After Jonathan Joestar's death and Dio's disappearance, Jojo's story takes a 50-year leap forward and transports us to the time of Joseph Joestar, Jonathan's grandson and the next protagonist of the plot. He is a very unique character and one of the most beloved by fans of this spectacular series.
In this part of the story, the fight against the stone mask continues, where the only goal is to destroy it since it gives evil powers to whoever wears it, turning them into vampires, so to speak, although they are not the typical vampires we usually see in other series, but they are creatures of the night, with the notable difference that they retain their consciousness.
The detail in this part of the story is that Joseph, Speedwagon, and the German army realize that there is not just one stone mask but many of them, and following their origin, they find three men belonging to an ancient race, one that cannot be considered human because it goes beyond humanity, although it has very similar desires.

This is the main context in this part of the story, and I must say that it is quite good, as we can explore more of the conflict that began in the days of Dio Brando, and how this continues to affect the Joestar lineage.
Jojo's personality really appeals to me; in fact, he makes me laugh a lot, and in that sense I can say that the mangaka did an excellent job, because he takes a leap that contrasts with what we had previously seen in Jonathan's personality. In fact, this is true of all the Joestar characters. Later, in other reviews, I will talk about the following protagonists and their importance in this fantastic story.
In the fight against the Pillar Men, there are some truly shocking moments, such as the death of Joseph's friend Caesar Cepelli. His battle against Wammu was very exciting, and if it hadn't been for his own mistake, he would have won the fight. However, that was not the case, and he was caught in his rival's powerful sandstorm, dying almost instantly.

The scene is moving, and that's something I applaud, as it's not easy to touch the emotions of viewers in “simple” battles. I can honestly say that the Jojo universe is unique, with a story that alludes to its name, because it's actually very bizarre (unusual), and perhaps that's why it's so popular.
Another element I want to highlight is the battles, which are very elaborate and reveal human fragility. Here, there are no supermen who destroy them and carry on as if nothing happened. Here, a man receives a powerful attack and is left half dead, for example. I like that because it adds a touch of realism and keeps the viewer's attention intact. At least in my case, these small details elevate a work above many others where there is too much fantasy, more than I can tolerate.
Finally, I'll talk a little about the coherence within the story. There is a lot of harmony in every detail and in the characters. It's one of the most carefully crafted aspects, and it has to be that way, otherwise it's very difficult to read the entire manga or watch the five animated seasons, which are full of different characters but only prolong and culminate a conflict that has lasted for many centuries. It is undoubtedly an impressive work.

Thank you for reading

There is no doubt that stories based on the criminal world, where the demonstration of loyalty or lack thereof has always fascinated me because ambition is a factor that always influences such acts, and I believe that those who are part of that world, when they taste a certain degree of power, can be pushed to make decisions that generate fantastic stories. The South Korean production, originally from Netflix, takes this as its basis to delve into a story of revenge while a war between gangs is raging.

Mercy for None is a miniseries consisting of only seven episodes, based on a webtoon called Plaza Wars: Mercy for None. It tells the story of a man's quest for revenge against the person who took his younger brother's life, regardless of that person's position of power within the two most important criminal organizations in Seoul. This production was written by Yoo Ki-seong and directed by Choi Sung-eun. It shows us an extremely violent world with a system of honor that appears strong at first glance but has very weak foundations. It is precisely this system of honor that seems to be a major factor in confrontations where the only validation is the use of fists, kicks, bats, pipes, and any kind of knife. It also made me think that those who use firearms are cowards who fear hand-to-hand combat. These characteristics were fundamental in considering this production to be of high quality because it offers the viewer high-caliber combat scenes that are realistic, practical, and violent.
This production is not only based on showing the violence that occurs in that criminal world, as has happened and will happen in this type of story; the basis of the story is the perfect cliché of the struggle to obtain maximum power, which has always fascinated me because it is gratifying to see the use of intelligence and ambition of those who want much more; that desire is hidden between the honor and fear of the subjects towards their bosses, and you never know who will stab you in the back. As I said before, this theme within the crime genre has always existed and will continue to exist, and the relevance of the story will depend on what other factor is used to give it more relevance. Yes, the fight scenes are that factor, but the story of its protagonist, the respect, fear, and difference he conveys through his personal motives, is what undoubtedly offers something fresh to the crime genre and, in turn, makes it a good story about revenge.

