Judas and the Black Messiah (2021), segundo largometraje del cineasta norteamericano Shaka King, es una película dura, de esas que se encargan de mostrar los trapos sucios de la sociedad.
La película está basada en una historia real, el asesinato a mansalva, con premeditación y alevosía, del joven dirigente de los Panteras Negras, Fred Hampton (interpretado por Daniel Kaluuya), un muchacho afro descendiente de veintiún años, que a los ojos del director del FBI para aquel momento (1968), el señor Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen), era un peligro para la seguridad nacional de un sector de la sociedad norteamericana.
La historia transcurre en la ciudad de Chicago a finales de los sesenta. Allí William O'Neal (interpretado por Lakeith Stanfield), es un delincuente afro descendiente de poca monta, sin mayores inquietudes políticas y cuyo modo de vida es el robo de vehículos. Su “modus operandi” es muy sencillo, ingenioso y eficaz; se hace pasar por un agente del FBI, ubica un carro que le guste, aborda al dueño, le informa que el auto está denunciado como robado, logra que le den las llaves del vehículo y se va con él.
Una noche las cosas no le salen bien y es capturado por la policía de la ciudad, pero al encontrarle la falsa identificación policial lo remiten al FBI. Allí lo recibe el agente Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons) quien le informa que por sus delitos es candidato a una condena superior a los quince años. Sin embargo, le ofrece un trato, le conmutan el tiempo de prisión si acepta infiltrarse en la organización de los Panteras Negras con la finalidad de espiar a su presidente, el joven Fred Hampton.
William acepta la oferta del FBI, se convierte en informante y utiliza toda su astucia para lograr meterse en el círculo más íntimo de los allegados al dirigente de los Panteras Negras, una situación que lo mantuvo en la cuerda floja, ya que en varias oportunidades estuvo a punto de ser descubierto, pero siempre logró salir bien librado.
Gracias a los datos suministrados por William el FBI logró dar unos cuantos golpes a la organización de los Panteras Negras, capturando y dando de bajas a miembros importantes de la organización.
Con lo que si no contaba el informante es que una vez que has aceptado este tipo de tratos no hay forma de poderlos terminar. Las exigencias del agente Mitchell cada vez eran mayores y al final Will fue una pieza más en el fatídico desenlace de la vida de Hampton.
Una de las cosas que me llamó la atención en la película fue la excelente ambientación de una organización de tipo marxista lograda por el director Shaka King, se ve que tuvo una buena documentación. Lo presentado en pantalla recoge la esencia de estas organizaciones. El tipo de discusiones dogmáticas que se dan en su interior, los métodos de reclutamiento, la formación de los militantes, y el trato de tipo marcial, se corresponden con la realidad de ese tipo de organizaciones políticas.
Esas escenas de la “vida del partido” resonaban mucho en mí, puesto que en mi juventud tuve una experiencia de ese tipo, y mis vivencias en las organizaciones de izquierda de la Caracas de los años setenta eran muy parecidas a la que vi en la película. Nada raro por cierto, puesto que todas las organizaciones revolucionarias de izquierda se han guiado por acartonados y parecidos guiones.
En la película se presenta la pestilencia y el perfume. Los personajes desarrollados en el guión no son completamente malos, ni completamente buenos, son como cualquiera. Pueden hacer cosas muy malas, como la delación, la manipulación, e incluso el asesinato, pero el director se cuida de no presentarlos como monstruos ni anormales. Sí son personas profundamente equivocadas que ceden a la ira y al miedo, que se transforman como consecuencia del efecto de las ideologías y las creencias.
El joven Hampton, quien al final fue una de las víctimas, alimentaba un profundo odio hacia los que consideraba sus opresores y deseaba su eliminación física. ¿Infundado esta rabia atávica? No. Su gente ha vivido una larga historia de opresiones y maltratos que a esta fecha, marzo de 2022, no ha desaparecido; siguen sufriendo humillaciones y vejaciones de todo tipo, en la sociedad que se declara la más democrática. Sin embargo, responder el odio con el odio, solo es alimento para una confrontación que se puede extender por los siglos de los siglos. Sobre los cimientos de la violencia solo se puede construir violencia.
