Finally, one of the best spin-offs I've ever seen has ended. Or maybe even the best? Sure, there were some bad moments. Some may be annoyed by the typical Yellowstone patterns. In this case, the main problem was solved surprisingly quickly - what matters is the characters' journey, not its end. However, I think that these are not real reasons to complain if the series / film is generally good. Just as my partner and I complained about the Yellowstone finale, the ending of 1923 is more satisfying. I haven't asked my partner yet how she felt about the finale, which we watched on Sunday, but I know that at least in the case of romances and relationships between characters, she was delighted. I could see it in her face and the excitement with which she watched.
But from the beginning. 1923 is a direct prequel to Yellowstone, confirmed by the last episode, in which we saw the origin of one of the characters. This is a series about the Dutton family, wealthy and influential Ranchers. Tough people who, despite handling big money, have not turned their backs on nature, like most rich people. They live by understanding nature well and adapting to it. As all members of the Dutton family say, the world is too cruel and unjust to base ourselves solely on faith in God. We need to support ourselves with weapons and hard principles. Although I have seen and heard about several series showing several generations of a given family, none has engaged me so much. And not only me - the consecutive viewership records of Taylor Sheridan's series speak for themselves.
Instead of summarizing the plot of this series, I will focus on its advantages. Why? Practically every season of the Dutton saga looks the same or is based on the same patterns. Strong and independent people live in their own world, and greedy owners of corporations, companies, businessmen, etc. want to destroy another beautiful place on Earth. The Duttons fight them, if not in an open, brutal way (when the law allows it or you can pretend that "nothing like that happened" - after all, the headquarters from Washington will not make problems if all the residents of Montana know that their unofficial King did it), then with the letter of the law.
As I said, the plot is just a background for the goal the narrative is trying to achieve. The script plays a similar role for the heroes and heroines - we are supposed to enjoy the journey and the characters. Apart from the great casting and the perfect match of the actors, they are very talented and well-written. It seems that the Russells from Gilded Age are no longer the best-matched couple in the series that Asia and I have seen. And when we add elements of choreography, we are not seeing contemporary actors, but people from that time. A time when showers, electricity and cars were a similar novelty to today's super advanced AI models or other popular technologies.
Taylor Sheridan is a man of many talents. He has a rich imagination, can write great dialogue and create vivid characters. He is also sufficiently detailed, but not overly so - he knows when to stop. He can look at every issue from both sides of the coin and likes to ask questions that have no easy answers (both for right-wingers, left-wingers or other dualisms). What's more, he knows when to add a pinch of romanticism and when to pour in hard, brutal realism. Or the other way around. He also knows how to put it all together into one logical whole, so that the viewer can relax and at the same time think about what they have just watched. Especially when presenting love relationships of any type. When reviewing anime, I often praise the authors of City Hunter and Nana. Taylor is on the same level as Ai Yazawa and Tsukasa Hojo. Masterful. As with the aforementioned authors, she uses the entire bodies of the actors to present her vision and express specific emotions. Dialogue is tailored to the appropriate person, or rather, the role she is playing. The same goes for body language and voice tone, which complement the dialogue or emphasize specific words. Or not, when they are cleverly veiled.
I'll start with Helen Mirren, because that's who I was thinking of when writing the previous 2 sentences. You can see that she is an old-school theater actress. It doesn't matter if she plays a wife, a ranch queen, a soldier, a Housewife, a woman, a sensitive caregiver or plays another role, she always does it with incredible reverence. Experience and skills flow from each of them. She usually behaves like the queen she is, at least on the ranch. She doesn't ask, she gives orders and, contrary to appearances, she knows everything about her kingdom. She always walks straight and elegant, drawing all attention to herself. More than one man was shocked when Cara Dutton, in a truly soldierly manner, gave a painfully precise order. As soon as a situation arises that overwhelms her, she smoothly transforms into a humble woman, aware of her shortcomings. Not only towards her husband, but also towards their employees. This shows great wisdom and, contrary to appearances, it is not a truism. As we see every day, such people often get their heads soda water.
