  1. Fracture (film): Anthony Hopkins shines in this mostly great film@netflixr431d

It's kind of difficult to go wrong with the man who I think is one of the best actors of our time and this is true even with movies of his that are generally considered to not be really all the great such as Hearts in Atlantis which was stupid but his performance still makes the film worth watching.

Not many people can pull off a role like Hopkins does and even though I didn't care for the way that this one ended, I did like the rather wild ride that this courtroom drama took us on.

    image.png src

For younger people the fact that Ryan Gosling is co-starring in this film might actually be more of a draw but I'll let you know right now that he is not his usual dreamy self in this one and I believe that his character is actually meant to be a bit off-putting at times.

The story here is that a very powerful man named Ted (Hopkins) is running around watching what appears to be a happy couple do their thing at a residence but not far into the film we discover that the woman involved in this loving romance that we see a bit of actually involves his wife, Jennifer.

Jennifer is significantly younger than Ted, but not much is explained about how that happened, I suppose we are meant to believe that she was something of a trophy wife because Ted's life is certainly lavish as he scoots round town in his supercar and returns to his home with servants manning the gardens even though it is quite late at night at the time of his arrival.

    image.png src

I thought this was a bit strange because that looks like a Grandfather / daughter type of situation rather than a romantic one and I didn't really see that coming but well, I suppose Jennifer didn't really see it coming when Ted shoots her in the face.

That's not a spoiler, it happens in the first 10 minutes of the film, is heavily featured in the trailer and is even in the writeup that you would see explaining what the film is about on any streaming service that offers it.

That's not really the meat and potatoes of the story: The real story is how Ted admits that he did the crime when a hostage negotiator turns up to negotiate. Ted also signs a confession to the murder later on at the police station.

The other side of the story here is that Willy (Gosling) is working for the district attorney's office and he is getting out and going to work in the private sector for a huge and powerful law firm. He decides to take on this case involving Ted because it seems like a slam dunk since they have a murder weapon, a guy that admitted to the crime, and a signed confession all in the same situation.

    image.png src

Things don't seem so slam dunk as the trial carries on though, because as it turns out (and is necessary for the plot), Ted is hyper-intelligent and decides to represent himself in court, bypassing all attorney privileges and at first seems like a doting old man that isn't taking the situation seriously. Things take a dark turn when everyone starts to realize that this might have actually been a meticulously planned murder that because of the pieces of the equation, Ted is actually going to get away with.

I'll leave it at that but lets just say that these things are not presented to you in an obvious way nor do you really expect what you end up seeing next. Ted (again, Hopkins) presents himself in public as being this wonderful grandpa type person and the way that they frame it you almost end up feeling bad for this poor old man even though we, the audience, already know exactly what happened.

What started as an easy last case for "Willy" starts to slowly become and absolute nightmare that could railroad his entire career trajectory.

    image.png src

There is still a completely unnecessary romance built in there (it's also wildly inappropriate given the circumstances) and the romance is completely unneeded and doesn't really have any bearing on the trajectory of the overall story. I guess it is just required in all Gosling films that this particular side-story be part of it. Whatever! It doesn't ruin things but is certainly the least interesting part of what is going on.

In the end things don't really go the way that you think they are going to and that is something that really appealed to me about this. It almost seemed like it was going down the path that Korean films often do in that you don't always just assume the "good guys" are going to win. Seriously, if you don't watch Korean films you really should start, they are truly something amazing and involve movie tactics that unfortunately aren't often employed in Hollywood even though I really wish they would.

    Should I watch it?

Even though this movie is nearly 20 years old, I find it to be rather unique in the way that it is presented and even though I personally would have preferred a different ending, the overall film is much better than most of its type, or really most films just generally speaking. I will watch anything that Hopkins is involved in and since that was made in 2007, I would say that Hopkins was kind of in his prime back then and these are important years to see his work.

Gosling does reasonably well in this one and being in this film likely increased his stock value in acting even though anyone is going to be overshadowed when acting opposite Hopkins.

