Some ago, reading a film commentary, I found out about the existence of a film filmed in 2017 by the direct of Parasites, that excellent criticism against cionsumism and a sector of today's society in which the priority is what material and exhibit what you have, even living in conditions that no one would imagine would be those according to what -exteriorly- it holds.

Bong Joon-ho is a South Korean film director who, a couple of years later, was going to surprise us with Parasites winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival but that already in 2017 began to make to masterfully see in his films, with a certain dose of exaggeration and irony, that social criticism.

The movie whose review today I want to share with all the members of this great community is Okja.

Apart from the social commitment shown, it has other characteristics, among them and no less important is being a South Korean-American co-production with several "locations" or filming locations, which meant an investment of more than fifty million euros for the producers.

Among the best known actors in the Hollywood scene are Jake Gyllenhaal and Giancarlo Espósito, the well-known Gustavo "Gus" Fring in the series Breaking Bad and Better Call

The Korean scenes were filmed around the Guro-gu electrical substation, on the Yanghwaen bridge in Seoul, in Daejeon, on the Gangbyeonbuk highway, and in Sangam-dong. While the rest of the film was shot in Vancouver (Canada) and New York (USA).

UU.)

An international company called Mirando Corporation plans to genetically modify pig DNA to increase production and meet the continuously increasing global demand for food.

For this reason, it establishes a contest in which factories compete in different parts of the world where the pigs that are supplied as children by the multinational are raised.

The prizes, in the style of the best rural exhibitions, will be awarded to the producers who obtain the best animal, in other words the largest and best developed animal.

At the top of the Gangwon Mountains in South Korea, a grandfather and a girl are developing the experiment, which, in this case, is a sow, and is called Okja.

At the end of the cycle, the idea is to move it to New York for a marketing campaign and then transform it into ..... sausages.

Faced with this horrible idea, the girl rebels and helped by an activist group that fights for animal rights (Animal Liberation Front) to rescue her pet and friend and take her back to the mountains where she grew up. Along with another small exponent who managed to rescue from the refrigerator where the animals are slaughtered.

    124.-Reseñas-peliculas-Okja-4.png

    banner-film-myopinion-miopinion.1668918_960_720.png

The criticism could be simplified if we limit ourselves to the director's statements when he expresses that the idea was to show an image about the amikstad between people and animals.

And although there is nothing to answer in this regard, it is clear that it is a declaration of commitment not to collide with the large monopoly groups in the food market.

Because, in reality, the subtlety of the film, with much irony highlighted by the exaggeration of the main character's size, is to establish until when - and in order to satisfy the global demand for food - the DNA of the animals (as are currently most cereals) subjecting them to conditions of captivity and sometimes mistreatment that are not acceptable under any point of view.

Some notable phrases such as that of the president of the multinational when she expresses that "it is enough that it costs little for people to eat anything" and other pearls like that.

And, to top it off, the final part of the film and these phrases take place in the urban context of New York City, an emblem of the United States, a consumer country if there is one. With a marketing and product promotion campaign that is not too far from reality ...

    124.-Reseñas-peliculas-Okja-3.png

    Source/Fuente.

  3. Okja: Bong Jon Hoo between cinism and naivety@serialfiller2283d

    image.png

There's always a first. There is always a story before success. A story in history that in cinema and on wikipedia, on Imdb is called "Filmography". The filmography of a director allows us to understand the path of a filmmaker, to understand how that person came to planetary success, how he built his poetics, his style. Parasite has amazed everyone this year. He amazed everyone thanks to an incredible rise that led him to win 4 Oscars, the most important ones. Thanks to his director, that Bon Jong Hoo who wiped out the competition and amazed the whole world from Korea. If Parasite seemed a surprise it's because she didn't pay much attention to the filmography of this wonderful and visionary director. Important, impressive titles that brought him to the forefront of Hollywood well before 2019 with important collaborations and important films like Snowpiercer and the more recent Okja. And it is Okja to be the film that precedes the masterpiece Parasite. Netflix gave a great chance to the Korean director who didn't disappoint, making one of the most particular and special film of the last years. A visionary and grotesque film, imaginative, full of technique and childlike vision of the world. A vision as naive as that of a child but that blends with the dark cynicism of those who have understood society to the core. And so was born a film that contains the desire of an Asian girl to create a happy family with her super-pig Okja and the determination of the corporations to betray the promises made out of pure and greedy capitalism. Around this dualism this wonderful film was born and grows. A film that seems to take no position but ends up being bittersweet like few others. It is clear that it is very difficult to win against the powerful, against the strength of the multinationals. Clear in highlighting the determination, the heart of a little girl who loves. Animalism, capitalism, environmentalism. Many -isms are treated by bringing out the best and the worst of every force told. A nice way to achieve success, arrived a few months later with the masterpiece that we all know.

