  1. Memento Movie Review - When Memory Becomes Your Enemy!@reviewzzz498d

If you've never seen a movie that makes you feel lost in a good way, then you have to watch Memento. The movie starts and you don't understand anything, and every few scenes you pass, you discover that you still don't understand, but you can't stop watching. The whole idea is that the hero Leonard has a problem, his short-term memory was ruined due to an accident, and every ten minutes he forgets what he was doing. Imagine living your life like that? The disaster is that he is also looking for the one who killed his wife, and this journey has more than one trap and surprise that makes you not sure who is right and who is wrong.

The movie is made in a way that makes you feel the same way as the hero, the scenes go in reverse, meaning you start with the result and then discover how we got there. And every now and then you find yourself saying: "Ah, I see.. Wait wait, no, I'm lost again!", and director Christopher Nolan took advantage of this very well, and put you inside the hero's mind with pleasure.

As for the acting, Guy Pearce was great. You feel that he really doesn't remember anything, and you believe his destructive psychological state, especially when he thinks wrong things and acts on them. Although almost the entire movie revolves around him, the other characters like Teddy and Natalie have roles that are not simple, and each one of them has a role in the big mystery that is not easy to solve.

In short, Memento is not a movie to just play and eat popcorn, it is a movie that you have to focus on, and yet you may finish it while you are still not 100% sure what the truth is. But what is certain is that you will keep thinking about it for a long time after it ends, and that in itself is a great success for any movie.

If you like movies that play with your mind and make you feel like you're part of the puzzle, then Memento is a great choice, but if you like easy and clear movies, be careful... this movie won't spare you!

    My rating review ... (9 / 10)

  2. Memento(2000) || A Neo-noir Psychological Thriller@teknon647d

    Screenshot_20240919-165129_1.png

This film is one of those films that twists your brain into knots and leaves you staring at the screen after the credits roll, trying to make sense of what you just watched. Honestly, I had to watch it twice to properly piece the story together. Directed by Christopher Nolan, this 2000 neo-noir psychological thriller is as much a puzzle as it is a movie. It’s the kind of film that demands your full attention from the very first frame and makes you question everything you see, in the best way possible.

    Synopsis

    Screenshot_20240919-181707_1.png

The film follows Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), a man suffering from short term memory loss, on his quest to find the person responsible for his wife’s murder. The catch? He can’t make new memories, so every few minutes, he forgets everything that just happened. To cope with this, Leonard relies on a system of Polaroid pictures, notes, and tattoos on his body to remind him of the important facts he needs to remember.

    Screenshot_20240919-181841_1.png

The story is told in two distinct timelines: one that plays in reverse chronological order and one in black and white that runs forward. As these timelines converge, the mystery deepens, and Leonard’s investigation becomes more and more disorienting, for both him and the audience.

    My Review and Rating

Memento is an absolutely brilliant piece of filmmaking that plays with narrative structure in a way that very few films dare to do. Christopher Nolan essentially asks the audience to experience the story the same way Leonard does, without knowing what just happened. The film’s reverse storytelling forces you to piece together the mystery as you go and it’s an incredibly engaging way to pull the viewer into Leonard’s fractured world. Every new scene reveals something crucial, but since we’re moving backward, each revelation is also a twist on what you thought you knew.

    Screenshot_20240919-181751_1.png

Guy Pearce’s performance as Leonard is the glue that holds this complex narrative together. He’s both sympathetic and frustrating, as you watch him try to make sense of a world that keeps slipping through his fingers. There’s a tragic irony to his relentless pursuit of revenge, as you start to wonder if his inability to remember is protecting him from the truth he might not be ready to face. Pearce plays Leonard with a vulnerability that makes his plight feel both believable and heartbreaking.

Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano also deliver standout performances as Natalie and Teddy, two characters whose motivations and loyalties are constantly called into question. As Leonard’s only real connections in the world, they play key roles in his investigation but Nolan masterfully had me guessing as to whether they’re helping or manipulating him. Every interaction feels loaded with deception, making their characters just as mysterious as the plot itself.