I had planned on this film putting me to sleep but instead I was wide awake during all of it. It's a winner!

photodune-6774981-recommended-grunge-red-stamp-xs-643x272.jpg In some regions this is available on Netflix, but for reasons I don't understand it is quite limited in its range. It can be rented on Amazon, Apple, and Fandango

  2. Retro Film Review: Fracture (2007)@drax653d

    (source: tmdb.org)

One of the most irritating trends in Hollywood is the tendency of truly great, talented, and established actors to allow themselves to appear in abysmally poor films, often knowing that it will not harm their reputation at all. Some of the most notable examples are provided by the late careers of Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, and Anthony Hopkins, who could also be seen as one of the examples. After winning an Oscar for his performance in The Silence of the Lambs and turning Hannibal Lecter into an icon of contemporary pop culture, Hopkins began to portray more or less the same dry, cold, and impersonal character in Hollywood films for the next decade and a half. For viewers craving a bit more variety in his repertoire, in 2007 he provided, for the first time since Lecter, the role of a demonic villain, thanks to Fracture, a courtroom thriller directed by Gregory Hoblit. Unfortunately, Hopkins's performance, impressive as it may be, cannot elevate a film built on rather flimsy script foundations.

In the film, Hopkins plays Ted Crawford, a wealthy and successful aeronautical engineer who discovers that his young wife, Jennifer (played by Embeth Davidtz), is cheating on him. Instead of divorcing her, the jealous husband coldly shoots her in the head and then, with the same cold demeanour, calls the police, turns himself in, and confesses to the crime. A seemingly routine criminal case is entrusted to a young, successful, and arrogant prosecutor, Willy Beachum (played by Ryan Gosling), who wants to wrap up this formality as quickly as possible before securing a lucrative job in a private law firm. However, while in the courtroom, Crawford retracts his confession, which is just one of a series of unpleasant surprises awaiting Beachum. It turns out that the killer is quite well acquainted with how the justice system operates and has planned what appears to be the perfect crime.

Gregory Hoblit is not a director known for great achievements on the big screen, but his oeuvre, dominated by thrillers and courtroom dramas, reflects considerable skill gathered on television, as well as the ability to extract the maximum from the cast. In Fracture, he utilises Hopkins playing a villain who is far more "prosaic," yet also more convincing and sinister than Lecter. Gosling, who has just been established as one of the best “hot” new Hollywood actors, is also very good in the role of a "yuppie" lawyer facing the fact that he has met his match.

However, both good acting and good directing are of little use when based on a weak script by Glenn Gers and Daniel Pyne, in which the demonic plan of the antagonist relies on a series of extremely bizarre and completely unconvincing coincidences. Once the experienced viewer recognises the direction in which the plot is heading, the characters' actions are reduced to the usual clichés, and there is, of course, the expected final twist that aligns Fracture with Hollywood conventions. Yet, even more irritating than everything else is the completely unnecessary subplot regarding the main character's relationship with a future employer played by Rosamund Pike. Inserted solely to somehow explain the moral epiphany of the protagonist near the end, this segment makes Fracture overly long, unwatchable, and far worse than its impressive cast should suggest.

    RATING: 4/10 (+)

  3. Fracture (2007): the perfect crime? | ¿el crimen perfecto?@cristiancaicedo1382d

Starring Anthony Hopkins & Ryan Gosling Protagonizada por Anthony Hopkins & Ryan Gosling

Last week Netflix surprised me with the presence of this movie on its platform. Not because I think there aren't similar movies on Netflix, but because I had no idea it existed, a psychological thriller starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling? Why didn't I know anything about this film? Where was I fifteen years ago when it premiered? and above all, how come I hadn't seen it yet?

I wouldn't say I'm a Ryan Gosling fan, but I've seen about twenty of his movies. On the contrary, I do consider Anthony Hopkins one of the best actors I have ever seen on screen, an obvious and quite popular opinion. So as soon as I heard about this story, I got ready to see it on the streaming platform. Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling) is an ambitious young prosecutor whose career is starting to take off, he is about to move into private law, hired by a major firm just as he's assigned his last case, that of Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins), a middle-aged aeronautical engineer who has just murdered his wife in cold blood. Having the murderer's confession, the case should be easy to win or at least that's what it seems at first, but Ted has more to tell and everything takes on an even more tense climate when it is revealed that the defendant's wife has not died: she's in a coma, a situation that puts her, the prosecutor and the spectators, before a great expectation, an uncertain pause.

