Lee Cronin is an Irish film director known for his graphic horror, full of gore and explicit scenes that leave no one indifferent. One of his most outstanding and well-known films was Evil Dead Rise, part of a trilogy that will be completed this year with Evil Dead Burn. But Cronin wasn't the only one involved in this film; James Wan, a man who has directed several high-profile horror titles—The Conjuring series, Evil Dead, Annabelle, etc.—was also involved. And if that weren't enough, it was produced by Blumhouse. But why do I say this? Well, because one would think that with such names attached to a story, it would be impressive, but for me, it fell far short.

We have a family living in Cairo, as the father is a journalist working there. One day, their daughter Katie disappears without a trace while she's in their garden talking to someone unknown. Naturally, a search begins, but it ultimately leads nowhere. About eight years pass, and the family returns to the United States, starts a new life, and has another daughter, but the memory of Katie remains vivid. Everything changes when the parents receive a call from Egypt claiming their missing daughter has reappeared, but in a much darker and more desolate state.

Katie wasn't the same; she was a soulless body, a vessel housing something far more sinister and ancient, possessing unimaginable malevolent power. Despite the clear physical and behavioral evidence that something was wrong with Katie, her parents, as anyone would, decided to take her home. As expected, things were never the same again. The entire atmosphere and environment changed completely, transforming a family home into a nightmare where bizarre things happen. From here on, we witness the typical possession stories we're familiar with, alongside the family trying to understand what's really going on, especially the father, with his journalistic instincts.

All the scenes depicting gore and the raw brutality of being possessed by a 6,000-year-old demon are well done. The makeup is top-notch, the visual effects are decent, and there are a couple of things I didn't like, but overall it's watchable. My problem? I never connected with the fear aspect. Demons and children are generally considered the most frightening elements in a horror film, and combining them should result in something spectacular. However, I never saw Katie possessed with fear. Perhaps that was the director's intention, to continue seeing the sweetness and innocence of the girl beneath her damaged body, but the fact is, I never felt the suspense or terror that others might have.

In the end, the story isn't just about possession; it's also about something ancient, and the demon migrates from body to body through rituals. The connection to ancient Egyptian history is cool; at least they gave meaning and depth to the origin of it all. The acting was fine, nothing remarkable, although the actress playing the little girl did a good job. Playing those roles isn't easy, so that deserves recognition. It's an average film, ideal if you're looking for something light on horror. I give it a 5.5/10. I had high expectations that ultimately weren't met. I've included the trailer below.

He is typically relegated to a peripheral detail—a ranting voice on a radio, a distant figure on a balcony—or his story is truncated to its spectacular, fiery demise in the Berlin bunker of 1945. Attempts to craft a genuine biographical film, one that tackles the formative years and the intricate political ascent that made the bunker ending possible, have been exceedingly rare. The most ambitious of these rare attempts is the 2003 Canadian-American two-part television miniseries, Hitler: The Rise of Evil. Directed by Christian Duguay and boasting a considerable budget and an impressive international cast, it aimed to provide a comprehensive account of how a failed artist from Austria became the Führer of Germany. The adult Hitler, portrayed by Robert Carlyle, emerges in Munich just as the First World War breaks out. Beyond this basic utility, the miniseries falters, and its failures are rooted in a fundamental tension between its scale and its sensibility.

Yet, this solid craftsmanship is persistently undermined by Christian Duguay’s direction, which often feels overly ‘artsy’ in a manner that betrays its television origins. The use of slow-motion, dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, and a sometimes intrusive score strives for a portentous, epic gravity but frequently lands as melodramatic and aesthetically insecure. It evokes the style of a high-end television movie from the early 2000s, lacking the visual discipline or narrative confidence of a serious cinematic historical epic.

The miniseries’ most crippling flaw, however, lies at its very heart: the portrayal of Adolf Hitler by Robert Carlyle. By 2003, Carlyle had built a formidable career on playing volatile, psychologically damaged, and often terrifying individuals, most famously the feral Begbie in Trainspotting. Here, he does not so much act the part of Hitler as he transplants Begbie into historical dress. He is portrayed as a pathetic coward (flinching during the Putsch), an animal abuser (callously beating a dog), a sexual pervert (in his relationship with Geli), a hypocrite, and a man possessed of a preternatural talent for insulting and alienating every ally, supporter, or family member who crosses his path.

