Hace unos días me puse al día con una de las series las cuales están revolucionando todo, The White Lotus, y lo está haciendo gracias a su trama tan particular pero sobre todo por sus actrices y actores que en ella hacen vida. Esto lo digo por Aubrey Plaza es una de las protagonistas, de ahí a que me quedara maravillado con ella y que me diera cuenta que una de las películas de las que se habló este año la tenga a ella igualmente como la protagonista. Confieso que a ella puede que la haya visto por ahí muy superficialmente pero después de todo lo visto y más aún con este rol en el film que hablaremos hoy puedo decir que ha sido de mis grandes descubrimientos del año.

A few days ago I caught up with one of the series which are revolutionizing everything, The White Lotus, and it is doing so thanks to its very particular plot but especially for its actresses and actors who make life in it. I say this because Aubrey Plaza is one of the protagonists, hence I was amazed with her and I realized that one of the movies that was talked about this year also has her as the protagonist. I confess that I may have seen her only superficially, but after everything I have seen and even more with this role in the film we will talk about today, I can say that she has been one of my great discoveries of the year.

Emily the Criminal es una película de este año la cual si sabía de ella pero que por diferentes razones nunca la había visto, no me llamaba la atención. Eso cambió y ayer me dediqué a verla, el resultado? - estuvo buena, una trama super sencilla y sin muchas complicaciones pero decente. Es una historia la cual habla de lo que es la situación, intuyo yo, de muchas personas en Estados Unidos y otras partes del mundo, una vida llena de deudas hasta más no poder y que hacer en esos casos cuando toda esa situación es más grande que uno mismo. Así que bueno, hablemos un poco de lo que Emily tiene que hacer para poder seguir respirando en ese mar de deudas en la que está sumergida.

Emily the Criminal is a movie of this year which I knew about it but for different reasons I had never seen it, it didn't call my attention. That changed and yesterday I decided to watch it, the result? - It was good, a super simple plot and without many complications but decent. It's a story which talks about what is the situation, I guess, of many people in the United States and other parts of the world, a life full of debts and what to do in those cases when the whole situation is bigger than oneself. So, let's talk a little about what Emily has to do to be able to keep breathing in this sea of debt in which she is submerged.

Emily Benetto (Aubrey Plaza) es una persona a la que la vida no la ha tratado muy bien que digamos. Es una joven que lleva en sus hombros una deuda por prestamos estudiantiles muy grande, hablamos de miles y miles de dólares y para ir solventando esa responsabilidad tiene que trabajar en lugares mal pagados y con cero condiciones, básicamente siendo explotada laboralmente. El tema es que gracias a cosas que pasaron en su pasado al parecer no puede optar por mejores empleos por lo que la situación cada vez se vuelve más y más complicada hasta que un buen día recibe una información que puede que la ayude a cambiar su suerte y por que no, su vida misma. Todo dependerá de las decisiones que tome de acá en adelante.

Emily Benetto (Aubrey Plaza) is a person to whom life has not treated her very well. She is a young woman who carries on her shoulders a very large student loan debt, we are talking about thousands and thousands of dollars and in order to pay off that responsibility she has to work in places with low pay and zero conditions, basically being exploited in the workplace. The thing is that thanks to things that happened in her past, it seems that she cannot opt for better jobs, so the situation becomes more and more complicated until one day she receives information that may help her to change her luck and why not, her life itself. Everything will depend on the decisions she makes from now on.

Es justo acá en donde la película comienza a andar y se empieza a poner un poco más interesante la trama. Al ver que cada vez todo es más cuesta arriba nuestra joven decide entrar en el mundo de la ilegalidad pero una en donde la coerción no existe, todo lo que pase es únicamente por los deseos como ya dije de las decisiones de cada quien. Esto puede que suene a un cuento de hadas o muy bonito para ser verdad pero Emily pronto se dará cuenta que no es así, que una serie de eventos ocasionará que las cosas se compliquen y lo que en principio era una tarea de diez minutos se transformará en una una lucha letal cubierta de una criminalidad muy evidente y peligrosa.

It is right here where the film begins to walk and the plot starts to get a little more interesting. Seeing that everything is getting more and more uphill our young girl decides to enter the world of illegality but one where coercion does not exist, everything that happens is only by the desires as I said of the decisions of each person. This may sound like a fairy tale or too beautiful to be true but Emily will soon realize that it is not so, that a series of events will cause things to get complicated and what in principle was a ten-minute task will become a lethal struggle covered with a very obvious and dangerous criminality.

