  1. Defending Jacob, one of the best series I've seen this year | Review [Eng / Esp]@gorayii1468d

    Source

I had days wanting to write this review, but between one thing and another I had not been able to complete it, not for that reason I would abandon it, it would be too unfair to one of the best crime drama series I've seen this year. There are series that depending on the plot you can watch them gradually, there are others that ask you for more, and there are series like Defending Jacob, so addictive, that they must be devoured mercilessly chapter after chapter.

Defending Jacob is an AppleTV production, another reference of the good material that Apple is producing in its bid to conquer the audiovisual segment. I had wanted to watch this series since its launch in late 2020, there were many arguments to catch my attention: the crime drama genre, the fact of being based on a novel that became a best-seller, and of course, the cast. Unfortunately, by then I didn't have my own subscription to the streaming network, so the wait took two years.

As soon as I started watching the series, I immediately felt connected with the story, when you are a parent it is easy to empathize with situations that jeopardize family peace. For any parent, children are sacred, we fully trust in the upbringing we have given them, in the values we have instilled in them, and we would never consider the possibility of seeing them involved in irregular acts, even less in criminal acts. However, the fact that we find it hard to believe does not mean that something like this cannot happen, does it?

Okay, let me put you in the context of what happens in Defending Jacob. Andy Barber, played by Chris Evans, is a lawyer assistant district attorney investigating a murder that occurred in a park near his residence. The victim is a classmate of his son Jacob (Jaeden Martell). As the investigation progresses, the case takes a new twist that makes Jacob, his 14-year-old son, the main suspect in the crime, reason enough to remove him from office and assign the case to a new lawyer.

Meanwhile, Andy and his wife Laurie (Michelle Dockery) focus on the defense of their son under the advice of a prominent and skilled lawyer who will try to convince the jury of Jacob's innocence, or at least get a favorable conviction. The days leading up to the trial are difficult for the family, they live closely with the public repudiation, the harassment of the media, and the condemnation of society for Andy's family's past. Despite the circumstances, they try to stay afloat and pretend a normal life.

Throughout the trial, Andy is confident in his son's confession of innocence, has no doubts about him, and devotes his time and efforts to investigating possible suspects who might divert attention from his son. His wife Laurie, on the other hand, is overcome with doubt, Jacob's behavior, his conduct, and his emotional reaction to the facts disturb her. For her, evidence to the contrary may reveal a hidden truth.

A truly dramatic series, infused with intense and addictive suspense that hooks you from the very first episode. Defending Jacob is by far one of the best series I've seen this year, and have I watched a lot of them lately. I loved enjoying this other side of Chris Evans, the image of the funny, handsome, and nice guy, is left behind, here gives way to another side of his staging, for me, one of the best of his career. Of Jaeden Martell's performance, not to mention, he managed to give life to a boy who lives absorbed in himself, in his loneliness, in his silence, in his own darkness; what Jaeden achieved with Jacob, makes the difference in the story.

In the 8 chapters that the series lasts, until the last minutes, you will question everything. You'll doubt everything, and suddenly you'll say wow, I didn't see that coming! The ending leaves the door open for the next season, which as far as I know, is not confirmed, but could tell us much of what remains to be deciphered. I can't wait to read the book that inspired this series, I think I'll be able to get a lot of answers there.

Personally, beyond the fact that I loved the series for the genre itself, which is one of my favorites, the series struck a sensitive chord in me as a mother. We love our children, we would give everything for them, and we fully trust in the being we have raised and educated; however, the reality is that when they leave the protection provided by the wings of mom and dad, they face a new world, a world that can be very cruel, and that somehow leads them to forge a character that gives them security, confidence, and personality. Unfortunately, in this process of self-recognition, the response they find in their environment is not always the most adequate.

If you have the chance to watch this series, don't miss it, I recommend it with my eyes closed. I don't think I've been this pleased with a series like this since I saw Mare of Easttown.