This approach creates a fatal narrative paradox. If Hitler was indeed this consistently repellent, this obviously unstable and vile in all his interpersonal dealings, the central question of the miniseries—how did he rise to power?—becomes not just unanswered but unanswerable. It renders his ascent utterly implausible. How could such a figure, devoid of charm or strategic subtlety, captivate the masses in his thousands? How could he outmanoeuvre seasoned political operators and win the crucial backing of the conservative elite, the military, and industrialists? The series gestures at the economic desperation of the Depression and the failures of the Weimar Republic, but it never meaningfully connects these conditions to the specific appeal of this man. A more daring and intellectually honest film might have explored Hitler as a vessel—a figure who gave articulate, violent expression to dark currents of resentment, nationalism, and anti-Semitism that already coursed through segments of German society. It might have shown the seductive power of his oratory, the magnetic quality that contemporaries attested to, even as they found him personally odd. Duguay and his writers lack either the inclination or the courage for such complexity. They opt instead for a simplistic caricature of evil, which, ironically, makes the historical evil less comprehensible and thus less frightening.

This failure is thrown into sharp relief when contrasted with a far superior film about Hitler, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Downfall (2004). That film achieved something remarkable and controversial: it humanised Hitler. Through Bruno Ganz’s meticulous, haunting performance, Hitler is portrayed not as a raving demon but as a human being—ageing, physically failing, capable of courtesy to his staff, and yet utterly deluded and morally bankrupt. This humanisation is not an exoneration; it is a terrifying explanation. It forces the viewer to confront the uncomfortable truth that monstrous acts are perpetrated not by cartoon villains but by people who can appear normal, even charismatic. Downfall shows how a nation could be seduced by such a man. The Rise of Evil, by making its Hitler a one-note psychopath from the outset, lets Germany—and by extension, the viewer—off the hook. It suggests that only a society of fools or fellow monsters could follow such an obvious madman, fostering a dangerous sense of historical superiority in the audience.

Perhaps sensing the dramatic vacuum at the centre of their protagonist, Duguay and Pielmeier attempt to create moral counterweights. The most prominent is Fritz Gerlich (Matthew Modine), a crusading journalist who makes it his life’s mission to expose and stop Hitler, a quest that leads to his martyrdom in Dachau. Modine plays him with saintly conviction, but the character is a hollow archetype, a mere plot device representing ‘good’. More complex, and more wasted, is the character of Ernst Hanfstaengl (Liev Schreiber), an early elite supporter who becomes increasingly disillusioned. Schreiber is competent, but the writing is thin, ignoring Hanfstaengl’s fascinating connections to American high society (including a friendship with Franklin D. Roosevelt) and reducing his internal conflict to a few worried glances. Julianna Margulies, as his wife Helene, is given even less to do, despite the historical intrigue of Hitler’s peculiar fascination with her. These characters feel like obligatory checkboxes rather than fully realised individuals whose lives intersect tragically with history.

The miniseries’ shaky relationship with historical fidelity is further highlighted by the very public departure of its consultant, the eminent British historian Ian Kershaw. Kershaw, the author of a highly respected two-volume biography of Hitler, was initially attached to the project but later distanced himself from the final product. While not an unprecedented occurrence in historical filmmaking, it is a telling indictment from a scholar whose work meticulously analyses the structural conditions and personal agency that facilitated Hitler’s rise—precisely the analysis this film lacks.

