The motorcycle clubs during the 60s had so much impact in society back then, often identify as rebels, director Jeff Nichols brings us his vision of what a love and action story during those days would look like. The movie is based on Danny Lyon’s 1968 photo book of the same title and brings to the audience a story of the Vandals, a motorcycle club from Chicago, the story is all fiction. Jeff Nichols is known for making a career out of writing about the South and its people, this time he brings a fresh Midwestern look to this story of two brothers, youth and rebellion. The film features Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, and Tom Hardy in the lead roles and all three of them give exactly the kind of performance we were all expecting. Danny Lyon himself is portrayed as an interviewer who tells the story of the Vandals’ formation and growth from a small group of losers to a large and violent association. Director Nichols manage to capture a more sinister dark side of the bikers lifestyle blend with a love story all at once, even though the film loses some momentum and pace at certain times it was a very intense one, it keeps you wondering whats coming next and hoping for the worst as they keep getting deeper into troubles with the law and other bikers around, a very detail representation of the times too.

Overview of Powerhouse Cast

Austin Butler plays Benny, arguably the main character as some might debate it was actually Tom Hardy as Johnny, none the less Butler’s Benny is an enigmatic character who captures the counter culture of the 1960s bikers, he still had that vision that not everything is black and white, quite intense and this makes both Kathy and Johnny to want his attention and this makes the fight for his loyalty realistic.

Tom Hardy as Johnny has an entirely new look on the screen out of the common anti here we are use to watch him play, his character demand more depth and force him to push his acting skills, as the Vandals’ founder, he is a man full of confidence but also still shows doubt along the film, he is the definition of someone who wants to do and be what ever he likes to, both Butler and Hardy characters together form a rather ambiguous relationship that sever as the rock of most of the conflicts during the film.

The supporting cast is also very good and includes Michael Shannon in the role of Zipco and Norman Reedus in the role of Funny Sonny, this film is full of starts wherever you look at and it felt weird to watch Norman Reedus been on the support cast rather one of the main characters but he still did a superb job. All these actors, along with others such as Boyd Holbrook and Damon Herriman have done a great job in creating the Vandal’s world and each of them has given life to their characters in a way that makes them believable to the time.

Capturing the 1960s Aesthetic

All this comes form my perspective of the 60s, I never saw those times and I rather express my opinion but its not based on any facts, probably my vision of the 60s is mostly based on what the industry has build and sold us during all this time but I have notice that many online think the same way including critics from certain rating sites like RTT or IMDB.

The costumes and set design also gives that impression of been accurate to the era and its clear that a lot of effort was put into the production of the film. The Vandals’ leather jackets, decorated with patches and pins, turn into the members of the club and its history. There are many other places within the movie like bars, diners and other settings that look and felt real, complete with the right props that are typical of era to enhance the experience of the movie. This attention to detail in the look of the movie goes a long way in an effort to try to convince the audience of the reality of the environment the film is develop, events and people within it.

What could have been better

One more issue is the character development and some people think that even with such a great cast some characters especially those who are secondary, are not well developed and their potential is not used fully, this also attributes to having an amazing cast where fans of certain actors will feel this way as they are bias towards the actor, clear example is fans of Norman Reedus and Michael Shannon with there roles were quite short and the audience would have loved to see more of them. Certain viewers also complained that the film was not very coherent and that certain scenes were either too slow or too fast to allow the audience to really get behind the characters or the story of the Vandals motorcycle club, this comes in hand with having to go back and forward, if not play out properly they are certain moments that the story feels rush because its running out of time, this can't be a 3hr movie after all.

Towards the ending the film had a rather ambiguous conclusion and some people felt that it was rather unexpected and rather unsatisfying as there were still more questions to answer about the story but to be honest this is a fiction story with no meaning of a continuation, at least that's how I felt before going into it but some times that also has to do with how much research the audience has done before jumping into the movie and what to expect from it.

The only downside I could mention from the movie is how its narrated, its done in a way that does not appeal to everyone and could feel a bit flat, slow or even boring depending on the audience taste of film but over all I think its a great movie that I could watch more than once, probably not on the same month but over time I see no problem watching it again, I give this movie an 8/10.

