Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film Ganadora del Oscar a Mejor Película Extranjera
I've had this film on my to-see list almost since its release, but more surprising than having let more than a decade go by before seeing it is the fact that until about four months ago I hadn't seen a single film by one of Italy's most celebrated directors: Paolo Sorrentino. My plans were to first see Fellini's La Dolce Vita (which I also haven't seen yet) and then explore some of Sorrentino's early work before getting to this story that earned him the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, then known as Best Foreign Language Film. But hey, as so often happens, life had other plans.
Tenía esta película en lista casi desde que se estrenó, pero más sorprendente que haber dejado pasar más de una década antes de verla es el hecho de que hasta hace unos cuatro meses no había visto ninguna cinta de uno de los directores de cine más celebrados de Italia: Paolo Sorrentino. En mis planes estaba ver primero La Dolce Vita de Fellini (que tampoco he visto aún) y luego explorar algunos de los primeros trabajos de Sorrentino antes de llegar a esta historia que le valió el Oscar en la categoría a Mejor Película Internacional, por entonces llamada Mejor Película Extranjera. Pero bueno, como tantas veces, la vida tenía otros planes.
La grande bellezza (The Great Beauty) is a dramatic comedy, a comic drama, a tragicomedy set in a summer in the mythical city of Rome that revolves around a society of men and women - mostly quite adults - who reflect the decadence, emptiness, corruption, banality, fear, crime and a whole host of vices - and very few virtues - derived from a life dedicated to entertainment or superficiality. Politicians, writers, actors, actresses, white-collar criminals, renowned journalists, fashion designers, artists, intellectuals, scholars of beauty and aesthetic treatments, share gatherings, dinners and parties in luxurious palaces and mansions full of banquets, wine, music and an apparent lack of concern for the real world that hides darker aspects of the human soul. In the middle of this whole circle is our protagonist, Jep Gambardella (played by Toni Servillo), a writer in his sixties who once wrote a very successful and celebrated book, but who since then has written nothing more and has dedicated himself to journalism, interviewing people who, although they belong to his same circle, seem less and less interesting to him. Jep's life seems like a dream from the outside: he has money, fame, he attends luxurious gatherings almost every night, his only desire is to have fun, but now, perhaps because of his age, or perhaps for some other reason, he feels bored, annoyed, and his surroundings seem increasingly hollow and depressing.
La grande bellezza (The Great Beauty) es una comedia dramática, un drama cómico, una tragicomedia ambientada en un verano en la mítica ciudad de Roma que gira en torno a una sociedad de hombres y mujeres - en su mayoría bastante adultos - que reflejan la decadencia, el vacío, la corrupción, la banalidad, el miedo, el crimen y toda una cantidad de vicios - y muy pocas virtudes - desprendidos de una vida dedicada al entretenimiento o a la superficialidad. Políticos, escritores, actores, actrices, criminales de cuello blanco, periodistas reconocidos, diseñadores de modas, artistas, intelectuales, eruditos de la belleza y los tratamientos estéticos, comparten tertulias, cenas y fiestas en lujosos palacios y casonas repletas de banquetes, vino, música y una aparente despreocupación por el mundo real que esconde aspectos más sombríos del alma humana. En medio de todo este círculo se encuentra nuestro protagonista, Jep Gambardella (interpretado por Toni Servillo), un escritor de más de sesenta años que tiempo atrás escribió un libro muy exitoso y celebrado, pero que desde entonces no ha escrito nada más y se ha dedicado al periodismo, a entrevistar a personas que, si bien pertenecen a su mismo círculo, le van pareciendo cada vez menos y menos interesantes. La vida de Jep parece un sueño desde afuera: tiene dinero, fama, asiste casi cada noche a tertulias lujosas, no busca sino divertirse, pero ahora, tal vez por la edad, o tal vez por otra razón, se siente hastiado, fastidiado, y su entorno le parece cada vez más hueco y deprimente.
Gambardella possesses the mental acuity and command of words necessary to make highly accurate critical observations, but he lacks the sympathy and compassion necessary to consider the feelings of others. He has affections, of course—his friends, his editor, and some romantic interests—but this increasingly cynical view of the world—of his world—is reflected in judgments that are often hurtful to the person in question, not because of the wrongness of the writer's words, but precisely the opposite.
Gambardella tiene la agudeza mental y el dominio de la palabra justas para realizar observaciones críticas muy certeras, pero le faltan la simpatía y la compasión necesarias para considerar los sentimientos de los demás. Tiene afectos, por supuesto, sus amigos, su editora, algunos intereses románticos, pero esa visión cada vez más cínica del mundo - de su mundo - se trasluce en juicios que muchas veces resultan hirientes para el aludido, no por lo errado de las palabras del escritor, sino precisamente por lo contrario.
