This series, so popular back in the late 90s, set a precedent and became an icon in police and crime series. I don't know about you, but in my case, every time I hear the intro, it takes me right back to that time. So, of all the series I watch, this is the only one whose intro I never skip 😄. It's not just that it makes me nostalgic, but the sound of the clarinet is extremely relaxing for me.
Esta serie tan popular por allá en finales de los años 90, marcó un precedente y se volvió un ícono en series policiacas y de crímenes, yo no se a ustedes pero en mi caso cada vez que escucho la intro me remonta mentamente a esa época, así que de todas las series que veo esta es la única a la que jamás le salto la intro 😄 es que no solome produuce nostalgia sino que el sonido del clarinete me resulta extremadamente relajante.
To summarize this series for anyone who hasn't seen it before, it won't take too long. Basically, it's about an elite investigative unit dedicated to solving crimes, mostly of a sexual nature. The characters often become emotionally involved with the victims and take their work very seriously. The episodes generally aren't connected, so you can watch any one at random.
Para resumirle esta serie a cualquiera que no la haya visto antes, no me llevaré demasiado tiempo, basicamente se trata de una unidad de elite de investigación, que se dedica a tratar de resolver crímenes, en su mayoría de orden sexual, los personajes muchas veces se involucran emocionalmente con las víctimas y toman muy en serio su trabajo. Por lo general los capítulos de la serie no mantienen un margen de continuidad, así que puedes ver cualquiera al azar.
I like the series for many reasons. First, from the very beginning, when the crime is presented, you feel powerless, and as you gather more information (along with the protagonists), you start forming theories in your mind. Often, the plot twists regarding the suspects are truly impressive. I really like the approach they take to the story, emphasizing the psychological impact on the surviving victims. This is probably because most of the cases are inspired in some way by real-life events, which helps the audience be prepared for situations that could happen to anyone.
Me gusta la serie por muchas razones, en primer lugar desde el inicio cuando se te presenta el crimen, sientes impotencia y a medida que vas obteniendo más datos (junto a los protagonistas) vas armando conjeturas en tu mente, y a menudo suceden unos giros de trama con respecto a los sospechosos que son francamente imprecionantes. The main investigative duo (Benson and Stabler) form a perfect match, complementing each other exceptionally well, as each serves as a counterbalance to the other. Olivia Benson is an outstanding detective, possessing a high level of empathy for victims and striving to understand them in every way possible. She is often the ideal counterbalance to Elliot Stabler, who is more explosive and visceral when faced with particularly sarcastic and cruel criminals.
La pareja principal de investigadores (Benson y Stabler) forman un match perfecto que se complementa muy bien, porque cada unos sirve como contención del otro. Today I would like to review this gem from the late 90's that is today a classic, in fact since I found it recently on Netflix I have not stopped watching its episodes because they are full of adrenaline and feeling. For those who do not know what it is about, these stories take place in New York City in which we see the whole process of investigation and other police processes about crimes committed in that city, even some of them are based on real crimes. The Special Victims Unit is almost entirely in charge of crimes of sexual nature such as abuse and trafficking, the officers are commanded by Captain Cragen who despite being a man in appearance rude and devoid of emotions is very thoughtful and empathetic, only wants the victims to get justice.
Hoy me gustaría reseñar esta joya de finales de los años 90 que es hoy en día todo un clásico, de hecho desde que la encontré recientemente en Netflix no he dejado de ver sus episodios pues están cargados de adrenalina y sentimiento. Para quienes no saben de qué se trata, estas historias se desarrollan en la ciudad de Nueva York en la cuál vemos todo el proceso de investigación y demás procesos policiales sobre crímenes cometidos en esa ciudad, incluso algunos de ellos están basados en crímenes reales. La Unidad de Víctimas Especiales se encarga casi en su totalidad de crímenes de índole sexual como abusos y trata de blanca, los oficiales están al mando del Capitán Cragen quien a pesar de ser un hombre en apariencia rudo y carente de emociones es muy reflexivo y empático, solo quiere que las víctimas obtengan justicia.
