  1. Hunter Killer || A Solid Submarine Action Flick@teknon623d

    Screenshot_20241013-161513_1.png

Hunter Killer wasn’t exactly at the top of my watch-list, but when I finally got around to watching it, boy, I was pleasantly surprised. A submarine thriller with Gerard Butler as the lead? Sign me up! It’s the kind of movie where you know you’re going to get tension, explosions and a few moments where you just have to suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride. In all honesty, I was mostly drawn to this film because of Gerard Butler. His eyes are charming.

    Spoiler Alert

    Screenshot_20241013-161533_1.png

The film follows the story of Captain Glass (Gerard Butler), a relatively untested submarine commander who finds himself in the middle of an international crisis. When an American submarine is mysteriously sunk in Russian waters, Glass is sent on a mission to investigate. But things spiral out of control when it’s revealed that the Russian president (Alexander Diachenko) has been taken hostage by a rogue Russian defense minister, Durov, attempting a coup.

Glass’s mission isn’t just to navigate treacherous waters and avoid Russian attack submarines. He’s also tasked with rescuing the Russian president with the help of a Navy SEAL team operating on land, led by Lieutenant Beaman (Toby Stephens). With the world on the brink of war, which of course is what Durov aims at, Captain Glass has to make quick decisions to prevent global catastrophe.

    My Review and Rating

One of the things I appreciate about Hunter Killer is that it delivers exactly what you expect from a submarine thriller; nail-biting tension, claustrophobic environments, and high-stakes military action. The film doesn’t waste much time on unnecessary exposition; it drops you right into the action and that pacing keeps things engaging throughout.

    Screenshot_20241013-161428_1.png

Gerard Butler, as usual, is in very fine form as Captain Glass. His performance in my opinion is groundbreaking, solid and dependable. Butler’s characters in the action movies I've seen all seem to have that gruff, no-nonsense vibe and Captain Glass is no different. He’s not flashy, but he gets the job done. What I enjoyed most was the dynamic between Glass and his crew. There’s a sense of camaraderie and trust that adds a layer of authenticity to the film’s submarine scenes.

    Screenshot_20241013-161716_1.png

The SEAL team subplot also adds an exciting change of pace, with some properly executed ground action that breaks up the underwater tension. Watching the SEALs infiltrate Russian territory while Glass maneuvers through hostile waters creates a beautiful duality of tension, both above and below the surface.

Now, here’s where I have to point out the film's flaws. The portrayal of the Russians. Hunter Killer falls into that classic Hollywood trap of reducing Russians to stock villains. I honestly can't place a finger on why Russia is always beefing with America and vice versa. There’s a rogue defense minister trying to start a war, but the Russian president is portrayed as the noble exception and most of the other Russian characters are either villainous or passive. It’s not the most nuanced depiction of international politics, and it feels a bit outdated. Anyway it was released in 2018 so what can I say?

    Screenshot_20241013-161729_1.png

If you’re looking for an entertaining, action-packed movie with submarines, special ops, and Gerard Butler saving the day, this film is right up your alley. It's a tightly written, deeply character driven political thriller.

I have to give props to the visual effects too. The underwater sequences are well done and the film manages to create a sense of claustrophobic tension in the submarine scenes.

    Rating? I love it so it'll be a 4.5/5

    Screenshot_20241013-161450_1.png

Hunter Killer delivers the thrills. It’s a solid submarine action flick that’s worth watching if you’re a fan of the genre. Not speaking out of sentiment but Gerard Butler is always fun to watch in action, and trust me this movie keeps you entertained from start to finish.

    [Source](https://s3.amazonaws.com/static.rogerebert.com/uploads/review/primary_image/reviews/hunter-killer-2018/hunter-killer-2018.jpg)

Hello friends, I'm here with another interesting movie title Hunter Killer and I would like to share you with here.

The movie is about the captain of the American submarine, Joe Glass, joins forces with the US Navy SEALs to save the Russian president who was kidnapped during a secret military coup.

It begins when the U.S. Los Angeles-class submarine, USS Tampa Bay, disappears while shadowing the Russian Akula-class submarine konek, in the Arctic.

Rear Admiral John Fisk orders the newly promoted and unconventional Commander Joe Glass to lead the investigation on board the Virginia-class submarine USS Arkansas.

At the same time, a Navy SEAL team commanded by Lieutenant Bill Beaman leads a Navy SEAL team on a covert mission to observe a Russian naval base in Polyarny, Murmansk Oblast.

However, their operation is compromised when Martinelli, a newly recruited marksman, gets injured during the HALO drop.

At the base, the SEALs witness Defense Minister Admiral of the Fleet Dmitriy Durov staging a coup d'état and capturing Russian President Nikolai Zakarin.