One of the things I liked about this thiller is that it handles a different style than many of the others. Here you don't see a mysterious murderer or a body suddenly appear on some beach. The opening sequence of the film is the murder itself. We see it all in the first fifteen minutes of the film. We see the motive, the murder weapon, the location, the victim and of course we see the murderer, how are they going to make a two-hour movie if everything is so clear from the start? Precisely for that very reason: because it's not as clear as it seems.

It's inevitable to see Ted behind bars talking to the prosecutor and not thinking about Hannibal Lecter. It's true that there are substantial differences between the characters, but Ted is also cunning, very intelligent and seems to be one step ahead of everyone else, making Willy look ridiculous on more than one occasion. For his part, the prosecutor played by Ryan Gosling also resembles other characters played by him (the vast majority actually): young, arrogant, seductive, successful. At the beginning, perhaps because of that same arrogance, the spectators have a hard time taking sides, who do they want to win the trial? The confident and arrogant prosecutor or the man who tried to murder his own wife? The good thing about these types of movies is that there are no anthology heroes or villains because everyone has a little (or a lot) of both, just like us.

I confess that although I don't really like reading them, I do like watching police and psychological thrillers on the big screen. They are like my entertainment cinema. When I don't want to watch a very dense or deep movie, instead of watching some blockbuster or one of those Mission: Impossible style action stories, I watch thrillers because I think good movies come out of them. However, in the particular case of Fracture I think there are some flaws. The whole beginning and development of the trial, the way Ted plays the law in his favor, trying to dislodge Willy and succeeding several times, works well. This rivalry in court is really more striking than the resolution of the case and the attempted murder itself. But, in my opinion, the end, that is, that key that is revealed at the end, has flaws. Flaws that I prefer not to mention to avoid spoilers, but I would say that in the second half of the film things start to feel very forced.

Since the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, both the mystery of the locked room and the execution of the perfect crime have been an obsession of crime writers. Fracture focuses on the latter, is it really possible to murder a person and leave no trace, not a single suspicion? Can a criminal get away with murder if he thinks of all the possibilities? The movie has its own answer and although I wouldn't say that Fracture is one of the best thrillers I've seen, I would say that it's good enough to keep the viewer glued to their seat for a couple of hours and leave them feeling good taste in the mouth, something that is not so easy lately, especially with action movies and Netflix original stories, have any of you seen Fracture? did you like it? I read you in the comments.

  4. Fracture || Anthony Hopkins' outstanding performance and the cat and mouse game@cute-cactus1412d

Not everything is as it seems. What is easy can be difficult and what is difficult can be easy.

An old man, weaving through traffic, is in a hurry to prove his young wife unfaithful. I do not welcome infidelity between couples when the option of separation is on the sidelines, but I am not so unscrupulous that I want them to die. But there is always the possibility of murder in infidelity between couples.

The film Fracture was released in 2007 and was the scene of Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling's cat and mouse game. You can consider what I wrote above as the plot of the film because they contain the opening scene of the film.

Many things can be said about Anthony Hopkins, but in general terms, I choose to remain silent and stay within the boundaries of the film. In his role, he plays Ted Crawford, a cold-blooded and intelligent character. Ted is the victimised husband who is cheated on, but punishes his wife instantly. There is no mystery at the beginning of the film because right at the beginning of the film Ted points a gun and shoots his wife in an attempt to kill her. He thinks his wife is dead. He confesses to the police who come to the house and hands over the murder weapon!

    [source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/mujUrk2diGe5vRCb3kdpHZeobRs.jpg)

So far, it can be seen as a simple crime, a simple case and a detective film, but forget the above, and if you don't forget it, the film will make you forget it because the flow of events that seem to be over is actually just beginning.

Willy Beachum (played by Ryan Gosling) is a successful lawyer with a 97% winning rate and is about to start working in another law firm. How hard can a murder case with the above confession be for such a career lawyer?

