Film Review: Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)@drax107d
Early 21st century witnessed a seismic shift in Hollywood’s approach to children’s literature, largely driven by the monumental success of the Harry Potter film series. This cinematic triumph convinced studio executives that popular children's book series represented a new goldmine to be exploited. Consequently, a plethora of similar projects were launched at the start of the new millennium, ranging from instantaneous blockbusters to middling failures. Among this crowded field, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004), directed by Brad Silberling, stands out as one of the more interesting, albeit not commercially successful, attempts. While it failed to achieve the massive box office returns of its fantasy counterparts, it is a distinctive entry in the canon of children’s cinema, offering a darkly stylised alternative to the brighter horizons of Hogwarts.
The film is adapted from the cycle of thirteen children's novels written by American author Daniel Handler (who writes under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket), which were published from 1999 to 2006. The screenplay by Robert Gordon condenses the plot into an adaptation of the first three books of the cycle: The Bad Beginning, The Reptile House, and The Wide Window. The film introduces the children’s world through the perspective of the titular narrator, Lemony Snicket (voiced by Jude Law). Snicket is established not merely as a storyteller, but as an investigator and writer who guides the audience through the tragedy befalling the Baudelaire orphans.
The protagonists are the three Baudelaire children - Violet (Emily Browning), the 14-year-old eldest, a brilliant inventor who ties her hair up when she needs to think; Klaus (Liam Aiken), the 12-year-old bibliophile with a vast knowledge of obscure facts and a penchant for quoting literature and the youngest sibling, Sunny (played by twins Kara and Shelby Hoffman), is an infant whose vocabulary consists primarily of biting and single words. The plot trajectory is one of relentless misfortune. It begins when Violet and Klaus receive the devastating news that their parents have perished in a fire. Their family banker, Mr. Poe (Timothy Spall), while settling the family affairs, places all three siblings in the care of their distant relative, Count Olaf.
Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), is revealed to be a nefarious stage actor intent on getting his hands on the Baudelaire fortune, which is supposed to be inherited by Violet when she reaches eighteen years of age. Olaf treats the children with cruelty, ranging from demeaning chores to attempted murder; he famously tries to kill them by locking them in a car on a train track. The children manage to escape, and Mr. Poe, shaken by the attempt on their lives, removes Olaf's custody. He subsequently places the Baudelaires in the care of Dr. Montgomery "Uncle Monty" Montgomery (Billy Connolly), an eccentric herpetologist. However, Olaf resurfaces, disguising himself as Monty's assistant, "Stefano," and ensures Monty's demise. The Baudelaires are finally put in the care of their eccentric hermit Aunt Josephine (Meryl Streep), a woman terrified of water and obsessed with grammar. Olaf returns once more, this time disguising himself as "Captain Sham," a shallow man who marries Josephine off to him. After Josephine is pushed from a boat by Olaf, the children find themselves under his thumb once more, leading to the final act where Olaf stages a play to force Violet into a marriage she cannot legally sign.
The production history of the film is as unfortunate as the plot itself. Producer Scott Rudin and original director Barry Sonnenfeld abandoned the project over a budget dispute with Paramount Pictures. Sonnenfeld was arguably the right director for this material, given his previous work on The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, which possessed a similar blend of dark humour and gothic whimsy. Despite the change in leadership, Brad Silberling—who came in as a replacement—managed to do a solid job. His primary hurdle was making A Series of Unfortunate Events distinguishable from the Harry Potter films, a task he achieved through a concerted effort to provide the film with a much darker tone and a specific genre combination that mixes children's fiction with murder mystery, Gothic fiction, and dark comedy.
This differentiation was achieved not only through tone but through a distinct visual style. The film was entirely made in studios, utilising CGI, matte paintings, and intricate set designs to create a dark, almost monochromatic world. This aesthetic could have been England or America, or it could belong to our times or distant past; in any case, the result is a surreal atmosphere and a memorable visual look that sets it apart from its contemporaries. The film also benefits immensely from Jim Carrey, who takes the role of villain with gusto, playing not one but three different versions of the same character. The rest of the cast is equally good, including an almost unrecognisable Timothy Spall as Mr. Poe and Meryl Streep, who plays what is in essence a side character with great comedic timing. Emily Browning, the young Australian actress who plays Violet, handles her role with composure, and it is unsurprising that she maintained her career in subsequent years, just as Liam Aiken, who played her brother, did.
The result is a surreal but entertaining adventure that could be pleasing both for younger and more discerning adult viewers. However, it suffers a lot from the ending, which is deliberately left without proper closure in order to leave room for new sequels. The script sets up a clear trajectory for the orphans' misfortune, culminating in a cliffhanger that teases further adventures. Unfortunately, those sequels were never made because the film failed to have the box office impact that would be too convincing for Paramount executives. As time went by, the child actors grew out of their characters, making sequels impractical. Instead, the story of the Baudelaire orphans was eventually adapted into a television series by Netflix, originally streamed between 2017 and 2019, serving as the definitive conclusion to the saga that the 2004 film only teased.
›Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]@nattosenpai158d
Hello, fans of gothic cinema. This time we continue with more comedy films, but with a slightly different tone than what I've brought you before. This is a film that caused quite a stir, especially because of its performances and its similarities and differences with the original work. Based on the children's novel series A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket (pseudonym of Daniel Handler), this film adaptation was directed by Brad Silberling. It stars Jim Carrey, Liam Aiken, Emily Browning, Timothy Spall, Catherine O'Hara, among others. I invite you to discover this dark yet entertaining film.