They quickly realize that Durov's intention is to instigate a war.

The SEALs narrowly avoid detection during a radio intercept check by the Russians, but Martinelli gets shot in the leg by a Russian officer who blindly fires at their concealed position.

Consequently, the team is forced to leave him behind.

Meanwhile, Arkansas makes a distressing discovery as they come across the wreckage of Tampa Bay, with no survivors found.

Additionally, they stumble upon the sunken Russian submarine konek, which appears to have been damaged from within, indicating possible internal sabotage rather than an external attack.

Their situation takes a turn for the worse when they are unexpectedly attacked by another Russian submarine, Volkov, which had been concealed beneath an iceberg.

It becomes evident that Volkov was responsible for the unprovoked torpedoing of Tampa Bay.

However, Arkansas manages to retaliate and successfully rescues the Russian survivors from konek, including their commanding officer, Captain 2nd rank Sergei Andropov.

The U.S. government uncovers the coup, leading Admiral Charles Donnegan to recommend war preparations.

On the other hand, Fisk suggests that Arkansas should rendezvous with Beaman's team once they rescue Zakarin.

Glass persuades the hesitant Andropov to provide assistance, and must also convince his crew to accept Andropov's presence and trust him.

Utilizing Andropov's expertise in navigating the challenging underwater terrain and the minefield guarding the base, Glass successfully guides Arkansas near the base undetected.

Beaman's team manages to save Oleg, an agent of the Russian Presidential Security Service, who was previously shot while protecting Zakarin by Durov's men.

They work together to infiltrate the base and successfully retrieve President Zakarin, but lose Oleg, Devin Hall, and Matt Johnstone in the process.

With Martinelli providing sniper cover, Beaman brings the injured president to an Arkansas deep-submergence rescue vehicle and then returns alone to rescue Martinelli, who is about to be executed.

As the U.S. and Russian fleets get ready for battle, Arkansas suffers more damage when it is attacked by RFS Yevchenko.

Andropov's old ship, which is now commanded by Captain Vlade Sutrev, a member of Durov's conspiracy.

However, Andropov manages to convey a message to Yevchenko that President Zakarin is on board the submarine.

Find out what happened next as Andropov manages to convey a message to Yevchenko that President Zakarin is on board the submarine as it gets interesting.

    Thanks for reading my post.

  3. [ES-EN] Top 10 on Netflix: Hunter Killer [Film Review]@joheredia211298d

    Hunter Killer

    [English Version]

Sometimes I decide to see the top of popularity of Netflix, or simply enter the news section, recently I noticed that Hunter Killer is in that top of popularity (it still is at the time of this writing), this is a 2018 film that I had seen, but not in its entirety, I decided to play this movie because I wanted to see some Hollywood style action. It is a film that at the time of its release was recommended to me, however, I had not been able to appreciate it in its entirety on that occasion that it was being broadcast on television, so I decided to watch it again on Netflix to make an objective opinion on one of the "commercial" films in trend at the moment.

    Source

This film has certain traits similar to a French production I reviewed months ago called El Canto del Lobo, although apparently submarine stories usually carry a somewhat similar plot line. Hunter Killer carries that DNA that is perhaps found in these types of stories since the Cold War, in fact, the enemy of choice for these types of productions is Russia, accentuating that feeling about the conflict between east and west that viewers like so much.

    Synopsis:

To avoid a war between Russia and NATO at the hands of a Russian general, a submarine and an elite commando have the dangerous mission of rescuing the president of Russia to again take control of its armed forces.

    Source

    Film Analysis

The story is interesting, although it may seem cliché or trite, it seems to me that this type of story always has the potential to attract viewers, we all fear that an armed conflict escalates into a nuclear war, so having this context as a latent possibility is interesting for many of the viewers who like war productions.

This film dives into familiar waters, as Hollywood has accustomed us, such as the bravery and great leadership of the protagonist, an almost prophetic intuition and of course, a luck beyond logic that is accompanied by the sequences that will be shown in the film, however, despite all of the above, it does not mean that it is a totally disastrous film or that it is a total waste of time, I think it is a good film, as we will find what we are looking for, a plot and action very much in the American style.

    Source

That style is carried by a hero who in this case is played by Gerard Butler, he is the one in charge of the saving strategy of the planet, skipping what his companions or his superiors may think, with nothing to make him tremble his pulse before the pressures, as well as with a true patriotism on par with Captain America. It's that kind of character that many of us like in this kind of productions, as well as I mentioned, perhaps somewhat trite, but with a formula that still has an effect on viewers.