First of all, I would like to tell you about this intro. Won't you tell me that I am the only one who feels terribly attracted to it? In addition to fulfilling its role of introducing you to the police scene, it appeals to nostalgia because it immediately takes you back to that time in the late 90s.
En primer lugar me gustaría hablarles de esa intro ¿No me dirán que soy el único que se siente terriblemente atraído por ella? es que además de cumplir su rol de introducirte en el panorama policiaco, apela a la nostalgia pues inmediatamente te traslada a esa época de finales de los años 90
I honestly consider that one of the best worked aspects of this series are the stories and character development, they are done in such a way that we can see how the victims go through various processes, sometimes internal, where they try to heal but it is impossible for them, sometimes they feel very afraid and end up protecting the aggressor to prevent him from hurting them again, it is something that is perfectly attached to reality, not always the cases are easily solved or the victims collaborate in an axiomatic way, on the other hand the performances are very convincing, so much that you end up empathizing with the victims from the beginning, feeling their pain almost in their own flesh, and when they are cases based on real life they are much more visceral .
Honestamente considero que uno de los aspectos mejor trabajados de esta serie son las historias y el desarrollo de personajes, los hacen de una manera tal que podemos ver como las víctimas atraviesan diversos procesos, a veces internos, donde intentan sanar pero les resulta imposible, a veces sienten mucho miedo y terminan protegiendo al agresor para evitar que vuelva a lastimarlos, es algo que se apega perfectamente a la realidad, no siempre los casos se resuelven fácilmente o las víctimas colaboran de forma axiomática, por otro lado las actuaciones son muy convincentes, tanto que terminas empatizando con las víctimas desde el inicio, sintiendo su dolor casi en carne propia, y cuando son casos basados en la vida real son mucho más viscerales.
Perhaps among so many police series like C.S.I, Chicago PD or S.W.A.T the plot of this series may not seem to be that special, but it is not precisely the plot that is remarkable about it, but the way it is carried out and developed, which is wonderfully executed here. Each episode, its stories and continuity feel very natural and genuine, thanks to the way the script is written and also in the wonderful acting of the actors. Despite tackling sensitive issues, they do so with empathy and respect, showing the raw reality but without falling into morbidity.
Tal vez entre tantas series policiales como C.S.I, Chicago PD o S.W.A.T el argumento de esta serie no parezca ser tan especial, pero no es precisamente el argumento lo destacable de ella, sino la manera en que se lleva a cabo y se desarrolla, lo cual está maravillosamente ejecutado aquí. Cada episodio, sus historias y continuidad se sienten muy naturales y genuinas, gracias a la forma en la que está escrito el guion y también en la maravillosa interpretación de los actores. Pese a abordar temas delicados, lo hacen desdela empatía y el respeto, mostrando la cruda realidad pero sin caer en el morbo.
It has an interesting narrative and an excellent management of suspense, which in some scenes makes you have your soul in suspense, and that is precisely the charm that this series exerts on the audience and that has made it last over time, even making you feel part of the scene as a detective, building conjectures and hypotheses, getting it right sometimes and wrong other times.
Tiene una narrativa interesante y una excelente gestión del suspenso, lo cual provoca que en algunas escenas tengas el alma en vilo, y es ese precisamente el encanto que ejerce esta serie sobre la audiencia y que ha hecho que perdure en el tiempo, incluso haciendo que te sientas parte de la escena como un detective más, armando conjeturas e hipótesis, acertando algunas veces y errando otras.
As for my favorite character I would say it is Elliot Stabler because he is a very real character, that is, he is not the typical perfect cop, the caped hero, his biggest flaw is impulsiveness, he is extremely empathetic with his victims and constantly sees his own family reflected in it, which often has led him to make mistakes, use excessive force against an aggressor or exceed the limits of what is considered correct, but in my opinion this makes him a more human character and attached to reality.
