1. ›Brooklyn 99 is so good I'm watching it a second time@netflixr1113d

   Before my Netflix account gets suspended I am trying to get as much out of it as I can before that date comes. As I wrote in my last post, Netflix is going to be attempting to phase out account sharing globally, starting in the first half of 2023. Some people have already noticed the effects of this as we are just in the phase where they try to inconvenience people into getting their own account instead of using someone else's. I think the plan is going to backfire big time because i am actually a big fan of Netflix, but I will not get my own account if they eliminate account sharing, especially since it was their idea and actually a marketing tactic of theirs in the first place.

   Now, let's carry on to what I think is one of the best sitcoms ever made and one of the few that I have willingly sat through multiple times.

   Cop comedy series have been done before but I think that Brooklyn 99 does it the best. Because of the fact that the show doesn't follow a traditional format, skips back and forth in time, and each episode is only loosely related to the ones that came before, make it a very easy show to simply jump into at any point. You don't need to have watched season 1-4 to understand season 5.

   Not long ago I finished the last episodes of the final season of B99 and I was kind of disappointed that they decided to not make it anymore.

   I don't know what the studio conditions are that are taken into account when deciding whether or not to continue making a show. But having nearly 3 million live watchers of a show in 2019 and 2020, a time when streaming had basically already taken over the entire industry, is a pretty damn good number in my mind. It could be a question of cast salaries, or the fact that the cast and crew were kind of burned out. It's not like the storyline was ever going to come to a conclusion, because there really isn't one. The scenarios they run into from episode to episode are rarely something that runs on for more than a single episode, and they simply create new crimes to solve and have guest characters come in for cameos.

   Another thing I really enjoy about this show is that they don't have a laugh track. I also enjoy that it has a delightful mix of comedy, some action, but also emotional aspects of the show. In many ways I feel as though it is kind of like Scrubs but less emotional and of course, about police instead of doctors. Scrubs went down a similar path, but unlike B99 a big part of the reason why they eventually hung it up was because key characters in the show decided to leave the show, and the audience just didn't like the replacements. This has not been the case with Brooklyn 99. The only character that ever left the show was "Gina" (played by Chelsea Peretti) and she left the show to go off an selfishly have a baby. She would later return to the show in glorious fashion.

   The reason why I started watching the series again was because a friend was visiting and she is one of those rare people that had heard of Brooklyn 99 but never actually watched it. She immediately loved it. I also enjoyed starting at season 1 episode 1 because it had at that point been a very long time since I had seen the episodes, and a lot of the stuff was actually kind of new to me because i had forgotten.

   All the characters have their own individual quirks and the overall comedy depends on their ability to work opposite one another. The main character is undeniably Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) but the focus shifts from episode to episode and there is even one or two episodes in there where Jake is barely involved.

   I particularly like the episodes where Jake and Rosa are forced to work together because they are polar opposites. Jake is friendly and silly, and Rosa is stern, hot-headed, and rather emotionless. You would already know this if you are familiar with the show though.

   The point of all of this is that there are very few shows out there that I am willing to watch multiple times and just off the top of my head these would be Brooklyn 99, Scrubs, Friends, Seinfeld, and maybe Modern Family. This is just the comedy side of things though, if I were to extend this to dramas the list would be a lot longer.

Of which I'm sure you've heard a lot not only for its great success in several countries but also for the particularities that make it really entertaining throughout its eight seasons. So today I'll leave you with six reasons why it's worth watching Brooklyn 99 Let's start with that count!

De la cual segura habrán oído hablar bastante no solamente por su gran éxito en varios países sino por las particularidades que la hacen realmente entretenida a la largo de ocho temporadas.    An ideal setting:

   As you may know, Brooklyn 99 takes place in a New York police precinct, the same one answers to the number 99 and where a group of seven cops and the team captain are in charge of solving several police cases. Unlike other comedies where situations are set in a specific environment such as 'The Office' (an office) or 'Friends' (cafeteria or residence of the characters), the police comedy genre is quite different in Brooklyn 99 by allowing personal and work situations to be involved in a dynamic and changing way. They can spend a full day at the precinct and still find a way to add depth to a theme and a good dose of humor. Just as in other opportunities we will see them in other settings and retaining their geniality. The point is, the characters are what make the moment, not the venue itself.