The Rise of Evil was also hampered by self-inflicted controversy unrelated to its artistic merits. One of its producers, Ed Gernon, gave an interview drawing explicit parallels between Hitler’s rise and the contemporary political climate surrounding the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, even making comparisons between Hitler and President George W. Bush. The comments caused a firestorm, and Gernon was swiftly fired by the network, CBS. This incident not only created unwanted publicity but also underscored a deeper problem with the miniseries: its clumsy, heavy-handed approach to historical analogy. By reducing Adolf Hitler to a snarling, pre-ordained monster from childhood, it makes his world-historical success inexplicable and prevents any meaningful exploration of the societal pathologies that enabled him. It offers a checklist of events but no understanding of them. For those genuinely interested in the complex, chilling story of how a democracy can commit suicide and a dictator can be born from its ruins, the three hours spent on this flawed piece of television would be far better invested in reading a single chapter of Kershaw’s biography or watching a rigorous documentary. The Rise of Evil ultimately commits the greatest sin a work about history can make: it renders the past not just simplified, but fundamentally boring and inert, a parade of cartoon villains and saintly victims that teaches us nothing about the darker potentials of human societies, including our own.

Released in 2016 and directed by Todd Phillips, War Dogs tells the unbelievable real life story of two young men who somehow became international arms dealers during the Iraq War. The plot follows David reconnecting with Efraim, who has figured out how to bid on small Pentagon weapons contracts. At first the jobs are minor, but the money starts growing fast, and before long they are involved in international deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

One thing that makes the movie so fascinating is knowing most of this actually happened. The idea that two inexperienced young guys could end up operating inside the global arms business sounds completely insane, but that real life absurdity gives the film much of its appeal.

Bradley Cooper appears in a smaller but important role as Henry Girard, an experienced international arms dealer tied to much bigger operations. Cooper brings a calm intensity to the role that immediately changes the tone whenever he appears on screen.

Todd Phillips directs the movie with a flashy style clearly inspired by films like Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall Street. There is narration, quick editing, loud music, and moments designed to make the characters seem larger than life. Sometimes the style pushes a little too hard, but overall it fits the story well.

The chemistry between Jonah Hill and Miles Teller is probably the movie’s biggest strength. Hill brings nonstop chaotic energy while Teller slowly becomes more uncomfortable as the consequences of their actions become harder to ignore.

The film is also genuinely funny throughout. A lot of the comedy comes from how casually reckless these characters are while dealing with extremely dangerous situations. Watching them stumble through international weapons deals while acting like immature kids creates some great moments.

At the same time, the movie does not completely ignore the darker side of the story. As the money grows, greed and ego slowly destroy the friendship between David and Efraim. That emotional collapse gives the film more depth than people might expect going in.

Some scenes become surprisingly tense, especially once the characters start operating in dangerous parts of the world. The Iraq convoy sequence stands out because it suddenly reminds the audience these guys are playing with very real risks.

Now yes, parts of War Dogs are definitely a little corny. Certain slow motion shots and narration moments try a bit too hard to look cool. But honestly, that exaggerated style almost fits the personalities of the characters themselves because Efraim especially sees himself as some kind of untouchable legend.

In the end, War Dogs remains a modern classic to me because it is funny, chaotic, tense, and incredibly rewatchable. Jonah Hill gives one of the best performances of his career, the true story behind the film makes everything even crazier, and Todd Phillips keeps the pacing sharp from beginning to end. True Detective’s first season is often hailed as a masterpiece of modern television, a gritty, philosophically dense crime saga that redefined the potential of the anthology format. Its third episode, The Locked Room, originally aired in January 2014, represents a crucial pivot point. It is here that the show’s meticulously constructed atmosphere of dread begins to coalesce into a more tangible plot, while simultaneously exposing the narrative risks inherent in its unique structure. It shows many of the episode’s nascent tensions—between procedural investigation and character study, between lofty thematic ambition and potential soap opera melodrama.

+The Locked Room+ primarily serves to deepen the partnership between Detectives Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey). The 1995 timeline, now clearly spanning weeks or months, shows them settled into a rhythm. The central investigation—the hunt for the ritualistic killer of Dora Lange—advances through a breakthrough: the discovery of a “locked room” at a ruined church, which leads them to a suspect, Reggie Ledoux (Charles Halford). However, the investigation itself often feels secondary. Writer Nic Pizzolatto uses the procedural framework less as an engine for plot and more as a container for exploring the corrosive effects of time, belief, and partnership on these two deeply flawed men.