Now, while Memento is undoubtedly a cinematic triumph, it’s not without a few quirks that might trip some viewers up. First, I'll address the elephant in the room: if you’re not paying attention, you’re going to get lost. This isn’t the kind of movie you can watch while scrolling through your phone or casually chatting with friends. If you blink, you’ll miss key details, and trust me, piecing the story together is hard enough even when you’re focused. I was almost frustrated but had to keep it going. In a way, the film is almost too smart for its own good. You practically need a degree in film studies to keep up with Nolan’s mind games. Hehehe.

    Screenshot_20240919-181647_1.png

Another thing I found mildly amusing is the sheer number of Polaroids Leonard takes. The man has no memory, sure, but he’s got the instincts of a paparazzo. I couldn’t help but chuckle at how often he whips out the camera to snap yet another clue, like he’s compiling some sort of avant-garde scrapbook. The tattoos, though, are next level dedication. If I had to tattoo important reminders on my body, I’m sure “Buy milk” would somehow end up next to “Find Wife’s Killer,” which would just be confusing.

    Screenshot_20240919-181931_1.png

Humor aside, the film does an exceptional job of making you question what’s real and what’s not. By the time the movie ends (or begins, depending on how you look at it), you’re left wondering if Leonard is truly a hero seeking justice or a tragic figure trapped in an endless loop of vengeance. The ambiguity is one of the film’s greatest strengths, and it lingers with you long after it’s over.

This film is a mind-bending, genre defying film that challenges its audience to engage with a story in a completely unique way. Christopher Nolan’s direction and Guy Pearce’s performance make it a standout in the world of psychological thrillers and let me warn you ahead, it’s the kind of movie that demands repeat viewings just to catch all the subtle clues. It’s not an easy watch but for those who love a good puzzle, it’s an unforgettable experience.

  3. Memento | Reseña | Review@irvinc754d

    PORTADA-M.jpg

    TITULO INGLES.jpg

Our memory moves in mysterious, enigmatic, imprecise territories. Each memory changes according to the moment in which it is evoked. Sometimes, as time goes by, we remember things differently. And it is not strange that at some point we come to doubt whether what is in our memory is really related to something that has happened to us.

Memento (2000), one of the first films by the excellent British director and screenwriter Christofer Nolan, deals with these memory-related problems.

Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) is a successful investigator for an insurance company. His job is to try to detect frauds that are detrimental to the company. He is a methodical, disciplined man with a highly developed intuition.

One night he wakes up with the feeling that something is going on in his house. He gets up, and when he opens the bathroom door he sees a man next to his wife, who is lying on the floor. After a slight struggle he kills the man. But suddenly someone hits him from behind, causing brain damage that affects his short-term memory.

From that moment on, Leonard's life changes completely, he is unable to remember what happened a few minutes ago.

    imagen2-580.jpg

It is amazing how such a condition can affect a person's life. Leonard is not even able to hold a long conversation. If someone is talking to him at a table, or at the bar, and he gets up to get something in his car, when he returns and sits down again Leonard is no longer able to remember it. It is as if his memory is reset every moment.

In such circumstances he becomes a very vulnerable person, anyone can manipulate him, he can be easily fooled since he does not remember the last thing he has experienced. Apparently the only thing that remains solid in his mind is that someone killed his wife and that he is looking for the murderer.

And it is on that search path that the plot of the film unfolds. On his journey Leonard will meet some key characters. On the one hand there is Teddy (Joe Pantoliano) who presents himself as a police informant who is helping Leonard, but all around him is confusion and deception.

There's also Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss), the Matrix's celebrated Trinity. Who appears as the savior woman who wants to help Leonard, but like everything in this movie, nothing is what it seems, and things keep changing with each reboot of our protagonist's mind.