   Un ambiente en escena ideal:

   Cómo sabrán, Brooklyn 99 transcurre en un recinto policial de Nueva York, el mismo responde al número 99 y dónde un grupo de siete policías y el capitán del equipo se encargan de resolver varios casos policiales. A diferencia de otras comedias dónde las situaciones se viven en un ambiente en específico como 'The Office' (una oficina) o 'Friends'(cafetería o residencias de los personajes), el género de comedia policial es bastante diferente en Brooklyn 99 al permitir involucrar situaciones personales y laborales de una forma dinámica y cambiante. Pueden pasar un dia completo en el recinto y aún así buscarán la forma de añadir profundidad en un tema y su buena dosis de humor. Así como en otras oportunidades los veremos en otros escenarios y conservando su genialidad. El punto es que, los personajes son los que hacen el momento, no el lugar en sí.

   Colorful characters:

   Well, I think in every series or movie we will find unforgettable and wonderful characters. They all have them. But in Brooklyn 99 it is particularly interesting to find characters that are very authentic and that adapt to the tone of the comedy without getting out of the personality of the character. In the series we have cops like Boyle, a naive, sweet and kind man but when it comes to tackling a case he is an excellent cop. We have Rosa as the bad girl but assertive in her work, Amy as the good girl in search of approval, Peralta as the joker but very effective as a cop, Gina as the secretary with great self-confidence, Terry as the right one and who straightens everyone out, Holt as the captain with a serious countenance and loved by all his colleagues and Scully and Hitchcock, the two "good-for-nothings". They all play a bit of comedy but ultimately stick to the seriousness of being a police officer. Which is great because it toes the fine line between humor and the seriousness that comes with working in a police precinct. Which is ultimately what you would expect to see in a series with the title of police affairs.

   Bueno, creo que en toda serie o película encontraremos personajes inolvidables y maravillosos. Todos lo tienen. Pero en Brooklyn 99 es particularmente interesante encontrar personajes muy autenticos y que se adaptan al tono de comedia sin salir de la personalidad del mismo. En la serie tenemos a policías como Boyle, un hombre ingenuo, dulce y bondadoso pero qué a la hora de abordar un caso es un excelente policía. Tenemos a Rosa como la chica mala pero asertiva en su trabajo, Amy como la chica buena en búsqueda de aprobación, Peralta como el bromista pero muy efectivo como policía, Gina como la secretaria con gran confianza en si misma, Terry cómo el correcto y quién endereza a todos, Holt como el capitán de semblante serio y querido por todos sus compañeros y Scully y Hitchcock, los dos "buenos para nada". Todos juegan un poco a la comedia pero finalmente se mantienen apegados a la seriedad de ser un agente de policía. Lo cual es magnífico porque se mantiene en la delgada línea entre el humor y la seriedad que conlleva trabajar en un recinto policial.    Season Specials:

   Just as the Simpsons have their Halloween specials with "The Little House of Horror," Brooklyn 99 brings its own with a few specials each season that make it transcendent. One of those specials is the Halloween special where the characters compete for who gets a special item before midnight. Another one of those events is Thanksgiving and Christmas. But the one that definitely takes the prize of these special events is "The Pontiac Thief", with the integration of the character Doug Judy, a car thief and archenemy of Jake Peralta, who in each season makes his play of the cop and the mouse. The guy is charismatic to a fault. Anyway, these special events make you want to look forward to the next season.

   Así como los Simpsons tienen sus especiales de Halloween con "La Casita del Horror", Brooklyn 99 se trae de las suyas con unos cuantos especiales en cada temporada que lo vuelven transcendental. Uno de esos especiales es el de Halloween donde los personajes compiten por quién obtiene antes de la media noche un objeto en especial. Otro de esos eventos es el de El día de Acción de Gracias y el de Navidad. Pero el que definitivamente se lleva el premio de estos eventos especiales es el de "El ladrón de Pontiac", con la integración del personaje Doug Judy, un ladrón de autos y archienemigo de Jake Peralta, que en cada temporada hace su jugada del policía y el ratón. El tipo es carismático a más no poder. En fin, estos eventos especiales te hacen querer esperar la siguiente temporada con ansiedad.