El agente Roy, desde la otra acera, la de los privilegiados, también llega a los extremos impulsado por un miedo irracional hacia el que es diferente. Pero al igual que Hampton son personas capaces de sentir amor, que tienen sus familias, sus esposas, sus hijos...
Entonces. ¿Dónde está el problema? ¿Por qué no pueden pensar en vivir con armonía? La película nos da dos pistas para entender el por qué de esta enfermedad social, de odio, miedo e intolerancia. Una, el ejercicio de un poder descontrolado que puede hacer lo que le dé la gana. El señor Hoover, en la cúspide del FBI, puede usar la manipulación y el chantaje para amedrentar a sus agentes y presionarlos de tal modo que se ubiquen ellos mismos al margen de la ley.
Ahora bien, ese ejercicio ilimitado de un poder enfermo es posible porque falla una parte vital en la vida social: la justicia. Y este es el otro aspecto que el director nos muestra en el film para entender por qué una sociedad puede alimentar tanta intolerancia. Si la justicia no funciona y no cumple su función de ser equitativa y ciega, pues la gente se ve forzada a defenderse como mejor pueda. En tal situación las convenciones sociales se derrumban y le queda el paso libre a la ley de la selva.
A mi modo de ver la película es bastante equilibrada, presenta situaciones que afectan la vida de millones de personas. Claro que se enfoca en los graves efectos que produce la discriminación, algo que no tiene sentido que siga existiendo en la sociedad actual.
Es triste ver cómo esos hechos presentados hace más de cincuenta años se siguen repitiendo con frecuencia. Las raíces de la intolerancia y el odio parecen ser profundas y resistentes. Y no se perfila en el horizonte que las discriminaciones vayan a desaparecer. Sí hemos avanzado un poco en lograr una pizca más de justicia, pero solo eso una pizca más.
Me gustó mucho el retrato del liderazgo presentado en la película. Es impresionante como un muchacho de apenas veintiún años puede convertirse en una amenaza seria para un orden social. Claro, el joven Hampton no era un muchacho cualquiera. Era una de esas personas que tienen un gran carisma y una presencia imponente, que sabía encontrar la manera de conectar con las personas. En su corta vida logró la proeza de unificar los diferentes movimientos de resistencia de las minorías, por eso fue que se convirtió en amenaza, por su capacidad para establecer alianzas. Quizá algunos de sus objetivos eran cuestionables, y sobre todo su insistencia en la lucha armada, pero sin duda fue un gran líder.
En el plano actoral hay cuatro actuaciones muy sobresalientes. Daniel Kaluuya, se crece en su personaje de Fred Hampton. Desarrolla una caracterización poderosa, creíble. Es impresionante la fuerza y la convicción con que anima las arengas a sus seguidores, son mítines llenos de energía y donde el actor empatiza con las audiencias.
Otra gran actuación es la de Lakeith Stanfield, su papel de traidor lo vive como un gran drama personal. En toda la película nos va transmitiendo la angustia de vivir con la carga de haber tomado la decisión equivocada. Es un hombre entrampado que no pudo encontrar la forma de escapar del infierno en que se metió.
Jesse Plemons, el agente Roy es un hombre que se debate entre sus convicciones morales y el mantenimiento de su status. A medida que avanza la película va cediendo a la presión de sus superiores para convertirse en un ser sin escrúpulos, que no vacila en chantajear de la manera más vil a su informante.
Dominique Fishback, Deborah, la compañera de Hampton, nos deja un papel conmovedor. Al principio su intención es tratar de suavizar la impetuosa personalidad de Hampton, ella, amante de la poesía, no entiende que se tenga que actuar con violencia, no comparte que se quite la vida a otros en nombre de un ideal. Pero aún con esa diferencia de perspectivas decide unir su vida al joven líder. Luego, la fuerza de los hechos la hicieron tomar posturas más radicales. What the informant did not count on is that once you have accepted this type of deal there is no way to terminate it. Agent Mitchell's demands became increasingly greater and in the end Will was one more piece in the fateful outcome of Hampton's life.
One of the things that caught my attention in the film was the excellent setting of a Marxist type organization achieved by director Shaka King, you can see that he had a good documentation. What is presented on screen captures the essence of these organizations. The type of dogmatic discussions that take place within them, the recruitment methods, the training of militants, and the martial-like treatment, correspond to the reality of this type of political organizations.