Mercy for None does not seek to delve deeply into an extensive criminal system in its narrative, but it does reveal enough to understand its rules, something that is very necessary and logical in order to enjoy the story even more. To this end, it features a group of characters who will be victims of one man's reaction to a serious act against him and the sacrifice he made some time ago. In this and other aspects of this production mentioned above, it is fair to point out the lack of originality, but I repeat, it is the way this story is told that I liked because it offers many points of view from certain protagonists. So Ji-sub's performance as Nam Gi-jun is excellent. His character exudes seriousness, sadness, and conviction to do whatever it takes to fulfill his revenge. It is a potentially suicidal action because of who he must face, but being someone who fears nothing, this seems to generate fear in those who must become his opponents, which gives him a great advantage. The coldness with which "Gi-Jun" tries to make those who hurt his brother pay makes him a great character who may seem to have no development, but it only takes a few scenes to show what a good protagonist he is.

I have always appreciated stories where there is no character who is completely good, righteous, and always does the right thing. In stories where none of these characteristics exist, it is better not to force them and instead give way to yet another episode of violence and betrayal in the criminal world. but it also gives way to false respect, which is actually disguised as fear, enabling revenge to be carried out. These factors have been seen in many films, such as "The Godfather," "The Raid 2," and even "John Wick," and in my opinion, it is okay to compare it in part to those productions because nothing is done lightly in this one, and it is a high-quality production.

It's been a long time since we last saw a Superman movie. Now, James Gunn with his guidance has made Superman (2025), it is made to launch the entire new DC and reboot the character of superman. The question arises did it succeed?
In shortly I can say yes. Well, Gunn has successfully delivered a new, vibrant, and deeply heartfelt take on one of the most iconic superheroes which is ever created. I must agree on the fact that it's not perfect, but still this new Superman brings back the hope and warmth, something that recent darker versions often missed.

![]() |
The movies does not begin from Superman’s origin. The audience already know the story about how baby Kal-El lands on earth, and he grew up to be a journalist as Clark Kent. We directly got into the story at Metropolis, there Superman works at the Daily Planet as Clark alongside his girlfriend Lois Lane. He is already a public figure as superman.
From the beginning of the movie it was clear that this movie is trying to be the same as the comic book. The colorings are just amazing and the action scenes were exploding with lots of energy. The story ignites when Superman tries to stop the conflicts between two fictional nations. His attempt to stop the war was to help out the people who are suffering but he attracted international scrutiny and criticism.

On the other hand there's Lex Luthor, a tech billionaire who has a secret agenda. Luthor tries his best to manipulate the public opinions and used his resources to frame Superman as a dangerous alien who came to earth to destroy the human being and claimed that he is not a hero. In this kind of situations Clark has to save people from life threats and also win back their trust.

David Corenswet is incredibly handsome, he has totally nailed the character as both Clark and Superman. His performance has a warmth which is truly impressive. Unlike past versions which leaned into gloomy character, the new Superman knows how to smile and crack jokes. He knows how to show kindness and real emotional depth.

Rachel Brosnahan is a beautiful lady, she's a beauty with brain as Lois Lane, strong, and fearless. Her chemistry with Superman felt very authentic and natural, and their playful exchanges makes the most charming moments in the movie. I have personally enjoyed seeing them together.

Nicholas Hoult brings out the evil side of Lex Luthor very well. A perfect antagonist! he is over-the-top mad scientist we have seen before, he is calm, very calculative about his actions, and believable character who is genius and sees himself as a savior of the humanity.

The supporting characters such as Mister Terrific, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen and Hawkgirl all of them are talented and played their role very well. Alas! Not all of them got much screen time, but still their presence makes the story feel alive. And then there’s Krypto, a super-dog who plays the craziest part in the movie like he is so cute and makes every tough situation look funnier. Krypton's playful sight made the dog lovers go crazy.

One of the greatest part in this movie is that everything is in balance, the humor and serious it feels effortless. There are some moments when things got intense and the emotion flows naturally.
The visuals are the highlights of the movie. There's no muted colors, Superman’s suit pops on screen it looks bright and hopeful, and the sequences of actions are dynamic. But I felt that superman is a bit weak in this movie, I was not expecting any punch to land on his face because he is very strong and powerful despite that unexpected things happened. Anyway, the fighting scenes were very exciting.

