   The Archive 81 is a mystery series based on a podcast of the same name. It was released earlier this year in January, and soon enough, it had risen to the top.

   I had been seeing it a lot just recently again, as Netflix knows how to shove some shows in your face. I would say shove, as I had not seen any film of this kind at all on the streaming service. But I guess a lot of people were checking it out, so it landed on my suggestions page. I figured I would give it a try, as I am not so much a fan of mystery films, although I do enjoy them sometimes. It is not something I would normally look for.

   The show started on a very subtle note, developing quite slowly. But it was not long after that I started procrastinating some work just to pay more attention to the series.

   It is a show I would least expect to see, just by reading a few lines of description, because you do really expect me to see your film when you say it is about finding out what caused the fire in some apartment building 25 years ago. But I guess that is why it is tagged "mystery"; there is always more beneath.

   Before I begin to share how I perceived the series, let us delve into the plot a little:

   Dan is an archivist who specializes in restoring photos, audio and video tapes. He is a middle-aged man who has not always had the best life since he lost his family in a fire as a kid but still manages to become really good at his job.

   He gets hired to restore a collection of video footage by a filmmaker and as well to digitize them for a company, but many conditions are tied to it. He is taken to work at the location of the collection of tapes, which is in an isolated building in a highly remote area. He is well-provided for and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to work with.

   The tapes contain videos by a woman, Melody, who was working on her PhD thesis and making videos to gather information on a "sex cult" that is rumored to exist in the Visser apartment building. This happens to be the time when the fire that burned down the Visser apartment building in a fire in 1994 occurred, leaving no survivors.

   The company, L.M.G., employs the services of Dan to retrieve information from the video tapes so as to discover the unknown cause of the fire 25 years ago in the Visser apartment building.

   However, as Dan proceeds with the work, he discovers there is more to the tapes and untold stories of a cult group that had dealings with mythogies that date centuries back and are connected to some god that rules in the "otherworld".

   He finds himself connected to Melody, even though they are 25 years apart. And there seems to be a link between his family's death and the fire in the Visser apartment building.

   

   𝕄𝕐 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊 & 𝕆ℙ𝕀ℕ𝕀𝕆ℕ

   Well, first off, you can probably tell that it is going to be one heck of a film filled with mystery. But that was not what it seemed like at first. I normally would not have even given it a try, if I had just judged by the title. This is not to directly say that the series is great or so.

   It is a show that has two distinct types of audience; the ones that will totally love it and the ones that will totally hate it. There may not be many people in between these two categories.

   

   When it comes to making horror mystery films, it is very convenient for filmmakers to bring in concepts that are not usual so that their audience can be taken through an unknown terrain where the ideas that have not really been explored can have good effects in drawing the audience's attention. However, this can easily go sideways, as if it becomes too unrealistic, it could possibly repel the audience from going through with it.

   Let me go deeper into this a bit by exploring critical areas of concern:

   Initially, I felt the story was going to be pretty straightforward and nothing more than just a little suspense here and there. I was wrong. The whole story unfolded rather slowly and had such a stretch that it began introducing intertwined stories to make the entire film add up.

   For the longest part of the series, I was curious about how the whole thing was going to end. And it would have been a very good thing for the movie, considering that it was able to grab a strong hold of its audience's attention long enough, but I really did not like the fact that my attention was centered heavily on finding out how the fire happened.

   Perhaps it would have made more sense if the fire had had a large impact in the present day, 2019, but that was not the case, as the film made clear from the start.

   However, the film's purpose was to generate suspense and excitement in its audience through the small stories it delivered as the film went.

   There is quite a sublime linkage between these two times, 1994 and 2019. Many times, I could not even tell what was real and what wasn't. They eventually became clearer, but I still couldn't tell for many till the end.

   Other than the whole drama seeming a little over-stretched, the film did a very fine job of telling the story of an event through the tapes made. This was done without some kind of narration, but the videos in the tapes tell the whole incident by themselves. I commend this.

   I'd like to think the film's strength is in its storytelling, because there didn't seem to be much going on in this aspect.

   This is not to imply that the work done here was awful, but rather that it was not particularly impressive.

   But. I think this would be mostly the case in many mystery films so as to not distract the audience from what is to sell the film to them; the story. And to do this, the thrills need may need to be delivered in a subtle manner.

   So what we have is a film with minimal visual engagement.

   Seeing a film with actors who are unable to sell their characters effectively enough will deter viewers from engaging with the tale.

   The only actor with whom I had a connection was Mamoudou Athie, who played the pivotal role. Without his superb performance in portraying his character, I believe the film would have been far less successful.

   I particularly liked the fact that he was able to let us in on the mind of the character well enough to relate to all that was happening.

   For the other actors in the series, they did well enough to hold their characters, but I really did not feel connected to their roles any more than was needed to understand the story.

   

   𝕄𝕐 𝔽𝕀ℕ𝔸𝕃 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊...

   It is not a show I would consider binge-worthy. It is one that I would choose to see on days when I just want to see something to unwind. It's not an escapism film; it doesn't even belong there; rather, it's something I'd take the time to watch for the sake of passing time.

   But apparently, the show was cancelled. The streaming service, Netflix, did not explain why another show that was doing well in their catalog was cancelled. If the show gets renewed, I could actually consider following it as the first part ended on quite an intriguing note.

   I would give the series a rating of 6/10.