The film begins with what appears to be a colorful musical introduction featuring a landscape full of animals and a smiling little elf coming out of his tree house. However, the scene stops seconds later so that our monologue, presented as Lemony Snicket, can tell us about a children's story that is very different from what we commonly see today. He begins to tell us the tragic story of the Baudelaire family, which consists of three siblings: 14-year-old Violet, a talented inventor; 13-year-old Klaus, a bookworm; and little Sunny, who likes to bite things. Soon, the siblings receive the sad news that their parents have died in an unexpected fire at their own home.

Trama
If we're talking about movies that divided audiences, then the film I'm bringing you today is perfect for the occasion. Whether it was because of Jim Carrey's performance or because it was a film adaptation of a series of gothic novels for children, this movie was the talk of the town at the time. And it's no surprise when you see our famous and charismatic actor playing such a dark and multifaceted role as Count Olaf in this film. Personally, as I am completely ignorant about the original novels on which it is based, I will just give you my honest and innocent opinion about this gothic and strange film.
I remember it being one of the movies that was most often shown on cable television when I was a child. The first thing that caught my attention was Jim Carrey's performance, and rightly so, as he was one of my favorite actors even back then. Another detail that caught my attention about this film was its gothic tone with historical elements from the Victorian era. Since then, I have also been a big fan of gothic films, especially those made by Tim Burton (to whom I will also dedicate a special feature right after finishing this one on comedy). As I was a child at the time, I had no idea how dark and macabre the story was, until now.