    On Earth

Certainly the film is not only covered from the submarine, the events in enemy territory also plays an important role within the narrative, as well as in the dose of action expected in the film, so we will meet a commando team that needs to perform the dangerous and unthinkable mission. The characters of this commando are the typical ones used for this type of narrative, however, it seems to me necessary for the plot and not to dive into the hole of monotony that involves seeing a group of subjects inside a submarine. In general terms, this elite team gives us good scenes of shooting and action that complements the war narrative, so it seems to me a success despite the cliché that may mean.

    Source

    Something Curious

It is inevitable to make comparisons when the film tells us "president of Russia", we already know who he is and how he looks in real life, however, the actor who plays that specific character is totally different, now, what is really curious is that one of the captains looks very similar to the current president of Russia, one of those military who receive orders and who leads a group armed to the teeth of Russian military, it caused me quite curious and in particular I think it was premeditated, it is very coincidental and I'm not lying, it caused me some laughter that detail.

    Special Effects

For a 2018 film, the special effects are not very good, sometimes it seems that we are watching special effects from the early 2000's or a couple of years before. Although the producers undoubtedly saved money on this technical work, the film did not need a lot of special effects to keep the attention, since the film is sustained in its narrative with a fast pace, in combination with the appearances of its characters that were decently interpreted.

    Source

    Rating

    7.0 ⭐️

    Final Opinion

In my opinion, the entertainment is assured with this film that goes down a well known path of the industry, shouting Hollywood everywhere, however, the film does not go beyond the typical American traditionalist script full of heroism and patriotism, as I mentioned, it is a trite formula, but at the same time effective, so it is a film that meets the dose of entertainment during the 120 minutes of footage it has.

In my opinion it is entertaining, it has the characteristics of a good submarine and action film, although if I had to choose between this American film and the French one called Wolf Song, I would say that the European production is superior for introducing us to an extraordinary hearing ability of one of the young men in charge of the sonar, that characteristic that we could say "unusual" gives it, in my opinion, a little more value than the typical American script.

    Source

    Do I recommend it?

Yes, although perhaps we know what will happen, we will also be assured of the entertainment that many of us are accustomed to from a very young age, although it is not a production for a relatively important award, I think it meets our entertainment demands, especially those commercial productions that we want to see from time to time, I recommend it.

Thank you for your reading, until next time

(Hunter Killer, 2018)@panza2722d

    Hunter1.jpg IMG

    Hunter2.jpg IMG

  5. Hunter Killer - Movie Review@coldsteem2793d

After seeing the blockbusters released over the past couple of weeks, I was down to several second-tier films to choose from yesterday. There are a couple I just don't care to see, which left few options. I settled on the latest Gerard Butler film, Hunter Killer. The movie has a Tom Clancy vibe with a stomach-able 7.0 rating on IMDb currently. With two films left on my AMC AList subscription, I had to choose one, so Hunter Killer it was.

Joe Glass (Gerard Butler) is not your typical Annapolis-class Captain. Glass came up through the ranks, spending his entire career on submarines. He is appointed by Admiral John Fisk (Common) to command a submarine that will soon be engaged in a game of cat and mouse with the Russians. A coup in Russia leads to the sinking of a US sub. Glass is sent to respond while a team of Navy SEALs are deployed to get eyes and ears on the ground to determine what is happening. As the coup becomes evident, Glass must figure out how to avert World War III. The SEALs are sent to rescue the Russian president, Zakarin (Alexander Diachenko). A daring rescue attempt, a US ship in Soviet waters and the US Fleet heading toward Russia have the world positioned on the brink of war. It will take nerves of steel, a lot of trust and a little bit of luck to avoid triggering all out war.

Hunter Killer is a bit far-fetched. It is convoluted and leaves quite a bit to chance. At the same time, the film was action-packed and intriguing. I was engaged with the film even when it felt like a knock off Tom Clancy. The characters were a bit flat, particularly the XO (Carter MacIntyre), who is meant to add a dimension of stress to the situation. His character came off as lacking credibility. The story had great pacing and an interesting narrative arc. The film set up some nice fight sequences both on land as well as on sea. It was engaging enough to hold my interest and entertain me. It could have been much worse.

Hunter Killer was adapted from a book called Firing Point written by Don Keith and George Wallace, who was a submarine commander in real life. Wallace lent credibility to the story, which was laced with naval language and customs. I wasn't paying that close attention to the lexicon, as it wasn't woven into the script with any excess. But there were times where the hand of an actual naval commander was evident. As a Marine veteran, I am ingrained with the vernacular of the navy. So some of it may have slipped past my conscious mind as well. The casting for the film was interesting. I'm not a big fan of Gerard Butler. He has done some decent films I have reviewed on Steemit: Den of Thieves, Coriolanus and Geostorm are among the films I have reviewed. Butler was solid in this role. Oldman was an interesting choice for the Joint Chiefs of Staff (considering he is British). I wasn't loving Common as Rear Admiral Fisk. The casting of the Navy SEALs was solid. They seemed legit, although their dialogue was a bit flat. The casting was solid enough to carry this film and create some tension and strong action sequences.

