  1. Film Review: No Country for Old Men (2007)@drax636d

    (source: tmdb.org)

The Oscars have long since lost any significance as an indicator of a film's true quality. In 2006, the Academy's award for The Departed served more like a consolation prize for Martin Scorsese and a compensation for decades of snubbing by the Academy, rather than a genuine reward for the film itself. In a sense, the same could be said for No Country for Old Men, the 2007 crime drama directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Although, in this particular case, the Academy's choice happened to be a very good film indeed.

Based on the 2005 novel by celebrated author Cormac McCarthy, the film is set in 1980 West Texas. The plot revolves around Llewelyn Moss (played by Josh Brolin), a welder and Vietnam War veteran who, while hunting in the desert, stumbles upon the bloody aftermath of a drug deal gone spectacularly wrong. He takes a briefcase containing $2 million in cash, but this action makes him a target of criminals who not only want the money back, but also to eliminate any witnesses. Moss now has to evade Anton Chigurh (played by Javier Bardem), a ruthless but resourceful psychopathic killer who will stop at nothing to catch him and kill him. As the pursuit continues and bodies continue to pile up, Ed Tom Bell (played by Tommy Lee Jones), the Terrell County Sheriff, tries his best to protect Moss' wife Carla Jean (played by Kelly Macdonald), despite thinking that, as an old man, he is no match for the new level of drug-fuelled violence in Texas.

The Coen brothers have always enjoyed exploring various genres, and No Country for Old Men represents an intriguing combination of western, film noir, road film and existential drama, all sprinkled with a little of the black humour characteristic of the brothers' previous work. The film is superbly directed, especially in the opening scenes and later when the cat-and-mouse game between Moss and Chigurh results in some of the most suspenseful scenes in the history of 21st century cinema.

McCarthy was an author known for his pessimism, and the Coen brothers' film is a clear reflection of it. The plot strays from Hollywood conventions that reward heroes, protect the innocent, and punish the guilty. Instead, the world is ruled by capricious twists of fate. The protagonist, a decent, ordinary but resourceful man who would be the traditional protagonist in conventional films, is bound to lose, and when it happens, it isn't due to his adversary being superior, but because of a chance encounter and someone else's careless remark.

No Country for Old Men embodied this nihilistic worldview in the form of Chigurh, who is often mentioned as one of cinema history's greatest villains. Javier Bardem's Oscar-winning performance as Chigurh is a ruthless, unstoppable force of nature devoid of any compassion or morality, akin to Schwarzenegger's iconic character in The Terminator, a 1984 science fiction classic that this film pays homage to in one of the scenes. Yet, there is self-awareness in Chigurh, who has not openly embraced nihilistic views and made his decisions based on coin tosses, but also had his own personal code that he would follow despite the fact that it made no sense and ultimately got Chigurh into a whole lot of trouble at the end.

The Coens try, and for the most part succeed, in conveying this depressive message by giving their film a specific atmosphere. This is achieved through excellent cinematography by Roger Deakins, as well as the unusual absence of music, with composer and Coen Brothers' old collaborator Carter Burwell delivering his soundtrack only at the end credits. This allows the audience to concentrate on the plot and various minor but very telling details.

No Country for Old Men is a very good film, but it is also far from perfect. The main reason for this could be found in the character of Ed Tom Bell, who is supposed to be the narrator and some sort of Greek chorus, but is actually absent from much of the plot. While Tommy Lee Jones plays it very well, his presence seems unnecessary and only adds to the film's long running time, with the plot resolution, or to be more precise, the lack of, making the film a rather frustrating experience for an audience that aren't snobbish devotees of arthouse cinema.

The same thing can be said for the character of Carson Wells, the "fixer", which, despite providing Woody Harrelson with the opportunity to shine in a relatively small role, adds nothing to the film other than increasing the body count and running time.

Despite these criticisms, No Country for Old Men became a significant success both critically and commercially. It has solidified its place as one of the more memorable Oscar winners in recent years—a film that resonates with audiences for its exploration of moral ambiguity and existential dread. The Coen brothers have crafted a modern classic that transcends genre limitations while engaging with profound philosophical questions about fate and human agency.

