Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches, damas y caballeros.

Good morning, good afternoon or good evening, ladies and gentlemen. How are you? How are you today? I hope very well. Earlier, in one of my recent posts, I had technically already talked about this work, but in this case I am going to focus on the anime in question; I want to analyse how well it manages to maintain the essence of the original material in the anime adaptation, whether it achieves the goal of telling the story in its entirety or whether it is a product that complements the video game. I was also genuinely curious to see how they adapted the matter of the endings that the visual novel has, since to unlock the true ending the fourth wall is technically broken; I simply found it impossible to pull off given how they had developed everything. There is also the fact that all the events in the video game are purely random; putting everything in order so that it makes sense and can tell a story more naturally must have been a titanic task. Despite all that work, there were points that “bothered” me a little because of how they were done; other episodes leaned more towards the philosophical and I loved them. I suppose it is impossible to make a perfect adaptation that satisfies everyone who consumes it. For those who don’t know what it’s about, Gnosia is a video game that has an anime adaptation (an adaptation we will analyse here), which is a certain reinterpretation of the classic Mafia/Werewolf, with very colourful characters.

The anime puts us in the shoes of Yuri, a boy who will be woken up on a spaceship by Setsu, who seems to be the one in charge of the ship. Yuri suffers from amnesia, so they will have to fill him in on the situation, since the ship seems to be suffering from an infection by beings called “Gnosia”. If they infect an individual, they will be able to “erase other humans from existence”. The only way to deal with all this is to expel the “Gnosia” from the ship; for this they have to try to discover who it is by means of an assembly, where each one will set out their points about who seems suspicious and then proceed with the vote. If they expel the Gnosia, it can be said that the “humans” win; if the Gnosia survives, the assemblies continue until the Gnosia erases everyone or until the “humans” find the infected person. The anime deals with many themes that give food for thought, such as whether a clone can be considered an independent entity, someone who has the same value as an original, or for example whether an artificial intelligence, if it were to feel emotions and behave like a human, could be considered a living being; Gnosia really makes you think with these, we could say, modern philosophical questions. All of this will technically be unlocked as we get to know more of the characters who are introduced to us, each with their own quite unique way of being and their striking backstory.

Now, the big problem is that I think great moments were lost that are better implemented in the video game; other moments were not even included, or were not given enough relevance. There is the character of Yuriko, where, to get some information from her, she challenges us: you have to be able to expel her so that she tells you part of the truth, since she is a Gnosia. This confrontation feels like fighting a boss, and you are likely to lose several times, since in the game she has one of the highest stats. All this part, which is challenging and one of the best parts of the adventure, feels super rushed in the anime. There is a super-fast pace throughout the anime; technically it feels as if the protagonist obtains information from his companions instantly, as if it cost him nothing; just one event is enough, making some of the characters perhaps feel flat. I focus more on Yuriko because it feels as if her character was wasted, even though she is one of the most difficult characters to get information out of. Despite all these details, it feels like a product faithful to its original material that tries to bring order to a set of random events that take place in a video game; the only thing they invented is how Yuri has to save Setsu, there was no breaking of the fourth wall, and the solution feels like something done in a hurry. I suppose 24 episodes were not enough to condense everything.

In terms of animation, I genuinely did not know the studio in charge of this, but after looking a bit I see it is called Domerica. They have made few anime, but with Gnosia they did a spectacular job; the animation is a luxury, the quality is immense, you can tell they put in a huge amount of budget. And despite all this, I feel that this anime went unnoticed; I have not seen many people talking about it anywhere, and I only found it because of the game, searching for titles about time loops. I also want to highlight that they excelled with the opening; it is far too good, but what they did with the ending is even better: depending on certain parts of the story, the visuals and even the song itself change. I suppose the production of this anime had a lot of love behind it; I just hope they made enough profit to justify the budget that was used. Anyway, Gnosia is a great work that everyone should experience, first by playing the video game and then complementing everything through the anime. So, without anything more to say, I say goodbye for today.