After the sad news of their parents' death, the Baudelaire siblings are sent to their new home where a supposed distant relative will take them in. This relative is Count Olaf, a supposed theater actor who is only interested in the large fortune Violet will receive from her deceased parents when she comes of age. From his macabre and neglected house to his own way of dressing and grooming, he exudes a sense of rejection and mistrust, but worst of all is the way the Count treats the Baudelaire siblings with contempt and mockery. While they spend their days cleaning and cooking, the Count is plotting a way to eliminate them once he receives full custody.
From the beginning, the film shows us an interesting mix of drama and mystery and a type of comedy that is very different from what we are used to talking about here. We won't see jokes or absurd moments, only dark humor that leans more toward the gothic than anything else. The sarcasm, the way the characters act, and even the way they speak and behave in this film is what generates that feeling of laughter and discomfort amid so many unfortunate moments experienced by our protagonists. Despite its macabre tone with themes such as death and all that, the film never ceases to entertain us with its unique and striking style.
Obviously, this isn't a film that everyone will enjoy watching, as the gothic humor used in this film may not be to everyone's liking. But with Jim Carrey on screen, it's impossible to ignore this story due to this great actor's talent for making us laugh with any of his performances. On this occasion, the character he plays here is nothing like the ones we have seen in the previous films I have brought you. Here he plays an antagonist, as well as being a count with bad taste in fashion, a clumsy criminal, and a very poor actor.
I don't know what the character is like in the original novel, but this is how Jim Carrey presents him to us in this film. While what he does and how he acts is naturally funny, this does not detract from his role as the main villain. We see that Count Olaf is a proud, contemptuous, and prejudiced person at first, but over time we discover that he is very elusive, manipulative, and even cunning, able to deceive others with his disguises and almost always get away with it. Worst of all, in the end we discover that he is even a serial killer with a crazy face and a complete street pyromaniac.
From the outset, it is evident that this character is the first to catch my attention thanks to Jim Carrey's performance. However, for a villain, I don't think he's as bad as many people make him out to be. Mind you, I say this thinking that it is a gothic comedy film based on a children's novel. From the outset, I don't expect much in terms of the story or the characters. But that doesn't take away from the fact that everyone's performance is very good for what we see in the film from start to finish. The mixture of tragic events with strange and even striking characters creates that sense of discomfort and humor that it seems to seek from the outset.
Of course, the film has its flaws, as expected. Especially when trying to find logic or meaning in everything we see from the beginning, it's better not to use your head too much when watching it, to be honest. There are also the other secondary characters and how completely idiotic they look in many scenes. Especially when unfortunate events occur, it's as if their intelligence completely escapes them when they ignore such obvious things. But hey, I guess all this is also part of the ironic and sarcastic humor of the film. This film definitely makes you hate all kinds of people.
On the other hand, as for the main characters, those who play the Baudelaire siblings don't do a bad job either. They manage to surprise us with ideas and methods to get rid of some of the dirty tricks that Count Olaf puts in their way. Although, considering everything they went through from the beginning, I'm very surprised that at no point do we see them crying or getting sad or anything like that. Sure, they almost always have a dull look in their eyes, but I guess this is just another detail that helps complete the gothic atmosphere of the film. Anyway, for a mystery and drama film with gothic humor, it's not bad at all.
Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this film. Given its very striking gothic style, I was surprised to learn that it wasn't directed by the famous Tim Burton, who is an expert in these things. But hey, the director in charge of this film didn't do a bad job after all. From its photography style, fixed shots, mix of Victorian era elements, dark color palette, basic visual effects, and computer-generated effects. There are also well-added sound effects and, not to mention, an excellent soundtrack. Anyway, here's this gothic film starring Jim Carrey, in case you're interested in watching it.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the gothic comedy, drama, and mystery genres.

›A Series of Unfortunate Events /Les Désastreuses Aventures des Orphelins Baudelaire (Seasons /Saisons 1 -> 3 : complete /complète)@florenceboens238d
Hello, film lovers! /Bonjour les cinéphiles,
This American series, consisting of three seasons, is available on Netflix.
It is an adaptation of the 13-volume literary series of the same name, written by Daniel Handler under his pseudonym Lemony Snicket.
This series falls into the adventure category.
One cloudy morning, the Baudelaires' parents send their three children to the beach. Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes) and Prunille (Presley Smith) skip stones to pass the time.
At the end of the morning, Mr Poe, a banker, arrives to tell them that their house has burned down and their parents have died. He is responsible for taking them to a guardian, a close family member, who will look after them until Violet comes of age, at which point they will gain access to the Baudelaire family fortune.
These three children have sometimes unexpected talents that will enable them to extricate themselves from some rather incredible situations. Their fortune attracts envy, which will lead to famous pursuits by ‘predators’ who will stop at nothing to obtain this holy grail.
The orphans will make enemies, but also friends. They will cross paths with other orphans whose stories are linked to their own.

Some events were far-fetched, such as DIY solutions to save them from a situation, where the necessary ingredients happened to be on hand, even though they wouldn't normally be there.
All in all, it wasn't too bad. It has the merit of being original, and the theme tune sticks in your head.
This series dates from 2017 to 2019, so you may have already seen it. If so, what did you think of it?
Enjoy your evening's viewing, everyone!