It is similar in the case of her relationship with Harrison Ford. Here, the matter gets a bit complicated due to the fact that being in a lasting relationship, you have to play several pianos at the same time (and when a child is added, at least one instrument is added, which you have to additionally manage). You have to be a lover, a wife, a carer, a doctor, a person responsible for harmony in the home, a first teacher. Just like a man, he is a lover, husband, carer, defender, provider of resources, head of the family, first teacher for his woman. The issue of sex is eliminated due to their age, but there is still hot flirtation. Helen's texts are razor-sharp, but they do not always serve to hurt, or rather, I should say, they mainly create such an appearance. More often than not, they strengthen, immunize, and in difficult moments, fill the male heart with the will to fight. Women can light a fire in a man's heart out of almost nothing. As if they had an invisible gallon of gasoline in one hand and a charged lighter in the other. Harrison knows that these are jokes and for this reason, he also allows himself to make bolder jokes / allegories about his beloved. She does not remain indebted to him. Seeing Harrison and Mirren, I see a prosperous and well-matched, old married couple. Snarky, direct, they know every inch of each other's body and character. They understand each other without words, they only need to exchange glances and they know what is most important. Excellent chemistry, it even affects "grumpy-Ford".
It is difficult for me to say anything more about Harrison, because he plays the role of a simple man. Not a simpleton, but a simple but serious man who has no time for nonsense. Because of this, he is dry, sharp, but fair to the point of pain. He is also not evil, he is simply aware of his worth. He also knows how much blood his family has shed protecting and building their kingdom. Even his repetitive, "grumpy" type of acting (the thing is that Grandpa Ford rarely tries to add something of his own to the role and often plays on so-called "autopilot") fits this bitter, tired of life man who would love to shoot himself in the head, but can't because of the burden of responsibility. Not only for his wife, but also for the ranch, owned by his nephew, Spencer Dutton.
I don't know if Spencer is the dream of every female on Earth, but I'm sure that most Ladies would like to have such a husband. Handsome, healthy and strong as a bull. Smart, intelligent, knows how to find his way in company and there are no situations that are impossible for him. A self-confident, charming, gallant lover with a strong personality. Ruthless and cruel to people who threaten him or his family. And on top of that, rich, after all, he is the heir to the Dutton fortune, recognized by Cara and Jacob Dutton.
But what would a man be, even one like that, without an equally brave, attractive and strong woman by his side? He would certainly still be attractive, but for how long? The beginning of the series shows that "something is missing" for him, which is why he wanders the world. Even though 1923 is Julia Schlaepfer's second important role in her career, she showed incredible talent. Maybe it's the magic of the director, screenwriter, the excellent chemistry between her and Spencer. Maybe I succumbed to this charm... Nevertheless, seeing Julia and Brandon Sklenar together, I don't feel the difference between them and the Mirren-Ford couple. Sure, they definitely don't have as much experience, probably the same with their acting skills, but their relationship is just as pure, real and perfect. Apart from one fragment of the script, which also fits perfectly, I wouldn't change even a comma in their part of the script. Every sentence, every flirt, every gesture, smile, sadness, joy, any feeling is so sincere that I want to cry when I just think about them a little longer. Like Spencer's aunt and uncle, they communicate without words despite coming from completely different, alien worlds. Alex is the daughter of impoverished noblemen from England, and Spencer is a typical rancher who loves dirt, hardship and fighting.
As I wrote in my Yellowstone reviews, Taylor also handles non-conservative or romantic relationships. In Yellowstone I praised Beth and Rip, here for a change I will praise the Creighton relationship. Jerome Flynn (Bronn from Game of Thrones) and Sarah Randall Hunt made a very nice couple of ordinary people. They were initially wronged by Jacob, who protected his family at the expense of the rest. No wonder, any sane person would do the same in his place. Banner Creighton himself admits it, probably even several times. Although he wants to take bloody revenge on Dutton, he does not do it because of greed. Sure, he is not a saint and this feeling at some point pushes him to act, but... Sorry, I went a bit too far. Let me say this, avoiding spoilers, like the Duttons, Banner is neither unequivocally bad nor good. You could even say that "the good wolf" dominates "the bad one". This is visible in his conversations with his wife. A simple woman who, like Cara Dutton, tries to create the best possible home for her husband and son. Although she lacks the knowledge of Alex Dutton or the life wisdom of Ford's wife, she makes up for it with sincere affection and full support for her husband. A relationship unlike any other I have written about in relation to Sheridan's series.
