Hello, friends! Today I'm here to bring you my review of this movie I've been wanting to see, I'm talking about Rental Family.
Trama - Plot
La historia gira en torno a Philips, un actor estadounidense que está viviendo en Japón, al que le cuesta conseguir papeles importantes y termina siendo contratado por una agencia de familia en alquiler. Este negocio trata de ofrecerles a los clientes la actuación perfecta de lo que requieran, así Philips va a actuar de novio, padre, amigo o como espectador de alguna ceremonia. Pero, este trabajo pondrá a prueba su capacidad de separar la actuación de las emociones personales, y nos dará una lección de cómo pueden funcionar los vínculos y lo que estás dispuesto a hacer para llenar algún vacío emocional.
The story revolves around Philips, an American actor living in Japan who struggles to land major roles and ends up being hired by a family rental agency. This business aims to offer clients the perfect performance of whatever they require, so Philips will act as a boyfriend, father, friend, or spectator at a ceremony. However, this job will test his ability to separate acting from personal emotions, and it will teach us a lesson about how bonds can work and what you are willing to do to fill an emotional void.
Reseña - Review
Es una trama interesante y nos pone un poco en jaque como individuos que se mueven dentro de una sociedad. Creo que muchas veces olvidamos lo que es vincularse de verdad con el otro y terminamos recurriendo a estos servicios porque no sabemos gestionar la verdad y es más fácil fingir. Es interesante ver cómo Philips no logra separar esta cuestión moral que implica sentir que está mintiendo al fingir ser alguien que no es, a pesar de que su profesión sea la de actuar. Él es consciente que en este trabajo está desempeñando un rol importante que podría cambiar la vida de la otra persona, o quizá no, casi que oficia de psicólogo personal. Esto también demuestra lo estigmatizada que está el tema de la salud mental en países orientales.
It's an interesting plot and it puts us a little on the spot as individuals who move within society. I think that we often forget what it means to truly connect with others and end up resorting to these services because we don't know how to handle the truth and it's easier to pretend. It's interesting to see how Philips can't separate this moral issue of feeling like he's lying by pretending to be someone he's not, even though his job is to act. He's aware that in this job he's playing an important role that could change the other person's life, or maybe not, almost like he's acting as a personal psychologist. This also shows how stigmatized the issue of mental health is in Eastern countries.
Después está la otra cara de que termina involucrándose tanto que empieza a creerse ese papel, como le pasó al tener que fingir ser el padre de una niña. Entonces se termina encariñando y olvida que es un servicio temporal y que en algún momento no tendrá más lazos con estas personas. Para el protagonista es difícil acostumbrarse a esto.
Then there is the other side of the coin, where he ends up getting so involved that he starts to believe in that role, as happened when he had to pretend to be a girl's father. He ends up becoming attached and forgets that it is a temporary service and that at some point he will no longer have any ties to these people. It is difficult for the protagonist to get used to this.
Para uno como espectador también puede ser un choque ¿por qué una madre querría hacerle creer a su hija que un hombre que no tiene nada que ver es su padre? ¿Por qué motivo una hija no querría cumplir el deseo de su padre enfermo de llevarlo al lugar donde le pide y tiene que contratar a alguien para que pase tiempo con él rememorando sus momentos más felices? ¿Por qué contratar a una persona para que se haga pasar por tu amante y humillarla delante de tu esposa para que vea que no fue nada importante, en vez de llevar a la verdadera amante? En fin, preguntas que no tienen respuestas. Puedo llegar a entenderlo, y juzgarlo, además que me hace pensar en que la sociedad está un poco rota.
For someone watching, it can also be shocking. Why would a mother want to make her daughter believe that a man who has nothing to do with her is her father? Why would a daughter not want to fulfill her sick father's wish to take him to the place he asks for and have to hire someone to spend time with him reminiscing about his happiest moments? Why hire someone to pretend to be your lover and humiliate her in front of your wife so she can see that it was nothing important, instead of bringing your real lover? In short, questions that have no answers. I can understand it, and judge it, but it also makes me think that society is a little broken.
Otros momentos fueron bastantes significativos, sabemos que las costumbres orientales pueden ser más estrictas y es por ello que deben fingir momentos o situaciones para salir de un apuro. También siento que es una película que habla de los tiempos que corren, cada vez cuesta más construir vínculos que valgan la pena y hay quienes necesitan llenar esos vacíos emocionales. Es una forma más de pagar por afecto y por perdón. La culpa también es importante en la trama y el servicio de disculpas es uno de los más solicitados.
Other moments were quite significant. We know that Eastern customs can be stricter, which is why they have to fake moments or situations to get out of a tight spot. I also feel that this is a film that speaks to the times we live in. It is increasingly difficult to build meaningful relationships, and there are those who need to fill those emotional voids. It is another way of paying for affection and forgiveness. Guilt also plays an important role in the plot, and apology services are among the most requested.
Como verán, es una película bastante reflexiva, aunque no es para nada compleja en su forma. Es entretenida y emotiva, ideal para pasar una tarde agradable viendo algo con un lindo mensaje acerca de las relaciones humanas, la soledad y los prejuicios que cargamos. Así que la recomiendo un montón. Me pareció una linda película para disfrutar tanto solo como en compañía.
As you can see, it's a pretty thoughtful movie, even though it's not complex at all. It's entertaining and moving, perfect for spending a nice afternoon watching something with a sweet message about human relationships, loneliness, and the prejudices we carry around. So, I totally recommend it. I thought it was a lovely movie to enjoy either alone or with company.