En cuanto a mi personaje favorito yo diría que es Elliot Stabler porque es un personaje muy real, es decir, no es el típico policía perfecto, el héroe de capa, su mayor defecto es la impulsividad, es en extremo empático con sus víctimas y constantemente ve a su propia familia reflejada en ella, lo cuál muchas veces lo ha llevado a cometer errores, usar excesivamente la fuerza contra un agresor o rebasar los límites de lo que se considera correcto, pero en mi opinión esto lo hace ser un personaje más humano y apegado a la realidad.

NOTA: Este post aunque no tiene imagenes sensibles, si puede abarcar temas de ese estilo por el contexto de la propia serie.
Últimamente, he estado viendo la Ley y el Orden: Unidad de Víctimas Especiales con mi novia @lumpymoon desde la primer temporada y siendo una serie que empezó desde 1999 y que aún se encuentra en emisión, nos sirve como ejemplo de como han cambiado las leyes y perspectivas a través de todos estos años.
Justamente vamos viendo por la sexta temporada y uno de los más grandes cambios es él antes y después del acontecimiento del 11 de septiembre en los Estados Unidos y como ese suceso ocasiono muchos cambios en sus leyes y procedimientos que podemos ir notando a través de las menciones que se van dando durante la serie.
Pero también podemos notar ese contexto histórico y punto de vista de los casos que se pueden llegar a encontrar en la serie, tanto por los que están basados en hechos reales como los que son totalmente ficticios.
Además de los cambios no tan solo en las leyes y en como se juzga a las personas, por ejemplo el primer caso de un hombre acusando de violación a una mujer que termino perdiendo, pues eran incapaces de creer que un hombre no supiera defenderse siendo mas alto y fuerte.
De igual forma como los casos se han vuelto más tecnológicos, cambiando desde los simples secuestros y/o explotación de infantes, al hecho que estos ya pueden operar en internet sin la posibilidad de ser descubiertos tan fácilmente o incluso fuera del país. Viendo la evolución de los dispositivos de grabación tanto de audio como de video y de los propios celulares. Cosas que hoy se nos pueden hacer tan cotidianas como la intercomunicación instantánea o la popular "Only Fans" para esos tiempos podría ser grotesco, aunque no se mostrara nada sexual.
Por último, mencionar los casos como "el asesinato de Columbine" y como ha hecho que las escuelas de estados unidos tuvieran más seguridad (aunque no ha ayudado mucho) y las creencias de que los videojuegos causan violencia, dejando la moralidad en un estado abierto para que juzguemos nosotros mismos.
Es una serie que siento que vale la pena ver desde el inicio si es que te gustan las series de policías y que se mantiene vigente hoy en dia.

Today I will dedicate this article to talk about some of the reasons why you should give a chance to the longest running drama series (a few years on the air) , it is Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. I'm sure at some point you've heard of it or have had an eye on an episode, so if you've been wanting to watch it for a while, here's your chance to get to know a little about it before getting into its many seasons.
Law & Order responds to a franchise that has been dedicated to bring different titles related to various areas of crime, so far about seven in total: Special Victims Unit, LA, Organized Crime Unit, Criminal Intent, True Crimes, Trial Jury and of course, the one that started it all in 1990, Law & Order. SVU is set in New York City, in the 16th district where we witness how the detectives of the place try to solve crimes of a sexual nature. The characters Elliot, Olivia, Monch, Cassidy and Monique, under the command of Captain Donald Cragen, are involved.

El día de hoy dedicaré este artículo para hablar sobre algunas de las razones por las cuales deberías darle una oportunidad a la serie de drama de más larga duración (unos cuantos años al aire) , se trata de La Ley y el Orden: Unidad de Víctimas Especiales. Estoy segura que en algún momento habrán oído hablar de ella o le habrán echado un ojo a algún episodio, así que sí ya tenías un tiempo queriendo verla, está es tu oportunidad para conocer un poco sobre ella antes de adentrarse en sus numerosas temporadas ¡Comencemos!
