Finally and after being a couple of weeks trying to finish it I could finish watching this series, one that as I say in the title I would classify it as a younger sister of that famous German story that hooked many of us as it was Dark. It must be said that this series is not as intricate as Dark but in essence the similarities are very evident. I sincerely believe that this production can be like one of the great surprises of Netflix this year because it is one that frankly has it all, it has like 3 or 4 genres included in its plot and that makes it of more interesting.
Science fiction, drama, crime and a psychological and police thriller may be some of the elements we see in this series, all very well developed, in my humble opinion. It is one of those series that as soon as you see the first episode you will surely begin to have doubts and questions that will increase the intrigue and the desire to continue watching episodes one after another. I think the right way to watch it is as often as possible, that is to say, in consecutive days, because if you leave it for several days you will have to watch half of the previous chapter to catch the thread again. It's not a tangled one, but it's one that has a lot of details that you have to be aware of. But well, let's talk about what this interesting story is.
It all begins with a corpse, the particularity is that this same body appears in four different times being investigated by four detectives who will be the center of the plot. 1890, 1941, 2023, 2053 are the years in which this dead man appears so the four detectives will have to start looking for clues to clarify the event. As the investigation opens they will realize that there are certain connections between them, you will say that this is impossible for the police of 1890 but it is not, the series will be responsible for joining all the threads and ends. From nowhere you will be immersed in a story where logic and reasoning will lose all sense they may have.
Edmond Hillinghead (1890), Karl Whiteman (1941), Shahara Hasan (2023) and Maplewood (2053) are the police heads of each era where Shira Haas stands out, I don't know if you remember her from that extraordinary miniseries Unorthodox. The thing is that also, in addition to the possible connections between them, you will realize that there is a conspiratorial network behind everything which has spread for over 150 years and whose head is a guy who in each era has had a very large influence which has allowed him to move and carry out his plan. The series, at least in my case never tired me, it is possible that it gets a little long at times, but as they are always discovering things this makes the time is relative.
One of the coolest things about the series I would say is its setting and staging. As you know it is one that takes place in 4 different eras and each of them is very well represented in terms of costumes and visually, you really get to teleport to each specific year, there are elements that are very well achieved and cared for and that is a plus. This also leads us to everything that has to do with certain effects framed within science fiction itself, there are no great scenes in this regard but the little we appreciate is more than enough; it is a series where what really stands out is its plot and how interesting it can be.
Talking about the plot. You have to be careful and pay attention at all times, being one where there are constant jumps in time it is possible that if you are a distracted person you will overlook certain details that later will surely be very necessary. In the four epochs always the police and detective factor will be present but there are also some sub stories that involve the protagonists that are also interesting and give more depth to the series, the human factor of each one is greatly enhanced taking them to different types of personal relationships that inevitably makes you feel empathy for the four.
The intrigue, the not knowing, that feeling of watching a thriller and always being in expectation of what might happen, of seeing something in 1941 and how that affects 2053, understanding how all the plots are intertwined and not getting lost in the attempt; all that is what makes this series very top notch and very entertaining to watch. The engine that drives everything in a way is power, that feeling of having the ability to control history, but then, at the end of the series, there is an interesting plot twist that makes the focus go towards love and regret, it's like a moral that it's never too late to change things.
The characters are good, all of them without exception. The four detectives act very well, they all have a reason to move and it shows. I liked Jacob Fortune-Lloyd who plays the 1941 detective, besides being one of the most important, I think I liked his performance the most. Even Stephen Graham, who is the "antagonist" also manages a good role. In conclusion I give it an 8/10, I think the series is pretty good, I was very surprised. It entertains, has an interesting story although not very novel, good performances and above all it does not bore. It's on Netflix, there are 8 chapters of about an hour. I leave the trailer here.