   Die Hard

   There's nothing like a good nod to famous series and movies that turn certain scenes into comedic gems. This happens in some dialogue between characters and particular scenes like episode 10 of season three where Jake, Boyle and Gina are seen in the middle of a gift store hijacking. To put in context, this would make more sense if we know that Jake is a die-hard fan of the Die Hard movie series and being in a situation like this is almost a dream come true for him. Saying the phrase Yippie Kayak, would be an accomplishment. Plus, the guy got interested in a career in law enforcement because of this movie. There are a couple of other nods that are just fantastic.

   Duro de Matar

   No hay nada como un buen guiño a series y películas famosas que vuelven ciertas escenas una joya en comedia. Esto ocurre en algunos diálogos entre los personajes y escenas particulares como el capítulo 10 de la tercera temporada dónde Jake, Boyle y Gina se ven en medio de un secuestro de una tienda de regalos. Para poner en contexto, esto tendría más sentido si sabemos que Jake es un fanático empedernido por la serie de películas Duro de Matar y estar en una situación así es casi un sueño hecho realidad para él. Decir la frase Yippie Kayak, sería un logro. Además, el tipo se interesó en la carrera policial por esta película. Hay un par de guiños más que son sencillamente fantásticos.

   Iconic stars

   This series sure had a knack for casting several famous actors for special appearances within some episodes. Such as Adam Sandler in one of the first episodes of the series. Bill Hader as the captain for a day, Zooey Deschanel as the girl at risk, Ed Helms as the mail man and others. One of my favorite appearances is where Gina needs to learn about astronomy and who tries to give her some lessons on it is Neil DeGrasse Tyson himself. These parts are refreshing and fit the series very well.

   Esta serie si que tuvo una buena puntería para seleccionar a varios actores famosos para apariciones especiales dentro de algunos capítulos. Tal y como la de Adam Sandler en el uno de los primeros capítulos de la serie. Bill Hader como capitán por un día, Zooey Deschanel como la chica en riesgo, Ed Helms el hombre del correo y otros más. Uno de mis apariciones favoritas es donde Gina necesita aprender sobre astronomía y quién intenta darle algunas clases sobre ello es el mismísimo Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Estás particiones son refrescantes y se adaptan muy bien a la serie.

   Length and Balance

   Something that pleases quite a lot of the series is that the duration of each chapter is only half an hour and that is a great point in favor because it lasts just as long as necessary. It doesn't tire the viewer. So that allows you to want to watch more new episodes (all different except for some that need a sequel) without having in mind that they will last a full hour solving a single case. That would make it lose its charm and its motto: quick witted humor, cops in trouble and a decent closure. We don't ask for more, just good entertainment without unnecessarily dragging out the issues. It would be stilted. Besides, that leads to a balance between humor and seriousness that can be very well narrated in a time of 30 minutes. Every minute counts.

   Duración y Equilibrio

   Algo que agrada bastante de la serie es que la duración de cada capítulo es solo de una media hora y eso es un gran punto a favor pues dura justo lo necesario. No cansa al espectador. Por lo que eso permite que quieras ver más episodios nuevos (todos diferentes a excepción de algunos que necesitan de una secuela) sin tener en mente que durarán una hora completa resolviendo un solo caso. Eso haría que perdiera el encanto y su lema: humor rápido e ingenioso, policías en problemas y un cierre decente. No pedimos más, solo entretenimiento del bueno sin alargar mucho e innecesariamente los asuntos. Resultaría rebuscado. Además eso conlleva a que exista un equilibrio entre humor y la seriedad que pueden ser muy bien narradas en un tiempo de 30 minutos. Cada minuto cuenta.

   Finally my friends, at this point I must say that for all of the above reasons and a few more that I hope you will discover for yourselves, Brooklyn 99 is one of the best cop comedy series you will find today. Don't be fooled, in some moments it may seem that the situations are absurd and the jokes somewhat naive but as much as you may not believe it, it will make you get a few laughs and hook you to it until the end. Again and again, if you're looking to laugh, watch cops work and deal with their own personal conflicts without leaving the humor behind, Brooklyn 99 is all you're looking for.    I have always been fascinated by the simple existence of a sitcom with such a particular premise as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the story of a humble NYPD precinct that knew how to intelligently mix comedy with a rather noisy satire of police series such as The Law And Order, resulting in an interesting product that progressively served as a gateway to address various "sensitive" issues with impressive agility.

   

   From its timid beginnings, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a series that was never afraid to recognize the reality within which it exists, including in its thematic elements all the social problems that characterized our last decade (especially the North American territory): racism, homophobia, machismo and the systemic failures that abound in the American security forces, problems that are especially prominent in this last season.

