Saturday Night Live is one of the longest-running American television shows on the air, and it has taken a long time for a film to be made about the beginnings of this television show that has become part of American popular culture. In October of this year SNL will be fifty years on the air.

In the past I have seen some sketches or programs found on the Internet, also from time to time I come across some article or news of some famous guest, which is one of the attractions of the program. It is a humorous program with parodic sketches, either current events or personalities. The political component is also present.

Filmmaker Jason Reitman is in charge of writing the script and directing this film. The filmmaker has always been in show business. He is Ivan Reitman's son, so he knows a lot about SNL, plus he was also part of his team. Jason Reitman caught the world's attention with his film Juno and since then his film career has yielded several interesting titles. Something that stands out in his filmography is that his movies, even if they are supported by big studios, he gives them a touch of indie cinema that the viewer likes. Even the films I liked the least (the last two Ghostbusters) have their charm.

Saturday Night is a film that recreates what was the first broadcast of the program on the night of October 11, 1975. A television program that would be totally different. A risky bet. A program of sketch comedy with many unknown comedians. It was a time when the traditional was what triumphed and according to the film, those responsible for the television network did not even have faith in that program, it was like an experiment that they left to end up failing and return to the usual schedule of late shows.

En octubre de este año SNL cumplirá cincuenta años en antena.

En el pasado he visto algunos sketches o programas que se encuentran en Internet, también de vez en cuando me encuentro con algún artículo o noticia de algún invitado famoso, que es uno de los atractivos del programa. Es un programa de humor con scketch paródicos, ya sea de actualidad o de personalidades. El componente político también está presente.

El cineasta Jason Reitman es el encargado de escribir el guión y dirigir esta película. El cineasta siempre ha estado en el mundo del espectáculo. Es hijo de Ivan Reitman, así que sabe mucho de SNL, además de que también formó parte de su equipo. Jason Reitman llamó la atención del mundo con su película Juno y desde entonces su carrera cinematográfica ha dado varios títulos interesantes. Algo que destaca en su filmografía es que sus películas, aunque estén apoyadas por grandes estudios, él les da un toque de cine indie que gusta al espectador. Incluso las películas que menos me han gustado (las dos últimas de Cazafantasmas) tienen su encanto.

Saturday Night es una película que recrea lo que fue la primera emisión del programa la noche del 11 de octubre de 1975. Un programa de televisión que sería totalmente diferente. Una apuesta arriesgada. Un programa de sketches cómicos con muchos cómicos desconocidos. Era una época en la que lo tradicional era lo que triunfaba y según cuenta la película, los responsables de la cadena de televisión ni siquiera tenían fe en aquel programa, era como un experimento que dejaron para que terminara fracasando y volver al horario habitual de emisiones de late shows.

Lorne Michaels is the protagonist of the film. The show's creator even has some doubts. Although he tries to sell the program as the best, he doesn't seem to have a clear idea of what the show is about. On the other hand, the obstacles just keep coming and increasing. Within hours of going on the air, problems are piling up. Going over budget, having the censor watch and make changes to the script, cutting sketches due to lack of time, sound and lighting failures, union bureaucracy, pressure from executives, fights between actors and a thousand other problems.

The film immerses us in that night full of chaos. A lot of chaos. The filmmaker manages to make us live a madness from beginning to end. The dizzying pace, the constant appearance of actors for which he had a great cast, each with their minutes to shine. Going from one crazy scene to the next. Certainly, all this chaos can overwhelm the viewer. Some may be repulsed, others will love it, because these well choreographed and well acted rampages, I quite enjoy them.

Many tracking shots and sequence shots, to accelerate the pace and give that feeling of disorder, because something is always happening. Lots of people talking fast and walking, a formula that works. The filmmaker's work is admirable, because all the chaos we see on screen is the product of a very planned work that requires hours of rehearsal and coordination.

Maybe if you don't know anything about the TV series, this movie is a bit confusing, because it is specially made to produce nostalgia. See actors playing old sitcom stars, some still alive and some who are no more. John Belushi is one of those stars who faded early and here we will be reminded.

The cast is fantastic. Very great, it would take me a whole post to name each of them and their characters. Now, let's not expect them to go deep. It's a movie that takes place in a single night, so everyone will have their moment.

Lorne Michaels es el protagonista de la película. El creador del programa tiene incluso algunas dudas. Aunque intenta vender el programa como el mejor, parece que no tiene una idea clara de lo que trata el show. Por otra parte, los obstáculos no dejan de presentarse y aumentar. A pocas horas de salir al aire, los problemas se acumulan. Salirse del presupuesto, que el censor vigile y haga cambios en el guión, recortar sketches por falta de tiempo, fallos de sonido e iluminación, burocracia sindical, presiones de los ejecutivos, peleas entre actores y mil problemas más.

La película nos sumerge en esa noche llena de caos. Mucho caos. El cineasta consigue hacernos vivir una locura de principio a fin. El ritmo vertiginoso, la constante aparición de actores para lo que contó con un gran elenco, cada uno con sus minutos para brillar. Pasando de una escena loca a la siguiente. Ciertamente, todo este caos puede abrumar al espectador. A algunos les puede producir rechazo, a otros les ecantara, porque estos desmadres bien coreografiados e interpretados, yo los disfruto bastante.

Muchos travelling y planos secuencia, para acelerar el ritmo y dar esa sensación de desorden, porque siempre está pasando algo. Mucha gente hablando rápido y caminando, una fórmula que funciona. El trabajo del cineasta es admirable, porque todo el caos que vemos en pantalla es producto de un trabajo muy planificado que requiere horas de ensayo y cordinacion.

Quizá si no se conoce nada de la serie de televisión, esta película resulte un poco confusa, porque está hecha especialmente para producir nostalgia. Ver a actores interpretando a viejas estrellas de la comedia, algunos aún vivos y otros que ya no están. John Belushi es una de esas estrellas que se desvaneció pronto y aquí se nos recordará.

El elenco es fantástico. Muy grande, me llevaría un post entero nombrar a cada uno de ellos y sus personajes. Ahora bien, no esperemos que profundicen. Es una película que transcurre en una sola noche, así que cada uno tendrá su momento.