La Ley y el Orden responde a una franquicia que se ha dedicado a traer distintos títulos relacionados a varias áreas del crimen, hasta el momento unos siete en total: La Unidad de Víctimas Especiales, LA, Unidad de Crimen Organizado, Intento Criminal, Crímenes Reales, Trial Jury y por supuesto, la que dió inicio a todo en 1990, La Ley y el Orden. La UVE está ambientada en la Ciudad de Nueva York, en el distrito 16 dónde presenciamos cómo los detectives del lugar intentan resolver delitos de índole sexual. En ellos participan los personajes Elliot, Olivia, Monch, Cassidy y Monique al mando del capitán Donald Cragen.
Simple plot, complex episodes: if there is one thing I appreciate in a TV series is that as the episodes progress, the level of quality is better than the previous one. The first episodes may make a certain impression but they have such an evolution that does not allow us a space to feel comfortable and calm. The problems are getting bigger and bigger. The constant tension that follows episode after episode only makes you want more and more about it. And even at a certain point, if you get lost at some point, you will lose the thread of the story because of how fast everything is moving forward. So, if you want to see something that will keep you on your toes, here it is.
Trama sencilla, episodios complejos: si hay algo que agradezco en una serie de televisión es que conforme se avanza en los episodios, el nivel de calidad sea mejor que el anterior. Los primeros episodios pueden causar cierta impresión pero tienen una evolución tal que no nos permite un espacio para sentirnos cómodos y tranquilos. Los problemas son cada vez mayores. La constante tensión que sigue episodio tras episodio solo hace que quieras más y más sobre ello. Y hasta en cierto punto, si te pierdes en algún momento, perderás el hilo de la historia por lo rápido que avanza todo. Así que, si quieres ver algo que te mantenga en vela, aquí lo tienes.
Well-balanced characters: It's enough to watch the first season to understand that it's not only about solving a problem (no isolated episodes) but how little by little these same problems begin to subdue the detectives. That kind of reality in a drama series that focuses on such perverse crimes, leaves no one indifferent. Where the characters are not impenetrable and indestructible heroes but are vulnerable and can even be corruptible. That makes us empathize with the detectives and the victims because they all want to reach an end; solve the case and let justice act. Even if they don't always come out well.
Personajes bien equilibrados: Basta con ver la primera temporada para entender que no solo se trata sobre la resolución de un problema (nada de episodios aislados) sino como poco a poco estos mismos problemas empiezan a someter a los detectives. Ese tipo de realidad en una serie de drama que se centra crímenes tan perversos, no deja indiferente a ninguno. Dónde los personajes no son unos héroes impenetrables e indestructibles sino que son vulnerables y hasta pueden ser corrompibles. Eso hace que empaticemos con los detectives y las víctimas pues todos quieren llegar a un fin; resolver el caso y dejar que la justicia actúe. Aunque no siempre salgan bien parados.
Not suitable for all audiences: if there is something we all agree on (or the vast majority) is that crimes of a sexual nature are inadmissible. Especially if we are talking about cases involving minors. That is why it is impossible not to be moved by the hard stories that episode after episode we witness. In some of them we feel happiness when the criminals pay but that is rarely the case. So for me, SVU stands out within the franchise for having the courage to tackle such complex issues in such an organic, non-morbid and objective way. It's simply a pretty clean piece of filmmaking.
No apto para todo público: si hay algo en lo que todos concordamos (o la gran mayoría) es que los crímenes de índole sexual son inadmisibles. Sobre todo si hablamos sobre casos que involucran a menores de edad. Por ello es imposible no sentirse conmovido con las historias tan duras que episodio tras episodio presenciamos. En algunos de ellos sentimos felicidad cuando los criminales pagan pero eso pocas veces suele ser así. Así que para mí, la UVE destaca dentro de la franquicia por tener la valentía de abordar temas tan complejos de una forma tan orgánica, nada morbosa y objetiva. Sencillamente es un trabajo cinematográfico bastante limpio.
