Widow's Bay' - It's Not What I Expected, But Definitely Worth the Watch

Review by @danielcarrerag 🏆#113 🔥1 🎵32 🎬99 📺98 · 6h · of Widow's Bay · 2 views

After the latest Emmy Awards, I was blown away by the massive sweep made by the series Widow's Bay. Out of 19 total nominations, it took home 14 wins—highlighted by its win for Best Comedy Series, shattering the record for the most wins in that category. Truth be told, this show wasn't even on my radar, but I'd been itching to watch something that would make me laugh out loud. Safe to say I got a major surprise: after watching the first two episodes, I realized the humor wasn't quite what I expected.

Widow's Bay falls somewhere into the supernatural horror-comedy genre, blended with dark comedy and a The Office-style workplace sitcom vibe. Honestly, this flavor of comedy usually isn't my go-to since it doesn't always hit the funny bone for me. If you aren't familiar with this style, you might end up thinking you're watching a poorly made horror flick. But that's entirely by design: if the jokes don't hook you, the horror will—or you'll just end up leaning into the cringe.

What actually pulled me in, though, was the folk horror angle—the kind that leans heavily into tropes, yet remains ridiculously fun to watch, and here it’s executed exceptionally well. The plot follows Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, in a small island town. All he wants is to boost tourism, pulling out all the stops, but his plans are constantly derailed by supernatural chaos triggered by a generational curse that releases monsters, killer clowns, and thick fog.

Each episode tackles a distinct threat stemming from the curse, heavily leaning into iconic horror movie tropes. These episodic challenges build into an overarching narrative that gradually unveils the town's lore and deep-seated secrets. The comedy is supposed to stem from how the characters react to these paranormal occurrences. The dysfunctional, eccentric town council members treat demonic outbreaks like just another mundane civic task on their daily to-do list.

To be fair, I thought the blend of classic horror and workplace comedy was really clever. Maintaining a straight face of normalcy during utterly terrifying and absurd moments works brilliantly, though to be completely frank, only two scenes genuinely made me laugh out loud. One was when the mayor gets hunted by a witch whose M.O. for killing victims is sitting on their faces. The other was when the mayor's assistant gets stalked by a supernatural serial killer; after blasting him with a shotgun, she refuses to lower her weapon until the corpse is completely cremated.

Would I recommend the show? Absolutely. Even if it didn't leave me dying of laughter, fans of cringe comedy definitely will. It's also a solid pick for anyone who enjoys soft horror. Will I watch season two? Without a doubt. There are still plenty of mysteries left unsolved, and the plot twist in the season finale was killer. Overall, it’s a great series that any film and TV fan should check out—it just made television history, and for good reason.

This is one of the best series of the year; there’s a reason it won so many Emmys. The comedy is incredible—it’s a very refined type of humor. And the horror aspect is brilliantly executed; I’d call it unsettling.