The heart of audiences were stolen by the scenes between Clark and his adoptive parents. It felt truly grounding. This scene game us a reminder that he is the most powerful, but still Clark’s values are deeply human. This emotional core makes the movie feel meaningful and not just flashy.
As far now I have praised it but, the movie does have flaws. If I don't point it out then I would be lying. I just want to give review with full honesty. In particular places it felt overstuffed. Because of too many characters, and plot threads, it really made the climax look a bit messy and tougher to follow.

The supporting characters some of them also felt underdeveloped. They are surely given to us for exciting cameos but they also didn't make us care about them. Whatever the reason is for this but it was way too distracting.
Lastly, the movie actually has shown how the world might react towards a powerful alien but the story does not deeply drive into them.

Superman (2025) is the new beginning to the new DC Universe. It reminds us why Superman matters. This movie dares to be straightforward and sincere. I genuinely feel they have done a great cast and everyone truly deserves a praise. I would reccomend all of you to try this new movie, I know that it's not the same cast of previous Superman but still we should give them a chance to prove themselves.

Hello everyone, and member of the anime realm community. I'd be writing a review on an anime title "Fragrant Flower

I saw a short video on the internet about this anime, and I decided to download it to watch. The story is about Kaoruko Waguri and Rintaro Tsumugi. You see, let's start with Rintaro-kun. You see, Rintaro has been a child with low self-esteem due to his appearance. In the anime, Rintaro has a face that scares people, which is why many have been avoiding him. Even when he wants to help or do good, they assume he has bad intentions because of his appearance. This has made him avoid people and making friends. His life has been like that until he entered Chidori High School, where he made three friends who love him for who he is.

Everything was going well until one day, when he got back from school to help his mother in her cake shop, he met Waguri, who was shocked at seeing him watching her eat. She became flustered and ran out of the shop. Rintaro was sad because he felt he drove his mom's customer away.

The following day, as he was feeling sad, his mom came to tell him the lady that run away yesterday was back to see him, and he was surprised, so he went to meet her, and she apologized for the previous day, she treated him to a cake, and that was the beginning of a friendship that would change his life forever.
The anime is a very nice one because it tells the story of a teenager who was going through a tough time in life and how a single event can change the entire narrative of a person's life. I love that the anime is a romantic anime, with a slice of life and comedy in it. The animation was good, and the voice actor did a very good job in making sure the character sounded like what they wanted to be.
One of the biggest plot twists of this anime is that Waguri and Rintaro became close over time, but they attend different schools. Now, Rintaro High School and Waguri School hate each other, and they don't want to have anything to do with each other. Chidori High School is believed to be for losers and boys who are very dumb; basically, every bad thing about a boy comes from that school.

Just one morning, they found out that the school they attend because both of the school is just a few meters away from the other school.
The fact that Rintaro and Waguri had to put their friendship for a while was something funny, but the anime is a very good watch. It's something you would enjoy when you try it. The anime is not complete, but it has 9 episodes out already. If you are looking for an anime you can watch that doesn't have too much action but you will enjoy, then I will recommend this anime to you.
Thanks for reading. My name is Fashtioluwa.

I know that so many writers and directors want to be creative with the movie they are working in but omg, this movie was difficult for me to ended because the idea seems original but the execution wasn´t the best. See the story is about a curse but is not the typical one you received if you steal something from a sanctuary or a curse place no, the premise here is that the curse is pass from one person to another by having sex, is like some nasty supernatural STD, for real, TF!!!. I accept that is something different, unique, maybe creative but if you are going to give me that also give me a really fuck up curse and I say that because it is presented as a creature that can take the form of any person, the cursed person can´t trust no one because will never know if it is a real person or the creature. Something that caught my attention is the way the thing hunt is weird, just walk, literately only can reach you walking, don't matter if it take 5 days to finally get where you are, at the end arrived where the person is, and the only thing you have to do is keep moving, run far, far, far away or find someone to have sex with and bye curse and this part is the only thing that I think is the real curse, you basically have to sacrifice someone in order to survive, kinda very dark look.