This is the kind of movie that can leave any viewer unsettled. It is not easy to follow its narrative rhythm. Each scene means a trip to the past or to the future, nothing is linear here.

    imagen 3-580.jpg

The director uses a series of very ingenious resources to draw us into the situation. Since Leonard doesn't remember anything, he uses photos to build up a memory. He goes around with a Polaroid taking pictures of significant things, the characters that appear to him, the cars he uses, the hotels where he stays. So, every time he gets confused, he takes a picture where he has left a note. The most significant things he tattoos on his body, where he has engraved, for example, that he must look for his wife's murderer.

The narrative revolves around these notes. That is why it is segmented. Each photo takes us partially to a situation, we are introduced to it and we return again to some starting point. All the time we move forward and backward.

This is a film that exploits to the maximum the possibilities of cinema as an art. Only in a film is it possible to play in this way with the management of time. Without the technique of film editing it would not be possible to intersperse scenes that create the illusion that we are in the character's mind.

Anyone would think that a film like this should have a lot of special effects, but here it is not so. The whole movie is put together in the traditional style, cut and paste, with scenes that are intercut and repeated. Repetition is one of the narrative keys used by the director to help viewers find their way through this great puzzle.

    imagen 4-580.jpg

Another great merit of the films are the performances. Guy Pearce's performance stands out by far. The character of Leonard seems tailor-made for him. I can't imagine any other actor doing this characterization. The truth is that seeing him with his gestures of doubt and uncertainty, he manages to convey the hell that someone with that condition could live. Especially being as aware as he is that everything he is told could be a lie.

I also really liked Joe Pantoliano's performance. His character of Teddy manages to get us into the skin of a manipulative guy, who spares no resource to confuse Leonard. Surely many will remember him for his laugh, a mixture of mockery, trickery and thoughtlessness.

I was less pleased with Carrie-Anne Moss's performance, I saw little strength to her character of Natalie.

It had been a long time since I had seen this film and in this viewing it convinced me again. My recommendation is to find the right time to watch it, when you are not in a hurry and do not have distractions at hand. Here it is important to be aware of the details, otherwise it is easy to get lost in the plot. If you have the chance, see it, it is one of those few movies that stand the test of time and will always be talked about. You can find it now on Prime Video.

    Thanks for your time.

    Hey there, Hive!✨

Today I want to talk to you about one of the best films by my favorite film director. Memento is a 2000 film directed by Christopher Nolan. With a thriller genre plus psychological factors, this almost two hour long but incredibly well done story will leave you hooked from the beginning...

    Spoiler alert!

My opinion about a film by Christopher Nolan.png

    movies-removebg-preview.png

    Synopsis

Leonard Shelby is a young man who suffers from severe brain trauma due to a strong hit in the head, which causes amnesia. When he regains consciousness he realizes that his wife has been murdered, but he remembers absolutely nothing of what happened...

Not understanding what is happening but with an enormous thirst for revenge against the murderer, Leonard begins to investigate the crime, a process in which he notices that he now has certain tattoos on his body but the peculiar thing is not only the fact that he did not had any tattoos nor did he intend to have them, but they are clues to solve the mystery...

    Amnesia, polaroids and chronology

The first interesting point of the film is anterograde amnesia, which is an alteration in memory that prevents the person, in this case Leonard, from being able to retain any new memory for a prolonged period. In other words he is unable to remember new things, all he can remember are issues from before the trauma.

Of course this affectation is contextualized in fiction, however, it is something that can happen in reality, although it does not necessarily involve a mystery, the truth is that it is due to brain injuries caused by strong hits to the head, so the accident that Leonard suffers and its consequence is completely plausible. Besides that, the temporal lobe is where the structures responsible for memory are located, so the fact that the hit occurred precisely in that area is a subtle but accurate detail.

