    Synopsis

Hogarth Hughes is a little boy who lives in Maine, USA. In the year 1957 the world was going through the Cold War and the Soviet Union was launching artificial satellites. One day Hogarth was walking through the woods when out of nowhere he finds a huge iron giant. It is a great shock for him, even more so when he notices that the giant can communicate but does not remember where he comes from.

Still, Hogarth befriends the Giant who is very curious and peaceful, but of course this would not be well received by everyone...

"It is bad to kill, but it is not bad to die"

Perhaps the reason why this film went unnoticed is because despite being for kids, the truth is that it has a shocking message that many may consider unsuitable for children. The story poses deep moral dilemmas, those that adults have not been able to resolve, such as the use of weapons, politics, tolerance and death.

Some may argue that these are not topics for children, but I believe that not only should they be dealt with in this type of stories but that they carry a good message, as difficult as it may seem. The Iron Giant deals with these issues not from an arbitrary perspective but by posing them as social problems that no matter how old you are, you will always be affected by what happens in the world, to a greater or lesser extent. What happens outside has a direct influence on you, on your development and on your mind.

However, the story is so well constructed that it does not frame these issues in a boring and serious way, but rather it took care to create jovial characters that would explain the message in a subtle but understandable, as well as entertaining way. These messages must be transmitted in this way, not directly but understandable enough to plant an idea that would later germinate according to a certain criteria, when the child grows up.

I was that little girl. It is unthinkable that at 7 or 8 years old I understood the message perfectly, on the contrary, I only saw pleasant characters living their adventures, but later on I realized how incredibly deep everything really was.

But I insist, that was the idea, which was perfectly achieved. The characters are the perfect tool to achieve this since they are endearing, especially the great and gentle giant who looked at the world through the eyes of a tourist, who discovers everything for the first time. He gradually learns human nature, the way things work, he sees the good things but also the terribly bad ones, although his friend Hogarth also took it upon himself, from his childlike innocence, to show him that in the end the good is more important.

We clearly see how the external influences our behavior, as well as our own nature. Humanity is such a complex phenomenon that it is difficult even for a machine to understand. One of the most complicated aspects is death, that issue so feared to face, even more so in a war context. The truth is that it is inevitable, it will come at any moment for absolutely everyone.

In this film, the crux of the matter is that, on limited occasions, some can choose how to leave, and ask yourself: If you could, would you choose to die for a greater good? It's not like it's an easy decision to make, but there are people so altruistic, so selfless that they are capable of giving everything to protect a greater good, something bigger than their own lives.

We also see how difficult it is to let someone else go, the mourning for a loved one that at the moment can feel like agony, but eventually it passes and you learn to live with that pain but also with the memory of how beautiful it was. It's those life lessons that make this film an incredibly moving story. As a child I cried because the Giant simply died, but as an adult I understand it better and that makes it even sadder. He died understanding that it was a noble, necessary sacrifice.

It is at this point that we see a bit of the psychology of the hero, someone who is willing to sacrifice himself to protect others. The Giant learns this from Hogarth's idol, Superman, and although it is an obviously fictional role model, the truth is that by presenting a character who does not have the same characteristics as Superman but who can be just as noble and brave, he can also become a hero.

It does not matter the context in which you find yourself, it does not matter the way in which you were born, in the end you have something inside you, in your own abilities that you can use to do good, that you can use to change the course of things, to decide and assert yourself. This film teaches us that you can make the changes that are necessary to achieve a better life. It is up to you to make that decision and face it.

For me, this film is a treasure of animated children's cinema. It is exciting, entertaining and has powerful messages that are valuable to anyone. It should also be noted that for a low budget and the time in which it was made, the animation is fluid, quite well done and has a striking style.

For those who have seen it, it will surely bring back as much nostalgia as it did for me because it is a very moving story that makes more than one person cry, but it is worth watching it even more than once...

    ¡Hola, Hive!✨

  2. My opinion about the movie: The Iron Giant [ENG/ESP]@leisasa929d

Hola, amigos.