It's a shame that the second season ended this story. I would have liked to spend more time with these characters. I would have gladly accepted even one, noticeably worse season. Some complained about the 2 less successful seasons of Yellowstone, but aside from the situational, short-term boredom, they didn't bother me. I watched this series for all the characters - no matter if the Indians, the ranch workers, or the Duttons themselves. Well, the Indians. We also got the ending of the storyline that we started in season 1. Do you remember this inglorious situation (to put it mildly) with Catholic schools, where Indians were forcibly conscripted? A few years ago, there was quite a lot of talk about it. Often, it was behavior worthy of Nazis - parents were robbed of their own children, who were quite often beaten, raped and tortured. Although Taylor Sheridan does not hide his conservative, right-wing views (and is also supposedly an asshole by nature, which he himself does not hide at all), he perfectly showed the storyline about the school. There is no sugarcoating of reality or avoiding painful topics. Taylor shows everything as it was. Not literally, after all it's not a horror film, but uses every opportunity to emphasize human meanness and the suffering of the innocent. He exposes nudity, the blows that the Indian receives are not polite, the scenes of molestation are prolonged, we see the "joy" of the rapist and the pain of the victim. My partner and I have often been disgusted by these scenes and enjoyed the scenes of justice.
In other words, I recommend it to everyone. Even those who can't stand romantic works. It is so insanely well written that even a heart of stone will "let go" of some feelings. And even if you are that insensitive, you may like this short, closed story. Everyone will find something for themselves. I have already written about the actors, the script and the attractive plot. The soundtrack created by Brian Tyler perfectly complements it and gives it the right atmosphere. The same with the set design, you can see the creators' refinement in numerous details. Sure, they definitely left out a few things, but too often I or Asia would say to ourselves, commenting on specific scenes: "That's right, I know that from XXX and YYY." 1923 doesn't deserve a 10/10 as a whole, but thanks to this series I understood why women watch such works with emotions. Paraphrasing the words of the undisputed Master of Cinematography, 1923 is an absolute cinema in terms of romance. From me 9/10.
W końcu zakończył się jeden z najlepszych spin-offów, jakie kiedykolwiek widziałem. A może nawet najlepszy? Jasne, były gorsze momenty. Niektórych mogą wkurzyć typowe dla Yellowstone schematy. W tym przypadku, że główny problem rozwiązano zaskakująco szybko - liczy się droga bohaterów, a nie jej koniec. Uważam jednak, że to nie są prawdziwe powody do narzekania, jeśli serial / film generalnie jest dobry. Tak jak ze swoją partnerką marudziliśmy na finał Yellowstone, tak zakończenie 1923 jest bardziej satysfakcjonujące. Jeszcze nie pytałem mojej partnerki, jak ocenia finał, który obejrzeliśmy w niedzielę, ale wiem że przynajmniej w przypadku romansów i relacji między postaciami była zachwycona. Widziałem to po jej twarzy i przejęciu, z jakim oglądała.
Ale od początku. 1923 to bezpośredni prequel Yellowstone, potwierdził to ostatni odcinek, w którym zobaczyliśmy genezę jednego z bohaterów. To serial opowiadający o rodzinie Duttonów, bogatych i wpływowych Ranczerach. Twardych ludziach, którzy mimo obracania dużymi pieniędzmi, nie odwrócili się plecami do natury, jak większość bogaczy. Oni żyją dzięki dobremu rozumieniu przyrody i dostosowywaniu się do niej. Jak to mówią wszyscy członkowie rodziny Duttonów, świat jest zbyt okrutny i niesprawiedliwy, by bazować wyłącznie na wierze w Boga. Trzeba się wspierać bronią oraz twardymi zasadami. Choć widziałem i słyszałem o kilku serialach pokazujących kilka generacji danej rodziny, to jeszcze żaden tak bardzo mnie nie zaangażował. Zresztą, nie tylko mnie - kolejne rekordy oglądalności seriali Taylora Sheridana mówią same za siebie.
