What would happen if we put Simon Leviev, the Tinder swindler, together with Anna Delvey or Sorokin? - I think the whole world would run out of money, the banks would go bankrupt and stop counting. Following a little on the wave of what was the documentary of the Tinder thief, because yes, in the end that's what it is, I decided to see this new story that is not much different from the first only that here Anna's ambitions were gigantic and even unimaginable.
Managing to swindle the most important banks in a country, hotels and even the biggest name businessmen and that ALL of this has been through expectations alone is something that I do not know if admire is the word but it is certainly a feat that very few people in the world can do. The ability or delirium of inventing a life that was a mirage to achieve a goal is what this story is about and today we are going to talk a little about it.
Briefly, what is this plot that is catching everyone? - Well, it is the story of Anna Delvey, played by Julia Garner, an influencer who managed to take over Instagram with a life full of luxury, travel and brands that unfortunately for some was nothing more than a deception as if it were the act of the best illusionist in the world. The thing is that she managed by any means to maintain that false life until the time came, by the same weight of lies, in which that story could not continue to stay afloat and little by little was being exposed.
It must be said that this story is based on an article written by a journalist, Jessica Pressler, who was in charge of unmasking Anna. In this miniseries Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky) would be that reporter and who in my opinion is the true protagonist of this plot, I think that without the tenacity of that woman would not be talking about the subject today. In a story that when you start to see it you wonder if Anna is really so persuasive or is it that people are becoming more and more naive? - because it is even surreal the things that happen.
Entering fully into what is the series is told from the perspective of people who at different times were "victims" or part of Anna's life in New York. This happens because Vivian is the one who interviews them, so the story goes in parallel, that is to say in two timelines, which makes the attention never gets lost because every detail helps to understand the web of lies and the way Anna acted.
Each chapter seems to have the name of each person but in reality the series, unlike that of the Tinder scammer, is not about those people, it is about Anna and how Vivian, despite the thousand obstacles she got in the way, managed to put together an article that was one of the most read in the newspaper where she worked. It is a series that is very well done because it mixes the real with the fictional but it does it in such a subtle way that it seems that everything is a copy of what really happened in real life.
But, why my title? - Because ALL but absolutely ALL the characters that appear in this miniseries were moved by mere personal interest. It is a story that shows us that true friendships are very few, that at the end of the day even the journalist herself did what she did to the point of obsessing only for wanting to have the exclusive; or Anna's defender in the trial wanted her name to be more important, etc.
And that's how it is, the world moves in that way where the first thing is one and then the others and that is something that you will see here in industrial quantities. Anna's supposed friends were with her for the money, the luxuries and not for true affection, some realized it early others later but the end was always the same. And that's what I like about this kind of stories based on true events, that somehow shows us the true nature of the human being, even if it sounds a bit dramatic.
Julia Garner I think she is one of the best actresses there is today, her role in Ozark was incredible and in this series came to corroborate how good she is. It is impressive how easy it is to hate Anna, a materialistic, selfish and dissociated from reality person who only thinks about her benefit, but that hatred that generates is thanks to Julia and her level of interpretation. When a character generates those feelings is because the actor or actress in this case is certainly doing his job as it should.
Anna Chlumsky, I don't know if you remember her but she is the girl from the movie "my first kiss" that she did with Macaulay Culkin, she also deserves a few lines. I think that the series or the temporal part of the interviews goes at her pace which is frenetic and without pauses, she is the one who sets the course of the series and it is that attitude what gets people not to get bored and always want to be one step ahead.
I don't know if you know but there is a conspiracy theory that tells us that these documentaries are actually financed by American Express and if you notice the cards used are theirs, besides the INCREDIBLE ease with which they give you the loans and release the money. But as I told you, mere speculation, or not?
In the end we have a product based on reality that seeks to exploit this type of content that seems to always do very well. Personally I quite liked this miniseries, it is a very attractive story where they used good actors, good editing of the plot, they made it enjoyable in the sense that you never get tired of it because there is always a detail that changes everything radically.
I give it a solid 8.5/10 because it never bored me and because of Julia Garner's extraordinary performance; it's really something worth watching, it's a very crazy story and in these times it's hard to believe that these things happen but we saw that they do happen.