This character-centric approach yields the episode’s greatest strength and its most glaring weakness. The strength lies in the phenomenal performances and the nuanced writing of the Hart-Cohle dynamic. Scenes such as their visit to a revivalist tent, where Cohle holds forth on his “anti-theistic nihilism” to a bemused preacher ( Shea Whigham), are electric. They are less about clue-gathering and more about philosophical combat, with Hart having now developed a weary, practised resistance to his partner’s bleak worldview. The dialogue crackles with a poetic, menacing intelligence that remains the season’s signature.

However, the focus on the duo’s private lives threatens to veer into soap-opera territory. The episode dedicates significant time to the domestic fallout of their partnership. In a move that feels contrived, Maggie Hart (Michelle Monaghan) invites Cohle to mow their lawn in Martin’s absence. Hart’s discovery of this fact leads to a superb, tightly wound scene from Harrelson, who masterfully conveys seething jealousy beneath a veneer of professional camaraderie. Yet, the premise itself—the wife casually enlisting her husband’s misanthropic, socially awkward partner for gardening chores—strains credibility. It serves the drama of Martin’s insecurity but feels like a narrative contrivance to manufacture tension.

This trend continues with the infamous “double date” sequence. The Hart’s attempt to set Cohle up with a friend is narratively functional: it indirectly reveals the end of Martin’s affair with his mistress (Alexandra Daddario), a plot point handled with frustrating obliqueness. This development also disappoints male viewers who might have hoped for more of Daddario’s presence. More problematically, the scene reinforces Hart’s hypocrisy and emotional volatility. While this is consistent with his character, the episode’s structure—jumping between weighty cosmic horror and suburban marital spats—creates a jarring tonal dissonance. The profound and the mundane sit uneasily side-by-side, and at times the latter undermines the former.

The episode’s pacing is also worthy of scrutiny. The dual-timeline structure, so effective in episodes one and two, begins to show its limitations when asked to convey the passage of longer periods within the 1995 story. The narrative must use shorthand—the growing familiarity between the men, the changed dynamics at home—to suggest weeks of investigation. This sometimes leaves the core police work feeling nebulous. The breakthrough, when it comes, feels almost perfunctory, a piece of evidence discovered off-screen that propels them towards Ledoux.

Yet, for all these criticisms, The Locked Room builds to a finale of immense, unsettling power. The identification of Ledoux as their “man with green ears” is delivered not with triumphalism but with a quiet, grim certainty. The episode’s final moments are its most iconic: Cohle, under the influence of narcotics from his undercover days, experiences a terrifying vision of a swirling, vortex-like sky and a masked, antlered figure in a field. This is not a cheap jump-scare but a profound articulation of the show’s central theme—the intrusion of a chaotic, primeval evil into the material world. It is a masterclass in atmospheric horror, scored and shot with nightmarish precision.

Episode's cliffhanger in 2014 caused frustration, exacerbated by a two-week hiatus for the Super Bowl. It left the question whether promised explosive action”would be justified. History, of course, has answered that question resoundingly. The tension built here pays off in the ferocious climax of the following episode. However, his central critique stands: The Locked Room is an episode of immense promise and occasional frustration. It showcases the series’ unparalleled strengths—its philosophical heft, its atmospheric dread, its lead performances—while also exposing the potential pitfalls of its insular focus. The line between deep character study and soap opera is a fine one, and here, True Detective occasionally treads dangerously close to it. It remains a compelling, essential piece of the season’s mosaic, but one that shines a light on the very conceptual risks that make the show so fascinating to analyse and, at times, to criticise.

Hello my dear friends of The Anime Realm, in my previous post I talked a little about what I thought of the first season of Devil May Cry. Today I'm here to talk about my experience watching the second season of this fabulous series. It is, and will continue to be, one of my favorites, even though most of the reviews I've read online unnecessarily criticize certain aspects of this season.

Hoy vengo a hablarles ahora de lo que fue la experiencia de ver la segunda temporada de esta fabulosa serie. Claro que es una y seguirá siendo una de mis favoritas a pesar de que la mayoría de las reseñas que he leído en internet critiquen ciertos aspectos de esta entrega de manera innecesaria.