I think that every director show the start of their movie as they want, but sometimes give all the information at the first half of the movie is like boring because don´t make think in the problem neither a solution because give everything at the beginning and is an idea that I respect but don´t support and let me tell you why I said this, at first the present the protagonist of this story Jay in a date with Hugh, they are in a movie theater but Hugh decided to leave the place, took Jay to a beach or something like and they end having sex in his car but suddenly he used chloroform to make her sleep and tie her to a chair and when she woke up, she find out that she is in underwear, tied in a chair inside of an creepy old building and he proceed to explain to her that he only accept to have a date with to passed her the cursed know she is the one that has to live with the creature following her and can´t die because if she does they will return to him, since that moment she observes that someone is following, at least he left her in her house but cursed. That´s what i mean the movie since the beginning give you everything you couldn´t make any investigation just accept what is happening and now watch how she save herself. Sometimes I do believe that the directors can´t trust their audience is so dumb that they believe giving all the information is better for us but in my case I like to think, scarves, search and work to know what is happening and find a solution.

Something that I do notice is the movie focus obviously in Jay and her curse but also in the people that is around that is only her sister and her friends, you never saw her parents or any parent in this movie, is like they all are orphans, you see that they live in a typical american house but never even feel a parental presence is only them, is confusing as many other things that happens in this movie and I am going to give you examples, it seems that the movie never confirm the period when this is supposed to take place and why? because certain things get mixed like in one minute you see kids with modern stuff and the next they're watching old movies on vintage TV's also they look like they stepped out of different decades too, some dressed like they're from the 50s while others wear modern clothes and you can see suburban Detroit vibes with old cars mixed with futuristic gadgets that dont even exist which makes you wonder if this is some alternate reality or just messy filmmaking, well I though maybe the director do it intentionally to create a confusing environment so you can feel everything more dreamlike and unreal, I'm not mad for this ideas only think that the movie never grounded about those aspects.

I really don´t understand the way the director want to present a horror movie but with a slow creature, hahaha and I mention this because the director David Mitchell wanted to keeps things tense but in a strange way with slow pacing that kinda kills the energy instead of building it up, is obvious that he was more interesting in create an atmosphere than actually scare people with traditional horror tricks, for him that was not the point of this movie, the idea is to create that psychological horror making the protagonist live with anxiety thinking when the creature will finally get her and who would look like in that moment because remember that it can take the appearance of your loved ones. In some way the whole look tries hard to be artistic with wide shots and careful framing but sometimes feels pretentious other than scary, like the director is showing off film school skills instead of focusing on making audiences jump. I respect every people works, but I don't know this movie is just weird, is like a puzzle that leaves mores questions that answers.
Well the end of this story as many others is uncertain without knowing if Jay get rid of the curse, theres also different theories about this movie, the entity its about sexual abuse trauma with the creeping thing representing psychological scars following victims, another theory is about STDs which sounds dumb since nobody can avoid a STD by hooking up with someone else or maybe that is about how growing up and losing innocence brings you closer to realizing death is inevitable, I don´t know if any of these theories are true or were used as inspiration for the director but make you think about the possibility that in fact it could be a message from the director to new generations about taking care about themselves, their body, their future, family and friends, that you can´t trust in someone that you just met a couple of days ago and that bad things can follow you but you are the only one that can escape and beat them. Well at first sight it doesn´t look like any inspirational movie looks more like an artistic exercise because you won´t see blood, jump scares, creepy house so don´t expect a traditional horror thrill it is just a passionate work of a director that wants to show that horror can be a slow hunter with patience and decided to kill you. At the end I can say that even though for me is a weird movie, it is decent, deliver something that maybe sticks with you and if you don´t care a slow no bloody psychological movie well this is for you, despite not been one of those that makes you think and discover whats going to happen next I really enjoy this movie.

I have to be honest, religious films usually don’t grab me. The few I’ve seen, if I did see at all, either felt too preachy, too distant, or just plain dull. But this one? It surprised me. This is the first one that had me hooked and unblinking from the very beginning. I give it to the director, Edward Berger, for not making it a sermon dressed up as cinema. It is a political thriller in holy robes and I just couldn’t look away.

One of the first things that caught my eye was the cardinals smoking. It made me pause for a second and I thought, Wait, are cardinals even allowed to smoke? Maybe allowed isn’t the right word. Are cardinals ‘supposed’ to be seen smoking? Isn’t smoking considered a sin amongst these high priests? Watching these men of faith puffing away while deciding the next Pope was so jarring, yet so human, that it pulled me deeper into the story.