Finally friends, I would like to highlight a few more things like the excellent performance of the cast, the script behind each episode and of course, the determination to last so many years on the air and still keep thousands of people awake. ¡Hola, gente de internet! ¿Qué mejor manera de iniciar el post, sino con la mejor intro de todos los tiempos? Hoy quiero hablarles de mi serie policial preferida y es La ley y el orden UVE.
I could start by talking about one of my favourite parts of this show: its soundtrack, just the intro alone gives me a thousand years of life hahaha. It's quite relaxing and has become an icon of the 90s. The rest of the OST is very well done and accompanies the scenes perfectly, giving context to the reactions and emotions that the actors want to transmit.
Podría comenzar hablando de una de mis partes preferidas de esta serie: su banda sonora, nada más la intro ya me da mil años de vida jajaja. Es bastante relajante y se ha vuelto un icono de los 90. El resto del OST está muy bien hecho y acompaña perfectamente las escenas, dando contexto a las reacciones y emociones que quieren transmitirnos los actores.
The photography is also very beautiful and well worked, although it doesn't have striking or reminiscent shots or palette of colours, they are well cared for and put the viewer in situation through its key elements such as lights, shadows, colour or filters.
La fotografía también es muy bonita y bien trabajada, si bien no tiene planos o paleta de colores llamativa o rememorativas, sí están bien cuidados y ponen en situación al espectador a través de sus elementos claves como lo son las luces, sombras, color o filtros.
We will now expand on two of the best aspects of the show: story and character development. Law & Order SVU chronicles the various cases of sexual abuse committed in New York City, and how the detectives in charge of the Special Victims Unit must try to solve them and catch the perpetrators.
Ahora nos extenderemos hablando de dos de los mejores aspectos de la serie: historia y desarrollo de personajes. La ley y el orden UVE relata los diferentes casos de abuso sexual cometidos en la ciudad de Nueva York, y como los detectives a cargo de la Unidad de Víctimas Especiales, debe intentar resolverlos y atrapar a los perpetradores.
While the plot of the show doesn't sound that special, it's not the plot that's so remarkable about it, but the way it's carried out and developed, and it does this perfectly. Each episode, its stories and continuity feel very natural and genuine, thanks to the way the script is written and also to the wonderful acting of the actors. Si bien el argumento de la serie no suena tan especial, no es precisamente el argumento lo destacable de ésta, sino el como se lleva a cabo y se desarrolla y esto lo hace perfectamente. Cada episodio, sus historias y continuidad se asienten muy naturales y genuinas, gracias a la forma en la que está escrito el guion y también en la maravillosa interpretación de los actores. Pese a abordar temas delicados, lo hacen muy bien, mostrando la cruda realidad pero sin ser desagradables o poco correctos en la ejecución, tal como explicaba en un post anterior que hace la serie coreana Voice (te dejo el link a mi review de esta serie por si sienten curiosidad):
The character development is incredible and the way they included new characters as the show progressed was excellent, so much so that it wasn't difficult for viewers to connect almost immediately with all of them.
El desarrollo de personajes es increíble y la manera en la que incluyeron a nuevos personajes a medida que la serie fue avanzando fue excelsa, tanto así que no fue difícil que los espectadores conectaran casi de inmediato con todos estos.
Now let's talk about my favourite characters. The show introduces us to diverse and well-developed characters, one of my favourites (and I think everyone's) is Olivia Benson:
Ahora pasaremos a hablar de mis personajes preferidos. La serie nos presenta a personajes variopintos y bastante bien desarrollados, una de mis preferidas (y creo que la de todo el mundo) es Olivia Benson:
Olivia is a rather complex character, she is the result of a rape conception (her father is her mother's rapist) and this motive (which was never hidden from her by her mother) led her to want to join the SVU. Olivia shows a lot of compassion, dedication and determination in her work and slowly works her way up the ranks to become captain of her unit. Olivia has clearly overcome her greatest traumas (having survived even kidnapping attempts) and uses them to learn and become even more determined, a clear reference to "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger".