In other words, there were a few users on other websites who criticized the second season, especially its structure and plot, as if it didn't make sense. The aesthetic and visual aspects of the characters weren't well-received either, because they combined CGI with a more polished character design. But honestly, for me, this is irrelevant. Es decir, hubo unos cuantos usuarios de otras páginas web donde criticaban la segunda temporada, sobre todo la estructura y la trama en sí de esta segunda parte, como si no tuviera sentido y la parte estética y visual de los personajes tampoco gustó porque combinaron CGI con un diseño más prolijo de este personaje, pero la verdad es que para mí esto no tiene importancia. La trama de la serie empieza con muy buen pie y no noté para nada estos detalles que algunos amantes del cine critican.

If you didn't like this second season and you have your reasons, I respect your opinion, but in this post, I'm going to talk about everything I liked about this second part since I'm a big fan of Dante and his story, and seeing his brother reappear after so many years of being missing, adding some melancholic drama to the story, was fantastic. I also really enjoyed the touch of romance between Lady (Mary) and Dante, taking their relationship to another level, even with its stumbles along the way.

Si a ti no te gustó esta segunda temporada y tienes tus razones, te respetaré tu opinión, pero en este post vengo a hablar de todo lo que me agradó de esta segunda parte ya que soy muy fan de Dante y su historia y ver a su hermano entrando en escena luego de tantos años desaparecido, para agregarle algo de drama melancólico a la historia, me resultó demasiado bueno. También el toque de romance entre Lady (Mary) y Dante, llevando su relación a otro nivel, dando traspiés en el camino, me gustó mucho.

The visual effects and character design seemed to be done better, more polished, and with a better finish. Dante's personality continues to be a talking point this season; he definitely had his comedic moments in the series, which added an unexpected extra touch to the story. As always, his Jackpot couldn't be missing, and he always delivers it at the most unexpected moment. Scenes like this will make you laugh out loud, or at least they did for me, and they put me in a great mood.

Los efectos visuales y el diseño de los personajes me parece que fueron hechos de mejor manera, más prolijos y con mejor acabado. La personalidad de Dante sigue dando de qué hablar en esta temporada, definitivamente tuvo sus momentos de humor en la serie, lo que le dio un toque extra a la historia de manera inesperada. Como siempre, su Jackspot no podía faltar y en el momento menos esperado es que lo diga. Este tipo de escenas así, te robará una carcajada o al menos a mí me la robó y me hizo sentir de muy buen humor.

La música sigue formando parte esencial de ciertos momentos, las escenas fuertes de peleas, los momentos románticos, todo está ajustado como debería ser a la música que suena de fondo que en esta ocasión no dudaron en volver a agregar buena música de los años 2000 como Skater Boy de Avril Lavigne o My Immortal de Evanescence. Temas icónicos que marcaron una época inolvidable en la industria musical como lo hizo la serie en su momento cuando inició toda la historia.

What I enjoyed most about the entire series, besides the details I mentioned, were the fight scenes between these twin brothers. Vergil plays a significant role throughout the story, and seeing him with a certain resemblance to his brother in personality makes him steal every scene with his stoicism and lethality. These brothers definitely have style, not only when it comes to killing demons or people, but also when it comes to fighting each other. I really enjoyed learning more about their past and what truly happened between them when they were just children. These brothers are two sides of the same coin, and both have been manipulated by greater forces, but I'm sure that together they can restore balance between their two worlds.

Lo que más me gustó de toda la serie en sí, además de los detalles que les mencioné, fueron las escenas de peleas entre estos dos hermanos gemelos. Además, Vergil juega un papel importante en toda la historia y verlo con cierta semejanza en personalidad a su hermano se roba cada escena con su estoicismo y letalidad. Definitivamente estos hermanos tienen estilo no sólo para matar demonios o personas sino para pelear entre ellos. Me agradó mucho conocer un poco más del pasado de ambos y saber lo que sucedió realmente entre ellos cuando eran apenas unos niños. Estos hermanos son caras opuestas de la misma moneda y ambos han sido utilizados por fuerzas mayores, pero estoy seguro de que entre los dos podrán establecer el equilibrio entre ambos mundos.
