Film Review: Wall Street (1987)@drax1516d

Films can be so important that they not only become part of popular culture, but also in many ways define the age in which they were made. However, that doesn’t mean that such films have to be extraordinarily good. One of such films is Wall Street, 1987 drama directed by Oliver Stone.

The plot is set in 1985 New York. Protagonist, played by Charlie Sheen, is Bud Fox, young man who, despite coming from humble working-class family from Queens, managed to get job in Manhattan brokerage firm Jackson Steinem & Co. He works hard as stock broker, while dreaming about becoming major Wall Street financier. His hero and role model is Gordon Gekko (played by Michael Douglas), immensely successful and powerful businessman with whom he desperately wants to work. After many unsuccessful attempts, Gekko grants him interview but Fox manages to get his attention only after casually mentioning information about Bluestar Airlines, company where his father Carl (played by Martin Sheen) works as mechanic and union representative. The company, which is financially struggling, becomes target of Gekko’s takeover, while Gekko hires Bud to manage his capital. Bud becomes successful after spying and collecting inside information about Gekko’s rival Sir Lawrence Wildman (played by Terence Stamp) and receives large amounts of money, luxury apartment and Darien Taylor (played by Daryl Hannah), attractive interior decorator who becomes his girlfriend. When he learns that Gekko’s ultimate plans with Bluestar Airlines include dissolution of the company and leaving all staff unemployed, he turns against his mentor not knowing that the price will be much higher than he anticipated.

Stone made this film shortly after Platoon, his “Oscar”-awarded retelling of Vietnam War experience. Many critics compared two films and noticed that Stone had invested somewhat less passion in this film, which isn’t that surprising, since the subject matter was somewhat less personal (Stone’s father Lou have worked as stock broker during Great Depression). Stone is, however, known as very passionate critic of American society and politics and for him the subject matter was anything but irrelevant. While Platoon dealt with American mistakes of the past, Wall Street dealt with mistakes of the present. Script, written by Stone and Stanley Weiser, was inspired by major Wall Street scandals in mid 1980s involving so-called “masters of the universe”, major financiers whose enormous success at the market was often based on inside information, stock manipulation and other illegal activities. Many of such characters and their wealth, hard to fathom for ordinary citizens, symbolised unrestrained capitalism of Reagan’s America. Stone had good fortune to have his film released shortly after October 1987 stock market crash, which reminded public of the dangers unrestrained greed at the financial markets could pose towards economy and society in general. Relevance of the subject and Stone’s “Oscar” reputation allowed for the film to do well at the box office and receive favourable reviews among critics.

Stone directed film well, but was faced with serious problem with the script. Unlike struggle for survival in Vietnamese jungles, corporate shenanigans were something quite difficult to present to ordinary audience. Stone strove for the authenticity, having characters inspired by real persons and at times giving interesting insight into the stylish and high-tech world of Wall Street finance; as such, Wall Street is often described as the first major Hollywood film in which character uses modern cell phone. However, the characters’ action are at times barely comprehensible. This problem is, to a degree, compensated with very good cast which tries to play their roles as archetypes. Charlie Sheen is quite good in the role of a young man who gets seduced by power and easy money only to fall out of grace and end seeking redemption. Sheen was, however, much better in Platoon as member of ensemble cast. Here he plays the protagonist and has misfortune of having two formidable and much better actors playing his two fathers – veteran Martin Sheen as his real and good father, while Michael Douglas plays his evil and “symbolic” father. Douglas is, in the end, actor who comes out as the real star of the film. Helped by impeccable style and armed with ability to convey charm of corporate psychopath, his character easily seduces not only young Bud but also the audience. The infamous “greed is good” speech (inspired by the speech of real life Wall Street financier Ivan Boesky) became not only the embodiment of mores of 1980s upper-class, but also a message apparently taken literally by many young men in the audience who saw Gekko as their hero and role model. Wall Street thus, inadvertently, became promotion of the very thing he tried to criticise.