Hello, friends. Today I want to talk about a movie that I loved during my childhood, so much so that I still remember it almost in its entirety. I'm talking about The Iron Giant, a movie that despite being from 1999, is still an excellent animated proposal.

    El_gigante_de_hierro-689176213-large.jpg Source

I first saw this movie when I was about 10 years old. As a child, it captivated me, and one of the reasons it did was its story. What child or teenager wouldn't want a friend like that?

The plot revolves around a boy named Hogarth Hughes who comes across a giant metal robot that has fallen from the sky. Despite its intimidating appearance, the boy and the robot develop a unique and true friendship. The boy does everything he can to keep the existence of this iron giant a secret.

It's a movie that's created at the end of the Cold War. It also plays with this situation. This has a well-made script, where it manages to make you feel as a child and choose good over evil in an educational way.

One of the strong points of the film are the characters. Hogarth is a curious and brave child who represents the innocence of childhood. But the center of attention is the Giant. Despite his monstrous appearance, he becomes a symbol of pure goodness and friendship. Being unable to remember his origin makes him look innocent, similar to a child. It's impossible not to fall in love with this character, and his relationship with Hogarth. Highlighting messages like tolerance and fear of the unknown, although the one that captivated me the most is friendship and sacrifice. Reminding us of the importance of choosing who we want to be and how we want to be perceived by others.

    Iron-Giant-1999-bann.jpg Source

I was struck by the giant's facial expressions at the time. Without needing to speak, he was able to convey feelings. Something that deeply captivated me.

Music is also important; since when we listen to songs like The Giant's Dream, we immediately associate it with this movie. In an era where artificial intelligence and automation. The Iron Giant poses important questions about how we relate to technology and how it can be both a positive and destructive force.

This is a movie that remains one of my favorites, and for good reason. As a child I was left wanting a second part. The combination of lovable characters and timeless messages make it a classic worth watching.

  3. Review: The iron giant | Reseña: El gigante de hierro | 1999 | [Eng/Esp]@naitreart1096d

    ENGLISH

There are many people who consider that animated films are always aimed at a child audience and certain film studios have directed it in that direction, perhaps currently by the theme of no longer talking about certain topics has influenced a lot, but today, I saw an animated film of 1999 that I can assure you, has a story that is not for children although it was released for that audience, the difference is that for those years were given many freedoms on the stories, therefore, today I want to talk about "The Iron Giant".

    Source

The movie "The Iron Giant" was directed by Brad Bird and was released in 1999, the story is based on a novel by a British writer named Ted Hughes. The film, like most of them, has a central storyline, but, although it is somewhat unnoticed, there are different fragments of stories, both of characters and situations, which include real issues such as wars, the holocaust, government representations, weapons... All this in an animated film that clearly makes sense to be set in 1957 when the cold war was going on.

The film begins by showing us the space and a kind of meteorite falling to earth, showing that what landed in the sea was a giant. Then we meet our protagonist, Hogarth Hughes, a little boy who lives with his mother, she has to stay a little later at work so Hogarth is left alone, while watching a movie on his TV, the signal has interference so he goes out to investigate and realizes that his antenna has been damaged, he sees a series of traces which he follows and will lead him to the responsible, a rather large robot which seems to ignore him and is interested in feeding on a power plant, but ends up hurting himself and getting trapped, so little Hogarth helps him and the robot sees this as an act of friendship, is interested in our protagonist and learns from him, Hogarth discovers that the giant is not bad, he behaves like a child who is learning again and this is due to a blow to his head when he fell to the ground.

    Source

As the plot progresses, there is a government organization aimed at discovering strange events that may threaten the security of the country, more now after the launch of Sputnik, so an agent investigates and approaches to discover the iron giant, which without knowing, already considers that it is a kind of foreign technology designed to wreak more havoc in the country, This leads to a kind of quite raw events in terms of stories of humanity, making certain debates in the development of the entire film, one of the most important and although not explicitly stated, raises a question, what would happen if any weapon had consciousness or a soul, would it be used in the same way in which humanity already takes advantage of them or would prefer not to follow that path?