  2. No Country for Old Men@cute-cactus668d

The story of dozens of dead bodies and unclaimed money left behind after a dispute between drug gangs in Texas is the main theme of the 2007 film No Country for Old Men.

    [source](https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/4vlMYBQCFTJ6oeuiqEGy93mkkhe.jpg)

If I approach the story of the movie from a broad perspective, I can say that it has a structure where we will see a lot of reflections of the collapsing moral values of people, but I can also say that it is a successful production to have a good time.

Llewelyn Moss, who coincidentally finds the unclaimed 2 million dollar bag among dozens of corpses, is the character who best reflects the collapsing moral values. Anton Chigurh, who emerges as the owner of the money he thinks is unclaimed and kills almost everyone he sees without even questioning the collapsing moral values, is the other character of the movie.

The fact that No Country for Old Men takes place under the conflicts, goals, disagreements and struggle for life between these two characters makes the story more interesting. After a certain point, the movie turns into an adventure between the two and offers extra viewing pleasure thanks to its fluidity and rivalry.

    [source](https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/kd9jFTTabg4xJpHDgxY0h8F9BzG.jpg)

What I liked most about the movie is the way the story reflects the different traits that are added to both characters. The unique traits of the characters give more of an impression of an image on display, and certainly thanks to the actors' accomplishments; they contribute perfectly to the story.

The few traits added to Anton Chigurh, who pursues the main character and acts as his shadow, are frustrating in some scenes, but in the bigger picture, they are very much in line with the moral collapse that is being created and accepted in the story.

Although Anton Chigurh is after him, Llewelyn Moss, who seems to know his every step in advance, is actually following the dream of most of us. Who wouldn't want to claim the 2 million dollars lying unclaimed? It's debatable whether his taking the opportunity that came his way by chance falls into the category of collapsing moral values. Lol

    [source](https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/3xNafEghS6WgTRdNsNdAlLWJnmW.jpg)

But if you look at the story of the movie from a broader perspective, it is very clear that this interrogation is not just a case of unqualified theft. In fact, I don't want to spoil your viewing pleasure by going into too much detail by saying that there are many details that can and cannot be done in the story.

I recommend you to watch No Country for Old Men with its thriller, crime and adventure story. The story is told in some detail and this makes the movie a bit long, but when the rivalry between the characters starts, you don't even realize how fast the time passes.

Thank you for being here and reading. I hope I have helped you to get a preliminary idea about the movie. I wish everyone who will see the movie a good time. Take care and goodbye!

What a masterpiece of a film.

Topics include observations and theories on the core story question, story structure and pacing, motifs, lack of music, awareness of story location (extreme nature and isolation), and more within No Country for Old Men.

  6. Wow! What Memories with this Movie. "No Country for Old Men". [Eng-Esp]@ksmith71440d

I have been pleased to see again a movie with a story that turns into a nightmare, but in a way that could be considered very particular. After a good friend told me about it, we talked a little about the plot, but I wanted to see it again to refresh the details that make it a must-see for lovers of suspense and action thrillers. I am referring to the film No country for old men or "No place for the weak" according to its Spanish title, released in 2007 and directed by the Americans Ethan and Joel Coen.

I should start by mentioning that one of the "new" things I noticed in this review, was about the development of several stories according to the perspective of the main characters, played by the sheriff Ed Tom Bell (played by Tommy Lee Jones); and that I like to see him always in law enforcement jobs, actually he has always been very good in this role, but this time his character has a different attitude from the previous ones, he is no longer the dominant and implacable guy, but rather a softer cop, perhaps because of his visible senectitude, something totally understandable.

    no-country-for-old-men.pngSource

Old Ed leads the department and made me empathize with his nostalgia, which also increases with the appearance of a criminal who overcomes his ability to defend himself, making him feel the imminent decline of his inherited professional career. After digesting that opener, I went on to visualize the second story within the plot, that of the good Llewelyn Moss (played by Josh Brolin); an ordinary guy to whom something happens that can happen to all of us and that marked his life. A man who made a decision that affected his future, but in the least thought way. It is always strange to see that a dream finding ends up turning into the opposite, how ironic!