   El Archivo 81 es una serie de misterio basada en un podcast del mismo nombre. Se estrenó a principios de este año, en enero, y muy pronto se situó en lo más alto.

   Hace poco volví a verla mucho, ya que Netflix sabe cómo meterte algunas series en la cara. Digo empujar, ya que no había visto ninguna película de este tipo en el servicio de streaming. Pero supongo que mucha gente la estaba viendo, así que aterrizó en mi página de sugerencias. Pensé en darle una oportunidad, ya que no soy muy aficionado a las películas de misterio, aunque a veces las disfruto. No es algo que busque normalmente.

   La serie empezó con una nota muy sutil, desarrollándose muy lentamente. Pero no pasó mucho tiempo hasta que empecé a procrastinar algunos trabajos para prestar más atención a la serie.

   Es una serie que es lo que menos esperaba ver, sólo con leer unas pocas líneas de descripción, porque realmente esperas que vea tu película cuando dices que se trata de averiguar lo que causó el incendio en algún edificio de apartamentos hace 25 años. Pero supongo que por eso lleva la etiqueta de "misterio"; siempre hay algo más por debajo.

   Antes de empezar a compartir cómo percibí la serie, profundicemos un poco en la trama:

   Dan es un archivero especializado en restaurar fotos y cintas de audio y vídeo. Es un hombre de mediana edad que no siempre ha tenido la mejor vida desde que perdió a su familia en un incendio cuando era un niño, pero aún así se las arregla para ser muy bueno en su trabajo.

   Le contratan para restaurar una colección de cintas de vídeo de un cineasta y también para digitalizarlas para una empresa, pero le ponen muchas condiciones. Le llevan a trabajar al lugar donde se encuentra la colección de cintas, que está en un edificio aislado en una zona muy remota. Está bien provisto y cuenta con equipos de última generación para trabajar.

   Bueno, en primer lugar, probablemente se puede decir que va a ser una película llena de misterio. Pero eso no era lo que parecía al principio. Normalmente ni siquiera le habría dado una oportunidad, si sólo hubiera juzgado por el título. Esto no quiere decir directamente que la serie sea genial ni mucho menos.

   Es una serie que tiene dos tipos distintos de público; los que la amarán totalmente y los que la odiarán totalmente. Puede que no haya mucha gente entre estas dos categorías.

   

   Cuando se trata de hacer películas de terror y misterio, es muy conveniente que los cineastas introduzcan conceptos que no son habituales para poder llevar al público por un terreno desconocido en el que las ideas que no se han explorado realmente pueden tener buenos efectos para atraer la atención del público. Sin embargo, esto puede desviarse fácilmente, ya que si se vuelve demasiado irreal, podría repeler al público de seguir adelante.

   Permítanme profundizar un poco más en este tema explorando las áreas críticas de interés:

   Al principio, me pareció que la historia iba a ser bastante sencilla y nada más que un poco de suspense aquí y allá. Me equivoqué.    Quizás hubiera tenido más sentido si el incendio hubiera tenido un gran impacto en el presente, 2019, pero no fue así, como la película dejó claro desde el principio.

   Sin embargo, el propósito de la película era generar suspense y emoción en su público a través de las pequeñas historias que iba entregando a medida que avanzaba la película.

   Hay un vínculo bastante sublime entre estas dos épocas, 1994 y 2019. Muchas veces, ni siquiera podía distinguir qué era real y qué no. Con el tiempo se fueron aclarando, pero seguí sin saberlo durante muchos hasta el final.

   Aparte de que todo el drama parece un poco sobredimensionado, la película hizo un trabajo muy fino al contar la historia de un evento a través de las cintas grabadas. Esto se hizo sin ningún tipo de narración, pero los vídeos de las cintas cuentan todo el incidente por sí mismos. Esto es digno de elogio.

   Me gustaría pensar que el punto fuerte de la película es la narración de la historia, porque no parecía haber mucho en este aspecto.

   Esto no quiere decir que el trabajo realizado aquí fuera horrible, sino que no era particularmente impresionante.

   Pero creo que esto es lo que ocurre en muchas películas de misterio para no distraer al público de lo que les vende la película: la historia. Y para ello, es posible que la emoción tenga que ser entregada de manera sutil.

   Así que lo que tenemos es una película con un compromiso visual mínimo.

   Ver una película con actores que no son capaces de vender sus personajes con la suficiente eficacia disuadirá a los espectadores de comprometerse con la historia.

   El único actor con el que tuve una conexión fue Mamoudou Athie, que interpretó el papel principal. Sin su magnífica interpretación de su personaje, creo que la película habría tenido mucho menos éxito.

   Me gustó especialmente el hecho de que fuera capaz de hacernos entrar en la mente del personaje lo suficientemente bien como para relacionarnos con todo lo que estaba sucediendo.

   En cuanto a los demás actores de la serie, lo hicieron lo suficientemente bien como para mantener sus personajes, pero realmente no me sentí conectado a sus papeles más de lo necesario para entender la historia.

   

   𝕄𝕀𝕊 ℙ𝔼ℕ𝕊𝔸𝕄𝕀𝔼ℕ𝕋𝕆𝕊 𝔽𝕀ℕ𝔸𝕃𝔼𝕊...

   No es una serie que consideraría digna de un atracón. Es una serie que elegiría para ver en los días en los que sólo quiero ver algo para relajarme. No es una película de evasión; ni siquiera pertenece a esa categoría; más bien, es algo que me tomaría el tiempo de ver para pasar el rato.

