionar foguetes na órbita especial, sendo possível lançar tripulações em meio à imensidão do universo. Exemplos práticos (como o uso dos cálculos em lousa com giz) são usados com uma frequência muito boa, tornando a trama em algo ainda mais dinâmico em meio a toda questão social que trabalha nos seus bastidores (luta contra o preconceito profissional, de raça e também de gênero) uma trama poderosa e necessária.

Embora utilize um olhar um pouco genérico (e simplista) em alguns momentos, o diretor Theodore Melfi faz um ótimo trabalho com *Estrelas Além do Tempo, porque o projeto consegue transcender à tela e inspirar as pessoas em qualquer parte do mundo. Correr atrás dos próprios sonhos e torná-los em algo real pode ser muito difícil (e até impossível para algumas pessoas), mas são filmes como estes que tornam o impossível em uma questão de opinião. Um drama real se torna em uma ótima estória de superação no meio da ciência dos números e suas fantásticas e infinitas possibilidades.

I recently finished watching The Red Rooms and it's a great film. I had it on my list since it was presented last year at the Sitges Film Festival and it's very unfair that it doesn't get as much exposure, but that's always the case. Some gems are hidden because distributors (and platforms) prefer films that are more to the taste of the majority.

This is the third feature by Canadian director Pascal Plante, whose first film, The False Tattoos, I had seen several years ago. A very remarkable work as it showed that the filmmaker has an undeniable talent for directing, I recommend you seek it out to check it out. I haven't seen his second film Nadia Mariposa, but I will try to look for it, because I was fascinated by The Red Rooms.

Defining the genre of the film may open a small debate among cinephiles. Although most of the entries in directories such as IMDB classify it as suspense, it is also a somewhat disturbing psychological thriller because some sequences provoke horror, which has been my case. It is a work that surprises with a beginning that seems like a courtroom movie, but as it progresses it takes a subtle but effective turn.

Hace poco terminé de ver The Red Rooms y es una gran película. La tenia en mi lista desde que se presentó el año pasado en el Festival de Sitges y es muy injusto que no tenga tanta difusión, pero siempre es así. Algunas joyas quedan ocultas porque las distribuidoras (y las plataformas) prefieren películas más afines al gusto de la mayoría.

Este es el tercer largometraje del director canadiense Pascal Plante, cuya primera película, Los falsos tatuajes, había visto hace varios años. Un trabajo muy destacable ya que demostraba que el cineasta tiene un talento innegable para la dirección, les recomiendo buscarla para echarle un vistazo. No he visto su segunda película Nadia Mariposa, pero intentaré buscarla, porque me ha dejado fascinado con Las habitaciones rojas.

Definir el género de la película puede abrir un pequeño debate entre cinéfilos. Aunque la mayoría de las entradas en directorios como IMDB la clasifican como suspense, también es un thriller psicológico algo perturbador porque algunas secuencias provocan horror, ese ha sido mi caso. Es una obra que sorprende con un comienzo que parece de película de tribunales, pero que a medida que avanza da un giro sutil pero efectivo.

What the filmmaker does with the camera is a marvel. The predominance of tracking shots in almost every scene makes the viewer feel uncomfortable. At the same time, the atmosphere is extremely cold. The courtroom, the lonely streets, the protagonist's flat. Locations with a cold and distant atmosphere, but instead of distancing the viewer from the story, they make the intrigue more attractive.

The handling of suspense is another of its attributes and how certain sequences increase it. There are sequences that disturbed me. They are disturbing, although there is nothing grotesque, there is nothing explicit. But that's why I highlight the filmmaker's skill, for making a scene of a woman in front of her computer screen keep me in suspense. There is also a scene inside the courtroom that is fantastic. I would have liked to have seen it on a cinema screen, but such films never make it to theatres in my country, and if they did, they would be ruined by the awful dubbing.