This is where the cat and mouse game between the two starts. I'm not talking about the cat and mouse games in Tom and Jerry. lol. The dialogues between them, their attempts to refute each other's evidence, and the moves that require superior intelligence ensure that the needle that will show the winner constantly changes direction.

The film has a good reflection on watching the film carefully, I had the feeling that I should watch it more carefully in a way I can't understand how. While looking for evidence like looking for a needle in a haystack, sometimes we also see attempts to produce evidence from the parties. The ethics of this is questionable, and some of the characters do so as well.

    [source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/6Y6XJg43ECtlupeYqbp4nTJgVCz.jpg)

For Ryan Gosling, starring in the same film with Anthony Hopkins has undoubtedly been a great pleasure and luck. However, it has been the biggest disadvantage to be compared with Anthony Hopkins' performance in the role because although Ryan Gosling is successful, Anthony Hopkins' performance ensures that all attention is on him. One is a big plane tree and the other looks like a sapling trying to grow in its shadow.

You can watch Fracture without getting bored, I can give full marks to the film in terms of the beginning and the continuation of the story, but after the clever confrontations, there seemed to be something missing in the binding of the film. For example, when Ted denied that he was the one who shot his wife, no one asked or questioned why he didn't call the police despite the time that had passed. While a lot of evidence was cleverly refuted, such a simple mistake was remarkable.

And it was interesting how one bullet could kill two people! My favourite scene was the genius of removing the murder weapon from the house.

  5. Reseña: Crimen perfecto // Review: Fracture@presidentx1614d

    image.png

    Fuente

A title that I had among my pending accounts, already somewhat old. I wanted to see it, because of the premise or the idea that I was going to see a perfect crime, I leave you my comments. It was released in 2007. Its director is Gregory Hoblit.

District Attorney William Beachum, a case comes to him out of the blue, in his last days working for the state. He accepts it because of the ease with which the case sounds. In a murder, the gun and the murderer were found, and he left an affidavit accepting the facts. Something that seemed to end quickly, ends up twisting in very unexpected ways. Leaving the case, as possibly a perfect crime.

    Fracture Fuente

In the main roles we have William played by a young Ryan Gosling, while the rich murderer Theodore Crawford is played by Anthony Hopkins. Let's start with the plot, that although it shows an interesting case, leaving us eager to know its final resolution, it has a flaw in trying to lengthen certain intermissions, besides being inconsequential.

    Fracture Fuente

Another point that I see bad, is the performance of Gosling, I do not get to convince me as a district attorney, besides giving a somewhat eccentric personality to the character. On the other hand Hopkins, if he manages to make a good role of villain mastermind, noting his experience with this type of characters.

That said, and having an acceptable technical work, it ends up being an intriguing film, leaving you eager to know the conclusion of the case. I think the film could have used one more secondary theme to mix it up, as it would have given it more dynamism.

I recommend it if you like detective movies with a mix of lawyers.

  6. Análisis de la película "Fractura"/Analysis of the film "Fracture"@lumpymoon1742d

    Negando la pérdida/Denying the loss

Today I will talk about a film that deals with one of the different ways to cope with a loss, how the brain is able to deceive in order not to risk the mental health of the person, to generate a defense mechanism to not violate the feelings, emotions and perceptions before the true reality and stay in a less overwhelming and more bearable state.

The story focuses on a small family (father, mother and daughter) that will undertake a trip to visit their relatives in winter time, but like any family there will be discussions that will transform the atmosphere and make it tense and somewhat frustrating for everyone. The youngest daughter mentions that she has to go to the bathroom and they go to a gas station on the side of the road, the father, who will be our protagonist, decides to go buy some coffee to clear his mind.

The girl has a moment of distraction and in an oversight suffers a fall from a steep height, the father noticing that accident, immediately goes to where his daughter is and see if she is okay. He realizes that his daughter has fractures and together with his wife he takes her to the nearest hospital to give her the necessary attention.

When he arrives at the hospital he goes to the administrative area to ask for immediate attention to his daughter, after several attempts his daughter is admitted with her mother and the father is left in the waiting room. But as time goes by, he realizes that both of them do not come out of that medical checkup, so he starts to ask the reason for the delay and nobody gives him an answer.