   Pero aparentemente, la serie fue cancelada. El servicio de streaming, Netflix, no explicó por qué se canceló otra serie que iba bien en su catálogo. Si la serie se renueva, podría considerar seguirla ya que la primera parte terminó con una nota bastante intrigante.

   Yo le daría a la serie una calificación de 6/10.

   It is an American horror thriller/supernatural series that was released in 2022 on netflix.

   In summary, a vhs restorer is called to make readable a hundred VHS tapes found during a fire in a building in New York.

   Is it a good thriller that mixes mystery and found footage that can lead to a kind of multiverse? I can't say more so as not to spoil the series...

   I give it an 8 out of 10.

   En résumé, un restaurateur de vhs est appelé pour rendre lisible une centaine de cassette VHS trouvé lors d’un incendie d’un immeuble à New York.

   C’est un bon thriller qui mélange le mystère et le found footage qui peut déboucher sur un genre de multivers ? Je ne peux en dire plus pour ne pas spoiler la série…

   Je lui donne la note de 8 sur 10.

   I really love seeing Netflix financing original and promising productions because, over the years, this has resulted in many awesome series and films being created such as Dark or Ozark. Not every promising production from Netflix ends up being successful, I remember being very hyped about an Italian horror series called Curon and it wasn't good enough. This has caused me to remain cautious every time a potentially new exciting production is announced.
   
   

   When I first read about Archive 81, the idea obviously excited me but I wasn't entirely convinced if it was worth watching. However, I decided to give it a chance and started to watch the first couple of episodes and I am glad I did because this show has in my opinion, become one of the best Netflix series belonging to the mystery and suspense genre.
   
   

   One of the reasons that made me interested in the show was that it was published as a horror production. As is usually the case nowadays with many "horror" production, this series isn't actually scary and it doesn't have anything that could be considered proper horror. Maybe calling it "soft horror" would be a good way of differentiating this type of production, but in my case, I prefer to simply describe it as a series with a lot of suspense and a very intriguing mystery. Personally, I really love when those 2 genres are properly combined.

   What was the series about?

   The series is mainly about a guy called Dan Turner who works restoring mysterious old tapes with very sinister information in them. He gets hired by a massive but very private organization, and the condition for the job is that he needs to restore them while inside a massive, modern, and remote property. There is a reason for this condition that I felt was too forced, and the fact he needed to work in a very remote location turned out to be very convenient to facilitate later suspenseful events.
   
   

   Dan also has a very traumatic past and as the story advances, we will learn many things that seemed to be unrelated are actually very related to each other. As Dan begins to restore the tapes, nothing seems out of the ordinary. The tapes were filmed by a young woman in the 90s who was looking for information about her birth mother, and this made her interested in the history of a particular building where she believes her mother lived.
   
   

   This woman, Melody Pendras, is simply a normal and innocent woman who just wants to meet her birth mother for the first time which is quite common for people who were given for adoption at birth. She has no idea what is expecting her when she starts to dig deep about the history and the secrets of this building.
   
   

   As the days go on, Melody starts to notice weirder and weirder stuff from the people who live in this building. Conveniently, she films her interactions 24/7 like a modern vlogger because she is supposedly working on some type of thesis about the building.

   Realmente me encanta ver a Netflix financiando producciones originales y prometedoras porque, a lo largo de los años, esto ha resultado en la creación de muchas series y películas increíbles, como Dark u Ozark. Aunque no todas las producciones prometedoras de Netflix terminan siendo exitosas, recuerdo haber estado muy entusiasmado con una serie de terror italiana llamada Curon y no fue lo suficientemente buena. Esto me ha llevado a ser cauteloso cada vez que se anuncia una nueva producción con buen potencial.
   
   

   Cuando leí por primera vez sobre Archive 81, la idea obviamente me entusiasmó, pero no estaba completamente convencido de si valía la pena verla. Sin embargo, decidí darle una oportunidad y comencé a ver los primeros episodios y me alegro de haberlo hecho porque, en mi opinión, este programa se ha convertido en una de las mejores series de Netflix pertenecientes al género de misterio y suspenso.
   
   

   Una de las razones que me hizo interesarme en el programa fue que se publicó como una producción de terror. Como suele ser el caso hoy en día con muchas producciones de "terror", esta serie en realidad no da miedo y no tiene nada que pueda considerarse terror como tal. Tal vez llamarla "soft horror " sería una buena forma de diferenciar este tipo de producción, pero en mi caso prefiero describirla simplemente como una serie con mucho suspenso y un misterio muy intrigante. Personalmente, me encanta cuando esos 2 géneros se combinan correctamente.

   ¿De qué trataba la serie?

   La serie trata principalmente sobre un tipo llamado Dan Turner que trabaja restaurando misteriosas cintas antiguas que contienen información muy siniestra. Lo contrata una organización masiva pero muy privada, y la condición para el trabajo es que necesita restaurarlas mientras se encuentra dentro de una propiedad masiva, moderna y remota. Hay una razón para esta condición que sentí que era demasiado forzada, y el hecho de que él necesitara trabajar en un lugar muy remoto resultó ser muy conveniente para facilitar eventos de suspenso posteriores.
   