    Source

I feel that the messages that the film leaves goes beyond something for children, because yes, it has great meanings such as the choice of who you decide to be, that no one can decide for you, that only matters what you believe about you and others such as the importance of family, friends who are for you, but also others that perhaps more adults are more understandable, such as the reason for wars, how weapons are used only to bring destruction, internal struggles between good and bad and so many more things that while watching the movie I kept thinking that "this is not something a child would understand" and I think that just this is factor of what I will say next, a curious fact is that the movie was considered a failure, because it couldn't even raise the budget of the movie when it was released, but many years later, the film is one of the most fondly remembered, even having it as one of the best visually speaking, with the message it conveys, the complexity of the plot, I could say without fear that it is one of the most complete and beautiful films that exist.

The film has something for everyone, it has funny moments, moments of overcoming, uncertainty, fear, joy, not so happy feelings... It really is a set of pieces that fit together perfectly as the story progresses. The way of connecting with the robot and the child, is undoubtedly the magic of the film, here you have me, a 26 year old excited by scenes that, although I did not remember, now have a place stored in my heart and this is what movies should aspire to, to transcend over time.

    Source

I fully recommend the film and I hope that the brevity of the plot that I told you is a hint to arouse curiosity to see it, in my reviews I don't like to tell the whole development and end of the film, because I feel that it loses a little the joke that it calls your attention but if you already know what will happen is a kind of spoiler and I don't like to do that, so, I leave the ending to uncertainty but saying that the movie is really worth seeing once in a lifetime, either for the plot, for its beautiful visual work and for the feeling it ends up leaving when it ends, give it a chance, an opportunity that it didn't have when it was released and I'm sad that it was like that but that it is currently considered a gem of cinema is a small compensation.

Thank you very much for reading me, dear friends, I hope it wasn't such a heavy reading, I tried to make it as interesting as possible, so I hope you enjoyed it. I hope you are feeling great, have a happy day everyone!

  4. Netflixing: The Iron Giant@talanhorne3002d

Since I've started Netflixing, I've reviewed one or two properties that were on the brink of being removed from the platform.

Today, I will review a film that has barely been added to Netflix, in the form of The Iron Giant.

Why it has been added to Netflix's lineup out of the blue is anyone's guess, but the movie seems to have attracted a fresh wave of attention recently. For some unfathomable reason.

    It's a mystery.

But in any case, it is now streaming. And seeing an opportunity to exploit...

    Ahem.

Seeing an opportunity to share the current nostalgic reexamination of the film, I have decided to make it the subject of this week's review.

But if we're going to understand The Iron Giant, we need to first be aware of its director and its history.

Brad Bird and the Disney Renaissance

When Walt Disney died, animated feature films suffered a near-fatal blow.

And while Disney was undeniably one of history's greatest entrepreneurs, the Disney style of leadership was ultimately destructive to his company.

Business writer Jim Collins calls this approach the "Genius with a Thousand Helpers" model of leadership, where a company's success depends upon the brilliance of a single person at the top of the organization, and the unquestioning obedience of everyone beneath him. This model has been responsible for the success of many companies over the years (another example would be Steve Jobs at Apple Computers), but it suffers from one obvious Achilles heel: what do you do when the "genius" leaves the company?

If the company is anything like Disney, then the answer is "wander the wilderness for forty years". The company continued to make animated features after Walt's death, but it would be decades before those films would start busting blocks again. And this dearth extended not only to Disney-produced films but to animated features across the board. Studios weren't willing to give large budgets to what were seen as profitless ventures.

So when the Disney renaissance began in 1989, and the company's movies started making bank again, a large number of non-Disney studios started producing animation again.

But too many of these simply tried to copy what Disney was doing. Which was foolish, because nobody can beat Disney at making Disney movies.

    Are you proud of yourselves?

So Brad Bird had to try extra hard to convince Warner Bros. that the correct approach was to make a departure from the Disney formula. He stepped away from the schmaltzy, showtuney, grandiose themes and motifs of the Disney renaissance to make something a little more Spielbergian.

The result was The Iron Giant---a film defined, and hampered, by the idea of what it was trying not to be.