Now, Jep doesn't think he's better than the rest. In his own words, the difference between him and some of his associates is that he knows his life is miserable, but instead of reflecting on himself and seeking to delve into his decadence, he evades any observation of a banal and weightless life amidst parties, luxuries, and the perpetual search for beauty, the intangible, the ephemeral. That's why we see him attending various venues, shows, art and photography exhibitions, parades, and parties, where the director takes the opportunity to also criticize concepts such as intellectuality and art, sometimes treated in such an elitist manner. With the right mix of comedy and tragedy, laughter and tears, so common and so well done by the Italians, Sorrentino gives us - through Gambardella - his own vision of contemporary society, so distracted by appearances and ephemeral pleasures, and so distant from its own conscience and from what is truly important, such as the mortality of the human body and the transcendence of the soul, concepts that also appear in the film through certain characters and spaces linked to the Catholic Church and religion, themes that are always present in the stories of this risky director who managed to win the BAFTA, the Golden Globe and the Oscar - among many other awards - over another great film, Jagten (The Hunt) by Thomas Vinterberg, with an extraordinary Mads Mikkelsen.
Ahora bien, Jep no se cree mejor que el resto. Según sus propias palabras, la diferencia entre él y algunos de sus allegados es que él sabe que su vida des miserable, pero en lugar de reflexionar sobre sí mismo y buscar indagar en su decadencia, evade toda observación de una vida banal y sin ningún peso en medio de fiestas, lujos y la perpetua búsqueda de la belleza, lo inasible, de lo efímero. Por eso lo vemos acudir a diferentes espacios, espectáculos, exhibiciones de arte, de fotografía, desfiles, fiestas, en donde el director aprovecha para criticar también esos conceptos, a veces tratados de forma tan elitista, como Intelectualidad o Arte. Con la mezcla justa entre comedia y tragedia, entre risas y llanto, tan frecuente y tan bien trabajada por los italianos, Sorrentino nos da - a través de Gambardella - su propia visión de la sociedad contemporánea, tan distraída en las apariencias y los placeres efímeros, y tan distante de su propia conciencia y de aquello que realmente tiene importancia, como la mortalidad del cuerpo humano y la trascendencia del alma, conceptos que también aparecen en la película a través de ciertos personajes y espacios ligados a la iglesia católica y la religión, temas siempre presentes en las historias de este arriesgado director que logró llevarse el BAFTA, el Golden Globe y el Oscar - además de muchos otros premios - por encima de otra gran película, Jagten (The Hunt) de Thomas Vinterberg, con un extraordinario Mads Mikkelsen.
Reflection, literature, religiosity, irony, banality, the condemnation and defense of melancholy, the inevitability of old age, the lament of lost youth, of lost time, of the abandoned home, the emptiness of the soul, the fruitless search for spirituality, corruption, secrets, wounds, life, love and death, all armed with an original script, exquisite photography and having the Colosseum and other spaces of the mythical Italian capital as a background, are the elements with which Sorrentino has built his most recognized and celebrated film to date.
Reflexión, literatura, religiosidad, ironía, banalidad, la condena y defensa de la melancolía, la inevitabilidad de la vejez, el lamento de la juventud perdida, del tiempo perdido, del hogar abandonado, el vacío del alma, la infructuosa búsqueda de la espiritualidad, corrupción, secretos, heridas, la vida, el amor y la muerte, todo ello armado con un guion original, una fotografía exquisita y teniendo de fondo el Coliseo y otros espacios de la mítica capital italiana, son los elementos con los que Sorrentino ha construido su película más reconocida y celebrada hasta ahora.
I feel like, in some ways, I've begun my relationship with Sorrentino in the opposite direction to the natural one. One option was to have watched his films chronologically, but I didn't do it that way. The other was to have started precisely with La grande bellezza and then revisit his work, but I didn't do that either. Instead, I began my contact with this Italian director just four months ago when I saw his latest film, Parthenope, which draws from the same source as this other story, but does so by paying a more direct and emotional tribute to Naples and youth. In my opinion, it's much more controversial with certain topics, but equally aesthetically beautiful. I'm left to continue reviewing his filmography, now in any order, from which I especially want to see L'uomo in più and Le conseguenze dell'amore (both with the wonderful Toni Servillo), La giovinezza and È stata la mano di Dio, a film that earned him another Oscar nomination, where he lost to Drive My Car by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, also an extraordinary film, although I would have given the statuette to the original Verdens verste menneskeaka (The Worst Person in the World) by Joachim Trier. Siento que, de alguna manera, he comenzado mi relación con Sorrentino en dirección contraria a la natural. Una opción era haber visto sus películas de forma cronológica, pero no lo hice así. La otra era haber iniciado precisamente con La grande bellezza y luego revisar otros trabajos, pero tampoco hice eso. En cambio, comencé mi contacto con este director italiano hace apenas cuatro meses cuando vi, la que hasta ahora es su última película, Parthenope, que bebe de la misma fuente que esta otra historia, pero que lo hace rindiendo un tributo más directo y emotivo a Nápoles y a la juventud y que, en mi opinión, es bastante más polémica con ciertos tópicos, pero igualmente hermosa en lo estético. Me queda entonces seguir repasando su filmografía, ya en cualquier orden, de donde quiero ver especialmente L'uomo in più y Le conseguenze dell'amore (ambas con el estupendo Toni Servillo), La giovinezza y È stata la mano di Dio, película que le valió una nueva nominación al Oscar, en donde perdió contra Drive My Car de Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, extraordinaria cinta también, aunque yo le hubiera dado la estatuilla a la original Verdens verste menneskeaka (The Worst Person in the World) de Joachim Trier.