   

   Dan también tiene un pasado muy traumático y, a medida que avanza la historia, aprenderemos que muchas cosas que parecían no estar relacionadas, en realidad están muy relacionadas entre sí.    The series takes place at 2 different times, the one where Dan lives which is the current year, and the one where Melody started to live in the building, which was in 1994. The tapes she filmed have been a bit damaged, but as Dan continues to watch, it becomes apparent that there is something more to simply damage on these tapes. The tapes are not only a bit damaged, but there is something more and very creepy in them as well.
   
   

   The series has good revelations since the first episode, but naturally, things get more and more intense as Melody discovers more crazy stuff from the inhabitants of the building, and as Dan continues to watch very strange things on the tapes while also learning about the mysterious organization that hired him.
   
   

   The story has its good dose of paranormal events but these aren't necessarily scary. The ending was all right, although as I discuss a few paragraphs below, there were some things in the writing that I didn't like. However, I believe the story is good enough to justify another season, and the ending certainly leaves this possibility quite open while also providing closure to parts of the story.

   Main names associated with the series

   The main director of the series was Rebecca Thomas who directed half of the episodes. This director has been very active in the entertainment industry since the past decade, and most of her previous works have been in other series such as When the Streetlights Go On and Limetown.
   
   

   The series had 2 main writers that worked in the majority of the episodes. One of these is Helen Leigh who has previously only worked in one episode of the horror series Outcast. And the other main writer was Rebecca Sonnenshine, who has more experience and has previously worked in popular shows such as The Boys, The Crossing, and The Vampire Diaries.
   
   

   Mamoudou Athie is the actor who plays one of the main characters of the story. He works restoring old tapes and in the past, he suffered from a horrible family trauma that still affects him. We can also find this actor in the films The Circle, Black Box, Underwater, among many others.
   
   

   Dina Shihabi plays the other main character, a young woman who will accidentally get involved in crazy stuff outside of the understanding of any normal human. We can find this actress in some other series such as Altered Carbon, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, and Daredevil.

   La serie se desarrolla en 2 momentos diferentes, en el que vive Dan que es el año en curso, y en el que Melody empezó a vivir en el edificio, que fue en 1994. Las cintas que filmó han estado un poco dañadas, pero mientras Dan continúa mirando, se hace evidente que hay algo más que simplemente daños en las cintas. Las cintas no solo están un poco dañadas, sino que también hay algo más espeluznante en ellas.

Esta directora ha estado muy activa en la industria del entretenimiento desde la década pasada, y la mayoría de sus trabajos anteriores han sido en otras series como When the Streetlights Go On y Limetown.
   
   

   La serie tuvo 2 escritores principales que trabajaron en la mayoría de los episodios. Una de ellas es Helen Leigh, quien anteriormente solo trabajó en un episodio de la serie de terror Outcast. Y la otra escritora principal fue Rebecca Sonnenshine, quien tiene más experiencia y trabajó anteriormente en programas populares como The Boys, The Crossing y The Vampire Diaries.
   
   

   Mamoudou Athie es el actor que interpreta a uno de los personajes principales de la historia. Trabaja restaurando cintas antiguas y en el pasado sufrió un horrible trauma familiar que aún lo afecta. También podemos encontrar a este actor en las películas The Circle, Black Box, Underwater, entre muchas otras.

   How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the writing?

   I think the cast did a good job in their roles for the most part. Although the character played by the actress Dina Shihabi made me think towards the end of the season she was addicted to difficulties and complications. This, however, isn't a problem caused by the actress but by the writers.
   
   

   I believe that when the season was reaching its end the writers committed several mistakes, the worst of them being related to an inexplicable decision that puts a person in danger. Imagine you find yourself in a hostile environment and instead of escaping you for some reason decide to stay and see what happens. This doesn't make sense, any normal person is primitively driven by a self-preservation instinct, and the writers of this story might have forgotten that when deciding how to figure out some of the final events.
   
   

   Apart from that, the rest of the story was very enjoyable with a great balance of mystery and suspense. The story isn't entirely original or groundbreaking though, since it is clearly inspired by some previous productions such as The Ring, which clearly inspired a very short and cool scene, and Sinister, which probably inspired some dark dynamics using old and weird tapes.
   
   

   The scenery of the story was well done, although the excuse to use these settings was another example of a weak work from the writers once again. I am referring to the scenery used with the character that restores old tapes. The reasons to use that scenery felt too forced for me.

   Final thoughts

   Archive 81 isn't a perfect series nor a masterpiece, but it was a perfectly enjoyable mystery-suspense story, that will certainly leave fans of those genres very satisfied. It leaves the possibility of a new season down the road, and that could probably be enjoyable as well. Although the mystery has already been explained, it would be difficult to generate the same feelings of intrigue in the viewers if a new season is produced.
   
   

   I consider this series a good success for Netflix, and really think most people should give it a watch. Let's not forget the series isn't really scary so people who dread real horror shouldn't ignore it.

   ¿Cómo estuvieron la actuación del elenco, el escenario y la escritura?

   Creo que el elenco hizo un buen trabajo con sus papeles en su mayor parte. Aunque el personaje interpretado por la actriz Dina Shihabi me hizo pensar que hacia el final de la temporada era adicta a las dificultades y complicaciones. Esto, sin embargo, no es un problema causado por la actriz sino por los escritores.
   
