Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to Kaya Satō, a 5-year-old girl who attends preschool and has the special ability to see ghosts or spirits that no one else around her can normally see. Kaya uses her abilities to protect her preschool classmates, since she not only sees ghosts but can also banish them in an instant. However, since she is the only person who sees these things, others—especially adults—consider her a problem child. Chie Hasumi, though, is a teacher and caregiver at the school where Kaya attends, and she is the only person who knows the truth.

Since it’s been a long time since I’ve reviewed a horror anime, I decided to take advantage of the fact that an anime of this style aired this past winter to bring it to you today. However, I’m not entirely convinced I should be talking to you about this anime, since it’s not one of the best I’ve seen in the horror genre. Lately, the supernatural theme has been closely tied to anime featuring comedy, fantasy, and action. These combinations have ended up overshadowing horror anime, where fear is supposed to be the main focus of these works.
But then again, we’re talking about an industry where generic content becomes popular, and action and comedy have become the key to success here. Although, of course, we’re talking about shōnen, which targets a very young audience, unlike seinen, which is aimed more at young adults. But even in the latter category, it’s hard to find horror anime that are enjoyable to watch or even modern. That’s why when an anime like Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary airs, I watch it and enjoy it as much as possible, even though there are a huge number of details worth discussing.
Como llevo mucho tiempo sin reseñar un anime de terror decidí aprovechar que en invierno de este año se emitió un anime de este estilo para traerlo a ustedes hoy. Sin embargo, no estoy completamente convencido de hablarles de este anime ya que no es de los mejores que haya visto del género de terror. Últimamente el tema de lo sobrenatural ha estado muy ligado a animes con comedia, fantasía y acción. Estas combinaciones terminaron opacando este tipo de animes de terror donde se supone que el miedo es el principal objetivo de estas obras.
Pero bueno, estamos hablando de una industria donde lo genérico se vuelve popular y la acción y la comedia se ha convertido en el centro del éxito aquí. Aunque, bueno, estamos hablando del shōnen que es un público muy infantil, a diferencia del seinen que está dirigido más a jóvenes adultos. Pero aún en esta última categoría es difícil encontrar animes de terror que sean agradables de ver o siquiera que sean modernos. The anime starts off as innocent and heartwarming as possible—exactly what you’d expect from a story starring a girl who’s barely 5 years old. However, the standout aspect of this story is that this girl, named Kaya Satō, can see ghosts and is constantly dealing with and fighting them. Aside from that, the anime also blends comedy with a touch of mystery. While I’m a bit tired of the humor in anime that’s supposed to be horror, here they seem to strike a decent balance.
Well, not quite as much as I’d like, but then again, I don’t expect much from an anime starring a 5-year-old girl—I’ll say it again. We get a glimpse into Kaya’s daily life at her middle school, where she protects her classmates from supernatural entities that are constantly chasing them, while her teacher and guardian, Chie Hasumi, works with the other guardians to protect and defend her so she doesn’t get into any more trouble. We also meet one of Kaya’s “admirers,” Osamu Mob, who can also see ghosts and is a huge fan of the supernatural.
El anime inicia de lo más inocente y tierno posible, lo esperado de una historia protagonizada por una niña de apenas 5 años de edad. Sin embargo, el detalle destacable de esta historia es que dicha niña llamada Kaya Satō es alguien que puede ver fantasmas además de tratar y luchar con ellos todo el tiempo. Aparte de esto, el anime también posee una mezcla de comedia con algo de misterio. Si bien estoy un poco cansado del humor en animes que se suponen son de terror, aquí parece que logran equilibrar un poco las cosas.
O bueno, no tanto como me gustaría, pero tampoco espero mucho de un anime que tiene como protagonista a una niña de 5 años, repito. Conocemos la vida diaria de Kaya en su escuela preparatoria, protegiendo a sus compañeros de entidades sobrenaturales que constantemente los están persiguiendo mientras que su maestra y cuidadora Chie Hasumi la protege y defiende con los demás cuidadores para que no se meta más en problemas. También conocemos a un “admirador” de Kaya que también puede ver fantasmas es muy fan de lo sobrenatural llamado Osamu Mob.

However, I don't know why they make the big guy Mob the focus of half the jokes in this anime that involve bullies or similar misunderstandings. The anime also falls short by somewhat idolizing the main character, who I think acts much more mature than she should for her young age. But anyway, the other half of the jokes or funny moments in this anime are mostly simple, innocent jokes involving kids playing or teasing each other. A good portion of the episodes in this anime have a tone and pace that don’t seem all that dark or serious.
But in reality, there’s a portion of the remaining episodes that have that dark and eerie tone you’d really expect from a horror anime. You know, terrifying moments that are much more elaborate than just a simple ghost appearing or haunting a preschooler. We see this in those moments where we gradually get to know Kaya’s family, the Ebisumori clan. To avoid giving away too many spoilers, I’ll just say that all the lore we’re given about Kaya’s family is among the most disturbing aspects of this anime. From curses to supernatural and downright terrifying entities.
Sin embargo, no sé por qué utilizan al grandulón de Mob como el centro de la mitad de los chistes que tiene este anime relacionado a acosadores o malentendidos similares. También el anime peca en endiosar de cierta forma a la protagonista, quien considero tiene mucha más madurez de lo que debería a su corta edad. Pero bueno, de resto, la otra mitad de chistes o momentos graciosos que tiene este anime son mayormente chistes simples e inocentes de niños jugando o burlándose entre sí. Una buena parte de los episodios de este anime tienen un tono y ritmo que no pareciera ser tan oscuro y serio.
Pero en realidad hay una parte del resto de episodios que tienen ese tono oscuro y tenebroso que uno realmente espera de un anime de terror. Ya saben, momentos terroríficos mucho más elaborados que un simple fantasma que se aparece o acosa a una niña de preescolar. Esto lo vemos es en esos momentos donde conocemos de a poco a la familia de Kaya, el clan Ebisumori. Para no darles tantos spoilers, solo les diré que todo el lore que nos dan relacionado a la familia de Kaya es de lo más perturbador que tiene este anime. Desde maldiciones hasta entidades sobrenaturales y bastante terroríficas.