And the third situation has to do with a character that surpassed any expectation on my part; someone who reminds us with his cold and unexpected style, that the worst villain is the one who doesn't appear to be one to others. This guy really needs no further introduction, as the name Anton Chigurh (played masterfully by Javier Bardem) alone seems to take on a life of its own. This work by Bardem is so precise, that Anton seems to be a personification of his alter ego; leaving me with the impression that he is the man behind the actor, or that he simply has a life of his own, beyond the film. In short, it's something you have to see and evaluate for yourselves.

    No_es_pa_s_para_viejos-151260883-large.jpgSource

So it is the viewers, who will continue to see various stories that revolve around these characters; as if it were a comic book in which the drawings take on a life of their own, become humanized and come out of the book. However, both Sheriff Ed Tom and the "lucky" Llewelyn experience a radical change in their lives, something that changes their status quo and will mark the outcome of their respective stories. And it is all because of the same factor of change, represented by the ruthless Chigurh; someone worthy of analysis and comparison with his antagonist counterparts, since with his own style, he is unlike anyone else.

Undoubtedly, the course and supposed control of our lives is governed by the decisions we make at critical moments; there are even many of those moments that not even we can identify how critical and decisive they are to continue living or not (you have to ask the character of the gas station ha,ha,ha,ha); but the strange thing is that who apparently decides, does it with a kind of random game; that and his peculiar life-taking weapon, gives a particular dimension to the "fictional" character and the film as a whole. Because it not only torments Bell and Moss, but the viewer himself; something not very easy to achieve and that is applaudable from the Coen brothers.

The rest of the cast does a magnificent job, the plot is not the most impressive, but Josh, Javier and Tommy, are in charge of putting their strength and personal touch, that their extensive professional experiences have developed. I think that even as I watched the scenes unfold, I thought about whether I would take the money or just go on my way; because I also remembered my review of "A Simple Plan", where the dirty money also wreaked havoc. I even had a similar taste in my mouth, as it is the evil, which gives the feeling of prevailing in the end, however it is a very personal perception on my part.

As for the purely cinematographic aspects, I really liked the desert setting and the landscapes of the border area between the United States and Mexico. Long straight roads, under the inclement sun and being on the lookout for an almost indecipherable killer; it definitely did not make me feel the passage of time, since its two lengths pass between the suspense and anxiety of seeing something that is destined to happen, but we are afraid to see it happen. A blockbuster, award-winning and successful film that we should all enjoy even just once.

Heads or tails? Choose one from the coin I just flipped, if you win then you get to live otherwise you are dead. If this is the situation then who is gonna call it. Are you up for the risk of calling for your life? Hehehe. There was such a scene and I was feeling the same thing.

No Country For Old Men is a crime thriller film which is directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, and it's based on a novel by McCarthy.

The plot of the movie was set in 1980 in West Texas. There is much more to take from the story than it has shown us. Initially, we can start with the character of Josh Brolin as Llewelyn Moss, who gets to hold a large sum of money in a desert, around 2 million dollars, a drug deal had gone wrong and almost everyone was dead and so he got hold of that money out of nowhere and escaped.

And for the second character, we have our villain Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh, a serial psychopath killer. In the very first scene we had seen that he was arrested and taken into custody and from there he escaped by killing that officer after that, he just kills whoever he wants or comes in his way. A unique hairstyle with black attire and calm nature.

Story picks up its gear when Llewelyn decides to return to that desert from where he had got those money because someone there was barely alive and asked for water, so at midnight he woke up and left for there with water and when he reached there he saw him dead as someone shot him. There were Mexican mafias, they saw him and chased him, Llewelyn someone managed to survive with gunshots in his shoulder but things got messy, right? And later we see Anton sent after Llewelyn to bring back that money. There was a tracker in that briefcase of money and Llewelyn had the receiver that notifies if that tracker is around in its radius.