   

   Creo que cuando la temporada llegaba a su fin los guionistas cometieron varios errores, el peor de ellos relacionado con una decisión inexplicable que pone en peligro a una persona. Imagina que te encuentras en un entorno hostil y en lugar de escaparte por algún motivo decides quedarte y ver qué pasa.    La escenografía de la historia estuvo bien hecha, aunque la excusa para usar estos escenarios fue otro ejemplo de un trabajo débil de los escritores una vez más.    Archive 81 no es una serie perfecta ni una obra maestra, pero fue una historia de misterio y suspenso perfectamente disfrutable, que sin duda dejará muy satisfechos a los fanáticos de esos géneros. Deja la posibilidad de una nueva temporada en el futuro, y eso probablemente también podría ser disfrutable. Aunque como ya se ha explicado el misterio, sería difícil generar los mismos sentimientos de intriga en los espectadores si se produce una nueva temporada.
   
   

   Considero que esta serie es un buen éxito para Netflix, y realmente creo que la mayoría de la gente debería echarle un vistazo. No olvidemos que la serie no es realmente aterradora, por lo que las personas que no disfrutan del horror real no deberían ignorarla.

   Archive 81 is a horror show that is currently airing on Netflix. I know that you think that you've had enough of the found footage subgenre of horror, but this show does something special with it. Mostly because we know it is found footage, but we don’t see it in that format. So we don't have a lot of shaky camera. It is so well made that you'll forget that you were ever tired of found footage. The show is pretty brilliant and very unpredictable. It also means you either going to love the ending or hate it. But I loved it.

   James Wan is a producer on this show, so that explains why I love it so much. I usually prefer him as a director and not a producer, but TV is different than movies I guess because this show nailed it in my opinion. I loved it and can't wait for a second season of this show. Even though technically this season has a clear ending, but I want more of this world and these characters.

   The show follows Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie). Turner has an unusual job. He restores damaged cassette and converts them into digital formats. He works in a museum of images which is perfect for him, but this is also his hobby and something that he does in his spare time. He loves old stuff. His best friend is Mark Higgins (Matt McGorry) has his own mystery podcast and a very rich father who pays for everything. They seem like really good friends.

   One day, Turner gets a strange job offer. He is asked to restore a collection of old cassettes that were recently acquired that were saved from a fire. The fire happened in an apartment building in New York called the Visser building. Since the tapes are extremely damaged, he must do the work in a remote facility all by himself. A person in isolated location looking at things that were saved from a fire is a bit cliché, but it is very well made. There are some troops in this show, but it doesn't damage how good it really is.

   On the tapes we see Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) who is investigating the Visser building and those who live in it. Yes, the same Visser we know will burn down. Her investigation takes place in the 90s. In order to investigate the building she moves in to it. The building and the residents in it are very odd and strange things start to occur. It is all somehow connected to the present as well. And it is all fascinating and totally unpredictable.

   The show is a slow burner, but that is the best kind of horror. The mystery builds slowly and we get to know the characters and get attached to them. The built up and the atmosphere are perfect on both timelines, but each of them feels completely unique. We slowly wonder what the hell is going on and get it totally wrong. Even though there are some troop and cliché from the horror genre, there aren't too many. It all works together perfectly. The script is great. Some very good dialogue plus I love the themes in the show. Both supernatural and human. The acting is also great. Athie and Shihabi are just great. They can totally hold their own. Especially Athie who spends so much time on screen by himself and he just does an amazing job with what he is given. It is just really well made horror.

   If you're a horror fan than this show is a must see. It is just brilliant. It has some clichés and troops, but it is so well made that it makes up for it.

   Archive 81 is a series that had an idea for itself and was consistent most of the time in what it wants to convey, but the finale leaves you a little unsatisfied. Netflix has been trying to create suspenseful films lately but the finale is clearly where they slip between the bars.

   The series tells the story of a young boy who archives various tapes bought and given to a film museum. But one day he gets a strange proposal, where he will have to spend all the time in an abandoned place and archive tapes that were obtained in a mysterious fire. Dan of course accedes to the proposal. When he manages to reconstruct the first tape he meets a young girl on it and it is her story that Dan will have to solve, though it will be on the verge of madness. The girl will be interviewed at the hotel, because she will want to have material for her studies, but the truth is deeper, and her appearance there is very necessary. As Dan watches more footage, he will not only get to know the girl from 1993 but also try to discover how the fire happened. While at first everything goes according to plan, the further they go the weirder things get, and each tape becomes more and more on the verge of insanity.

   You know me well and you know that I like cinema connected with VHS tapes. Horror always looks best on old tapes. And so it is with Archive 81. The series is a tribute to the famous works that shone in the world of VHS.

   We have here more or less subtle references to such works as: The Shining, Rosmere's Baby, Candyman, Dracula, Manos, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligaria, and many others that I have forgotten the titles of.

   Most of the films are horror classics, although Manos is the worst film in the history of American pop culture, and yet it subtly has a reference in this film. Some of the references are very subtle, such as the music or certain behaviors of the characters, and others are just a bit of a mockery of conventions.

   Unfortunately, the finale spoils the idea a little bit, because the creators forcefully made an opening for the second season in order to develop the story even further. The 7 episodes are interesting and you can watch them with bated breath, but when we get to the finale we feel emptiness because it is not satisfying enough.

   Of course some people may not like the plot which plays an important role here, but I think it was well done (except for the finale) and the characters managed to get out of it quite well. Even though it is a horror film, there are no jump scares, but there are some stuffy locations, flickering VHS tapes and the atmosphere is hypnotic. The creators wanted to create an interesting story paying homage to the VHS era, while adding an interesting plot of their own, and it came out well, though without a finale.