The rest of the cast was adequate, with the exception of Daryl Hannah, whose character seemed redundant and whose performance was so bad that it got her Razzie for Worst Actress. Another deficiency of Wall Street is music score by Stewart Copeland, which is rather forgettable and not worthy of such ambitious film. But the greatest flaw of Wall Street was in its failure to act as a proper warning towards future generations. Instead, greed remained and financial manipulations continued until another major stock market crash, that would ultimately inspire Stone to make predictably weak sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Even those lessons weren’t learned and the world continued to get sucked into the spiral of economic ruin and wars. Because of that, Wall Street, although a good film, is likely to make some of today’s viewers bitter about decades of lost opportunities.

Saludos, el día de ayer mi amigo @ismaelgranados me comentaba sobre el concurso de la comunidad sobre nuestra película de acción favorita, ni reacción inmediata fue decir que el género de acción no es mi favorito y son pocas las películas que conocí o que me gustan en ese aspecto, la mayoría son muy viejas, sin embargo luego de analizar un poco los rasgos característicos de una película de acción me di cuenta que las películas que tienen la figura del vengador me gustan siempre que este tenga un buen desarrollo del personaje, es decir esas películas donde no tratan solamente sobre una persona que toma las armas en revancha y el mayor entrenamiento son los disparos y explosiones, en pocas palabras me gustan las películas de acción que tengan otro género involucrado bien sea drama o incluso a veces la comedia, en este caso recordé a algunos de mis vengadores favoritos como por ejemplo El cuervo , John Wick o el mismo Batman, pero estas sin figuras que no se acercan mucho a lo que un ciudadano común podría hacer cuando las circunstancias adversas destrozan su vida, es decir antes el infortunio los seres comunes no tomamos la venganza como primera opción, pero por otro lado creo que cualquier persona podría sentir empatía por un personaje como el protagonista de Asalto a Wall Street, por eso escogí esta como mi película favorita.

Greetings, yesterday my friend @ismaelgranados told me about the community contest about our favorite action movie, no immediate reaction was to say that the action genre is not my favorite and there are few movies that I knew or that I like in that aspect, most of them are very old, however after analyzing a bit the characteristic features of an action movie I realized that I like movies that have the figure of the avenger as long as he has a good character development, that is say those movies where they are not only about a person who takes up arms in revenge and the greatest training is shooting and explosions, in a nutshell I like action movies that have another genre involved, be it drama or sometimes even comedy, in this case I remembered some of my favorite avengers such as The Crow, John Wick or Batman himself, but these without figures that do not come close to what you An ordinary citizen could do when adverse circumstances destroy their life, that is, before misfortune, ordinary beings do not take revenge as a first option, but on the other hand I think that anyone could feel empathy for a character like the protagonist of Assault on Wall Street, that's why I chose this as my favorite movie.

Ustedes pensarán que solo estoy hablando solo de una película de drama, pero todo cambia de rumbo, una persona común podría igualmente haber caído en la desesperación , pero el protagonista es un ex militar así que busco la manera de cobrar venganza, es así como decide montar la casería de los grandes cabezas de wall street e ir acabando con ellos, el momento cumbre es cuando asalta el edificio donde se encuentra el jefe de la estrategia que se llevó su dinero y su vida.

Por supuesto hay muchas balas y granadas de por medio hasta que él logra estar frente a frente con el economista y hablar antes de querer asesinarlo, no quiero contar el final pero esta de nervios el desenlace. Esta película causó mucha polémica en su año de estreno en 2013, porque como todos saben aborda un tema social real y plantea el imaginario de que una persona cobre venganza por todas las personas que perdieron todo en la crisis económica del 2008, donde los poderosos no se detuvieron a pensar en las consecuencias a los ciudadanos, aunque de cierto modo no se hace justicia porque el sistema siguió siendo el mismo, el mensaje fue claro, tal como dijo el Joker en 2019 cuando la sociedad trata mal a la gente mal esta obtiene lo que merece, es un tema de salud mental poder sobrellevar la pérdida sin caer en la venganza, pero como siempre toda buena película hace pensar, en mi caso creo que esta venganza no hizo justicia, pero acaso los seres humanos no perdemos la razón cuando todo se desmorona, la vida debería ser más amable pero estas políticas económicas en el mundo son tan crueles como los asesinatos a sangre fría que cometió el protagonista.

