En esta grata ocasión, quiero presentarles un anime que se encuentra en lo más profundo del iceberg de las cintas perturbadoras, del cual casi nadie habla. Prohibido en Japón y en todo el mundo, con registros casi inexistentes, así es, estoy hablando de "Midori: la niña de las camelias". Espero que les agrade.
The story follows Midori, a sweet little girl who loses her father when he abandons the family, and whose mother dies from a tragic, incurable disease. Left alone in the world, she is tricked by a stranger who pretends to offer her help and takes her to work in a freak show. Life in the circus is far from easy, as Midori is forced to perform humiliating and inhumane tasks, becoming a victim of abuse at the hands of all the circus performers. These people are visually shocking and deformed, harboring resentment toward society due to their inevitable exclusion and ostracism.
La historia sigue a Midori, una dulce niña que pierde a su padre cuando este abandona a la familia, y cuya madre muere a causa de una trágica enfermedad incurable para la época. Ella queda sola en el mundo, y un extraño que aparenta ofrecerle su ayuda la engaña y la lleva a trabajar en un circo de fenómenos. La vida en el circo tampoco es sencilla, ya que Midori se ve obligada a realizar tareas humillantes e inhumanas, siendo víctima de abuso por parte de todos los integrantes del circo. Estas personas son seres deformes con discapacidades visualmente impactantes, quienes guardan resentimiento hacia la sociedad debido a su inevitable exclusión y destierro de ella.
Everything seems to be improving for Midori when Kanamitsu, a dwarf magician, arrives. He manages to elevate the circus's status and give Midori a decent life, protecting her from all her abusers and promising her a better future. At first glance, it seems that the life of our 12-year-old protagonist is going to improve. However, Kanamitsu begins a somewhat twisted, toxic, and abusive romantic relationship with her, plunging Midori into a much deeper abyss than before. Midori tries to escape the toxic environment of the circus, but she doesn't succeed, and by the end of the story, it becomes a grotesque psychological horror.
Todo parece mejorar para midori cuando llega kanamitsu un enano mago el cual logra elevar el estatus del circo y darle una vida digna a Midori protegiéndola de todos sus abusadores y prometiéndole un futuro mejor a simple vista parece que la vida de nuestra pequeña protagonista de 12 años va a mejorar sin embargo Kanamitsu empieza una relación amorosa con ella un poco retorcida tóxica y abusiva hundiendo a midori en un hueco muchísimo peor del que anteriormente se encontraba. Midori intenta escapar del ambiente tóxico del circo, pero no lo consigue, y al final de la obra se convierte en un mero terror psicológico y grotesco.
Both the narrative and visual elements, given that the work belongs to the ero-guro genre, were among the reasons why it was heavily censored in Japan, to the point that authorities destroyed the tapes and it was not released abroad. Therefore, for many years, Midori became a legend that people could watch clandestinely. Furthermore, the elements used in Shoujo Tsubaki are a direct critique of Japan's highly moralistic system and a form of rebellion against the conservative ideas of the system and the state of society after World War II. It was also inspired by the manga of Suehiro Maruo, who drew inspiration from the style of old Japanese fair posters from the Showa era. The author of Midori used stories typical of fairs and circuses, where people performing paper puppet shows would entice children to watch the plays and give them sweets. However, the author took this idea and transformed it into something far more disturbing, resulting in a grotesque, erotic, psychologically horrific, and deeply unsettling work. The animation style is visually devastating, disorienting the viewer and inducing a feeling of dizziness or hallucination, as if under the influence of some substance. The entire plot is utterly unsettling.
Tanto los elementos narrativos como los visuales, dado que la obra pertenece al género ero-guro, fueron algunas de las razones por las cuales fue altamente censurada en Japón, al punto de que las autoridades destruían las cintas y no fue comercializada en el extranjero. Por lo tanto, durante muchos años, Midori se convirtió en una leyenda que las personas podían ver clandestinamente. Además, los elementos que utiliza Shoujo Tsubaki son una crítica directa al sistema altamente moralista de Japón y una forma de rebelión contra las ideas conservadoras del sistema y de cómo quedó la sociedad después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. También se inspiró en el manga de Suehiro Maruo, quien se inspira en el estilo de los carteles de ferias antiguas japonesas de la era Showa. Toda la trama es extremadamente desesperante.
I highly recommend this work for its direct critique of the Japanese moral system and its complete rebellion against the conservative ideas of old Japan and the double standards of that era. Unfortunately, Midori's case also occurred in real life. Furthermore, it's an exceptional example of psychological horror and the erotic genre, which is not currently very explored by the anime industry. Thank you so much for reading this far. Recomiendo encarecidamente esta obra por su crítica directa al sistema japonés en cuanto a la moral y por su total rebelión contra las ideas conservadoras del Japón antiguo y la doble moral de aquella época. El caso de Midori, lamentablemente, también ocurría en la vida real.