   If the series had ended differently, most would have complained that it was an old horror movie trick, but the last scene spoils the idea of creating foundations for the next season, which spoils the darkness scheme.

   Nevertheless, it is a very good series for people who will catch minor or major film traits and at the same time will enjoy die interesting plot where everything is based on the film stock. 7/10

   Archiwum 81 to serial, który miał na siebie pomysł i był przez większość czasu konsekwentny w tym co chce przekazać, jednak finał pozostawia pewien niedosyt. Netflix w ostatnim czasie stara się kreować filmy pełne napięcia jednak finały im ewidentnie gdzie wymykają się między kraty.

   Serial opowiada i młodym chłopaku, który archiwizuje różne taśmy kupione i daje do muzeum filmowego. Jednak pewnego dnia dostaje dziwna propozycje, gdzie będzie musiał spędzić cały czas w opuszczonym miejscu i archiwizować taśmy jakie udało się uzyskać w tajemniczym pożarze. Dan oczywiście przystoi na propozycje. Kiedy udaje mu się zrekonstruować pierwsza taśmę poznaje na niej młoda dziewczynę i to jej opowieść Dan będzie musiał rozwiązać choć będzie to wręcz na granicy szaleństwa. Dziewczyna będzie robić wywiady w hotelu, gdyż będzie chciała mieć materiał na studia, jednak prawda jest głębsza, a jej pojawienie się tam jest bardzo potrzebne. Dan oglądając kolejne materiały nie tylko pozna dziewczynę z 1993 ale i będzie próbować odkryć jak doszło do pożaru. O ile początkowo wszystko pójdzie zgodnie z planem tak im dalej tym będzie coraz dziwniej, a każda taśma będzie coraz bardziej na pograniczu obłędu.

   Dobrze mnie znacie i wiecie, ze lubię kino związane z taśmami VHS. Groza zawsze najlepiej wyglada na wysłużonych taśmach. Tak jest podobnie w Archiwum 81 Serial jest ukłonem dla znanych dzieł, które zabłysnęły w świecie VHS.

   Mamy tutaj nawiązania większa bądź mniej subtelne takich dzieł jak: Lśnienie, Dziecko Rosmery, Candyman, Dracula, Manos, Gabinet Doktora Caligarii, wiele innych których akurat tytuły zapomniałem.

   Większość filmów to klasyki grozy choć Manos to najgorszy film w dziejach amerykańskiej popkultury, a mimo to subtelnie ma nawiązanie w tym filmie. Niektóre z nawiązań są bardzo delikatne jak np muzyka czy pewne zachowania bohaterów inne wręcz troszkę wyśmiewają konwencje.

   Finał niestety psuje troszkę zamysł, gdyż twórcy na sile zrobili sobie furtkę na drugi sezon, by moc jeszcze bardziej rozwinąć historie. 7 odcinków jest ciekawie zrealizowanych i ogląda się z zapartym tchem, jednak kiedy dostajemy finał opowieści odczujemy pustkę, gdyż jest mało satysfakcjonujący.

   Oczywiście może niektórym nie spodobać się wątek jaki tutaj odgryza ważna role, jednak uważam, ze został dobrze rozegrany (nie liczac finału) i bohaterowie wybrnęli z tego całkiem dobrze. Po mimo, ze to horror nie ma tutaj typowych zagrań jak jumpscare, są natomiast duszne lokacje i migoczące kasety VHS oraz klimat który wręcz hipnotyzuje widza. Twórcy chcieli stworzyć ciekawa opowieść oddając hołd erze VHS, a przy tym dodając ciekawa fabule od siebie i wyszło to sprawnie choć bez finału.

   Jeśli serial by się skończył inaczej większość by narzekała, ze to stara zagrywka horrorów, tutaj starano się brnąc do końca w to, jednak ostatnia scena trochę psuje zamysł tworząc podwaliny pod sezon kolejny przez co został popsuty schemat mroku.

   Niemniej jest to bardzo dobry serial dla ludzi, którzy wyłapią mniejsze bądź większe smaczki filmowe, a przy tym będą cieszyć sie ciekawa fabuła gdzie wszystko opiera się o taśmy filmowe. 7/10

   Por acá siempre estamos buscando esas joyas que están por ahí escondidas y que no están haciendo tanto ruido como deberían, tal es el caso de Archivo 81, una de las mejores series que he podido ver últimamente, desde ya lo digo. Esta serie fue estrenada a mediados del mes Enero de este 2022 por lo que es posible que muchos por acá no hayan tenido la oportunidad de verla todavía, en lo personal me sorprendió bastante pero siempre en el mejor de los sentidos.

   Around here we are always looking for those hidden gems that are not making as much noise as they should, such is the case of Archivo 81, one of the best series I've been able to see lately, I'll say that right now. This series was released in mid-January of this year 2022 so it is possible that many around here have not had the opportunity to see it yet, personally I was quite surprised but always in the best sense.

   Pero, por que, que la hace tan especial? - creo que es un poco la vibra que genera al verla, si son de los que les gustó DARK estoy seguro que esta llenará sus expectativas ya que tiene un poco esa sensación de misterio, del no saber y entender absolutamente nada de lo que está pasando, tiene sus buenas cuotas de buen terror y por supuesto un suspenso psicológico que te mantiene al vilo SIEMPRE, nunca te vas a sentir cómodo viéndola. Así que habiendo dicho esto, hablemos un poco de que va esta buena serie.