I’m not Catholic, but I’ve always found their rituals fascinating. The incense, the chanting, the weight of tradition. This film doesn’t shy away from showing all of that, and honestly? It’s mesmerizing. The Vatican setting is magnificent: grand halls drenched in candlelight, I had the feeling of being inside walls that have held centuries of secrets and for a second I felt unworthy. The atmosphere is both sacred and suffocating, like the walls themselves are listening.

And then there are the costumes, scarlet robes, gold-trimmed vestments, each detail making the cardinals look less like men and more like players in some ancient ritual. It’s beautiful but also intimidating, like power made visible in fabric.

Performance-wise, Ralph Fiennes carries the film with quiet brilliance. His Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, isn’t loud or flashy, he’s conflicted, cautious and merely human in a world that demands perfection. The supporting cast (Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Isabella Rossellini) add layers of intrigue, making it feel less like a religious ceremony and more like a chess match where every piece has its own agenda. had to look up the real names of the supporting casts

What makes Conclave standout to me is the tension that simmers beneath its silence. Those whispered confessions, subtle glance, felt loaded. This isn’t about saints and sinners, but about ambition, guilt, faith and survival, all locked in the same room.

Would I recommend it? With a hand to my chest, I absolutely do. Even if you’re not into religious films (like me), this one grabs you with its atmosphere and drama. It’s slow, sure, but it’s the kind of slow burn that makes you lean forward, not tune out.

I am yet to find out if this film won an Oscars because it is absolutely deserving of it in my honest opinion.
Rating? A 9/10 from me.

The first thing I can say about this series based on the video games released for PlayStation 1 and 2 is that it completely captures the crazy essence of the video game, especially in its second season. The first season is like a kind of introduction to the characters, but it does so very successfully. The truth is that, despite being quite simple, it manages to connect with us quickly, especially because the episodes last half an hour and you don't feel like they're stretching the plot to fill the time. To a certain extent, each episode can have a kind of self-conclusion, but the first season is a single season with a continuous plot, and the same goes for the second.
The interesting thing about this series is that it has that 90s style, in terms of budget, but it's still a highly entertaining series throughout. Almost every episode is essential viewing, and you almost have to watch it to laugh and enjoy yourself. However, it is extremely violent, and if you're not a big fan of gore and extreme violence, I wouldn't recommend watching it because the series constantly makes pretty heavy black humor jokes and pretty strong jokes about violence, even touching on topics like cannibalism.
What can I say about these two seasons? I must say that the series simply manages to shine wonderfully, and I hope they continue to release more seasons of this series because I think it has enormous potential, especially since its characters have enough charisma to continue the story.

The show begins engaging you in this nightmare (and, yes, Emily, you're a syntax-bending Nightmare) when a spaceship crashes into Prodigy City with Xenomorphs aboard. This isn't just an Aliens rip-off, it's based in real, palpable fear. I remember how the creatures began to slither out, alien bodies writhing in dark corridors, and I almost jumped out of my seat. It was not just the visuals rendering fear, but the fear seeped into my bones.

And this twist, Wendy, a child with a synthetic adult form, but a child's mind, leading a team of hybrids called the Lost Boys to investigate the crash. There's that scene where a hybrid called Nibs gets attacked by a parasite crawling out of a cat's skull. It was vile and interesting, and made me feel so helpless when I watched through my fingers.

I couldn't reconcile Wendy's sugary sweet voice with her horrific power. There was an innocence in the way she moved under that robotic shell like watching your child grow up too quickly and it caught in my throat as a mixture of longing and fear. And when she finds her brother, Hermit, who doesn't even know she's a hybrid, I felt that ache for connection, for a sibling bond, twisted by reality into something I could never hope to understand.

But it's not just alien monsters in the show--it's about the cruelty of humanity. The Xenomorphs were never truly the villains; those responsible were the corporate titans, creating hybrids out of desperation, using consciousness as a product. Watching the pajama-clad Boy Kavalier strut through the corporate corridors worshiping Peter Pan was like being led through a funhouse of self-reflective mirrors, each one reflecting our own distorted priorities.