Starting to draw your own conclusions, the direction of the story catches you off guard and you don't even know what factor you didn't see to give it that unexpected twist. The narrative as seen by the protagonist will make you think about who is the real villain here, who is the liar or what is the logic of the theories that will emerge throughout the story. Each scene that takes place goes deeper into the mental processes that the protagonist goes through, you see everything through his eyes and you won't find any mistake in the story.

    Atentamente: Lumpy:3

The film uses the confusion of perspectives to push you over the edge and hook you from beginning to end in the unfolding of its story and knows exactly how to surprise you. That's not to say it won't make sense or leave you with a lifelong void, believe me it will leave you very satisfied with the conclusion. You'll find the film within the Netflix platform and it's one of my favorite recommendations. If you have seen it tell me in the comments how you thought about it. Thanks for reading my post and until next time.

    Sincerely: Lumpy:3

  7. Fracture (Film): Review.@martinmcfly2779d

Yesterday I talked about the movie The Judge, and because I had to check the movies section on legal topics to find the DVD, I happened to meet Fracture, a movie I had seen years ago and from which I could remember almost nothing, however, it caught my attention again, so I decided to see it today, taking advantage of the fact that it was Sunday and that it is the day of the week that I take to see more than one movie. That's why, to take advantage of the fact that I've seen her recently, I decided to talk about her.

Year: 2007 Category: Legal Drama. Director: Gregory Hoblit. Cast: Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling, David Strathairn, Rosamund Pike, Embeth Davidtz, Billy Burke, Cliff Curtis, Fiona Shaw, Bob Gunton.

    Plot

The film tells the story of a man who shoots his wife unfaithful, and then surrenders to the authorities without resisting and confessing the crime. A young and successful prosecutor will take charge of the case, a case that is relatively easy given the circumstances, but not everything is what it seems, because the case will be complicated when the accused decides to declare innocent and exercise their own defense.

    Opinion

The film tells the story of Ted Crawford, an engineer who shot his wife unfaithful, and Willy Beachum, a young and ambitious prosecutor on the rise. One of them will challenge the other, causing a personal duel. This duel reminds me of the eternal discussion between lawyers and engineers, in which each one explains why it is considered brighter. Crawford turns out to be as complex as the crime he has committed, so what was an easy case begins to crumble along with Willy's career and future.

The film stands out for its impeccable technical quality, as its photography and soundtrack that increases the intrigue in its most important points. The film has excellent moments and others that can be considered bad. It never becomes boring, in fact, it is entertaining despite having no action. There are not too many changes in the argument, although there are several unexpected and questionable turns. The way in which the script, the performances and the direction of the film are assembled remind us at all times that we are watching a film of a completely judicial nature.

The best thing about the film is undoubtedly the duel between the two protagonists, the rest does not generate any interest, because the other characters do not take on a life of their own, but are used as mere narrative elements, figures that are there to represent something from the vision of the protagonist, but they do not have a meaning of their own. The crime does not represent any mystery, from the beginning we are revealed what happened, the only thing that really intrigues is how Mr. Crawford has managed to evade justice and complicate the case to Willy.

Gosling makes a good performance, and although some people have not liked his performance, I must say that I liked it, since it has merit the way in which he projects the image of a successful lawyer, even when his character He really does not have a single chance to demonstrate the good that everyone says he is and that he believes himself to be.

Although the duel between the two protagonists is the most interesting thing in the film, I must say that I would have liked to see a true duel of privileged minds, in which one of them is declared as the unquestionable winner, however, the film It leaves me the impression that the hand of the writers played a very important role at the moment of establishing certain turns, especially at the end of the film, which seem unbelievable and below the level seen.

In a certain way the film has a kind of balance between its virtues and negative aspects, it will not be to everyone's liking, but I am sure that a specific audience may like it.

    Score

    6/10

The photographic work of the film is well done and envelops us in an atmosphere that makes us enjoy the film without problems. To the lovers of the thriller and the legal films I recommend the film, the rest can refrain from seeing it if they wish.
