Hello, people of the internet! Today we're going to talk about a rather delicate topic which is explored in the series I'm going to review. To what extent does love and protection turn into harassment and kidnapping? At what point does pressure turn the victim into a victimizer? Read on to find out what I'm talking about.

Hoy hablaremos de un tema bastante delicado el cual, explora la serie de la que haré la review. ¿Hasta que punto el amor y la protección se convierte en hostigamiento y secuestro? ¿En qué momento la presión convierte a la víctima en victimario? Sigan leyendo para enterarse de que estoy hablando.
The first thing to keep in mind is that I will talk about the series without any spoilers (the post will have spoilers) since the series is based on a real case of some years ago and for all of us who knew about the tragedy, the whole outcome and the repercussions, let's say that logically we already knew what the end of the series would be, so I don't take it as spoilers. However, if you want to watch the serie and don't know anything about the real case, I recommend you not to continue reading.
Lo primero para tener en cuenta es que, hablaré de la serie sin tapujos (tendrá spoilers el post) ya que la serie está basada en un caso real de hace ya algunos años y para todos los que supimos de la tragedia, todo el desenlace y las repercusiones, digamos que lógicamente ya sabíamos cuál seria el final de la serie, entonces no lo tomo como spoilers. As those of you who have read my reviews already know, we will break down the series into several important features: Story, character development, script, performances, photography, setting, climax and descenlace or ending. Without further ado, let's begin.
Como ya saben los que han leído mis reseñas, desglosaremos la serie en varias características importantes: Historia, desarollo de personajes, guión, actuaciones, fotografía, ambientación, climax y descenlace o final. Sin más dilación, comencemos.
Let's start with the first point: History.

Since the series is based on a real event, we are not going to give too much credit to the producers, because they already had a very good story in their hands, but we must give them credit for how they carried it out in the audiovisual material.
Dado a que la serie está basada en un hecho real, no vamos a darle demasiado crédito a los productores, debido a que ya tenían en las manos una muy buena historia, pero sí hay que darles créditos de como la llevaron a cabo en el material audiovisual.
The series tells the story of Dee Dee and Gypsy Blanchard, a devoted mother caring for her sick teenage daughter. According to Dee Dee, her daughter had leukemia when she was a child, muscular dystrophy, apnea, defective chromosomes, epilepsy, visual and hearing problems, diabetes, mild mental retardation, among other medical complications. For this reason, Dee Dee didn't work, who had to be under constant supervision.
La serie nos cuenta la vida de Dee Dee y Gypsy Blanchard, una madre abnegada que cuida de su hija adolescente enferma. Segun Dee Dee, su hija tuvo leucemia cuando era pequeña, tenía distrofia muscular, apnea, cromosomas defectuosos, epilepsia, problemas visuales y auditivos, diabetes, retraso mental ligero, entre otras complicaciones médicas. Por esta razón, Dee Dee no trabajaba, porque tenía que cuidar de su hija que debía estar bajo supervisión constante.
It turns out that the thing was not exactly like that, but it was all a lie. Gypsy didn't have any of these diseases, but her mother suffered from Munchausen Syndrome type II, also called Munchausen by proxy and that is why she forced her daughter to fake these diseases and at other times made her sick on purpose to get everyone's attention.
Resulta ser que la cosa no era precisamente así, sino que todo era una mentira. Gypsy no tenía ninguna de esas enfermedades, sino que su madre padecía del Síndrome de Munchausen de tipo II, también denominado Munchausen por poder, y es por eso que obligaba a su hija a fingir estas enfermedades y en otras ocasiones la enfermaba a propósito para obtener atención de todo el mundo.