Hello friends, this weekend I saw a miniseries that I had in my pending to see it and that some friends had recommended to me, it is a story based on the novel of the same name by William Landay. It premiered in 2020, but since the reviews were not very good, I was late in deciding to watch it and I regret it because it surprised me, not only is it a suspenseful psychological drama, but it makes us reflect. How far should parents go to protect their children? What is that thin line that separates doing the right thing or not, to protect them? Questions that in this miniseries gives us a look at these questions in an intelligent and believable way.

Created by Mark Bomback. Directed by Mark Bomback and Morten Tyldum, the same director of "The Enigma Code", just to name one, this miniseries prints its slow touch, but not slow in how the story unfolds. Perhaps because of this style and his way of telling the story, very different from what we usually see, he did not have the success he deserved. A cast of leading actors such as: Chris Evans (remembered Captain America), Michelle Dockery and Jaeden Martell, form the family that will have to go from being the ideal family to being the family most hated by their neighbors and friends. This miniseries focuses on family relationships, couples, parents and children and to ask ourselves how well we really know the people we love.

The story deals with how assistant prosecutor Andy Barber (Chris) investigates the murder of a boy (Ben Rifkin), his son's classmate, and how the investigation points to his son being the prime suspect in the crime. Andy will defend the innocence of his son tooth and nail, but for his mother, Laurie (Michelle), it will not be so easy. She will be torn between the love she feels for her son, Jacob (Jaeden), and not believing her innocence. We will see how suspicions that her son is a murderer change her lives, jobs and friendships forever. Making living in her community a living hell. While her father will do everything to prove his innocence.

The performances of its protagonists are solid and especially the character of Jacob, Jaeden's interpretation is magnificent. It also has a first class cast such as: Betty Gabriel, Sakina Jaffrey, Cherry Jones, Pablo Schreiber, J.K. Simmons, Bradley Ryan Knispel and others. Who with their performances keeps us on edge in each chapter. This miniseries is told in flashbacks, as Andy begins to tell the story to determine whether or not he should go to trial in his case. I think the main thing about this miniseries is not about the murder but how the fact of being accused and being suspected completely upsets the dynamics of the family nucleus and with it the skeletons that each one has in the closet.

I am not a mother, but at the age of 19 I worked in the summers in a criminal court as an assistant, there I was able to verify that many mothers or fathers refuse to see their children as they are, even when they are arrested in flagrante delicto committing a crime. I remember in particular a mother who cried and swore that her son was innocent even when he was arrested committing the crime (Armed robbery), there was no way he accepted the guilt of her son. This mother did not have the means to do something, but if she had, she would have done it. This is when I wonder how far a father or mother is capable of defending her son? If he is she guilty, wouldn't she care? Would you do whatever was legal or right? Does love for children justify everything? These are questions that are not easy to answer.

Each case is very different and particular but this miniseries shows us this reality and how the answer can be. I can't imagine the pain and despair so great that parents must feel when seeing their son accused of a murder or serious crime, if he never had problems. It is a difficult situation and here he shows us how that undermines the family nucleus. I liked the miniseries and if you have the opportunity to see it, do it, I recommend it. For me it is an 8 out of 10.

  4. Defending Jacob: Good thriller for Apple TV@serialfiller2146d

Last year, the streaming offer saw a new big competitor descend into the arena built by Netflix a few years ago.

If it were the beginning of a big tennis tournament, we would say that this participant could be the big surprise of the competition, ready to challenge Federer and Djokovic on the grass of Wimbledon.

An up-and-coming player with many successes in other sports and who now wants to become "great", even in the sport that gave the glory to Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe.

The Apple, which has been populating and "branding" our PCs and smartphones for decades, has decided to enter the television world, launching its own streaming platform:

Apple TV The multinational company made famous by the late Steve Jobs presented itself on tiptoe but with a huge ambition: to give Netflix a hard time.

It won't be easy, given the flourishing of many other important realities, such as Amazon and Hulu, Disney, Quibi, and so on.

There are now about ten original titles launched by Apple TV and, even if the "break" product capable of universally warming the hearts of audiences and critics hasn't appeared yet, that ambition seems to have quite solid foundations.

Apple's strategy seems to be quite different from that of its opponents, offering, in itself, an important novelty to the viewer.