The story revolves around Kelly Anne, a beautiful woman who works as a model, has a very comfortable life and earns money with online poker and internet business. She attends the expected trial of Ludovic Chavalier, a serial killer nicknamed The Demon of Rosemont, accused of being the perpetrator of the murder of three underage girls by making snuff films. There he meets Clementine, a young woman in love with the accused who fervently believes in his innocence. But the big question is: what the hell is Kelly Anne doing attending the trial, what is she after, what does she want, what is she doing there?

Lo que el cineasta hace con la cámara es una maravilla. El predominio de los travelling en casi todas las escenas hace que el espectador se sienta incómodo. Al mismo tiempo, la atmósfera es extremadamente fría. La sala del tribunal, las calles solitarias, el piso del protagonista. Localizaciones con una atmósfera fría y distante, pero que en lugar de alejar al espectador de la historia, hacen más atractiva la intriga.

El manejo del suspense es otro de sus atributos y cómo determinadas secuencias lo incrementan. Hay secuencias que me han perturbado. Son inquietantes, aunque no hay nada grotesco, no hay nada explícito. Pero por eso destaco la habilidad del cineasta, por hacer que una escena de una mujer frente a la pantalla de su ordenador me mantenga en vilo. También hay una escena en el interior del tribunal que es fantástica. Me hubiera gustado verla en una pantalla de cine, pero este tipo de películas nunca llegan a las salas de mi país y, si lo hicieran, quedarían arruinadas por el horrible doblaje.

La historia gira en torno a Kelly Anne, una hermosa mujer que trabaja como modelo, tiene una vida muy cómoda y gana dinero con el póquer en línea y los negocios por Internet. Ella asiste al esperado juicio de Ludovic Chavalier, un asesino en serie apodado El Demonio de Rosemont, acusado de ser el autor del asesinato de tres chicas menores de edad mediante la realización de películas snuff. Allí conoce a Clementine, una joven enamorada del acusado que cree fervientemente en su inocencia. Pero la gran pregunta es: ¿qué demonios hace Kelly Anne asistiendo al juicio, qué persigue, qué quiere, qué hace allí?

Model and actress Juliette Gariepy plays Kelly Anne, deserving of the accolades and awards she received for that character. Her work is truly convincing. It is a role in which she is asked to show a lot with her eyes and she succeeds. She is the protagonist and we will see her descent to the dark side. She has everything, a great career, money, prestige, but the obsessions are stronger, those that lead us to commit crazy things to feel that moment of pleasure. What are her motivations? Why is she so interested in the murderer? Everything will become clear, but the journey will be unsettling.

I have taken note of another film by this actress. You Can Live Forever. I hope to see her soon, and hopefully she will get more offers. I think she has a lot of potential and it will be a pleasure to see her in upcoming productions. The rest of the cast is very little known. I don't remember having seen most of them, only Maxwell McCabe-Lokos is a familiar face from some supporting role in films or series that I don't remember. Perhaps because it is a film without celebrities it gets little attention.

A disturbing story about obsessions and the darker side of the human being. It's a pity that most people didn't like it.

La modelo y actriz Juliette Gariepy interpreta a Kelly Anne, merecedora de los elogios y premios que recibió por ese personaje. Su trabajo es realmente convincente. Es un papel en el que se le pide que muestre mucho con la mirada y lo consigue. Es la protagonista y veremos su descenso al lado oscuro. Lo tiene todo, una gran carrera, dinero, prestigio, pero son más fuertes las obsesiones, esas que nos llevan a cometer locuras para sentir ese momento de placer. ¿Cuáles son sus motivaciones? ¿Por qué está tan interesada en el asesino? Todo se aclarará, pero el viaje será inquietante.

He tomado nota de otra película de esta actriz. Puedes vivir para siempre. Espero verla pronto, y ojalá reciba más ofertas. Creo que tiene mucho potencial y será un placer verla en próximas producciones. El resto del reparto es muy poco conocido. No recuerdo haber visto a la mayoría, sólo Maxwell McCabe-Lokos es una cara conocida de algún papel secundario en películas o series que no recuerdo. Quizás por ser una película sin famosos recibe poca atención.

Una historia inquietante sobre las obsesiones y la parte más oscura del ser humano. Lástima que no haya gustado a la mayoría.