Eventually Gypsy meets a boy online (behind her mother's back of course) and they eventually begin a romantic relationship. Tired of her mother's abuse, Gypsy plans to run away with this boy and coerces him into killing her mother (the impediment to their life together). The boy does in fact kill Dee Dee and they both escape, but not for long as the police eventually catch up them and it's Gypsy who is responsible for revealing all the gory details.
Eventualmente Gypsy conoce a un chico por internet (a escondidas de su madre por supuesto) y con el tiempo comienzan una relación sentimental. Cansada de los abusos de su madre, Gypsy planea escapar con este chico y lo coacciona para que mate a su madre (el impedimento para su vida juntos). El chico en efecto mata a Dee Dee y ambos escapan, aunque no por mucho tiempo, ya que la policía termina dando con ellos y es Gypsy quien se encarga de revelar todos los escabrosos detalles.
The story in the series, is approached from Gypsy's point of view in almost its entirety and that is how the viewer can feel at the beginning of this, the empathy and love between the two and how step by step that relationship degenerates to the point that the viewer feels like Gypsy, fed up with the abuse and hoping that the girl can escape and go far away.
La historia en la serie, es abordada desde el punto de vista de Gypsy en casi su totalidad, y es así como el espectador puede sentir al inicio de ésta, la empatía y el amor entre ambas y como poco a poco esa relación se va degenerando hasta el punto que el espectador se siente como Gypsy, harto de los abusos y esperando que la chica pueda escapar e irse muy lejos.
This is a plus because by approaching the story in this way we can appreciate from the inside the decline of this small family, and the atrocious consequences that some mental illnesses can unleash.
Esto es un punto a favor ya que al abordar la historia de esta manera podemos apreciar desde dentro el declive de esta pequeña familia y las consecuencias atroces que algunas enfermedades mentales pueden desencadenar.

Let's move on to character development. Here I have to say that the three main characters are the ones who steal the show: Dee Dee in the beginning is a concerned and loving mother, but as the series progresses, she becomes more and more violent and intimidating, it's precisely what we call Character Development that evolution for better or worse in a character.
Pasemos al desarrollo de personajes. Aquí tengo que decir que los tres personajes principales son quienes se roban el show: Dee Dee en un principio es una madre preocupada y amorosa, pero a medida que la serie avanza, se hace cada vez más violenta e intimidante, es precisamente lo que llamamos Desarrollo de personajes esa evolución para bien o para mal en un personaje.
Gypsy is a shy and childish girl who gradually unravels, exploring adult characteristics such as sexuality and even becomes a totally different person from the one we initially visualized.
Gypsy es una chica tímida y aniñada que va desenvolviéndose, explorando características adultas como lo es la sexualidad e incluso, se vuelve una persona totalmente diferente de quien visualizamos en un inicio.

As for Nicholas Godejohn, it's not that he's had a pretty marked development, but being a boy with autism, low IQ and dissociative identity disorder, the fact that he went from being a somewhat erratic kid to being the murderer of his girlfriend's mother... there's quite a stretch.
En cuanto a Nicholas Godejohn, no es que haya tenido un desarrollo bastante marcado, pero tratándose de un muchacho con autismo, bajo coeficiente intelectual y desorden de identidad disociativo, el hecho de que pasase a ser un chico un poco errático a ser el asesino de la madre de su novia... hay bastante trecho.
As for the script and the performances, everything was perfect. The conversations between the characters, besides helping their development, also help the viewer to understand the situation from different points of view.
En cuanto al guión y las actuaciones, todo estuvo perfecto. Las conversaciones entre los personajes, además de que ayuda a que se desarrollen, también ayuda al espectador a entender la situación desde los diferentes puntos de vista.
The performances of the three main characters in the stories were supreme. But I must admit that the one who surprised me the most, was Calum Worthy, who plays Nicholas Godejohn, since the last role I had seen him in, was Dez in the Disney series «Austin and Ally», and clearly, both characters are too far apart. Without a doubt, this guy is an excellent actor.
Las actuaciones de los tres protagonistas de la historia estuvieron supremas. Pero debo admitir que quién más me sorprendió fue Calum Worthy, quien interpreta a Nicholas Godejohn, ya que el último papel en el que lo había visto había sido a Dez, en la serie de Disney Austin y Ally y claramente, ambos personajes distan demasiado. Sin dudas, este chico es un excelente actor.