  4. Okja (film) : One of the best films of 2017 - I got choked up at one point@gooddream2491d

Warning: This is a long one... because I really enjoyed the film

I'm not at all shy about admitting that I am a big fan of Korean cinema, but this one is a Korean movie in disguise as it largely features some pretty big names from Hollywood films. However, the story is directed and co-written by Bong Joon-ho (director of "Memories of Murder" - one of my favorite films of all time) and most of it is in Korean... so I guess it is a Korean movie.

The fact that it appears to be a run-of-the-mill Hollywood CGI-fest is likely the reason that I never saw this movie until today. You might be in the same situation and if that is the case I suggest you sit down for the 2 hour run-time of this gem.

    [source](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e6/fc/6f/e6fc6f1a34f58fe8fe0284bc5b77b696.jpg)

The film begins with the CEO of Mirando corporation announcing a contest of sorts involving a "super-pig" that will be distributed all around the world and ten years later judged to determine a winner. It's a bizarre start to the film and because i find Tilda Swinton (who plays Lucy Mirando) just.. kinda... disturbing, I nearly turned the film off.

However, after that brief intro we immediately switch to the "meat and potatoes" of the film, which is to focus on a young Korean girl, living in the jungle with her super-pig' named Okja.

    [source](https://i2.wp.com/thetacomaledger.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/OKJA-FF2-006.jpeg?fit=850%2C503)

Despite Okja's massive size, she (i think it was female) is an incredibly docile creature. Okja and the young girl (named Mija and is brilliantly played by the wonderfully talented Ahn Seo-hyun) seem to share a very special bond. Okja is more than capable of crushing those that would do her harm, but because of her gentle upbringing by Miju, the creature doesn't seem to be at all prone to violence.

Later the company that technically owns Okja turns up to claim it and of course this is very upsetting to Miju, who has to go on a quest to rescue her giant pet friend. She inadvertently runs into a group of animal rights activists and this is where some surprisingly big Hollywood names become part of the cast.

    [source](http://d263ao8qih4miy.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/okja_3.jpg)

I would imagine that it is difficult for Steven Yeun to get work in films since every time anyone looks at him the only thing we think about is that there has to be some zombies nearby. But seeing as how he actually can speak Korean (kinda- i've been told he isn't very good at it) he is an obvious choice for the role.

The main reason why this film is so special in my mind is probably because I have a real soft spot in my heart for animals and this movie has a not-so-hidden message about the pretty terrible things that happen in the livestock industry. It kind of made me rethink my choices because I am not a vegetarian and am unlikely to become one... Some of the scenes in the film, and i know it is fiction, are pretty heart-breaking.

The action comes steadily, but that isn't to suggest that it is purely an action film, because it isn't. Also, since it is in fact a Korean film, the usual Hollywood predictability is never guaranteed, and that had me very worried at certain parts of the film since Korean films are known for sometimes having absolutely gruesome twists. The only bad acting in the entire thing was shockingly at the hands of Jake Gyllenhaal... although it may not have been his fault - the character he plays is simply annoying - as is the voice Jake chose to use with it.

Okja cost $50 million to make and i was surprised to learn that it made almost no money back. It wasn't even in theaters in most of the world and I don't understand why that is. It only managed to make 2.1 million back in Korea and it was only in the U.K. for 2 days and had an extremely limited release in the USA. Perhaps it was meant to be a mostly Netflix thing from the start - I dunno.

Anyway, this is one of the best films I have seen so far this year (and yes, i know it was released in 2017) and I highly recommend it but you need to know that most of the movie is in Korean, so you are going to have to read a lot of it.

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I give Okja the overall score of.....

  5. Review Film: Okja (2017)@film-trail2957d

Of his many advantages, Okja deserves to be seen as a tangible evidence of cross-cultural success in cinema. Let's go back to 2013 when the "Korean epidemic" culminated in Hollywood, giving way to three leading directors of Ginseng Affairs: Bong Joon-ho, Kim Jee-woon, and Park Chan-wook working there. Their films are equally superior in quality, but only Snowpiercer is counting success in the market. The reason is simple. When The Last Stand feels old school and Stoker too artsy, Snowpiercer successfully unify the action of a typical Hollywood blockbuster with Korean absurdity spice. Okja continues the achievement of Bong Joon-ho, In 2007, the world is considered food shortages. This inspired Mirando Corporation to run a 10-year long-term project to breed 26 super pigs sent to 26 livestock experts from different countries. The ultimate goal is to create excess food sources. The prologue could have been delivered using a lightning exposition nan pickup accompanied voice-over narration. But instead, the audience was treated to a Tilda Swinton presentation with a bob hair was eccentric as Lucy Mirando. The action of the CEO Mirando Corporation accompanied by a festive visual decoration, juggling the background content of the story that usually goes casually so bind attention.