   But, why, what makes it so special? - I think it's a little bit the vibe it generates when you watch it, if you like DARK I'm sure this one will fulfill your expectations since it has a little bit of that mystery feeling, of not knowing and understanding absolutely nothing of what is happening, it has its fair share of good horror and of course a psychological suspense that keeps you in suspense ALWAYS, you will never feel comfortable watching it. So having said that, let's talk a little bit about what this good series is about.

   La historia empieza con Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), un archivista y restaurador de cintas y material audiovisual quien es contratado para, como dije, restaure unos videos de una joven cineasta Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) quien en su momento estaba haciendo un trabajo de investigación en un viejo edificio en Nueva York. La cosa se comienza a poner un poco turbia y extraña cuando de la nada y sin quererlo empiezan a salir ciertas señales de un culto demoniaco que hace vida en dicho edificio y en el que inevitablemente terminan involucrados nuestros dos protagonistas.

   The story begins with Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), an archivist and restorer of tapes and audiovisual material who is hired to, as I said, restore some videos of a young filmmaker Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) who at the time was doing research work in an old building in New York. Things start to get a bit murky and strange when out of nowhere and unintentionally begin to come out certain signs of a demonic cult that makes life in that building and in which inevitably end up involving our two protagonists.

   Desde el principio sabes que algo raro está pasando pero es muy complicado dar con ello porque la misma trama de la serie así lo quiere, busca que te hagas preguntas, que cuestiones todo pero sobretodo que todas esas dudas te mantengan pegado frente a la pantalla por el grado de intriga y suspenso que generan. Por eso la comparaba un poco con DARK, porque esa vibra de que cada vez que termina un episodio quedas más sorprendido y con más preguntas es algo que sucede con los ocho capítulos de la serie.

   From the beginning you know that something strange is happening but it is very complicated to find it because the plot of the series wants it that way, it wants you to ask questions, to question everything but above all that all those doubts keep you glued in front of the screen by the degree of intrigue and suspense that they generate. That's why I compared it a bit with DARK, because that vibe that every time an episode ends you are more surprised and with more questions is something that happens with the eight chapters of the series.

   Es tan "extraña" esta serie que por momentos no sabes a que te estás enfrentando, si a fuerzas paranormales, alienígenas, alucinaciones y trastornos mentales, dimensiones desconocidas o hasta la misma imaginación; todas esas posibilidades están sobre la mesa y es trabajo de uno el espectador ir descifrando que puede ser y que no. Un trabajo, por ponerle un termino, que me gustó bastante porque el nivel de enganche que tuve con esta serie fue grande.

   This series is so "strange" that at times you don't know what you're dealing with, whether it's paranormal forces, aliens, hallucinations and mental disorders, unknown dimensions or even the imagination itself; all these possibilities are on the table and it's the viewer's job to decipher what it could be and what it could not be. A job, to put a term, that I liked a lot because the level of engagement I had with this series was great.

   Una de las cosas que hacen de esta serie bastante interesante es que está narrada en dos líneas del tiempo, la de Dan y la de Melody y eso al final hace que la atención y la tensión nunca se pierda porque siempre está sucediendo algo. Es decir, la trama no se hace tan lineal sino que de vez en cuando pega un salto y te vuelves a empapar de la otra historia y de todo lo que en ella está pasando.

   One of the things that make this series quite interesting is that it is narrated in two timelines, Dan's and Melody's, and that in the end makes the attention and tension is never lost because something is always happening. That is to say, the plot is not so linear but from time to time it jumps and you get soaked again in the other story and everything that is happening in it.

   Tengo que decir que el ambiente es muy denso y pesado, es impresionante como siempre existe esa intriga de no confiar en lo que te rodea y esa sensación se traspasa de la pantalla y nos llega al punto de que a veces la podemos llegar a pasar un poco mal, es muy incomoda pero en el buen sentido, OJO. Estas tramas llenas de misticismo me gustan mucho porque el saber que hay un culto secreto es algo que a todos nos despierta la curiosidad, incluso en la vida real, por lo que cada vez que se hacía alusión a eso en la serie era algo que se disfruta mucho.

   I have to say that the atmosphere is very dense and heavy, it is impressive how there is always that intrigue of not trusting what surrounds you and that feeling is transferred from the screen and reaches the point that sometimes we can get to spend a little bad, it is very uncomfortable but in a good way, EYE. These plots full of mysticism I like a lot because knowing that there is a secret cult is something that makes us all curious, even in real life, so every time that allusion was made to that in the series was something that is very enjoyable.

   En cuanto a los personajes la verdad no tengo mucho que decir, pero saben por que? - porque el gran peso en esta serie es la historia y todo lo que hay detrás de ella. Y si, tanto Mamoudou Athie como Dina hicieron unas buenas actuaciones, donde había que ponerle empeño lo pusieron, creo que más ella que él pero eso al final eso no importa tanto porque repito, lo increíble y "novedoso" de esta serie es el concepto. Siempre es necesario acompañar una buena historia con unas actuaciones decentes y sin duda esto es un gran ejemplo.

