Hello, anime fans. Today we’re back with another anime that I watched earlier this year and that I absolutely loved seeing again after waiting almost three years. That’s right—it’s one of the most anticipated comebacks, and one I was most eager to see again after its masterful first season. A story packed with action, drama, suspense, and powers that go beyond our imagination. Based on the web manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Yuji Kaku, Hell’s Paradise (Season 2) was produced by Twin Engine and the renowned studio MAPPA. It’s one of the best action anime I recommend watching right now.

Plot
This second season begins shortly after the events at the end of the first season, with our protagonist Gabimaru on the island along with the other survivors and ex-convicts. But before that, we see Yamada Asaemon Jikka return alive from the island and be interrogated by the shogunate about the mission. Due to a lack of information and evidence showing just how dangerous the island is, Jikka is sent back along with a team of swordsmen and another group of shinobi, as well as members of the same clan to which Gabimaru belongs.

For those of you reading this who didn’t know, two years ago I wrote a review of the first season of Hell’s Paradise, and at the time I considered it one of the best action and fantasy series I’ve seen in recent years. Now, after watching its long-awaited second season earlier this year, I can confirm once again just how much it continues to fascinate me. This new season picks up where the epic story we know from the beginning left off and shows how everything evolves into something much bigger.
But despite how fascinating and entertaining it is, Hell’s Paradise hasn’t received the attention and popularity it deserves right now because this second season aired simultaneously with the final season of Jujutsu Kaisen, the favorite anime from the same studio, MAPPA. Even so, in terms of production and animation quality, this had no negative effect—quite the opposite, in fact. Still, the fact that these two action and dark fantasy series aired at the same time led to comparisons between them, and most viewers ended up choosing a favorite.
Para los que me leen y no lo sabían, hace dos años he hecho una reseña de la primera temporada de Hell’s Paradise y en su momento la consideré una de las mejores obras de acción y fantasía que he visto en estos últimos años. Actualmente y luego de haber visto su tan esperada segunda temporada a principios de este año puedo confirmar de nuevo lo mucho que me sigue fascinando. Esta nueva temporada da continuación a la grandiosa historia que conocemos al principio y cómo todo va evolucionando a algo mucho más grande.
Pero a pesar de lo fascinante y entretenida que es, Hell's Paradise no consiguió la atención y popularidad que se merece actualmente debido a que esta segunda temporada fue emitida en simultáneo con la última temporada de Jujutsu Kaisen, el anime favorito del mismo estudio MAPPA. Aún así, en lo que respecta a producción y calidad de animación no tuvo ningún efecto negativo, sino más bien todo lo contrario. I think everyone here already knows just how popular Jujutsu Kaisen is these days, so there’s really no need to even introduce or describe it. But anyway, if I had to choose between this famous anime and Hell’s Paradise, I think we should give this magnificent work by Yuji Kaku a chance. I’m not just saying this to go against all those Jujutsu Kaisen fans who surely won’t like what I’m saying, but because I believe that Hell’s Paradise has much more interesting character development and a story that deserve consideration.
While both works blend the same genres, there are many things that set them apart. For starters, Hell’s Paradise is set in ancient Japan, during the Edo period, when samurai and ninjas were becoming legends following an era of endless wars. This was a time when those in power sought only more power—and with it, the quest for the “fountain of youth” or “eternal life,” which was rumored to be on an island from which no one who went there ever returned alive. That place takes center stage throughout almost the entire story.
Creo que ya todos aquí sabemos lo popular que es Jujutsu Kaisen en la actualidad como para hacerle siquiera una presentación o descripción de la misma. Pero bueno, si me ponen a escoger entre este famoso anime y Hell's Paradise, considero que hay que darle una oportunidad a esta grandiosa obra de Yuji Kaku. Esto no lo digo solamente para llevarle la contraria a todo esos fans de Jujutsu Kaisen que de seguro no les gustará esto que estoy diciendo, sino porque considero que Hell's Paradise tiene un desarrollo de personajes y una historia mucho más interesantes y que se deben de tomar en cuenta.
Si bien ambas obras poseen una mezcla de los mismos géneros, tienen muchas cosas que los diferencia en demasía. Para empezar, Hell's Paradise está ambientada en la época de la antigua Japón, en el período Edo donde los samuráis y los ninjas estaban volviéndose leyendas luego de una época de guerras sin fin. Esta era una época donde la gente con poder solo buscaban más poder y con eso la búsqueda de la “fuente de la juventud” o la “vida eterna” que se rumoreaba estaba en una isla que nadie que iba regresaba con vida. Dicho lugar es el que tiene el protagonismo en casi toda la historia.