This is the kickstart of the story, you can expect a mouse and rat race but there are much more interesting scenes and consequences to watch and enjoy. You can watch the whole movie and feel nothing. On the other hand, some deep thoughts about fate, consequences, and the characters, you can sink into them in your thoughts after the runtime is over, as I did. There are two scenes with the coin tossing which I mentioned at the top of my writing, and the ending consequences for Llewelyn and his wife, and ending scenes for Anton. Also, there were a couple of supporting roles, they meant a lot to but I wanna stick to Llewelyn and Anton as the main roles and the rest of them as the supporting, playing as Detective and Sheriff.

It was an amazing thriller, loved watching this. The name sounds different but it got a meaning too, watch the film, you won't regret watching it. Overall I would love to rate it 8 out of 10. Go for it if you haven't already, Happy Watching!

The acting was excellent, the storyline interesting, and the script was superb. The only bad thing about this movie was its ending; I sort of like it, but many watching the movie did not.

  9. Film Structure Analysis #14 - No Country for Old Men (2007)@lionsuit2459d

    IMG_20191002_215408343.jpg

To me, No Country for Old Men is one of the most impressive films ever made. I remember sitting in the theater when it ended. You could hear the audience clearly express love and hate. It was fascinating.

Just let this film be what it is. A statement. A question. A story constructed by an amazing author and two of the greatest filmmakers to ever live.

    It's Ed Tom's story, not Llewelyn's.

  10. No Country for Old Men (film): Coen brothers' hit@gooddream2829d

I've always found it wonderful that these two brothers are able to work so well together. I think that we would be at each others' throats constantly if i worked with one of my family members - and we like each other.

I suppose that is beside the point. This movie is extremely good and very memorable. For some very good reasons.

    no_country_for_old_men_2007_975_poster.jpg

I am actually one of the people that found this movie to drag on a bit and to be honest with you I can't say exactly why i feel that way. However this is easily compensated for by the presence of one of the most terrifying characters of all time. I am of course referring to Javier Bardem's chilling portrayal of hitman, Anton Chigurh.

    no-country-for-old-men_1280x720.jpg

There is just something about his size, his extremely deep voice, his weapon of choice, and his near complete lack of empathy that puts him right near the top of most evil baddies in any movie ever. I don't want to say too much in the event that I could spoil something for those that have not yet seen the movie (and you really should) but i will say this: I did some research and even spoke to a few people to investigate if this sort of weaponry exists, and it doesn't. I mean the tech exists, but it has nearly zero range. If you haven't seen the movie you don't know what I am talking about, but that is precisely the point.

The story is actually one that is featured in many other films. A common man stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong in the middle of the desert. Everyone on site is either dead or near dead and there is a case with 2 million dollars in it. Llewelyn Moss (played by Josh Brolin) takes off with the cash, only to be relentlessly pursued by the aforementioned demon of a man, Anton Chigurh.

    large_banner_no-country-for-old-men.jpg

THERE IS A MINOR SPOILER IN THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH - Skip to after the next image if you haven't seen the film.

I think one of my favorite aspects of the movie is the involvement of Woody Harrelson, who we are lead to believe is going to be a major character in the story, but he is actually quite unceremoniously dispatched shortly after his introduction. I like this tactic. The first time I recall seeing it was in the movie SCREAM, where Drew Barrymore gets offed in the first 5 minutes of the movie.

    636095627416079142-Hotel.jpg

The scenery choices for this movie were simply incredible. I haven't spent much time in that part of the world but i think we tend to forget how much of the USA, especially in and around Texas, is filled with wide open spaces. Fans of this movie might notice i didn't talk about Tommy Lee Jones at all and that is nothing personal, i think he is a great actor. However, in this movie I felt as though he was more of a narrator than an actual part of the story. Correct me if i am wrong, i tend to be from time to time.

I feel as though this movie should be on a list for one of the best crime-thrillers made in Hollywood ever. This is not a genre I feel that Hollywood does particularly well but No Country for Old Men is epic, and you should make time to see it.

To return to No Country, the Coen Brothers have another great film here. One of their best. Adapted from Cormac McCarthy's novel.