    The Plot

It's E.T., except the alien is a robot.

I'm exaggerating, of course, but not by much.

The story is an almost beat-for-beat retelling of Spielberg's most beloved film. We get the same misunderstood youngster who needs a friend, the same ordeal of trying to conceal the creature's existence from the child's mother, the same evil government people who cause problems for everyone, and even the same revelation, at the tail end of the movie, that the alien creature can fly, and who then flies off with the misunderstood youngster.

The biggest plot difference comes from largely unimportant details between the two creatures. E.T. was a diminutive goblin with the power to restore life to wilted flowers. The Iron Giant is a 100-foot-tall robot who can laser entire cities to the ground. You would think that this difference in their powers would result in wildly different plotting, yet that doesn't quite materialize here.

You could argue that The Iron Giant plays up the Cold War backdrop of the story, but E.T. also takes place during the Cold War and is inevitably influenced by the paranoia of the time, even if it plays that card with more subtlety.

But if we ignore the similarities of plot, and focus only on the quality of these two movies, then they could not be more different.

    The Problem of Mediocrity

Brad Bird is a fantastic director.

This is the man who gave us The Incredibles and Ratatouille (ironically both properties owned by Disney). His films often possess a moderns sensibility while reveling in fantasy. He is a hitmaker, both in years past and the present day.

But The Iron Giant is a mediocre movie.

I'm pretty sure I first watched it on Cartoon Network, or perhaps on VHS. I certainly never saw it in the theater, and I was not alone. The film performed poorly with critics and audiences alike.

And I remember, at the time, thinking of it much like how I thought of Quest for CamelotFern Gully, and a host of other animated features from the 90s---just another cash grab by people who didn't know how to tell a story. That anyone now speaks of this movie with nostalgic reverence leaves me scratching my head. It certainly seems undeserving of cult-classic status.

Honestly, its problems are just too glaring to overlook. If I might list a few:

    • The voice acting is forced and unconvincing.
    • The villain is a shallow stereotype given no development.
    • The characters don't invite us into their lives or give us more than superficial reasons to care about them.
    • The pacing is not cohesive. The story is more a sequence of events than a flowing narrative.
    • A number of scenes feel oddly clipped, as if something longer was originally planned.
    • Emotional moments are unearned and undeserved. I almost laughed out loud when, near the end, the kid tells the robot "I love you," like it was supposed to be some culminating event in the story, when it was unsupported by anything that came before.
    • A completely unnecessary character in the form of Dean, who adds nothing to the story and could be edited out even now without damaging the film (I'm tempted to try this). Yet he has a startling amount of screen time.
And it's just not that good of a movie. We've seen the whole "forbidden pet" story played out so much better in so many other places. If you hold The Iron Giant up against E.T. or How to Train Your Dragon, the many cracks in the film are easy to see.

    One Shining Exception

The one good thing I can say about this film is that the animation is beautiful.

It's important to point that out, particularly now, due to the loss (and it is a loss, in the tragic sense) of hand drawn animation in the cinematic landscape (at least in the USA). Yes, we encountered a lot of second-rate animated films in the 1990s. No, we should not abandon the art form simply because it can be abused this way.

I believe most of the nostalgic pining for this film comes from the beauty of the artwork and animation. The visual aspects, at least, were a labor of love, and indicative of the quality we would continue to get from Brad Bird as he moved on to bigger and better projects.

    My Judgment

The Iron Giant is a missable movie.

It saddens me to say that, but it's true. For all the chances this movie took, trying to be its own thing instead of copying other animated movies of its time, it did not do enough to distinguish itself as a great film.

I want to believe that if Brad Bird had been given free reign with this project, it would have been on the same level as The Incredibles. There was certainly a lot of potential in the bones of the plot, but the execution left much to be desired.

If you don't catch it on Netflix, you're not missing much. And with the wealth of other animated projects to be found here, it's hard for me to recommend it to anyone.

But if you're curious, after watching Ready Player One, to see what all the fuss is about, then I guess you can give it a whirl. Though I doubt you'll watch it more than once.