And yet in between the monstrous and the corrupt there are moments of surprising tenderness. I sank with the Lost Boys as they played catch with manufactured bodies and my heart sank, too, when Morrow the cyborg was torn up over what it means to be human. Because it's not just horror-it's the break-up of identity.
There was one episode where a horror creature comes out of a sheep (yes, a sheep), and the actual sheep runs off as if it's trying to get away from that nightmare. That shot? Chilling. It wasn't merely the representation of a creature, it was fear so raw it jumped into me.

Metal or rock songs such as Black Sabbath's "The Mob Rules" and Metallica's "Wherever I May Roam" are used as the cliffhangers at the end of each episode. You're left not only on a cliffhanger but with guitars screaming inside your chest - the soundtrack of your fear and wonder.
When I finished Alien: Earth, I was more haunted than scared. It’s one thing to face monsters; it’s another to question whether the monsters you should fear are the ones dressed in flesh—or those in suits.

Have you ever watched an anime that left you feeling completely lost because you didn't understand anything that happened, neither at the beginning nor at the end, but you still liked it anyway? That's what happened to me with Kekkai Sensen. Even though I didn't understand anything about the plot without having to look up information on the internet as I watched it, something grabbed me, and that's why I eagerly awaited each new episode when the second season aired. Usually, when I can't understand an anime and it becomes too difficult for me to keep up, I give up on it, but I didn't give up on this one. I was even excited when they announced the second season, and I enjoyed it as much as the first. To this day, I still don't know why, but I'll leave you with some thoughts on it. Join me!

You can't imagine how hard it was for me to understand this series and keep up with it. Every new episode I watched left me more confused, but at the same time more intrigued. I guess my desire to know what was happening was greater than my confusion. The funny thing is that while I was watching the series, I searched the internet for someone who could explain what was happening, and I only found a bunch of people who were as confused as I was. But the funny thing is that even though they were also confused, they liked it and admitted that the series has a certain something that makes you want to watch it until the end. At least I wasn't alone anymore.

Supposedly, the scenario is as follows: a breach opened between Earth and the afterlife, and monsters from the other plane began to invade planet Earth, but New York City was trapped in a kind of impenetrable sphere. What I saw in the anime is a world where humans and monsters had to learn to coexist after that collapse. But of course, there is always someone who tries to disturb that peace, and that is where our protagonists appear, trying to maintain order between both worlds. The characters are charismatic, which is another reason why I decided to watch it until the end. The action is very good, it has comedy, super absurd moments, and plot twists that only ended up confusing me even more. Yes, it is possible to get even more confused.

Another thing I liked was the Opening and Ending themes from the first season, both of which were masterful. Some of you may have come across a parody of this peculiar and funny ending, but with characters from other anime series such as Naruto. It was so epic that several people decided to join in the dance, which is very funny. The animation is incredible, although in the second season I felt it declined a little, but that doesn't take away from its strange charm. I guess if I watch it about 20 more times, I'll understand how the plot was handled, but the funny thing is that many were as confused as I was, but still loved this crazy anime. So if you want to lose yourself for a moment and go crazy trying to understand a plot, I invite you to watch it. Maybe you'll understand it the first time around and can explain it to me because I'm still confused. Excuse this disoriented owl!

