  1. Beforeigners Season 1 (7.5/10) - Norwegian series where Vikings from ancient times suddenly arrive in the present.@dedicatedguy1950d

I recently began to watch this interesting Norwegian series from HBO and it was well worth the watch. The premise of the film is that suddenly, in the present, flashes of lights begin to appear in the sea, and seconds later people from different times are found in the water. Some of them deads, the majority are rescued while still alive.

The series reminded me of another one named The Crossing, where people also appeared out of nowhere, but instead of coming from the past, they were coming from the future. Some of them with evil plans for the present. In Beforeigners, there seems to be a conspiracy or something hidden going on, but the first season doesn't show much about this. There are glimpses about something bigger in scope.

The main characters are going to be 2 members of the police force. One is a regular officer and his partner is going to be a female warrior from centuries ago, specifically from the Viking era. Not all of the visitors from previous eras are civilized by the way. There are some that have been unable to adapt themselves to modern life and live as outcasts.

These 2 police officers will work together to investigate certain crimes related to visitors from other eras. They will slowly uncover a crime gang that is taking advantage of vulnerable visitors, and try to bring some justice but what frustrated me a little bit, was that the main topic of the series, which is clearly the sudden appearance of people from other ages, haven't been solved yet or at least properly explored.

With the exception of the first scene, the series' events take place almost 20 years after the first visitor appeared in the sea. And in all that time, nobody has still figured out why and how this is happening. People are still arriving after so many years and modern society has simply regarded this as an inexplicable and unavoidable phenomenon. Everything else continues as normal.

By the end of the season, there seemed to be some major macro movements in the plot beginning to take place, but after only 6 episodes I felt the story could have provided so much more. There obviously needs to be a second season, and the first one should have been longer and encompassing a more complex series of events.

I still recommend this series, especially if you have enjoyed The Crossing, or another series called Equinox, but maybe it would be better to wait for season 2 to be released and binge-watch them. This isn't a masterpiece like Dark or The Leftovers but it is a great second-tier series.

    The best

    • Entertaining scifi series with a promising season 2.
    • Original and intriguing plot.

    The worst

    • Too short. It should have had more episodes.