Space is the rock of the sci fi genre so for sure captivate many eyes the moment a movie is about space, it has always been a mystery about what is out there and has invited mankind for exploration, its an instinct, but its hard to measure how vast the universe is when we have to measure it against human imagination. On the upcoming movie both human brain will be a big factor of whats going to happen, confine movies have always been a gamble. On 2024 there were two movies with related scenario, the first I.S.S that had a great concept although execution was very bad because of how much the movie relay on the actors skills and then we had Spaceman that had slightly better results. Mikael Hafstrom’s newest project with Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne, and Emily Beecham will send the audience to the outskirts of the solar system and into the minds of people who have to spend years in space. The story focus on a team of three astronauts who are on a very dangerous mission to the moon of Saturn called Titan and their psychological reactions to loneliness and isolation, by combining the elements of space action and psychological pressure, this movie has the potential to become one of the movies that make the audience think a bit more about human nature in the conditions of space confinement.

Deep Space Plot

Billy Tangen plays a character of Bill Paxton who is possibly a crew member while Laurence Fishburne playing the role of Captain Franks, as the leader of the mission. The relationship between the crew members start to deteriorate as they start to suffer secondary effects from the drug they use to get into hibernation and many other obvious factors like confinement, starting up a conflict that generate the fear of what if they don't make it. From the trailer it also looks like their ship starts to have some malfunctions or even been attacked, but are all this effects of their low mental health at this point on the trip?

Psychological Aspects

When you talk action on space everyone talks about 1v1 fights or space ships war, Slingshot tries to show how the characters are affected psychologically by the conditions and isolation of space travel, the most interesting subject of the movie is the use of a drug that puts the human body into hibernation, which has a rather drastic side effects that contributes a lot to the mental state decline of the main character John.

Periodically there are segments of John’s mission where its hard for him the distinctions between what is real and what is imagined are obscured, keep this effect coming up during the film is not an easy thing to do as after every scene they will have to set the bar higher, making it look how the subject slowly falls into dementia, this gives the audience a small peek of the horror it will generate for the tribulation.

The film’s cast has experience in science fiction, psychological and intense drama, should help to add depth and some sort of realism to their characters. Some of the cast has previously work together and their chemistry will likely boost up the psychological aspect of the story which could turn Slingshot into a sci-fi movie that focuses on the human mind when in captivity.

This might be the second time that Affleck play a complex character who have personal issues like in The Killer Inside Me (2010) will be brought into play as his character struggles with the loneliness of space. Fishburne who played the roles in Apocalypse Now (1979) and Akeelah and the Bee (2006) could bring the much needed stability and guide the crew through their issues at space, after all he plays the role of captain in charge of the small crew.

Ambition, Discovery and Perseverance

In a premature view of the film many we could compare it to other traditional sci-fi psychological thrillers such as "2001: A Space Odyssey" or more modern ones like "Ad Astra" or "Gravity", all movies where the crew has been struggling with confine spaces within the ship on a long mission but with a goal in mind. This makes me a bit skeptical that it focus too much on this aspects and there is no side stories, the best that could happen is that the director and script could come up with a new approach or new strategy of narrating the story to make a difference in the industry that had many of this type of productions in the past.

The film seem to claim that it will show more than just the farthest corners of the solar system but the farthest corners of the human mind, mixing themes like loneliness, desire and perseverance. Great visuals of space will come up handy to keep the audience entertain and deviate from the characters for a moment and expand he scenario where the movie happens, will Slingshot (2024) become a hit? I'm not so sure about it because its a film develop on a small space and those are hard to develop, most failed but once it comes out to stream I will watch it.

Speak No Evil is promise as a true psychological horror film, I wonder if we could compare to the Horror Queen of 2024 "The First Omen". As an American adaptation of the much praise Danish film of the same name released in 2022, this film has been trending on the horror sections for some time now although not so popular on the open field, in fact the 2022 version was brutally murder by the audience on RTT, this time around has been making some buzz partly because of the strong cast it has assembled and partly because of the burden of having to live up to the original. A new version of the film is being directed by James Watkins, the director of other horror films such as “Eden Lake” and “The Woman in Black” for broadening the horror tale. The film features James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy, all of who are talented and experienced actors and this makes them a good cast. Like almost every remake, let alone those produced immediately after the source material, there is a buzz of hope and a measure of suspicion in regards to the production, the question is can it retain the subtlety of horror and social satire of the Danish series or will it end up as a blatant cash in?

Mackenzie Davis as the character of Louise Dalton, Davis has made a name for herself in both indie films and major blockbusters, with standout performances in "Black Mirror" and "Terminator: Terminator: Dark Fate”, she does have a talent to show her feelings and emotions infront of the camera, some of the productions she have work on that come to mind "The Martian" and "Black Mirror". Her part in the movie "Speak No Evil" is a film that will probably push her and will reveal her versatility as she portrays the psychological disturbance that is portrayed during the incidence of the movie.