Talking about the photography and the setting, it's very well worked. At the beginning of the serie we see many vivid colors, the sky is almost always blue and there are many shots where the sunlight is seen projecting the characters, however, as the serie progresses and things become more sordid, the photography and shots change to a more opaque atmosphere, although the same vivid colors are still on screen, its coloration lacks light and brightness. There are more dark or night scenes, or with a totally cloudy sky. The examples below:

Al inicio de la serie vemos muchos colores vivos, el cielo casi siempre es azul y hay bastantes planos donde se ve la luz del sol proyectando a los personajes, sin embargo, a medida que la serie avanza y las cosas van tornándose más sórdidas, la fotografía y planos cambian a una ambientación más opaca, aunque siguen estando los mismos colores vivos en pantalla, su coloración tiene falta de luz y brillo. Speaking of the climax of the serie and the denouement, it was very well done. They took the statements of both (Gypsy and his boyfriend) and brought them to the screen, so we can see illustrated in the scenes the statements of they.
Hablando del clímax de la serie y el desenlace, estuvo muy bien hecho todo. Tomaron las declaraciones de ambos jóvenes y los llevaron a la pantalla, así pues, podemos ver ilustrado en las escenas las declaraciones de los muchachos.
The scene of Dee Dee's death in terms of photography and shots is excellent. The first thing we can see is Gypsy handing the knife and gloves to Nick, and followed by a shot of Gypsy walking ahead leading her boyfriend through the house. The shot follows them from the front and then Nick is seen behind Gypsy, taller and with a knife in his hands, which makes him look more menacing.
La escena de la muerte de Dee Dee a nivel de fotografía y planos es excelsa. lo primero que podemos ver es a Gypsy entregarle el cuchillo y los guantes a Nick y seguido de eso, un plano en el que Gypsy camina adelante guiando a su novio por la casa. Gypsy, then enters the bathroom and the camera pans to the picture of the lighthouse, the one in front of which Dee Dee and Gypsy sat so many times to fix her up for some event, and then the camera follows a nervous Gypsy whose body language denotes anxiety. There is an awkward silence that, despite lasting no more than a few seconds, seems eternal... suddenly Dee Dee is heard waking up and a struggle is heard.
Posteriormente Gypsy entra al baño y la cámara se sitúa frente al cuadro del faro, aquel frente al que tantas veces se sentaron Dee Dee y Gypsy a arreglarla para algún evento, y luego la cámara sigue a una nerviosa Gypsy cuyo lenguaje corporal denota ansiedad. In this scene the shot changes, the camera begins to pan around Gypsy as she hears the screams (echoing) of her mother and the fighting in general. The shot switches back to the lighthouse frame and then back to Gypsy, who is sitting on the floor, covering her ears.

The soundtrack also helps a lot as it maintains the suspense before the climax, then builds and is soft again at the end of the climax until it goes completely silent, and there is an expectant silence, until Nick knocks on the door.
El soundtrack también ayuda muchísimo ya que mantiene el suspenso previo al climax, posteriormente se incrementa y es suave de nuevo al final de éste hasta que se enmudece por completo y hay un silencio espectante, hasta que Nick toca la puerta.
Now let's talk about my opinion on the case.
Ahora hablemos de mi opinión en el caso.
The first thing to analyze is... What is Munchausen syndrome? It's a mental disorder in which the sufferer has an impulsive need to obtain attention from others through compassion. This disorder has two aspects: Munchausen type I and Munchausen type II (or by proxy). The first one refers to when the patient makes himself sick in order to generate the compassion of other people (not to be confused with hypochondria, in which case patients believe themselves to be sick and are always worried, but don't go so far as to attempt against their health). In type II Munchausen's syndrome, the patient generates illnesses in other people close to him or her (usually children) in order to obtain the compassion of other people and even take advantage of them, be praised by others, etc.
Lo primero que debemos analizar es... ¿qué es el síndrome de Munchausen? Es un desorden mental en el que quien lo padece, tiene una necesidad impulsiva en obtener atención de los demás mediante la compasión. Este desorden tiene dos vertientes: Munchausen tipo I y Munchausen tipo II (o por poder). El primero se refiere a cuando el paciente se enferma a sí mismo para generar la compasión de sus seres queridos y allegados (no confundir con hipocondría, en cuyo caso los pacientes se creen enfermos y están preocupados siempre, pero no llegan a atentar contra su salud). En el síndrome de Munchausen de tipo II, el paciente genera enfermedades en otras personas allegadas o cercanas (comúnmente hijos) para obtener la compasión de las demás personas e incluso sacarles provecho, ser elogiadas por los demás, etc.