   I'd be lying if I didn't tell you that it's one of my favorite aspects of the entire series created by Michael Schur and Dan Goor in September 2013, capable of tackling everything with undeniable skill without falling into the vulgar or exaggerated, even if it were a field mined where its writers almost always manage to cross alive.

   

   

   Doesn't it happen all the time? not really. This eighth season especially seems to make more of an effort than necessary to make us reflect on the problems of our reality, occasionally leaving aside the development of its fictional characters.

   Of course, none of this is extremely serious, B99 is a passionate project with many great actors and producers behind it who know how to execute a comedy perfectly, even if it plays with elements of police thriller, suspense and action. The influence of series like The Office or Parks and Recreations is undeniable, creating a unique and emotional cocktail that stands on its own.

   

   

   I am very happy to have the opportunity to see the closure of the stories of all these characters, B99 is not a masterpiece that seeks to break artistic or narrative conventions but knows how to win our hearts, despite the fact that this time it could lose the focus a couple of times.

   Siempre me he sentido fascinado por la simple existencia de una sitcom con una premisa tan particular como Brooklyn Nine-Nine, la historia de un humilde precinto de la NYPD sabía mezclar inteligentemente la comedia con una sátira bastante ruidosa a la series policiales como The Law And Order, resultando en un producto interesante que progresivamente sirvió como un acceso para abordar varios temas "delicados" con una agilidad impresionante.

   

   Desde sus tímidos comienzos Brooklyn Nine-Nine fue una serie que nunca tuvo miedo a reconocer la realidad dentro de la cual existe, incluyendo en sus elementos temáticos todos los problemas sociales que caracterizaron nuestra última década (Especialmente el territorio norteamericano): el racismo, la homofobia, el machismo y las fallas sistemáticas que abundan en los cuerpos de seguridad americanos, problemas que resultan especialmente prominentes en esta última temporada.

   Mentiría si no les digo que es uno de mis aspectos favoritos de toda la serie creada por Michael Schur y Dan Goor en septiembre del 2013, capaz de abordar todo con una habilidad innegable sin caer en lo vulgar o exagerado, aunque se tratara de un campo minado en dónde casi siempre sus guionistas logran cruzar con vida.

   

   

   ¿Acaso no sucede todo el tiempo? realmente no. Está octava temporada especialmente parece esforzarse más de lo necesario en hacernos reflexionar sobre los problemas de nuestra realidad, dejando de vez en cuando un poco de lado el desarrollo de sus personajes ficticios.

   Por supuesto, nada de esto resulta extremadamente grave, B99 es un proyecto apasionado con muchos grandes actores y productores detrás que saben cómo ejecutar una comedia a la perfección, aunque juege con elementos de thriller policial, suspenso y acción. La influencia de series como The Office o Parks and Recreations es innegable, creando un cocktail único y emocional que se sostiene por si mismo.

   

   

   Me alegra mucho tener la oportunidad de ver el cierre de las historias de todos estos personajes, B99 no es una obra maestra que busque romper convenciones artísticas o narrativas pero sabe cómo ganarse nuestros corazones, a pesar de que en esta ocasión pudiese llegar a perder el foco un par de veces.

   I don't know why I let a whole year go by without seeing Brooklyn Nine-Nine, when I realized I ran to find the last season and I have been watching it non-stop.

   No sé por qué deje pasar un año entero sin ver Brooklyn Nine-Nine, cuando caí en cuenta corrí a buscar la ultima temporada y la he estado viendo sin parar.

   B99 seems to me one of the best comedies today and this is due to a great series of reasons, reasons that in this last season have been reaffirmed more strongly than ever. Perhaps the premise is not the most interesting in the world but it is undeniable that they execute it brilliantly.

   B99 me parece una de las mejores comedias en la actualidad y esto se debe a una gran serie de motivos, motivos que en esta ultima temporada se han reafirmado con más fuerza que nunca. Quizá la premisa no sea la más interesante del mundo pero es innegable que la ejecutan de forma brillante.

   The life of a police precinct in New York is too volatile as a concept and that's where the presentation of B99 shines, mixing the humorous moments with the drama and action typical of any police series.