Jumping 10 years later in the mountains of South Korea, the little girl named Mija (Ahn Seo-hyun) lives with her grandfather (Byun Hee-bong) while taking care of one of the super-growing pigs (such as elephant hybrids, and pigs) and named Okja. When Mirando's party through Johnny Wilcox (Jake Gyllenhaal) the presenter of the animal show on television arrives, pinned the best pig predicate on Okja then took him away for food with other super pigs, Mija did not take it for granted. The only capital bag containing the change of fortune breaking the piggy bank, this boy desperate alone to New York in order to save his friend.

Okja was moving into the adventure phase where Bong style uniqueness combined with blockbuster filmmaking contains fast tempo action. The first meeting of Mija and ALF (Animal Liberation Front) led by Jay (Paul Dano) is a real example. It is a romp on a highway that is not only exciting, it is also unique. Jaeil Jung's music is not just a quick beat percussion adrenaline rush, but also combines various types of instruments. While Bong still dares to change the tone, a moment of emotional drama, momentarily show horror scenery, then throw a little humour. His comedy was not cheap. The moment when ALF members were so relaxed even reminded Mirando's employees to wear seatbelts before ploughing his DNA Bong truck which was the result of "forging" the culture of his native country's film.

The majority of sci-fi offerings tuck into the subtext of humanity and all sides of life in the story. The manuscripts by Bong Joon-ho and Jon Ronson do not miss it, attacking the corporates who stab each other and get rid of the conscience to pursue the material. Also touched on the habit of consumption of meat. But Okja is not vegetarian propaganda. After all the main character is shown to love to eat fish. Instead of an invitation (let alone coercion), Bong and Ronson put more emphasis on contemplation. We see the cruelty to animals while being invited to sympathize with animal and human companionship. Not eating behaviour. More essential than that, the lack of compassion in the effort to meet the personal needs (wealth and stomach) that became the target, Enrich the colour of a film is the ranks of players. Tilda Swinton remains the "chameleon" actress. Acting out two opposite type characters, he shows how to hypnotize through laughter, smiles, and antique poses. Jake Gyllenhaal seemed to be enjoying a show of skill at being stupid while occasionally hysterical like Jim Carey in his golden days. And the performance is also fun to watch. The character is not complex but entertaining. Depth actually raised Ahn Seo-hyun. Mija is not a whiner, nor a brave child who is more mature than her age. He was strong because it had been forged and whipped up with a powerful impulse, with eyes that seemed to always look steadily forward, toward his goal: Okja. The rest of him is a teenage boy in general. This reinforces the points of the conclusion of the film, that Okja is not a big-scale struggle to save the world, just a personal battle to help a (or a) friend.

  6. Daily Movie Recommendation: Okja (2017),Genre- Adventure@themovieplace3273d

    MV5BMjQxMTcxNDgxN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTczNTIzMjI@.V1_UY1200_CR89,0,630,1200_AL.jpg

Today I selected the movie Okja (2017) for the daily movie recommendation which is directed by Joon-ho Bong from which I've recommended the movie Snowpiercer (2013) ten days ago and i told you in the article that i will see Okja and that's what I did. I was expecting something else from this movie when I first saw the trailer but I can not say that I was finally disappointed only the fact that I imagine the story to head on other subject. Let's get started and see why I liked this movie and I'll explain a few things about it.

    1.JPG

The story begins with Lucy Mirando who is the boss of a multi-national company named Mirando started by her grandfather who was a terrible man. At its inauguration Lucy presents the super piggy which is a small and beautiful creature discovered in a Chile farm, and those from Mirando they brought it to their farm in Arizona where their scientists they grew up and made different studies ,and they managed to produce 26 piglets which were then sent to each of the 26 subsidiaries of the Mirando company, and than the subsidiaries they offered the piggys to the best local farmer with a good reputation.

    2.JPG

I really liked the relationship between the little girl and the pig becoming one of the best friends seen in a movie and although I was expecting something else from this movie he managed to surprise me even if it was another subject than I expected.

    3.JPG

The cast included big names like Jake Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton and Paul Dano which had a good performance the best being Jake Gyllenhaal who had a different role from what I saw but also Tilda Swinton it was very good having to play two roles of Lucy Mirando and Nancy Mirando. Besides the adventure the movie it also contains some action scenes and drama who manage to touch a delicate subject of the human race. In conclusion is a stranger movie and those who have seen something from this director already know this which for some may seem to be a trash and for others something interesting and new and I'm curious about your opinions , also don't forget to request the movie genre which you like to be recommended for tomorrow.

    My rating 8/10

You can request a genre ( without anime, documentary )for the next day and if you want to participate you nead to write down in a comment the genre of the movie you want to be recommended for the next day,but if there are more genres required for that day, the winner will be that one who will have the most votes from the others who want the same genre like you.