This film caused a lot of controversy in its premiere year in 2013, because as everyone knows it deals with a real social issue and raises the imaginary that a person takes revenge for all the people who lost everything in the economic crisis of 2008, where the powerful did not they stopped to think about the consequences to the citizens, although in a certain way justice is not done because the system remained the same, the message was clear, as the Joker said in 2019 when society treats its people badly they get what it deserves, it is a matter of mental health to be able to cope with loss without resorting to revenge, but as always every good movie makes one think, in my case I think that this revenge did not do justice, but perhaps human beings do not lose our minds when everything falls apart, life should be kinder but these economic policies in the world are as cruel as the cold-blooded murders committed by the protagonist.

Plot

Bud Fox is a young and ambitious stockbroker who falls under the charm of investor Gordon Gekko. The words of father Stone were marked in the mind of him and at the time of filming Wall Street the director thought of the best possible villain: the finance shark Gordon Gekko. The choice of Michael Douglas to make the best performance of his career, which allowed him to win an Oscar, was an excellent decision. Douglas knew how to present the bad guy of the movie dreamed by all: attractive and seductive. That seduction is what Gekko incite in the character played by Charlie Sheen and in all of us.

Bud Fox, an innocent young man who in his eagerness to ascend the difficult world of finance is tempted by Gekko, the devil himself, who watches them all from his altar and believes himself untouchable. Ambition and, above all, greed are the fundamental issues. In one of the most memorable speeches of the film Gekko pronounces the words, "Greed is good". What perfectly defines the character. The film has a conventional moral, with good secondary interpretations that supply some deficiencies of Charlie Sheen. Dynamism, cruelty, exaltation of individualism and social success above all, sacralization of money and worship of capitalism as the supreme unquestionable god of the universe.

The film is very entertaining, especially in its first half, and this has great merit considering that the stock market is the only and main argument. Then it fades a bit by complicating the foundation of Bud's motivation: the disappointment with personal ambition, with reasons that nobody understands fully but that everyone enjoys.

The ethical and moral dilemmas that will arise in Bud Fox's mind due to his way of enriching himself, will contrast with the principles of work and honesty that Bud's father, Carl Fox, has always instilled in him. The fact that Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen play son and father respectively, when the actors are in the same relationship, shows a chemistry impossible to achieve in any other way between both characters.

Greed and ambition, and its contrast with hard work and effort when it comes to making money. The film is not a criticism of the system itself, but puts into question the lack of ethics and morality at the time of success.

Through the eyes of Bud Fox we see the reality of getting up when it has not yet dawned, to work hard, and still live in constant poverty, to believe that you have a good suit but that it is really cheap for men with large fortunes what makes the situation more credible to reach the peak of success and start living the real luxury.

For those of us who have studied or for those who have worked in the financial sector, Wall Street is simply perfect in its approach, both in the way of showing the different operations, as well as in the way it captures the environment and mixes chaos and ambition that exists in the stock market. And although there are financial markets in all major capital cities, the center of New York is the professional and financial top of all transactions worldwide. The way in which this environment is shown to us from the initial credits is insurmountable, in such a way that it is already part of the collective imagination.

Despite what some critics may say, Wall Street is a film that has aged very well, without being damaged by the technology of the time. Yes, it is possible that the first giant mobile phones, computers with monochrome green monitors or shirts with suspenders cause a certain smile in the current viewer, but the atmosphere and character description have remained unchanged since then, as well as conflicts that the film poses. For that reason, I recommend it.