Zamiast streszczać fabułę tego serialu, skupię się na jego zaletach. Czemu? Praktycznie każdy sezon sagi Duttonów wygląda tak samo lub opiera się na tych samych schematach. Silni i niezależni ludzie żyją sobie w swoim świecie, a chciwi właściciele korporacji, firm, biznesmeni itd. chcą zniszczyć kolejne piękne miejsce na Ziemi. Duttonowie walczą z nimi, jak nie w otwarty, brutalny sposób (gdy prawo na to pozwala lub można udawać, że "nic takiego się nie stało" - w końcu centrala z Waszyngtonu nie będzie robiła problemów, jeśli wszyscy mieszkańcy Montany wiedzą, że zrobił to ich nieformalny Król), to za pomocą litery prawa.
Tak jak już mówiłem, fabuła to tylko tło dla celu, do jakiego dąży narracja. Podobną rolę pełni scenariusz w przypadku bohaterów i bohaterek - mamy rozkoszować się drogą i postaciami. Pomijając świetny casting i doskonałe dopasowanie aktorów do siebie, są bardzo utalentowani i świetnie napisani. Wygląda na to, że Russellowie z Gilded Age nie są już najlepiej dopasowaną parą w serialach, które widzieliśmy z Asią. A gdy dodamy do nich elementy choreografii, to nie widzimy współczesnych aktorów, a ludzi z tamtych czasów. Czasów, gdy prysznic, elektryczność i samochody, stanowiły podobną nowość do dzisiejszych, super zaawansowanych modeli AI lub innych, popularnych technologii.
Taylor Sheridan to człowiek wielu talentów. Ma bogatą wyobraźnię, potrafi pisać świetne dialogi oraz kreować wyraziste postacie. Jest też dostatecznie szczegółowy, ale nie do przesady - wie kiedy należy przestać. Potrafi spojrzeć na każdą sprawę z obu stron medalu oraz lubi stawiać pytania, na które nie ma łatwych odpowiedzi (zarówno dla prawicowców, jak i lewicowców lub innych dualizmów). Co więcej, wie kiedy można dodać szczyptę romantyzmu, a kiedy należy lać pełnym strumieniem twardy, brutalny realizm. Lub na odwrót. Wie też jak to wszystko połączyć w jedną, logiczną całość, by widz mógł się zrelaksować, a jednocześnie zastanowić nad tym, co właśnie obejrzał. Zwłaszcza przy przedstawianiu miłosnych relacji każdego typu. Przy recenzjach anime, bardzo często chwalę autorów City Hunter i Nany. Taylor jest na tym samym poziomie, co Ai Yazawa i Tsukasa Hojo. Mistrzowskim. Podobnie jak w przypadku w/w autorów, wykorzystuje całe ciała aktorów do przedstawienia swojej wizji oraz ekspresji konkretnych emocji. Dialogi są dostosowane do stosownej osoby, czy raczej, roli jaką pełni. Tak samo w przypadku mowy ciała i tembru głosu, które dopełniają dialog lub kładą akcent na konkretne słowa. Lub nie, gdy są sprytne zawoalowane.
Zacznę od Helen Mirren, gdyż to o niej myślałem pisząc 2 poprzednie zdania. Widać, że to teatralna aktorka starej szkoły. Nie ważne, czy gra żonę, królową rancza, żołnierkę, Pani Domu, kobietę, czułą opiekunkę lub pełni inną rolę, zawsze robi to z niesamowitym pietyzmem. Z każdej z nich wprost wylewa się doświadczenie i umiejętności. Zazwyczaj zachowuje się jak królowa, którą jest, przynajmniej na obszarze rancza. Ona nie prosi, ona wydaje polecenia i wbrew pozorom, wie wszystko na temat swojego królestwa. Zawsze idzie wyprostowana i elegancka, skupiając na sobie całą uwagę. Nie jeden mężczyzna był w szoku, gdy Cara Dutton w iście żołnierski sposób, wydała do bólu precyzyjny rozkaz. Gdy tylko pojawi się sytuacja, która ją przerasta, płynnie zmienia się w pokorną, świadomą swoich braków kobietę. Nie tylko względem męża, ale też ich pracowników. Świadczy to o wielkiej mądrości i wbrew pozorom, nie jest to truizm. Jak widzimy na co dzień, takim ludziom często uderza woda sodowa do głowy.