She tells all her fans through a documentary that this is a disease that she has been suffering from for more than 18 years and that she has been hiding it and justifying it with other diseases while she canceled some concerts she said she had otitis or sinusitis, any disease was valid to justify her discomfort, she was not very clear about the definition of the disease nor what causes it, today it is known that it is a disease of the nervous system and that makes it impossible for her to sing because it appears unexpectedly from one moment to another paralyzing the muscles of the body including the vocal cords.

They decided to make this as a documentary to tell the world directly and clearly once and for all what was happening to her and put an end to the lies and excuses. Now all she has left is to try to prevent the attacks and stay alive to be able to enjoy her children, although it is clearly shown that for her singing is living and this part of her life has her dead in life.

I really enjoyed the documentary especially to see things of her real life, part of her environment, her home and to know that human being who is there suffering from this disability that can not be removed even with my millions and that is why we should be grateful even if we do not have a penny in our pockets to enjoy good health, that is the greatest treasure we all have and that we should value and appreciate.

Recently at the 2024 Olympics the guest singer for the opening celebration was Celine Dion where she appeared singing in French, after watching the documentary I can only admire this artist and I leave with the thought of all the work, suffering and effort she had to do to perform and give this show, now that I know her story I admire her much more.

It has been a while since I have written a series review. The truth is, while I’ve been watching all of it, I feel a little less compelled to write about it. Lately, the series I am watching is mostly Chinese Drama with a few Korean series on the side. I think these series don’t really have that many audiences outside the APAC region. So, that’s also another reason why I don’t really review them anymore BUT there’s one Korean series that I recently watched and captured my attention.

This series can be classified into Makjang, an over the top story containing multiple plot twists and almost too good to be true/believable. It’s about the 0.01% of people in South Korea and their life’s intrigue called the High Class. I came to know this series a long time ago when I was still a subscriber to VIU. I thought it was a horror movie so that’s why I skipped it. At the same time, during those years, such drama gained popularity too. There are some dramas like Penthouse and Sky Castle that are similar to High Class.

High Class, while carrying a similar plot, is set on picturesque Jeju island. It has some contrasting settings that are mostly set in ultra urbanized society like Seoul. Setting in Jeju, the people there are mostly hotel owners, local politicians as well as celebrities who also owned the restaurants. The characters that are presented in the movie were a little more foreign compared to the one set in Seoul.

Much like similar drama, it was also showing one woman’s fight against her society and her surroundings. It was showing how tough a single mother can be dealing with whatever problems throws at them. At the same time, the socialites character also shows that their lives were all smoke and mirrors. There are ugliness behind their attempt to showcase what a perfect and successful life should be.

Starred by Cho Yeo-Jeong, this series has its own appeal. She is known for the woman in the award winning story, parasite. The other actors and actresses are also quite well-known in K-drama. If you are a fan of Cho Yeo-Jong, this is one of her best works and a way to get to know her more.

Would I really recommend this k-drama? well perhaps but if you don’t enjoy makjang stories, it’s best to save 16 hours of your time to watch another korean series/film.

¡Hola amigos! En el día de hoy les vengo a compartir mi reseña acerca de la película Tornados. Este tipo de historias sobre fenómenos naturales y climáticos siempre me gustaron y fui una gran fan de su antecesora por lo que tenía muchas ganas de ver esta nueva versión. Bueno, empecemos.

Hello friends! Today I'm here to share with you my review of the movie Twisters. I always liked this kind of stories about natural and climatic phenomena and I was a big fan of its predecessor so I was really looking forward to see this new version. Well, let's get started.

Trama - Plot

La película sigue la historia de Kate, una joven cazadora de tormentas que estudia el comportamiento de los tornados porque tiene este proyecto donde busca disolverlos y que no causen más destrozos a las poblaciones. Pero todo se viene abajo cuando ella y su grupo de amigos se cruzan con un tornado del más alto nivel en una de sus cacerías y 3 de ellos pierden la vida. Ahora Kate está alejada de las tormentas, haciendo su vida en Nueva York, hasta que uno de sus amigos sobrevivientes la busca para que vuelva a cazar tornados porque tiene un equipo especializado y tecnología avanzada para poder estudiarlos en Oklahoma que es la ciudad que más esta siendo azotada por estos fenómenos meteorológicos. De esta manera, Kate decide hacerle frente a sus temores y se embarca en esta peligrosa misión donde deberá encontrarse a ella misma de nuevo.