On the other hand, to continue with the psychological aspects included in the plot, Leonard seems to function after the trauma under the bases of conditioning, that is, he learns and associates through repetition of stimuli. When he tries to solve the mystery it is not that he magically manages to store memories again, but that he uses techniques to be able to remember things that he somehow already knew before. Polaroids and tattoos in this case are what in psychology are called stimuli that have a certain meaning. When Leonard sees the stimuli is when he manages to associate their meaning with what he is looking for, and this is how little by little he manages to solve the enigma.

It is a basic psychological theory but it works quite well in the plot, it does not feel like a deus ex machina to explain the protagonist's actions in a forced way, rather it demonstrates discipline, character and the intelligence of the protagonist.

    giphy.gif

Of course it's an interesting story, but what adds even more intrigue and is really the magic of the film is the reverse chronology. In short, the chronological order is narrated starting with what is almost the outcome of the story, as if it were a countdown, going backwards we gradually discover what really happened. This decision by the director not only makes the film more entertaining and intriguing, but I also consider that in some way it is like watching everything from the perspective of the protagonist himself since he must also go back in time to understand what happened, what is happening now and what could happen in the future.

I think that this resource of non-linear narration, although it has been used millions of times by millions of directors and Nolan himself, honestly seems to me to never get boring. It is a part of the thriller that if done properly is not predictable. The thing is doing the plot twist properly generating the necessary tension by providing just the right amount of clues, barely revealing certain things but not too much so that in the end everything is a real surprise. For me Nolan achieved this perfectly in this film.

Little else remains to be said other than the cast undoubtedly also contributed to making this film so entertaining to watch. They get fully into their roles, especially Guy Pearce who plays the protagonist. The actor manages to convey the superb essence of the character, his tenacity, intelligence and frustration. It was a great performance.

In many ways this film is worth to at least once since you will want to solve the mystery as eagerly as its protagonist. It is an example of an excellent work of art. I totally recommend it, and if you've already seen it, let me know your opinion in the comments✨

    ¡Hola, Hive!✨

"Memento" is truly a cinematic gem that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Christopher Nolan's masterful direction and storytelling prowess shine through in this gripping thriller. The film's unique narrative structure, told in reverse chronological order, adds an extra layer of intrigue and keeps viewers engaged as they piece together the puzzle alongside the protagonist, Leonard Shelby.

Guy Pearce delivers a standout performance as Leonard, a man grappling with short-term memory loss on a quest to avenge his wife's murder. Pearce skillfully portrays Leonard's vulnerability and determination, making him a compelling and relatable character despite his condition.

The supporting cast, including Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano, also deliver stellar performances, adding depth and complexity to the story. Nolan's use of black and white scenes interspersed with color sequences adds to the film's visual appeal and enhances its impact.

But what truly sets "Memento" apart is its thought-provoking exploration of themes such as memory, identity, and perception. As the story unfolds, viewers are left questioning what is real and what is imagined, mirroring Leonard's own struggles with his fractured memory.

The film's genius lies in its ability to captivate audiences with its suspenseful plot while also challenging them to think critically about the nature of truth and perception. Whether it's your first time watching or a repeat viewing, "Memento" never fails to leave a lasting impression, making it a timeless classic that deserves all the praise it receives.

    The main cast

Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby: The protagonist suffering from short-term memory loss, on a quest to find his wife's killer.

Carrie-Anne Moss as Natalie: A mysterious woman who becomes involved in Leonard's search for the truth.

Joe Pantoliano as Teddy: A charismatic but enigmatic figure who offers Leonard assistance in his investigation.

Mark Boone Junior as Burt: An acquaintance of Leonard's who provides him with information about his condition and past.

  6. Film Review: Memento (2000)@drax1052d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Christopher Nolan is one of the most celebrated film makers of today and arguably the first one that earned such lofty reputation in 21st Century. Important stepping stone towards that was his feature debut, 2000 thriller Memento.