It's one of the most amazing examples of motif. The next time you watch, call out feet, shoes, socks whenever you see them. They are the or one of the core visual(s) of the film.

Check your feet for blood. Step over blood. Buy socks. Buy boots. Take off bloody socks. Let your boots crush glass as you approach. Scuff the floors up. Put your feet up on the bed. It goes on and on. Even the soundtrack--besides a few moments of tone, there is no music in the film. To me, the footsteps are the music, the score.

Why is this so genius? It's a chase film. One character chases another. A third character chases both of them.

Show feet not moving, give the audience pressure. However you look at it, remind us none the less that it's a chase.

    Be well.

No Country for Old Men is a 2007 American neo-western neo-noir crime drama film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, based on Cormac McCarthy's novel No Country for Old Men. A cat-and-mouse drama starring Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin, it follows a Texas welder and Vietnam veteran in the desert landscape of 1980 West Texas. The film revisits the themes of fate, conscience, and circumstance that the Coen brothers had explored in the films Blood Simple (1984) and Fargo (1996). image

No Country for Old Men (2007)

a Themovieplace short review and recommendation to the Steemit Community

Hello everyone the daily recommendation for today is the movie No Country for Old Men (2007), directed by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen (The Coen Brothers) who are among the best directors of our times managing to create movies like Miller's Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991), Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), True Grit (2010), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013). There are some movies I have not seen yet and I intend to watch, and among them they are: Blood Simple. (1984), Raising Arizona (1987), The Man Who Wasn't There (2001), A Serious Man (2009), Hail, Caesar! (2016). The Coen Brothers have a unique style which makes you love their creations but also you can hate them pretty easy and I am an example in this situation and I will tell you that i didn't like The Big Lebowski (1998) when I saw it for the first time and generally i'm not attracted to satirical movies but after seeing it for the second time with my brother I changed my opinion, and recently I saw it the third time and I liked it even more and I find more things which made me appreciate even more this great movie. Let's get started and see why I liked this movie and I'll explain a few things about it.

    Short Review(Possible spoilers)

    1.JPG

The movie starts with Ed Tom Bell who tells that he was a sheriff of that land at the age of 25 and his grandfather and his father were lawmen too and that his father was proud of him. A psychopath killer by name Anton Chigurh is caught by a deputy sheriff which takes him to the station and while he's talking on the phone with the sheriff Chigurh succeed to change the position of the handcuffs with which he will strangle the deputy and kills another man too with his captive bolt pistol from which he steals his car.

Llewelyn Moss another character appears in the landscape which is hunting pronghorns in de desert and during this time he notices with his binoculars some cars and a few corpses and is heading to them where will find a Mexican who is seriously injured and is begging for water. He realizes that it was a fight and ask the survivor if there are others who they survived but he don't know English at all and Moss he decides to search alone and find another deceased under a tree and two million dollars and takes them home.

Getting home he is asked by his wife what's in the bag and from where he got the gun and he tells her that the bag is with money and that he found the gun and he decides to return that night to where he found money and he is chased by two men and their dog which eventually is shot by Moss.

Anton Chigurh stops at a gas station where it fills its tank and is annoyed by the cashier when he is interested from where is he coming and he start to play heads or tails with the cashier who asks him wondering what is the stake and he answers that is everything, and up here is my description about this movie which I will let you see to discover the continuation. No Country for Old Men is one of the best movies of the year 2007 and he did not bore me at all although the Coen brothers have a special style and most of their movie ends suddenly and the audience expected something else often from the end and some even are annoy about this thing but I'm already used to their style and it does not bother me. The actors played very well and I will focus more on Javier Bardem which made a phenomenal role for which he received an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a supporting role but let's not forget that in that year also the movie There Will Be Blood (2007) participated and Paul Dano in my opinion he could also win quite well these awards. Is a movie that I recommend to everyone and if you want a certain genre to be recommended for tomorrow you can ask for it and I'll try to find a movie which you have not seen yet, or if you've seen it I hope you enjoyed it (without anime and documentary), and will win the genre which is required by the majority.

My rating 9/10(Another great movie from the Coen brothers, a must see movie)