We then see how a group of ex-convicts, criminals, murderers, and other rather dangerous individuals are taken against their will to this island to be sacrificed in order to find the fruit of eternal life. Upon arriving and facing the enormous and terrifying monsters that inhabit this place, they realize that the reality is much worse than the rumors suggested. It is here that only the strong, the skilled, and those capable of anything survive—but not for long, since this time they’ll have to face beings who call themselves “gods,” immortal and extremely powerful beings.
The nature of the power used on this island can be explained and traced back to research conducted many centuries ago by a scholar who sought knowledge and power. However, this power—derived from nature itself, from life itself—would transform him into the creator of beings that mimic humanity, yet are far more extraordinary than anyone else. This anime features a vast array of philosophical, natural, and even religious elements. We also see how nature itself is defied by creating beings capable of living forever, who are then used as weapons.

Al llegar y enfrentarse a los enormes y aterradores monstruos que habitan en este lugar se dan cuenta de que la realidad es mucho peor de lo que se rumoreaba. Es aquí donde solo los fuertes, hábiles y capaces de lo que sea sobreviven, pero no por mucho tiempo ya que tendrán que enfrentarse ésta vez con seres que se hacen llamar “dioses”, seres inmortales y bastante poderosos.
La naturaleza del poder que se utiliza en esta isla tiene su explicación y su origen de una investigación de hace muchos siglos atrás de un erudito que buscaba conocimiento y poder. No obstante, dicho poder, originario de la naturaleza, de la propia vida, lo convertiría en el creador de seres que simulan a la humanidad, pero que son mucho más especiales que cualquiera. Este anime posee una enorme variedad de elementos filosóficos, naturales y hasta religiosos. También vemos cómo se desafía a la misma naturaleza creando seres capaces de vivir para siempre y que son utilizados como armas.

This is what makes Hell's Paradise special and unique—it isn't just about powerful people fighting to be the best of their generation and things like that. Instead, it tells us about a place where all your dreams can come true, as long as you're willing to pay the price: your own humanity. Many of the characters we meet in this anime—and whom we may come to know well—are people seeking power who, for that reason, decide to become inhuman beings: creatures brimming with energy that defy the laws of nature.
However, there are others who simply seek to survive and return home at any cost, as is the case with Gabimaru, who stands out the most in this series—obviously, since he’s the protagonist. But to achieve this, he’ll also have to sacrifice his humanity. It’s interesting how the themes of morality, nature, and how those who defy it suffer the cruelest consequences are portrayed so well here. We also see the result of the relentless pursuit of power: a long and overwhelming life filled with things that never satisfy you and turn you into something less than human.

Sino que nos habla de un lugar donde todos tus sueños se pueden hacer realidad, siempre y cuando decidas pagar el precio por ello: tu propia humanidad. Muchos de los personajes que conocemos en este anime y que puede que nos lleguemos a familiarizar son personas que buscan poder y que por eso deciden convertirse en seres inhumanos, criaturas repletas de energía que desafían las leyes de la naturaleza.
Sin embargo, hay otros que solo buscan sobrevivir y regresar a casa a como dé lugar, como lo es el caso de Gabimaru, quien es el que más se destaca de esta serie por ser el protagonista, obviamente. Pero para lograr esto también tendrá que sacrificar su humanidad. Es interesante cómo el tema de la moralidad, la naturaleza y cómo quienes la desafían sufren las más crueles de las consecuencias es representado tan bien aquí. También vemos el resultado de la búsqueda incansable del poder: una larga y abrumadora vida repleta de cosas que no te sacian y te vuelven algo que no es humano.

As you may have noticed, another strength of Hell's Paradise is the way its plot tackles complex and profound themes such as the purpose of life, love and sacrifice, the desire to achieve your goals, and the obligation to set an example for those who follow you. The anime revisits the theme of immortality quite often, but the way this meaning is reflected in the various characters who stand out throughout these two seasons is fascinating, as we get to see different perspectives on that concept of immortality.
Another thing I really like about this anime—aside from its massive amount of action and displays of power—is the way the creator gives center stage and full attention to each of the supporting characters we meet here. This is especially true in this second season, where things get even trickier for everyone. The way we come to know each character’s story—their dreams, aspirations, and feelings—is fascinating. We even get to learn a thing or two about some of the enemies we encounter this season as well.
Como pudieron notar, otro de los puntos positivos de Hell's Paradise es la forma en la que su trama trata temas complejos y profundos como lo es el propósito de la vida, el amor y el sacrificio, el deseo de lograr tus objetivos y la obligación de convertirse en un ejemplo para los que te siguen. El anime repite mucho el tema de la inmortalidad y todo eso, pero la forma en la que vemos reflejado este significado en los distintos personajes que logran destacarse a lo largo de estas dos temporadas es fascinante ya que logramos divisar diferentes visiones de dicha inmortalidad.
Otra cosa que me gusta mucho de este anime, aparte de su enorme cantidad de acción y demostración de poder, es la forma en la que el creador le da el protagonismo y la total atención a cada uno de los personajes secundarios que conocemos aquí. Sobre todo en esta segunda temporada donde las cosas se ponen más peliagudas para todo el mundo. La forma en la que llegamos a conocer las historias de cada uno, sus sueños, sus aspiraciones y sentimientos es fascinante. Incluso llegamos a conocer una que otra historia de algunos de los enemigos que vemos en esta temporada también.