Steven Spielberg enjoys the reputation of being the most successful and influential American filmmaker in recent years not so much because his films have broken box office records as due to his exceptional ability to recognise and harness new trends, thereby paving the way for those who follow. Thanks to this, Spielberg can boast not only an exceptionally prolific but also a diverse filmography, meaning his contemporary films bear little resemblance to those he made several years ago. Naturally, this has been aided by his practice of offsetting every ultra-commercial summer blockbuster aimed at children and teenagers with a serious, ‘engaged’ autumn drama designed to chase ‘Oscars’. Ready Player One, which was released in 2018, belongs to Spielberg’s ‘summer’ repertoire but is particularly intriguing due to its utmost efforts to be ‘hip’—that is, in line with everything the youngest generations supposedly love, or at least what older generations believe they love.
The film is based on Ernest Cline’s eponymous 2010 novel, one of the first to draw inspiration and subject matter from the phenomenon of MMORPGs—multiplayer online video games in which millions of players create vivid avatars and virtual identities, and around which an impressive virtual economy has already emerged. The plot, meanwhile, is set in the relatively distant future—2045—when the world has become a polluted, overpopulated, and increasingly inhospitable place, making it understandable that most of its inhabitants have turned to Oasis, a virtual reality game where they can do almost anything they desire and become what they can only dream of in the real world. One such player is the narrator and protagonist, Wade Watts, alias Parzival (Tye Sheridan), a teenager from Columbus, Ohio. Like many players, Wade becomes obsessed with the grand hunt initiated by Oasis’s creator, James Halliday (Mark Rylance), shortly before his death. The goal is to find the so-called Easter eggs—keys that will grant the winner not only unimaginable material wealth in the real world but also control over Oasis. Wade is aided in his quest by a group of colourful virtual friends, though he becomes far more captivated by a player named Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), whose avatar he falls for. Complicating matters, the quest is infiltrated by the corporation IOI, whose director, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), dreams of seizing control of Oasis to dominate the world, stopping at nothing to achieve this in both the online and real worlds.
The extent to which Spielberg and the film industry have evolved over the past few decades is best illustrated by the fact that during filming, Spielberg scarcely needed to set foot on set. Scenes shot in the traditional manner—with live actors, physical sets, and conventional cameras—last approximately 11 minutes, while everything else was recreated using CGI and animation at Industrial Light and Magic studios. By comparison, Jurassic Park, which left audiences awestruck a quarter of a century earlier with its revolutionary special effects, featured only eight minutes of CGI. Considering Spielberg had already mastered CGI-driven filmmaking with the animated Adventures of Tintin several years prior, it is entirely understandable that Ready Player One emerges as one of the most visually impressive Hollywood films in recent times. However, the numerous scenes reconstructing the fantastical virtual worlds inhabited by the protagonists will hold even greater appeal for viewers well-versed in popular culture, particularly that of the 1980s, as the film teems with pop-culture references (explicitly acknowledged by characters as integral to the plot), encompassing films, TV series, pop music, and, of course, video games. Perhaps the most impressive of these scenes is Spielberg’s homage to his friend and colleague Stanley Kubrick, using CGI technology to guide the protagonists almost literally through Kubrick’s iconic horror film The Shining. Cynics, on the other hand, might argue that Ready Player One is at least partially autobiographical—that Spielberg attempts to present his own self-image to the audience through certain characters. This applies both to the character of Halliday, portrayed by the unrecognisable yet brilliant British actor Mark Rylance (drawing inspiration from Steve Jobs), and to Wade, played by the far more pallid Tye Sheridan, likely cast due to his relative physical resemblance to a young Spielberg. The rest of the cast is largely up to standard, though some of the finest talents, such as Simon Pegg, are relegated to near-forgotten cameos. Mendelsohn, meanwhile, excels as Sorrento, delivering one of the most striking yet oddly plausible villain portrayals in contemporary Hollywood cinema.
Despite the exceptional talents both in front of and behind the camera, Ready Player One falls far short not only of perfection but also of Spielberg’s highest standards. Despite efforts to diversify characters in today’s ‘politically correct’ context—such as casting Black lesbian actress Lena Waithe as Wade’s virtual friend Aech—the usual moral guardians have identified what they deem unacceptable sexism by today’s standards of champagne socialist sensibility, complaining that the protagonist’s heroic quest is motivated by heterosexual impulses toward a female character, thereby reducing Art3mis, despite being portrayed as a ‘strong, kick-ass female heroine’, to a mere ‘trophy’. However, Ready Player One suffers more profoundly from another form of disconnect with modern generations and their perspectives. This primarily stems from its foundation in 1980s nostalgia, meaning the film will be most appreciated and enjoyed by the fathers and grandfathers of its target audience. Even more problematic is the unanswered question of whether the 2045 world is a utopia or dystopia—that is, the ambiguous stance on whether a virtual world controlled by capitalist oligarchs, even those as likable as the geeky Halliday and his young heirs, represents part of the solution or part of the problem in the future world. Ready Player One, of course, attempts to depict the future optimistically, much as Spielberg’s Hollywood did with the present during the Obama era, giving the world a thumbs-up. Yet this may reflect less Spielberg’s faith in a better future than, at least within the context of this film, an unjustifiably rose-tinted nostalgia for a better past.