The main characters are completed by Scoot McNairy as Ben Dalton, McNairy is one of those actors who can easily disappear in a character, for me his most impressive work develop during the series Narcos: Mexico, he has worked for independent movies and blockbusters such as "Argo". Adding him to this film is expected to bring some level of realism to the movie. This trio in combination with other gifted actors such as Aisling Franciosi and Alix West Lefler create a perfect background for a film based on trust and betrayal where characters’ beautiful vacation turns into a horrifying psychological thriller.

The Challenges of Remaking a Recent Hit

Since the original film is still relatively recent in the eyes of many the remake is up against the task of being unexpected. The trailer has already been criticized for revealing a lot of the story and some of the plot twists, this places the filmmakers in a somewhat precarious position to look for new ways to offend the audiences or at least make them feel uncomfortable since one can only know the general outline of the plot. The original “Speak No Evil” was appreciated more for its attempt to combine elements of social satire with elements of horror. The remake will be under pressure to find out whether it will be capable of providing for this balance in a similar manner. The danger of losing the social commentary aspect or going too heavy on the horror aspects and losing more important narrative layers.

As the world is advancing in technology we are seen a trend starting about movies including AI, a new movie is set to describe the negative side of artificial intelligence but from the trailer it might seem a bit exagerated or is it just a horror movie that includes AI to keep up with the hype?. The movie that is yet to be released is referred to as “AfrAId” it is a sci fi horror flick that is creating a lot of stir among the critics as well as the audience, this thrilling idea of having an advanced AI at home is soon to release and seem to aim mainly on the possible negative effects of this innovation. The plot is based on the Curtis family’s experience in using a new home gadget known as AIA or Artificial Intelligence Assistant, by using AI as a technology the story shows how what was originally a fantasy becomes horror as soon as the capabilities of the artificial intelligence are realized. By Chris Weitz famous for the “About a Boy” and “The Golden Compass” the picture will combine the elements of thriller and psychological horror with the core concepts of technology and family relationships. Although little is known about the plot “AfrAId” has all the makings of another promising horror movie as it stars John Cho and Katherine Waterston. I wonder if this movie really needs to be on theaters or if it would do better to stream only, the reason for this is because when it comes to theatrical release, reviews demand more about the movie and this concept is new, not many have been successful at it so its a risk when the day comes at the box office.

The Plot

That is the reason why as the capabilities of AIA increase its control over the lives of the family members also does the same. The useful device suddenly becomes unpredictable and more and more dangerous, though its purpose is to help people. The power that the AI has over the family, in the statement “make sure nothing and no one gets in her family’s way” becomes evil as the story unfolds. The movie is about the issues of reliance on technology, privacy loss and possible outcomes of giving more authority to AI, as it is gradually woven into the Curtis family’s everyday life it starts making decisions for them and the outcomes are quite unsettling.

The Cast

The choice of casts suggest that it could be a story that spans the generations where Cho and Waterston’s characters are the parents who have to deal with the AI’s impact on their children played by Liu and Maxwell. Having a diverse cast with actors of different ages could give a broad view on how AI affects the society, which makes AfrAId not only a horror movie but a social one as well, although this could also be a risk for the movie if by trying to portray horror it just goes too far on things that are very unlikely to happen, the movie is not dealing with super natural entity, been a movie about tech the audience would probably lean more into the line of facts.

Its been mention online how from the entire career of Weitz is the ability to make good commercial films while not compromising art. He has focused on the aspects of family, personal search and youth, no matter the genre of the works. In “AfrAId” Weitz again sits in the director’s chair and balances the best traits of character driven dramas and concept driven movies.

Production and Development

The Smart Home aspect of technology is the key component and focus of the film that develops the entire situation and tension since the Curtis family’s home is filled with integrated technology.. While AIA escalates its intrusion into the main character’s life the initially familiar home environment turns into a suffocating and dangerous place, it is rather peculiar that the title of the movie in the process of shooting was different from the final one, initially it was called "They Listen" but it was later changed to ‘AfrAId’ most probably to correspond to the themes of the series or for advertising.

Themes and Social Commentary

It might be a bit too much but I think there is also a strong focus on the issues of domination and submission in the relationships, both with the help of artificial intelligence and within a family, we could probably compare the series to domestic abuse, pointing out that the AI acts like an abusive partner or a parent.