Olivia es un personaje bastante complejo, es resultante de una concepción por violación (su padre es el violador de su madre) y este motivo (que nunca le fue ocultado por su madre) la orilló a querer unirse a la UVE. Olivia muestra mucha compasión, dedicación y determinación en su trabajo, y poco a poco va escalando hasta convertirse en capitana de su unidad. Olivia claramente ha superado sus traumas más grandes (ya que ha sobrevivido hasta intentos de secuestro) y los emplea para aprender y volverse más determinada aún, una clara referencia a "Lo que no te mata, te hace más fuerte".
She is undoubtedly a tenacious and strong-willed woman who is not intimidated by anyone, outgoing, outspoken and brutal in her opinions and it's for this reason that she is the unit's prosecutor and a very, very good one. Not only is she detailed with her cases to the point of wanting to witness the search warrants and forensic processes, but also her questions and confrontations in court are some of the best:
Es sin dudas una mujer tenaz y de carácter fuerte además de no dejarse intimidar por nadie, extrovertida, clara y brutal en sus opiniones y es por esta razón que es la fiscal de la unidad y una muy muy buena. No solo es detallista con sus casos hasta el punto de querer presenciar las ordenes de cateo y procesos forenses sino que también sus preguntas y confrontaciones en la corte son de las mejores:
Despite her rough and brutal personality, Casey is also very noble and empathetic, going to great lengths to ensure justice for the victims and even becoming quite involved in the process.
Pese a su personalidad ruda y brutal, Casey también es muy noble y empática, realizando lo imposible para asegurarle la justicia a las víctimas e incluso involucrándose bastante en el proceso.
Everything about this man catches my attention: he's Asian and handsome, very intelligent and cultured, and he's a psychiatrist <3 :3. Huang introduces himself to Olivia and Eliot with a lot of confidence and takes control of the situation immediately, which doesn't exactly please the detectives, yet this doesn't faze the psychiatrist who is in perfect control of his emotions and reactions.
Todo en este hombre llama mi atención: es asiático y guapo, muy inteligente y culto y además, es psiquiatra <3 :3. Huang se presenta a Olivia y Eliot con mucha seguridad y adueñándose del control de la situación de inmediato, lo que no precisamente agrada a los detectives, aún así, esto no perturba en lo absoluto al psiquiatra quien tiene perfecto control de sus emociones y reacciones.
Dr. Huang is quite empathetic and noble, always prioritising meticulous work to help build up clinical psychiatric profiles of the perpetrators and provide clues to help uncover the perpetrators, or extracting the motives of the crimes during the interrogations he conducts, resorting to clinical interview rather than interrogation as such, in this astute way, he can get the truth out of the perpetrators without them even realising it.
El Dr. Huang es bastante empático y noble, prioriza siempre hacer un trabajo meticuloso para ayudar a armar perfiles clínicos psiquiátricos de los perpetradores y facilitar pistas que ayuden a descubrirlo, o extrayendo los móviles de los crímenes durante los interrogatorios que hace, recurriendo a la entrevista clínica más que a un interrogatorio como tal, de esa astuta forma, puede sacarle la verdad a los perpetradores sin que estos mismos se den cuenta.
I find his dialogues highly interesting as I love psychiatry. Huang's quick analyses and diagnoses are always spot on and the detectives always take his opinions into account without complaint because of this. He is without a doubt an endearing character and one of the best in the show.
Sus diálogos me resultan altamente interesantes ya que me encanta la psiquiatría. Los análisis y diagnósticos veloces de Huang siempre suelen ser acertados y los detectives siempre toman en cuentas sus opiniones sin chistar debido a esto. Sin dudas en un personaje entrañable y uno de los mejores de la serie.