Even the “origin” of Kaya’s abilities and everything related to her birth is among the most disturbing things out there. Personally, I think this is the only thing that really caught my attention out of everything I saw in this anime. It’s interesting that not only does the anime revolve around the different cases Kaya seeks to solve, but her own origin and family turn out to be the most disturbing and intense paranormal case in the series itself. I don’t think it’s the most disturbing or terrifying thing I’ve seen in an anime in recent years, but it’s not half bad either.
That said, it’s not an anime I’d personally recommend everyone watch, even though it features a young girl as the protagonist. I’m not even sure if true horror fans will end up liking this anime, despite its interesting premise. Honestly, when I finally got around to watching it, it suddenly reminded me of a similar anime featuring a child protagonist who also sees ghosts and fights them. The anime I’m talking about is called Dark Gathering, and it’s one I definitely recommend watching if you’re looking for some supernatural horror with action.

Personalmente opino que esto es lo único que me llamó realmente la atención de todo lo que llegué a ver en este anime. No pienso que sea lo más perturbador o aterrador que he llegado a ver en un anime en estos últimos años, pero tampoco está tan mal.
Igual tampoco es un anime que personalmente recomiendo a todo el mundo ver, sin importar que tenga como protagonista a una niña. Incluso no sé si los verdaderos fans del terror lleguen a gustarle este anime, a pesar de tener una premisa interesante. Honestamente cuando la llegué a ver de repente me recordó un anime parecido de una protagonista infantil que también ve fantasmas y lucha contra ellos. El anime del cual les hablo se llama Dark Gathering y es un anime que definitivamente sí les recomiendo ver si lo que buscan es algo de terror sobrenatural con acción.

Pero al final es de esperarse con un anime dirigido a un público adolescente, al final y al cabo. También tiene personajes que pueden llegar a llamar la atención debido a su aspecto, apariencia o su forma de actuar; como lo es el caso de Osamu Mob. Pero dicho personaje también llega a transmitir cierta sensación de incomodidad en muchas de las escenas en las que él aparece.
También tiene personajes que simplemente imponen temor o perturbación con su presencia, como lo es el caso de la madre de Kaya quien nos la introduce de una forma bastante llamativa. Pero al final tampoco es un personaje que llegue a acaparar gran parte de la pantalla, es más como un “jefe final” o algo parecido. No voy a negar que me entretuve un poco viendo este anime y más con todo lo relacionado al clan Ebisumori. Pero hasta ahí, ya que el mismo anime no intenta darnos tantos giros de trama impactantes ni un final que te vuele la cabeza ni mucho menos.

What I disliked most about this anime—and what made it the hardest for me to bring myself to watch it—is its audiovisual presentation. While the studio in charge doesn’t have much experience with animation, it doesn’t seem like they put much effort into this project. The character designs—especially those of the ghosts and supernatural entities—barely catch the eye. The art style is somewhat simple and lacking in detail. The animation is barely noticeable; you can only just make out some basic motion effects. The same goes for the visual effects, which aren’t anything to write home about.
While it features dark tones and a decent use of light and shadow, the anime’s color palette varies quite a bit depending on the scene. There are colorful, cheerful, and funny moments, but there are also dark, eerie scenes filled with tension. The sound effects aren’t too bad either—quite the opposite, in fact, as they’re even used to set the mood and build tension in certain horror scenes. Still, it’s nothing to write home about, which is also true of the soundtrack used in this anime, which doesn’t really stand out either.
Personally, I give it a 7/10 rating in terms of the supernatural horror and comedy genres.
Lo que más me llegó a disgustar de este anime y es lo que más me costó hacer que lo vea es su apartado audiovisual. Si bien el estudio a cargo no tiene mucha experiencia animando, aquí no pareciera que se hayan esforzado mucho. Los diseños de los personajes, sobre todo el de los fantasmas y entidades sobrenaturales apenas llaman la atención. El estilo de dibujo es un tanto simple y pobre en cuanto a detalles se refiere. La fluidez casi ni se siente, sino que apenas y se pueden presenciar ciertos efectos de movimiento básicos. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos visuales, los cuales no son la gran cosa.
Si bien tiene sus tonos oscuros y un uso decente de las luces y sombras, la paleta de colores que tiene el anime siempre llega a variar bastante dependiendo de las escenas. Hay momentos coloridos, alegres y graciosos, pero también hay escenas oscuras, tenebrosas y repletas de tensión. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están tan mal, más bien lo contrario al ser utilizadas incluso para ambientar y generar tensión en ciertas escenas de terror. Aún así, no es nada del otro mundo, lo cual sucede también con la banda sonora que utilizan en este anime que tampoco llega a destacarse demasiado.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de terror sobrenatural y comedia.