   La vida de un precinto de la policía en Nueva York es demasiado volátil como concepto y allí es donde la presentación de B99 brilla, mezclando los momentos de humor con el drama y la acción propia de toda serie policial.

   Recurring gags, a very agile rhythm and characters that grow organically throughout all the seasons are what make this work so endearing.

   Gags recurrentes, un ritmo muy ágil y personajes que van creciendo de forma orgánica a lo largo de todas las temporadas son lo que hacen de esta obra tan entrañable.

   It is worth to highligh the evolution of Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago, and well, practically all the main and secondary characters that flood the precinct. It's too exciting to be able to see them again.

   Cabe destacar la evolución de Jake Peralta y Amy Santiago, y bueno, prácticamente todos los personajes principales y secundarios que inundan al precinto. Es demasiado emocionante poder verles otra vez.

   I can't think of a current comedy that plays so well with its own elements, and well, I look forward to wrapping up this season and sharing my final thoughts with you. The next one will be the last and I have the feeling that we are going to say goodbye like the greats.

   No puedo pensar en una comedia actual que juegue tan bien con sus propios elementos, y bueno, espero con ansias terminar esta temporada y compartirles mis opiniones finales. La siguiente será la ultima y tengo el presentimiento de que nos vamos a despedir como los grandes.

5. ›Brooklyn 99 is still a great show@netflixr2199d

   Many comedies kind of fizzle out after a couple of years in my opinion. For example: I really enjoyed Big Bang Theory for the first 2 or 3 seasons but then I kind of had a falling out with the show as a whole for a variety of reasons. One of the main ones being that there are only so many scenarios that you can accomplish when your set is just a few rooms in the same apartment building. Plus canned laughter kind of gets on my nerves after a while.

   The need for an overall story in sitcoms is a strong one, even though just like in Big Bang, Brooklyn 99's episodes are their own self-contained stories for the most part and the overall theme of the season is kind of a minor issue compared to the self-contained objective that is in each episode. For me anyway, ending Penny and Leonard's romantic tension by having them get together kind of killed the show. There are loads of other shows out there that kind of lost their edge over the years, but in my world, Brooklyn 99 has remained just as entertaining throughout the now 7 years that it has been on.

   I would imagine that there aren't a whole lot of people out there that are not familiar with this show already but if you are one of those folks, I highly suggest you give this show a try. The characters are all humorous for very different reasons and even though I guess Andy Samberg is the "star" of the show, various episodes focus on various actors. Really you could take anyone in the picture above and at least one episode per season is going to focus very heavily on them.

   

   Andy Samberg plays the role of Jake Peralta, who is a detective at the 99th precinct police station in Brooklyn (bet you never would have guessed that) and he is kind of similar to almost every other role that he has had in films: He seems like an idiot but somehow manages to be very good at his job and even though he appears to have bizarre ideas about how to solve crimes, they kind of work out for him.

   The other characters that are still listed as "main" on the credits include Terry Crews as Sargent Terry Jeffords, who is a sensitive yet massive member of the crew who has a soft spot for suspenders, yogurt cups, and his daughters. He isn't normally the true main character but he does have his moments.

   I think my favorite charcter is Captain Holt, who is played by Andre Braugher. Holt is a very strict and rather humorless commander of the precinct, who revels in things that most people would find very boring. He is also gay and is married to his equally humorless husband who is a professor of classical studies at Colombia University. They bore everyone else to tears but honestly, they are perfect for one another.

I have never met anyone like this in real life, but i am sure they exist.

   That's fun and all but what really makes 99 so interesting is that the episodes are designed so brilliantly. At just 22-24 minutes per episode, things keep moving in a montage type way with some flashbacks built into the story and basically, there is no downtime at all. This sort of quick storytelling really appeals to people with a short attention span, which unfortunately is me and probably most of the world.

   The things that have kept this show fresh is that they haven't run out of material nor have there been any actors or actresses that have left the show except for one (Chelsea Peretti) and both Peretti and the producers of B-99 have been very tight-lipped about why it is that she abruptly started being featured less in season 6 and then not at all in season 7. There is also no canned laughter and no studio audience, which is something that I have come to loathe in comedies anyway - especially ones that aren't funny.

   This is one of my favorite comedies of all time and I am pleased that it has maintained its edge over the years. It is, however, very inconsistent in its overall ratings. I don't know if 2 million viewers is considered enough by today's standards. It seems it would be.