Podobnie jest w przypadku jej związku z Harrisonem Fordem. Tu sprawa trochę się komplikuje z uwagi na to, że będąc w trwałej relacji, trzeba grać jednocześnie na kilku fortepianach (a jak dojdzie dziecko, to dochodzi co najmniej jeden instrument, który trzeba dodatkowo ogarniać). Trzeba być kochanką, żoną, opiekunką, lekarzem, osobą odpowiedzialną za harmonię w domu, pierwszą nauczycielką. Tak jak mężczyzna, jest dla swojej kobiety kochankiem, mężem, opiekunem, obrońcą, dostarczycielem zasobów, głową rodziny, pierwszym nauczycielem. Kwestia seksu odpada z uwagi na ich wiek, ale pozostaje gorący flirt. Teksty Helen są ostre jak brzytwa, ale nie zawsze służą zranieniu, czy raczej powinienem powiedzieć, głównie sprawiają takie pozory. Częściej wzmacniają, uodparniają, a w ciężkich chwilach, wypełnia męskie serce wolą do walki. Kobiety potrafią niemal z niczego rozpalić ogień w męskim sercu. Tak jakby w 1 ręce miały niewidzialny galon benzyny, a 2 naładowaną zapalniczkę. Harrison wie, że to są żarty i z tego powodu, on również pozwala sobie na odważniejsze dowcipy / alegorie względem swojej ukochanej. Ta nie pozostaje mu dłużna. Widząc Harrisona i Mirren, widzę dobrze prosperujące i dopasowane, stare małżeństwo. Zgryźliwi, bezpośredni, znają każdy centymetr swojego ciała i charakteru. Rozumieją się bez słów, wystarczy że wymienią spojrzenia i wiedzą to co najważniejsze. Doskonała chemia, udziela się nawet "grumpy-Fordowi".
Trudno powiedzieć mi coś więcej na temat Harrisona, bo pełni rolę prostego mężczyzny. Nie prostaka, tylko prostego, ale poważnego mężczyzny, który nie ma czasu na bzdury. Przez to jest oschły, ostry, ale sprawiedliwy do bólu. Nie jest też zły, jest po prostu świadomy swojej wartości. Wie też ile krwi przelała jego rodzina chroniąc i budując swoje królestwo. Nawet jego powtarzalny, "marudny" typ aktorstwa (chodzi o to, że dziadek-Ford rzadko kiedy stara się dodać do roli coś od siebie i często gra na tzw. "autopilocie") pasuje do tego zgorzkniałego, zmęczonego życiem człowieka, który najchętniej strzeliłby sobie w łeb, ale nie może z uwagi na ciężar odpowiedzialności. Nie tylko za żonę, ale też ranczo, własność jego bratanka, Spencera Duttona.
Nie wiem, czy Spencer jest marzeniem każdej samiczki na Ziemi, ale jestem pewien, że większość Pań chciałaby mieć takiego męża. Przystojny, zdrowy i silny jak byk. Mądry, inteligentny, umie odnaleźć się w towarzystwie i nie ma dla niego sytuacji bez wyjścia. Pewny siebie, czarujący, szarmancki kochanek z silną osobowością. Bezwzględny i okrutny dla ludzi, którzy zagrożą jemu lub jego rodzinie. A do tego bogaty, w końcu to Dziedzic fortuny Duttonów, uznany przez Carę i Jacoba Dutton.
Kim byłby jednak mężczyzna, nawet taki, bez równie odważnej, atrakcyjnej i silnej kobiety u swego boku? Na pewno nadal byłby atrakcyjny, ale jak długo? Początek serialu pokazuje, że "czegoś mu brakuje", przez co wędruje po świecie. Mimo, że 1923 to druga istotna rola w karierze Julii Schlaepfer, to wykazała się niesamowitym talentem. Może to magia reżysera, scenarzysty, doskonałej chemii między nią, a Spencerem. Może ja uległem temu urokowi... Niemniej widząc Julię i Brandona Sklenara razem, nie czuję różnicy między nimi, a parą Mirren-Ford. Jasne, na pewno nie mają tyle doświadczenia, zapewne tak samo jest z umiejętnościami aktorskimi, ale ich relacja jest tak samo czysta, prawdziwa i doskonała. Poza jednym fragmentem scenariusza, który też idealnie pasuje, nie zmieniłbym nawet przecinka w ich części scenariusza. Każde zdanie, każdy flirt, każdy gest, uśmiech, smutek, radość, jakiekolwiek uczucie jest tak szczere, że chce mi się płakać, gdy tylko pomyślę o nich trochę dłużej. Podobnie jak wujostwo Spencera, dogadują się bez słów mimo, że pochodzą z zupełnie innych, obcych dla siebie światów. Alex jest córką zubożałych szlachciców z Anglii, a Spencer typowym ranczerem kochającym bród, trud i walkę.