Como se dieron cuenta la trama es muy común, es una que la podemos encontrar en cientos de films que hay por allí afuera pero esto no impide que la película sea perfectamente disfrutable, nada aburrida y hasta impredecible. Dentro de la sencillez hay una tensión en cada paso que da Emily porque sabemos que está en la línea floja, sabemos que cualquier paso en falso puede ser el fin de ella y eso es algo que se percibe en las escenas en donde ella va al limite. Todo esto hace que siempre tengamos la atención al máximo, no hay momento en donde el film baje de intensidad porque incluso en los pasajes en donde ella hace su vida fuera de esta red criminal hay cierta presión de buscar encajar, de aparentar que no está pasando en paralelo a la busqueda de un trabajo decente y bien remunerado.

As you noticed the plot is very common, it is one that we can find in hundreds of films out there but this does not prevent the film from being perfectly enjoyable, not boring and even unpredictable. Within the simplicity there is a tension in every step that Emily takes because we know that she is on the loose line, we know that any false step can be the end of her and that is something that is perceived in the scenes where she goes to the limit. All this makes us always have our attention to the maximum, there is no moment where the film drops in intensity because even in the passages where she makes her life outside this criminal network there is some pressure to try to fit in, to pretend that it is not happening in parallel to the search for a decent and well paid job.

Es un film que muestra un poco como es la vida real a la hora de hacerse con un trabajo, de todas las injusticias que rodean ese mundo y de lo terrible y desprotegido que puede estar todo el sistema laboral. En la historia como que se busca justificar todo esto con el hecho de que Emily termine haciendo lo malo, de que por la falta de oportunidades ella tenga que recurrir a este lado oscuro de la vida. Evidentemente no es así porque siempre va a haber una opción y todas las consecuencias en nuestras vidas no pueden ser producto de que algo o alguien sea poco justo, todo dependerá de como seamos capaces de manejar cada situación. Esto Emily puede que lo entienda como puede que no.

It is a film that shows a bit of what real life is like when it comes to getting a job, all the injustices that surround that world and how terrible and unprotected the entire labor system can be. The story tries to justify all this with the fact that Emily ends up doing the wrong thing, that because of the lack of opportunities she has to resort to this dark side of life. Evidently this is not so because there will always be a choice and all the consequences in our lives cannot be the product of something or someone being unfair, everything will depend on how we are able to handle each situation. This Emily may or may not understand.

Aubrey acá es estupenda, toda la construcción de su personaje es muy buena porque es una mujer que por todo lo que le ha tocado vivir sabe moverse por la vida, no deja que nadie le pase por encima ni mucho menos que la pisotee, no importa quien sea. Hay una escena acá en donde está en una entrevista de trabajo que para mi es de la mejor de la película, una persona con un temple de hierro pero que por dentro está temblando de miedo. Se puede caer pero siempre se va a levantar incluso con más fuerza que antes y eso es algo que veremos mucho aquí. Plaza es muy buena actriz, en The White Lotus lo pensé y con esta película lo confirmé, cuando se le pide drama lo entrega, cuando hay que ser más dura y se le exige acción y rudeza también lo entrega, es muy completa por lo que su personaje los es todo en esta trama.

Aubrey is great here, the whole construction of her character is very good because she is a woman who for all that she has lived through knows how to move through life, she doesn't let anyone walk over her, much less trample on her, no matter who she is. There is a scene here where she is in a job interview that for me is the best in the film, a person with an iron temper but inside she is trembling with fear. She can fall but she will always get up even stronger than before and that is something we will see a lot here. Plaza is a very good actress, in The White Lotus I thought so and with this film I confirmed it, when she is asked for drama she delivers it, when she has to be tougher and action and rudeness is demanded she also delivers it, she is very complete so her character is everything in this plot.

7.5/10. Es una película que a mi me gustó bastante, es entretenida, no perdemos el tiempo, nos engancha desde un principio porque al final lo ilegal siempre va a generar curiosidad y porque todo va en ascenso, es decir, un problema cada vez se va haciendo un poco más grande y ver como Emily busca resolverlos es el atractivo de este film. Hay drama, acción y un poco de suspenso del no saber que va a pasar por la volatilidad de las cosas y de los demás personajes. Tiene una duración de una hora y media y la pueden encontrar en Netflix. It is a film that I liked a lot, it is entertaining, we do not waste time, we are hooked from the beginning because in the end the illegal will always generate curiosity and because everything is on the rise, that is, a problem is becoming a little bigger and see how Emily seeks to solve them is the attraction of this film. There is drama, action and a bit of suspense of not knowing what is going to happen because of the volatility of things and the other characters.