The script was originated as the idea by Nolan’s brother Jonathan, later turned into short story “Memento Mori”. The protagonist, played by Guy Pearce, is Leonard Shelby, insurance investigator in Los Angeles. His wife was raped and murdered so he infiltrates Los Angeles underworld in order to find perpetrators of the crime and get his revenge. Shelby, however, has a serious problem – he received a brain injury during the attack that claimed his wife’s life and, as a result, became affected by anterograde amnesia. While he can remember any event before attack anything anything afterwards vanishes from his memory after 5-10 minutes. Shelby, however, isn’t discouraged by his inability to remember events or people he had met half hour earlier. He fights amnesia with handwritten notes, Polaroid photos and even has most important information tattooed on his body. Leonard, however, isn’t sure whether the two people that he meets during investigation – mysterious man named Teddy (played by Joe Pantoliano) and attractive woman named Natalie (played by Carrie-Ann Moss) – are his helpers or adversaries that try to manipulate him.

The idea for Memento was quite original and refreshing, but it also brought a serious challenge to Nolan. He tried to show the events from the perspective of the protagonist affected by strange condition that made him lost in time. He also tried to create suspense by having protagonist unsure whether the person with whom he had interaction with was an old friend or enemy met few minutes earlier. Nolan solved this problem through relatively simple and elegant way, somewhat close to the technique used by Quentin Tarantino in Pulp Fiction - non-linear narration. The scenes are displayed in reverse chronological order and explain how the protagonist found himself in particular situation. Protagonist is unaware of that and so is the audience, forced to find answers in the past instead of the future. Nolan tries mix the general plot with series of flashbacks that try to explain Leonard’s condition through the story of Sammy Jenkins (played by Stephen Tobolowsky), man who had the same condition as Leonard and whom Leonard, while being insurance investigator, tried to reveal as fraudster.

The concept works flawlessly in Memento and Nolan tries to remain true to it and refuses to deliver conventional happy ending and instead leaves many questions unanswered, thus allowing audience to draw its own conclusions. That ending, on the other hand, looks a little bit banal and somewhat un-cathartic in comparison with the rest of the film. On the other hand, Nolan shows superb film making skill and is helped by formidable cast that includes Guy Pearce in his best role since L.A. Confidential, accompanied by Carrie Ann-Moss and Joe Pantoliano who play characters very different from those played in The Matrix. Made with relatively small budget, but well-written, well-directed and well-acted, Memento can be recommended not only to the fans of director who made so many great films, but also to those viewers who like to use brain while watching Hollywood thrillers.

    RATING: 8/10 (+++)

    OPINIÓN

    OPINION

Memento is a film by Christopher Nolan that I had been recommended to see a long time ago, because I was stubborn I never looked for it, but after so much insistence on the part of my partner I saw it recently, now heeding the recommendations that she and my acquaintances give me. Memento is a film that draws attention due to the fact that it goes in reverse, the film begins from the end, and ends at the beginning, is what they told me to see it and I did not understand very well how it could be like that, until I saw it and understood it.

The film begins being somewhat disorganized, being its charm from the beginning, showing later how it was that conclusion was reached, showing nonsensical parts that the next minute answers that unknown that still cannot be shaped because it is solved at the moment. The interesting thing may also be that the viewer can draw his own theories on the air, I must say that I could not hit any assumption, it was beyond what I could imagine at the time and I loved that.

I got to see that the fans made a mental map of how the events of the film are going, it is really well elaborated, showing the dedication of people to understand a film that was made with the dedication to captivate and question reality. At first I admit that it bored me a bit, jumping from one scene to another, from one moment to another, I had to stay longer to see what the director really wanted to show, how he wanted to confuse the viewer's mind.

The movie at the end made me feel like when I saw "The butterfly effect" looking at nothing trying to unite the fragments, another film that made me feel like that was "The prestige" of that I remember a lot for being one of my favorite films, coincidentally also made by Christopher Nolan.

The movie was released in 2000, lasts for almost two hours, and is currently on Netflix, so don't waste time and go watch it to start putting together your own mind map of the movie's events.