Tak jak pisałem przy recenzjach Yellowstone, Taylor radzi sobie również z nie-konserwatywnymi lub romantycznymi związkami. W Yellowstone chwaliłem Beth i Ripa, tutaj dla odmiany pochwalę związek Creightonów. Jerome Flynn (Bronn z Gra o Tron) i Sarah Randall Hunt stworzyli bardzo fajną parę zwykłych ludzi. Ci na początku zostali skrzywdzeni przez Jacoba, który chronił swoją rodzinę kosztem reszty. Nie ma co się dziwić, każdy zdrowo myślący człowiek zrobiłby to samo będąc na jego miejscu. Banner Creighton sam to przyznaje, chyba nawet kilka razy. Mimo, że chce dokonać krwawej zemsty na Duttonie, to nie robi tego z powodu chciwości. Jasne, nie jest święty i to uczucie na pewnym etapie popycha go do czynów, ale... Przepraszam, zagalopowałem się trochę za daleko. Powiem tak, unikając spoilerów, podobnie jak Duttonowie, Banner nie jest ani jednoznacznie zły ani dobry. Można nawet powiedzieć, że "ten dobry wilk" dominuje nad "tym złym". Widać to po jego rozmowach z żoną. Prostą kobietą, która podobnie jak Cara Dutton, stara się stworzyć możliwie jak najlepszy dom dla męża i syna. Mimo, że brakuje jej wiedzy Alex Dutton lub mądrości życiowej żony Forda, nadrabia to szczerym uczuciem i pełnym wsparciem wobec męża. Związek odmienny od wszystkich, o których pisałem poruszając temat seriali autorstwa Sheridana.
Szkoda, że drugi sezon zakończył tę historię. Chciałbym dłużej posiedzieć z tymi bohaterami. Z przyjemnością przyjąłbym nawet jeden, zauważalnie gorszy sezon. Niektórzy narzekali na 2 mniej udane sezony Yellowstone, ale pomijając sytuacyjną, krótkotrwałą nudę, nie przeszkadzały mi. Oglądałem ten serial dla wszystkich bohaterów - nie ważne, czy Indian, pracowników rancza, czy samych Duttonów. No właśnie, Indian. Dostaliśmy też zakończenie wątku, który rozpoczęliśmy w 1 sezonie. Kojarzycie tę niechlubną sytuację (delikatnie mówiąc) z katolickimi szkołami, do których siłą wcielano Indian? Parę lat temu było o tym dość głośno. Często było to zachowanie godne nazistów - okradano rodziców z ich własnych dzieci, które dość często były bite, gwałcone i torturowane. Mimo, że Taylor Sheridan nie ukrywa swoich konserwatywnych, prawicowych poglądów (a poza tym jest podobno dupkiem z charakteru, czego on sam bynajmniej nie ukrywa), to doskonale pokazał wątek dotyczący szkoły. Nie ma w nim pudrowania rzeczywistości i uciekania od bolesnych tematów. Taylor pokazuje wszystko tak jak było. Nie dosłownie, w końcu to nie horror, ale korzysta z każdej możliwości do podkreślenia ludzkiej podłości i cierpienia niewinnych. Eksponuje nagość, ciosy które otrzymuje Indianka nie są ugrzecznione, sceny molestowania przeciągają się, widzimy "radość" gwałciciela i ból ofiary. Nie raz wraz ze swoją partnerką brzydziliśmy się tymi scenami i cieszyliśmy scenami sprawiedliwości.
Innymi słowy, polecam każdemu. Nawet tym, którzy nie cierpią romantycznych dzieł. To jest tak obłędnie dobrze napisane, że nawet serce z kamienia "wypuści" jakieś uczucia. A nawet jeśli jesteście aż tak nieczuli, to być może polubicie tę krótką, zamkniętą historię. Każdy znajdzie coś dla siebie. O aktorach, scenariuszu i atrakcyjnej fabule już napisałem.