In a little less than a year we have witnessed many products of medium-high quality, spread on totally different genres, able to cover almost the entire target audience. A very, very broad spectrum that has allowed everyone to become familiar with the Apple TV brand and remain intrigued by it.

So far it lacks, maybe with the exception of The Morning Show, the title to write in the annals and recommend urbi et orbi, but the work done so far, from For All Mankind to Little America, through See and The Servant, is remarkable.

One of the products that make up this offer is Defending Jacob.

Absolute protagonist of the series is Chris Evans, the legendary Captain America of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who is playing a less colorful and cartoonish but equally energetic and heroic role.

Evans plays Andy Barber, Jacob's father (Jaeden Martell) and Laurie's husband (Michelle Dockery).

Andy is an assistant district attorney who will be forced to dive body and soul into a case that will affect him very closely.

The initial images show Andy, mysteriously, on the other side of the barricade, intent on defending himself against an accusation that only later we discover to be linked to an event that has shocked the community in which he lives.

An event that is shown to us from the first, dense, episode. The death of a child, Jacob's age, shakes the town where the Barbers live a happy and quiet life, loved and respected by all.

The pilot is very intense and shows us, with very dark atmospheres and tones, how the death of a young boy can feed suspicions and paranoia but also unleash the worst in people.

The investigations move quickly and, as is clearly a must in these cases, they are concentrated in the direction of a sexual predator, a pedophile, who lives in the area.

The equation is simple and quick.

A child dies, is killed, and immediately the blame lies with those who have had a perverse and unhealthy relationship with children in the past.

If then, that man, lives 2 steps from the crime scene, the case seems to be already solved.

This is the risk we run nowadays, in an age where we are overwhelmed by information about anyone and we are conditioned by what we read, see, believe we understand.

The suspect's ironclad alibi will cause panic in the population and lead to a truth that will upset the lives of the Barbers.

The fingerprints we found on poor Ben's clothing are Jacob's.

Young Jacob, Andy's son, will be arrested.

    The charge is murder.

    Andy and Laurie are devastated.

    Jacob incredulous.

    The Barbers' ordeal begins here.

    Andy's mission begins here.

    Laurie's pain begins here.

The Barber couple's inner struggles will follow.

The courage of a father willing to do anything to save his son from a hard life in prison.

In between is the truth, that stubborn truth that's getting harder and harder to find these days.

Chris Evans proves that he is not only an actor in "tights", as he has amply demonstrated on other occasions, but that he is an actor capable of moving strong emotions, with his physicality and his innocent but determined face, like a good boy capable of getting his hands dirty.

  5. Defending Jacob: first impressions about the pilot with Chris Evans@serialfiller2248d

    Tunnel Wave.png

Apple tv could really be Netflix's real competitor? While it's true that Amazon Video is managing to keep up with Netflix on certain aspects, it's also true that it's not managing to produce many high level titles, limiting itself to 5-6 excellent productions of great success. A few small flops, some series that remain niche but nothing compared to the firepower that Netflix is expressing. Not even Disney +, for the moment, is collecting huge response but there's at least 1-2 years to wait with the release of the first Marvel products on the platform. And so among the 2 fighters is likely to enjoy the third aspiring competitor:

    Apple TV

Let's start by saying that so far Apple TV hasn't made any masterpieces. But that doesn't mean it's not surprising, on the contrary. It has so far managed to release about 10 products, all different, varied genres and always new settings. If you look at all 10 products, none of them are below the sufficiency. On the contrary. All of them are on average good, some very good, a couple excellent. The latest addition to Apple tv is:

    Defending Jacob

The protagonist and executive producer is Chris Evans. The face that has lent his body and face to Captain America for years is called here to play a less muscular and more dramatic character. Evans plays, in fact, a lawyer, a deputy prosecutor who suddenly and for no apparent reason is presented to us in front of the Grand Jury. From there a long flashback will start that will take us back to a crime of a boy that happened 10 months earlier. The victim was a school friend of Evans' son, Jacob. Hence, presumably, the title of the series itself. After only one episode the feeling is to be in front of a product that will not change your life but that will stimulate you enough to continue watching.

L'ultimo arrivato in casa Apple tv è:

    Defending Jacob