These scenes of "party life" resonated very much in me, since in my youth I had such an experience, and my experiences in the leftist organizations of Caracas in the seventies were very similar to what I saw in the film. Nothing strange, by the way, since all the revolutionary leftist organizations have been guided by stiff and similar scripts.
The film presents the stench and the perfume. The characters developed in the script are neither completely bad, nor completely good, they are just like anyone else. They can do very bad things, such as snitching, manipulation, and even murder, but the director is careful not to present them as monsters or abnormal. They are deeply misguided people who give in to anger and fear, who are transformed as a result of the effect of ideologies and beliefs.
Young Hampton, who was ultimately one of the victims, nurtured a deep hatred for those he considered his oppressors and desired their physical elimination. Was this atavistic rage unfounded? No. His people have lived through a long history of oppression and mistreatment that to this date, March 2022, has not disappeared; they continue to suffer humiliations and humiliations of all kinds, in the society that claims to be the most democratic. However, to respond to hatred with hatred is only food for a confrontation that can extend for ever and ever. Violence can only be built on the foundations of violence.
Agent Roy, from the other side of the street, that of the privileged, also goes to extremes driven by an irrational fear of those who are different. But like Hampton they are people who are capable of feeling love, who have their families, their wives, their children...
So where is the problem, why can't they think about living in harmony? The film gives us two clues to understand why this social disease of hatred, fear and intolerance. One, the exercise of an uncontrolled power that can do whatever it wants. Mr. Hoover, at the top of the FBI, can use manipulation and blackmail to intimidate his agents and pressure them in such a way that they place themselves outside the law.
Now, this unlimited exercise of a sick power is possible because a vital part of social life fails: justice. And this is the other aspect that the director shows us in the film to understand why a society can feed so much intolerance. If justice does not work and does not fulfill its function of being fair and blind, then people are forced to defend themselves as best they can. In such a situation, social conventions collapse and the law of the jungle takes over.
In my opinion, the film is quite balanced, presenting situations that affect the lives of millions of people. Of course, it focuses on the serious effects of discrimination, something that makes no sense to continue to exist in today's society.
It is sad to see how those facts presented more than fifty years ago are still frequently repeated. The roots of intolerance and hatred seem to be deep and resilient. And there is no sign on the horizon that discrimination is going to disappear. We have made some progress in achieving a little more justice, but only a little more.
I really liked the portrayal of leadership presented in the film. It is impressive how a boy of just twenty-one can become a serious threat to a social order. Of course, young Hampton was not just any boy. He was one of those people who had great charisma and a commanding presence, who knew how to find a way to connect with people. In his short life he managed the feat of unifying the different minority resistance movements, which is why he became such a threat, because of his ability to establish alliances. Perhaps some of his objectives were questionable, especially his insistence on armed struggle, but he was undoubtedly a great leader.
On the acting level, there are four outstanding performances. Daniel Kaluuya, grows in his character of Fred Hampton. He develops a powerful, believable characterization. It is impressive the strength and conviction with which he encourages the harangues to his followers, they are rallies full of energy and where the actor empathizes with the audiences.
Another great performance is that of Lakeith Stanfield, his role as a traitor is experienced as a great personal drama. Throughout the film he transmits the anguish of living with the burden of having made the wrong decision. He is a trapped man who could not find a way to escape from the hell he got himself into.
Jesse Plemons, Agent Roy is a man torn between his moral convictions and maintaining his status. As the film progresses, he gives in to pressure from his superiors to become an unscrupulous being, who does not hesitate to blackmail his informant in the most vile way.
Dominique Fishback, Deborah, Hampton's partner, gives us a touching role. At first her intention is to try to soften Hampton's impetuous personality, she, a lover of poetry, does not understand the need to act with violence, she does not share that the lives of others should be taken in the name of an ideal. But even with this difference of perspective, she decides to join her life to the young leader. Later, the force of events made her take more radical positions. With Hampton's death, Deborah and her son became defenders of his legacy, and to this day are leaders of movements fighting discrimination.
Judas and the Black Messiah is a great film that sheds light on one of the dramas of our time. I recommend it to you.