We speak of child abuse when referring to this syndrome because usually, patients of the disease resort to invasive methods to achieve real illnesses or symptoms in the victims, for example: putting bleach in food, self-medicating healthy children, depriving the infant of normal development for fear that they will be hurt, etc.

It's the syndrome that Dee Dee Blanchard suffered from and of which she made her daughter a victim. But while the tortures (because yes, those were tortures) that Dee Dee did to Gypsy are unjustifiable and unforgivable, Gypsy ended up vitimizing her mother with what she did.

No creo que después de que la policía y los vecinos la viesen caminar, dudarían de sus palabras.

Seeing her walk (after she was supposedly unable to do so) and her claims of abuse would have been enough to have Dee Dee arrested and imprisoned as she deserved for all the atrocities committed. However, the path Gypsy decided to take, leaves the matter in a neutral position, the victim can no longer be defended because she became the victimizer.
El verla caminar (después que supuestamente no podía hacerlo) y las declaraciones de abuso por parte de ella, habrían bastado para que detuvieran a Dee Dee y la encarcelaran como lo merecía por todas las atrocidades cometidas. Gypsy planned the murder of his mother in great detail, she was the mastermind behind the crime, she manipulated and took advantage of a boy whose mental state was deplorable, inciting him through one of his personalities, which was a murderous vampire (how convenient that Gypsy asked this personality for the murder of his mother, isn't it?) if she didn't ask «Victor» somewhat they both called "the evil side of Nick" the murder would not have taken place, that's why he appealed to this personality of the young man.

The young man's mother said that Gypsy's attitude was relaxed and calm after they had both committed such a crime and furthermore, it was she who wrote the messages on her mother's Facebook page to take the blame away from them and also to carry out the police investigation on the other hand.

If Charles Manson got a life sentence without ever touching his victims? Why not Gypsy, because she had been abused by her mother before? It was not a self-defense murder, she was killed while the woman slept, it was premeditated and planned for months. She also didn't suffer from any mental condition unlike her boyfriend who according to psychological tests was perfectly manipulable and manageable.
Si Charles Manson obtuvo cadena perpetua sin haber tocado a sus victimas... ¿Porque Gypsy no? ¿Por haber sufrido abusos por parte de su madre anteriormente? No fue un asesinato en defensa propia, la mataron mientras la mujer dormía, fue algo premeditado y planeado durante meses. Ella tampoco sufría de alguna afección mental a diferencia de su novio que según exámenes psicológicos era perfectamente manipulable y manejable.

In fact, after they were arrested and the whole judicial process, Gypsy completely forgot about Nick, because of course, he was no longer of any use to her, she had already obtained what she wanted, to get rid of her mother and have the possibility of living peacefully in freedom, something that Nick will not be able to do despite being part of the same crime.

I don't mean to justify Dee Dee Blanchard, of course. What she did with her daughter is an abominable thing, but to justify Gypsy's actions as low as she did personally seems too much to me.
Con esto no quiero justificar a Dee Dee Blanchard, claro está. Lo que hizo con su hija es una cosa abominable, pero justificar las acciones tan bajas de Gypsy en lo personal me parece demasiado.
Going back to the serie, I think it's a great audiovisual material and I recommend you to watch it one hundred percent because even though it has some inconsistencies with the main story, they are not serious and still tell a good and consistent story that keeps the viewer entertained.
Volviendo a la serie, creo que es un estupendo material audiovisual y se los recomiendo ver al cien por cien, porque pese a que tienes algunas incongruencias con la historia principal, de igual forma no son graves y sigue relatando una buena historia consecuente y que mantiene al espectador entretenido.