The film follows the story of Kate, a young storm chaser who studies the behavior of tornadoes because she has this project where she seeks to dissolve them and stop them from causing more destruction to populations. But everything falls apart when she and her group of friends come across a tornado of the highest level in one of their hunts and 3 of them lose their lives. Now Kate is away from the storms, making her life in New York, until one of her surviving friends looks for her to go back to hunting tornadoes because he has specialized equipment and advanced technology to study them in Oklahoma, the city that is most affected by these meteorological phenomena. Thus, Kate decides to face her fears and embarks on this dangerous mission where she will have to find herself again.

Como podrán ver, no hay nada nuevo acá, pero para los que nos gusta este tipo de películas siempre es bueno cuando sale una nueva, aunque sea más de lo mismo. A mí se me hizo súper interesante de entrada, tiene bastante acción de golpe y la verdad es que no me decepcionó para nada, obtuve lo que andaba buscando de esta película.

As you can see, there's nothing new here, but for those of us who like this kind of movies it's always good when a new one comes out, even if it's more of the same. I found it super interesting from the beginning, it has a lot of action all at once and the truth is that I wasn't disappointed at all, I got what I was looking for from this movie.

Por supuesto que no podían faltar las escenas de tensión donde la pasé realmente mal cuando se enfrentaban a un tornado y algo no salía según lo planeado porque lo cierto es que no puedes predecir cómo va a reaccionar un fenómeno de estas características. Pero al mismo tiempo, Kate tiene un don para ello y lo hacía muy bien. Me gustó mucho su personaje.

Of course, there were the tense scenes where I had a really hard time when they were facing a tornado and something didn't go as planned because you can't really predict how such a phenomenon is going to react. But at the same time, Kate has a knack for it and she did it really well. I really liked her character.

Cuando vi al personaje de Tyler pensé en que le habían dado un papel horrible a Glen Powell, pero al final me terminó sorprendiendo. Me gustó mucho más su forma de trabajar y la de su equipo que la de los otros. Son unos dementes, pero le dieron el sentido humorístico y adrenalínico a la película.

When I saw Tyler's character I thought they had given Glen Powell a horrible role, but in the end he surprised me. I liked the way he and his crew worked much better than the others. They are insane, but they brought the humor and adrenaline sense to the movie.

La película es bastante extensa de duración, pero ni la sentí porque estaba muy enganchada con la trama y todo se me hacía interesante. La disfruté muchísimo y sin dudas la volvería a ver. Tuvo bastantes momentos trágicos, aunque podrían haber dado un poco más ah jaja, pensé que iba a ser algo más dramática en algún momento, pero no me estoy quejando eh. De lo que sí me voy a quejar es que me dejaron con las ganas de ver algún beso entre dos personajes. Esto solo porque soy una romántica empedernida y siempre tengo la esperanza de obtener un poco de amor en todo lo que veo.

The movie is quite long in length, but I didn't even feel it because I was very engaged with the plot and everything was interesting. I enjoyed it a lot and I would definitely watch it again. It had quite a few tragic moments, although they could have given a little more ah haha, I thought it was going to be a little more dramatic at some point, but I'm not complaining eh. What I will complain about is that I was left wanting to see a kiss between two characters. This is only because I'm a hopeless romantic and I always hope to get a little love in everything I watch.

Así que en líneas generales me gustó mucho esta película, hubo momentos muy entretenidos y otros donde la pasé fatal pero era lo que esperaba de esto por lo que lo agradezco. Sin dudas, se las recomiendo si no la vieron.

So overall I really liked this movie, there were some very entertaining moments and others where I had a terrible time but it was what I expected from this so I appreciate it. Without a doubt, I recommend it if you haven't seen it.