Regarding the latter, it’s interesting to see how the creator doesn’t seek to replicate the same old clichés found in every typical shōnen action anime, but rather aims to infuse his work and characters with emotion, feeling, and originality. Hell’s Paradise isn’t just another battle anime where we see good guys fighting bad guys to save the world—no. This anime is about a group of outcasts—the absolute worst of humanity—who are taken to a place where they’ll be put to the test to see what they’re made of and what sacrifices they’ll make to survive.
Survival, existence, life, fulfillment—all of this and more is what this series is about. Its characters, including the antagonists, each have their own stories, personalities, and ways of seeing the world. What’s interesting about all this is seeing how, once again, the creator of this series seeks to imbue beings who are supposed to NOT be human with feelings and humanity. Another aspect that really stands out in this anime is the bonds—the relationships that form between the characters we meet: siblings, friends, enemies, teachers, and students, etc.
Con respecto a esto último, es interesante ver cómo el creador no busca replicar los mismos clichés de todo anime shōnen de acción de siempre, sino que busca más bien darle emoción, sentimiento y originalidad a su obra y sus personajes. Hell's Paradise no es un simple anime de batallas donde vemos a gente buena peleando con gente mala y así salvar el mundo, no. Este anime trata de un grupo de marginados, de lo peor de lo peor que puede existir en la humanidad que es llevada a un lugar donde serán puestos a prueba para ver de qué están hechos y qué sacrificios harán para lograr sobrevivir.
Supervivencia, existencia, vida, realización, todo esto y más es de lo que trata esta obra. Sus personajes, incluyendo los antagonistas, tienen cada uno sus historias, sus personalidades y sus formas de ver el mundo. Lo interesante de todo esto es ver cómo, una vez más, el creador de esta obra busca darle sentimientos y humanidad a seres que se supone que NO son humanos. Otra cosa que se destaca bastante en este anime son los vínculos, las relaciones que se forman entre los personajes que conocemos. Hermanos, amigos, enemigos, maestros y estudiantes, etc.

I also really like that there’s no filler, that every single episode is incredibly entertaining, and that the plot itself manages to maintain a certain level of logic and coherence—without too many plot jumps, shifts in pace, or absurd moments of humor where they don’t belong. The anime also plays a bit with the viewer’s psyche, making us see or think things that turn out not to be true in the end—or that even leave us with a lot to think about. Another great thing about this anime is that it doesn’t have Fanservice—or rather, they don’t overdo it, using it only when necessary for the plot.
Last but not least, let’s finally talk about the audiovisual aspects of Hell’s Paradise. As expected from one of today’s largest studios, MAPPA did a spectacular job with this entire second season. Even though they were busy with the latest season of Jujutsu Kaisen—which was an absolute audiovisual marvel from start to finish—they didn’t slow down or let that work affect their efforts on this other great action and dark fantasy anime. In fact, you can even see an improvement in the quality of the animation, visual effects, shots, and spectacular views.
También me gusta mucho que no tenga nada de relleno, que cada uno de sus episodios sean de lo más entretenidos y que la misma trama logre tener cierto nivel de lógica y sentido, sin tantos saltos, cambios en el ritmo ni momentos absurdos de humor en momentos donde no deberían de tenerlo. El anime también juega un poco con la psique del espectador, haciéndonos ver o pensar cosas que al final no son así o que incluso al final nos ponen a pensar bastante. Otra cosa buena que tiene este anime es que no tiene Fanservice, o bueno, no abusan mucho de esto sino solo cuando es necesario para la trama.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora sí del apartado audiovisual que tiene Hell's Paradise. Como era de esperarse de uno de los estudios más grandes de la actualidad, MAPPA hizo un trabajo espectacular con esta segunda temporada en su totalidad. A pesar de incluso estar ocupados con la última temporada de Jujutsu Kaisen que fue una completa maravilla audiovisual de principio a fin, no bajaron el ritmo ni les afectó el trabajo con este otro gran anime de acción y fantasía oscura. Es más, se puede incluso apreciar una mejora en la calidad de animación, efectos visuales, planos y vistas espectaculares.

From the character designs to the detailed art style, the excellent use of light and shadow, and the effects and transitions—it’s all top-notch. The overall fluidity is quite captivating, especially during moments of action and tension, where it really shines. All of this, combined with the excellent sound effects and a soundtrack that also sounds pretty great. But what I liked most is that they used almost no CGI or 3D to animate the monsters and the various transformations we see in this second season. I 100% recommend this anime.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the action, dark fantasy, and psychological suspense genres.