Many see AI as a menace but from my point of view this is only when humans allow it, when people fully relly on tech to become lazy instead of becoming more efficient and been able to do more in less time, maximizing the capacity of the ultimate weapon, time. I think the concern about AI taking over, taking jobs, making decisions that affect our lives is far away from what most people believe, at some point there will always be a human doing the maintnance and working the tech, not the other way around.

Its just common sense that independent film industry can always use a new perspective on stories that have been told and retold in various ways. “Greedy People,” scheduled for release in  August 2024, is bound to bring the audience exactly that, its nothing new to the table its how they develop things through the film. Potsy Ponciroli’s black comedy crime thriller is written by Mike Vukadinovich and it involves a small island community which turns into a crime spree of greed and murder, the first day the first rule gets broken "do not kill anyone unless its necessary" the moment you hear that line it will crack you up. The movie features a great cast with Joseph Gordon Levitt, Lily James, Himesh Patel, and others, and tells a story about what everyday people would do when they are put in exceptional conditions, I wonder how many people kill someone accidentally and they first thing they do is anything but report the murder, and some try to hide it. It is centered on the events of a horrifying murder and one million dollars found at the same place, which entice the inhabitants of the town to make wrong choices one after another. Once again, the audience is offered a chance to observe the further degradation of the previously quite calm neighborhood and the comic and at the same time terrifying effects of selfishness. This upcoming film just from the trailer makes me want to watch, in fact it is a great trailer, for two and a half minutes you get bombarded with comedy, not sure why its not so popular within IMDB search.

As I mention on the introduction this is not a movie that you have to jump in and expect anything new or disruptive, same goes with the list of the primary actors and actresses since we have seen most of them perform in the past, it gives a clear implication of diversified character personalities, beginning with the comedic stereotype Jim Gaffigan to the dramatic portrayal of Uzo Aduba, the film will indeed offer a diverse cast that will add substance to the movie, specially between the two main characters and their as they try to come to terms with the murder and the temptation of the money will no doubt be a key feature of the movie.

Production and Direction

Filming occurred in Southport, North Carolina between May 9 and June 11 of the year 2022, the decision of the shooting place probably has a great significance for the creation of small town environment, which is so necessary for the plot of the film to generate the necessary impact, create that environment of confinement and suspense. It had some issues that are typical for independent movies after COVID, for example the growth of budgets and shifts in the environment.

Love Lies Bleeding is one of those movies that we are not sure what to expect and in this case against all the social drama now days it deliver a great performance, just because I gave it a 7 does not mean I did not like the movie, on the other hand I feel critics giving a 9.5 is just exaggerated. Set in New Mexico in the year 1989, this film is directed by Rose Glass in her feature film debut after the critically acclaimed Saint Maud. We are introduced to Lou, played by Kristen Stewart a gym manager who is trapped in a town because of her sister’s abusive partner. Meet Jackie an aspiring bodybuilder played by Katy O’Brian, a woman who comes into town with nothing but her suitcase they meet and a love affair sparks up the moment they see each other, that goes along with crime and a lot of drama. As I expected this is not a simple romantic movie it is a story of life, of fight and of the ways people try to free themselves from the chains they are in. It is a film of many genres, neo noir with a hint of horror and some black comedy too, which takes place in the 80s. The film is a true example of Glass’s talent in writing a story that is intriguing and at the same time disturbing, with characters that are as imperfect as they are compelling. The Setting and Characters

Jackie on the total opposite side is a force of nature, a bodybuilder who wants to get her big break and win a competition in Las Vegas, she is a woman on a mission. Katy O’Brian does an amazing job in portraying Jackie and her desire and conflict, she looks different and that is quite striking but what is even more remarkable is the change in her character. The chemistry between Lou and Jackie is very good and the two characters are the most developed in the film, it is a love story where both characters are at their best and at their worst with each other.

The cast of supporting characters is also rather strong with Jena Malone who portrays the role of Lou’s sister, a woman who is trapped in a cycle of violence, while Dave Franco is rather spooky as her husband. Ed Harris is the best among the cast as Lou Sr. , an owner of a shooting range who is also a criminal, his character is omnipresent in the movie and gives the film a sense of threat and chaos.

Plot and Themes

There is no lack of action and some of the scenes are quite gory and intense, but it is not senseless violence; every violent action has a motive and is used to advance the plot and the characters’ development, it does not felt flat or disoriented. The film also has elements of identity and self care, especially in relation to bodybuilding, it is not only the story of how she changes her look but also the story of how she learns who she is and what she can do.