The MPAA rated Hunter Killer with an R rating. There are several executions and numerous battle scenes. The battle scenes are pretty intense and mildly bloody. I think that was the primary factor in this rating. The film also had some strong language including an F-bomb from the Russian sub commander. But primarily, the rating seemed to be tied to the contextual violence which is prevalent throughout the film. As a military-themed film, war violence is expected. The Russian coup also included violence. All of the violence was contextual and possibly less gory than your average first-person shooter video game. For that reason, I think I would suspend attaching an age rating to this film. It wasn't the type of film that causes nightmares and the violence makes sense within the story. The film has a run time of two hours, two minutes. It honestly felt shorter than that. A good sign.

Hunter Killer is imperfect. The dialogue is off at times, the story is contrived and the idea is far-fetched. But I enjoyed it. As pure entertainment, the film offered strong pacing, an interesting concept and great action sequences. The combination of air and land maneuvers added a bit of flavor to the film as well. The political aspects of the story felt stilted at times, but overall, I found I enjoyed the action. Ultimately, that is the reason I go to the theater. To be entertained. At its core, Hunter Killer was entertaining. It felt derivative, but it also had value in the story it offered. I am in agreement with IMDb. Worth a matinee viewing. 7/10.

  6. HUNTER KILLER Movie Review!@filotasriza32797d

    Another week another movie!

Wow it's the third week in a row that i am watching a movie in the Cinema! I just came back, feeling  a bit sleepy but i need to write down my review for the future generations that will read this! Also, because everything is fresh in my mind and probably tomorrow i may miss some things.

    Let's Get Started!

    General Info

The film is directed by Donovan Marsh and is considered an action thriller, although i would just say it's plain action. It's a film that's for people above 15 though, so that must mean something :P. The main stars of the show are Leonidas.... i meant Gerard Butler, Gary Oldman, Common, Linda Cardellini among others! The whole film is based on a 2012 novel by George Wallace and Don Keith

    Plot

The whole plot starts when 2 submarines, one American and one Russian play "hide and seek" and end up getting destroyed somehow. Now America sends another submarine called Hunter Killer to find out what exactly happened. The incident happened near Russia so as you can imagine if they can't determine the cause of the destruction that can even mean war. For that purpose they sent Joe Glass (Gerard Butler) to investigate.

At the same time near that area there is a Russian marine base in where the Russian President has a meeting that soon turns into a coup. Joe Glass soon discovers that the Russian submarine had been sabotaged while the Americans discover about the coup (cause they have eyes everywhere)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnP_z3qXDCQ

    trailer

They decide to sent a Navy Seals team to that base to save the President in order to avoid a possible war and the escape route in no other than the submarine. Joe Glass also realizes that there are some survivors in that Russian submarine and decide to save them. One of the survivors is the captain of the Russian submarine that had been sabotaged as i mentioned earlier.

So we have a film that splits between what the submarine is doing, what the Navy Seal are doing and what happens at the american HQ

    My Thoughts

    Positives

The fight scenes are amazing and get ready to see a lot of action going on, not only with guns that the Navy Seals are using but with torpedoes and heavy artillery from war ships. Also, they have paid close attention to the the details of the submarine both the outside as well as the inside. There were some moments when the "huge guns" took place that i felt and odd satisfaction like those that you watch in YouTube videos cutting slices of butter and stuff! :P

The acting contrary to what they say is pretty good and makes you feel sorry about the characters and what they've been though and at the end you feel like you won too! Gary Oldman is a hidden gem in this movie as i believe nobody played that much attention to him but his acting was marvelous and to the point. (even though some critics disagree with this)

The number 1 positive for me was that there was a sense of brotherhood and humanity. All these people are soldiers and they have to follow orders, orders that most of the times may not agree with and we are talking about orders like killings. In the film though it shows that it just need a person to change that and make things right and a chain will follow!

Likewise there is a sense of brotherhood between comrades. Trust plays a big role in life and it has huge impact in army cause basically your life depend on the people you have next to you. Many times in the film we get to see this kind of trust between comrades it is just beautiful.

    Negatives

There are 2 negatives i see. The first one is that watching this film you gonna say "this is not gonna work in real life" and you will be completely right. In order all of these to happen with that success rate everyone needs to have lvl up the luck skill to maximum. The second one is that this film is about explosions, bigger explosions, bigger guns and brotherhood so it's possible all he women that are watching it to not feel the same as men or don't get some things. The same can apply to some men that haven't been in army yet!

All in All i will rate it with 7.5/10