   As for the characters, I really don't have much to say, but you know why? - Because the great weight in this series is the story and everything behind it. And yes, both Mamoudou Athie and Dina gave good performances, where they had to put effort they did, I think more her than him but that in the end it doesn't matter so much because I repeat, the incredible and "new" of this series is the concept.    Entonces, que te vas a encontrar si decides ver esta serie? - una muy buena historia que engloba muchos fenómenos desconocidos, buenas escenas de terror (cosa que no me esperaba), el latente suspenso psicológico que no puede faltar y el famoso "cliffhanger" al final de cada capítulo; esto último creo que es de lo más característico en esta serie, la tensión con la que terminas después del episodio es gigantesca.

   So, what are you going to find if you decide to watch this series? - A very good story that encompasses many unknown phenomena, good horror scenes (which I did not expect), the latent psychological suspense that can not miss and the famous "cliffhanger" at the end of each chapter; the latter I think is the most characteristic in this series, the tension with which you end up after the episode is gigantic.

   En fin, a esta gran serie y grata sorpresa le doy un 9.5/10 porque creo que es de lo mejor que he visto del genero en los últimos meses/años y por tanto animo a todos los amantes del terror y del suspenso que la vean sin perder más el tiempo. La pueden encontrar en Netflix y consta de 8 episodios de una hora aproximadamente de duración. Segunda temporada? - es pronto para saberlo pero según su creadora es muy posible que se de. Aquí el tráiler para que se deleiten de esta excelente historia.

   Anyway, I give this great series and pleasant surprise a 9.5/10 because I think it is one of the best I've seen in the genre in recent months / years and therefore I encourage all lovers of horror and suspense to watch it without wasting any more time. You can find it on Netflix and it consists of 8 episodes of about an hour long. Second season? - It is too early to tell but according to its creator it is very possible that it will happen.    Il s'agit d'une série américaine, composée de 8 épisodes, arrivée mi-janvier sur Netflix, adaptée non pas d'un livre ou d'une BD, mais de podcasts.

   On est dans le genre "suspense", avec un léger penchant du côté "épouvante".

   En 1994, Melody Pendras fait un reportage-vidéo dans l'immeuble Visser, à New-York, où sa mère, Julia Bennett, aurait résidé, puisque ce serait sa dernière adresse connue. Melody a été élevée par l'Eglise depuis tout bébé, abandonnée par sa mère.

   De nos jours, en 2019, un chef d'entreprise, Virgil Davenport, fait appel aux services d'un expert en restauration de cassettes audio et vidéo, Dan Turner. Mr Davenport promet une récompense de 100 mille dollars à Dan, quand il aura tout restauré et il met une résidence à sa disposition, avec tout le matériel nécessaire pour y arriver, c'est un endroit isolé dans un domaine privé, entouré d'une petite forêt et d'un haut grillage. Tout est fait pour qu'il puisse se concentrer sur sa tâche, mais qu'il puisse aussi s'aérer l'esprit. Il y a de la nourriture en suffisance, il y a une tv, des livres, un téléphone fixe (l'internet ne passerait pas et la téléphonie mobile non plus) et il dispose même d'un système d'appel d'urgence. Au fil des jours, il se rend compte qu'il n'est pas dans une simple résidence de chef d'entreprise. Mr Davenport lui avait dit que c'était un endroit où on examinait des enregistrements, mais que c'était un peu laissé à l'abandon. Etrangement, dès qu'il essayait d'ouvrir une porte fermée à clé, il était contacté par téléphone ou par une dame qui venait vérifier si tout allait bien. Dan en a donc conclu qu'il était espionné par les différentes caméras installées à divers endroits, et qu'elles étaient en état de fonctionnement. Au fur et à mesure de la restauration des cassettes et du visionnage de celles-ci, certaines choses qu'il y a vues l'ont intrigué car il était indirectement lié à ce qu'il y voyait. Dan est resté en contact avec son ami Marc, via son téléphone portable, en allant se promener à la limite du domaine pour capter le réseau. Ce contact lui permet d'obtenir des infos extérieures, mais aussi de se changer un peu les idées.

   Sur les cassettes, on trouve les différents reportages-vidéos que Melody a effectué au Visser, avec les interviews de plusieurs résidents de l'immeuble. Ces personnes sont bizarres, par leur comportement surtout. Très peu d'entre elles ont survécu à l'incendie du Visser, en 1994, et c'est cet incendie qui a endommagé les cassettes. Le corps de Melody n'a jamais été retrouvé, mais elle a pourtant disparu à ce moment-là et elle se trouvait bien dans l'immeuble au moment de l'incendie. Dan est convaincu qu'elle est toujours en vie, en se basant sur ce qu'il a vu sur les enregistrements, mais en se basant aussi sur ce qu'il a vécu pendant son travail de restauration.

   C'est très spécial comme série, à la fin de l'histoire, une "porte" se referme, mais j'ai tendance à penser qu'une autre porte s'ouvre sur une suite possible. C'est à Netflix de décider si saison 2 il y aura ou pas.

   Pour ceux qui ont déjà vu la série ou comptent la regarder, je ne parviens pas à reconnaître la langue utilisée lors du rituel et je ne trouve aucune information à ce sujet sur internet. Avez-vous réussi à identifier cette langue (ancienne ?) ? Selon moi, elle ressemble à de l'elfique (langue inventée pour Le Seigneur des Anneaux) ou à une langue d'origine scandinave.

   Cette série est tellement spéciale que je ne parviens pas non plus à déterminer si j'ai aimé ou non. Je suis dans l'entre-deux.