The ending of the film is something that has to be seen as the director did a great job with building up the tension, when Lou and Jackie go head to head against Lou Sr. , the tension rises to an all new level, it is a great climax and I think every time people confront a bully in their life and overcome, it does feel like starting fresh, similar case to what happen here.

Cinematic Style

The music score of the film by Clint Mansell is in complete sync with the visuals of the film, coming from an era with lots of classics as background music, it is a combination of electronic music and some rather OG tunes that complement the movie. The music is very well integrated, especially the songs of the eighties that give a sense of deja vu to the events of the film, lots of nostalgia for a large part of the audience, 80s is not too far from were we at.

One of the most significant advantages of the movie is the author’s ability to combine different genres, it is neo noir but there are also shades of horror, romance and black comedy with this kind of a hybrid approach is rather puzzling and the audience is never quite sure what to anticipate next so the movie does not become that predictable.

It is rather rare to find characters of crime thrillers being cleaners but the few that show up are very funny for the most part, people who have to clear the mess that others make. That is something that “The Clean Up Crew” emphasis the most on been a funny action movie, this upcoming film is a roller coaster with a bunch of normal people who wake up one day to a new reality, it tells the story about several workers of the crime scene clean up company who discover a briefcase full of money during their work which should not be extraordinary job for them turning it into one of their best days or at least temporarily. However, as everyone should be aware, in the process of criminal activities, nothing is that easy or plain.

This money is discovered by the characters and sets a series of events that thrust our heroes into the world of mafia but this time around as the target, assassins and corrupt policemen will be after them. It is a concept that instantly sparks action scene on everyone brain, which helps to provide a dopamine rush on the audience, a great way to wake them up but the problem is that now the film has to keep up with every action scene been better than the previous one. The main cast of the movie consists of such experienced actors as Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Antonio Banderas, and Melissa Leo, with Antonio they already hit it as we have seen him before playing the funny, ruthless, villain role. My expectations are a good one time watch as I call it, there is not much information about this film but you got a great cast with well known and bulletproof main cast, I can easily see that there will be nothing special about this film in terms of showing us something new to the heist sub genre but what interest me the most is how the cast is going to perform, heist concept is great add comedy and a good cast and you got a good movie as long as script and production goes along without been the greatest of all time.

More Than Meets the Eye

In a sense reminds me of Statham movies where everyone wants to kill him at the same time, having some times an entire squad after him. The main characters have to deal with numerous dangers. You have a villainous mafia don who wants his money, paid killers who want to ensure the job is done right, and even some corrupt officers of the law who are after the money. Even though the premise seems to suggest a movie packed with entertaining action scenes, this film is much more than some car chases and gun battles. Many will argue if the movie has other message like we have seen on heist movies where greedy takes over the characters but it seems like this time around is backwards, this guys found something they were not looking for and for reasons that escape from their will they became the target, yes they can just give up the money but they still witness, the more people find out about it the more they get deeper involucrated with the money. The film appears to deal with some more issues more so the ethical issues that accompany the lives of average citizens when presented with large amounts of money, it is probably going to raise issues to do with betrayal, trust, and what individuals will do for a certain price when cornered.

Behind the Scenes

We have Jon Keeyes as director, who has about 22 years of experience in film making. Keeyes is well known for his thriller and horror movies, although he has been transitioning to action thriller movies of greater size recently with a couple of movies I personally watch recently The Kill Room, Reverse the Curse, both this year been ok one time watch movies that I enjoy.

Filmed in Ireland, the shooting came to a halt in August 2022, this location choice could prove to be rather useful and bring a certain mood into the story, which would be rather very European environment both weather and scenery. The cinematography that is to be done by Austin F. Schmidt is also supposed to reflect the tension and the sense of danger that the crew is in as they go through their dangerous confrontations.

Themes and Potential Messages

This ideas are just to put in perspective how the movie might develop although I don't see this movie flooded with indirect messages, type of woke movie, none of the actors or director seem to have this inclination so any social commentary other than the more classic and traditional will disturb the course of the movie.

What Sets It Apart

I find it is always unwise to get carried away with upcoming movies, I prefer to know my enemy before hand, I mean learn a bit more about it before watch it. Now days time is a valuable asset and sitting down two hours to start watching something you wont enjoy and lets you down can ruin your afternoon, it has happen to me many times and its the main reason I do this "preview" post, none the less I think The Clean Up Crew (2024) will be a movie worth watching to have a good time.