I used Deepl Translator to translate French into English
It has been a good while since the last time I saw a Spanish comedy, I think the last memorable one I saw was Toc Toc. Unfortunate Stories is a movie with 4 short stories that happen in the same city and are slightly related to each other. As the name implies, the stories have a lot of misfortune and tragic events for the people involved and are a perfect example of black comedy done right.
There are a lot of twists and surprises, with a bunch of moments that will make most people laugh. I don't even remember the last time I saw a good black comedy film so this was a great surprise to see Amazon releasing this flick. I didn't know anything about this production until it released.
The film begins with the story of an adult man who is the son of a very successful man. It is the old man's birthday and he is retiring so there is a big party and the son has a nice surprise for his dad. The old man, however, is known for being grumpy.
The next story is about a very meticulous man who just wants to go to the beach in front of his hotel and enjoy the sunrise. However, new events constantly happen time and time again that will make this apparently easy morning plan an impossible one.
Next, we have the story of a lonely woman in her 40s or 50s who is almost always in a very bad mood and tends to take advantage of everyone who gets near her, and then she meets an innocent and gentle African immigrant with a pure heart who works as a gardener. Both of their lives will change forever.
The last story is about a crazy company called "The Excuse" that create fake and believable stories for its clients so they can get away with their lies. They are extremely talented and can forge anything required to make a lie seems like truth.
The 4 stories are related but they can also work as independent stories. They all use a good dose of black comedy and even though some of the characters might be despiteful the situations will be funny for the most part. If you enjoy the comedy genre, especially black comedy then you should certainly watch this film.
The best
Excellent black comedy that will make most people laugh.
›A serie of unfortunate events (Review)@joseda322693d
Hello Steemit people, not long ago I finished a series called A series of unfortunate events, yes, the title of this series is something unusual, but it is not the first time it appears on screen, in 2004 it premiere its movie but to continue telling the story Netflix decided to help finish it through a television series, but enough to give details, let's start talking about this wonderful series.
Klaus, Violet and Sunny Baudelaire are three brothers who decide to go to a beach on a bad weather day, so they can have the beach for themselves and try their inventions, Klaus is a child who loves reading, deciphering codes is about him, Violet is a born inventor, can create any artifact with little material and the little baby Sunny Baudelaire, has sharp teeth that can be used to mold hard things, such as stones, steel, etc. Although her fascination is to be a chef.
When they test their invention on the beach, a person comes around making a lot of noise with his cough, the children are alarmed and when you are closer you can see that it is the Mr Poe, a banker who brings them very bad news, their parents have died in a fire. The Baudelaire must now live with a guardian until Violet who is the oldest, is of legal age to inherit the fortune left by their parents, but not everything ends there, their first tutor, the Count Olaf , he only wants their fortune, making the lives of the miserable children to have the fortune of the Baudelaire, no matter where the children go After them a series of unfortunate events follows.
Violet : The oldest Baudelaire , having the intelligence of her parents, can invent anything in a matter of seconds, she is skilled with machines and tools, her inventions they have helped Baudelaire to get out of trouble on more than one occasion.
Klaus: The male of the brothers, loves to read and can decipher codes hidden in poems and others, has a great knowledge of various things, is a walking library.
Sunny: The little one of the brothers, has sharp teeth that allows her to eat anything and mold anything at her mercy, that her size does not deceive you, this baby is a genius, when her older brothers can not see the way, Sunny shows them what they do not see, is an excellent chef and someone who is not afraid to take risks.
Mr Poe: A banker who was chosen to help orphans get a good tutor, his wife works in the Daily Punctilio, a famous newspaper from around the world, wants It is best for children, although sometimes it is very blind to see what choice he take and his wife just looks for a good sad story to put in her newspaper.
Count Olaf: This character not only appeared out of nowhere to steal the fortune of the Baudelaire, he knew their parents and many more secrets that children do not know, with his band criminals, they persecute the Baudelaire until they get their fortune, doing whatever it takes to get it.
A series of unfortunate events is undoubtedly an excellent series, do not be fooled by its main story, this story contains many secrets, mysteries, interesting characters, the scenes in each episode are fabulous, the colors used in the shots, as out of nowhere they have dark colors and dazzling colors come out. Not only the scenarios and the story are good, their cast is also good, using well-known actors to play the characters, the songs in the series were made just for the same and the main song changes in each episode to tell the story of the Baudelaire.
Great scenarios, good actors, excellent original music, a story that makes you more and more impatient, fall in love with this series and if you ask me, my favorite character is Sunny Baudelaire, if you want to know why, Just look at the series and you will see how that adorable baby steals your heart.
Sometimes I despaired as adults were so blind to help children, but that's just to give history to the series and it's also a way for parents to see how They see themselves when they ignore their children, nothing to complain about in this series.
Without more to say, I hope you liked it, we read soon, either with a review of a series, movie, anime, some musical recommendation, my section of the Encyclopedia of the Hero and the Villain and from time to time my writings that I hope Enjoy, if you want to see more, well just ...

›A Series Of Unfortunate Events - Season 2 | Official Teaser [HD] | Netflix@movietrailers3058d
More isn't always better. Sometimes it's much worse. March 30th, get ready for more villains, more schemes, more peril, more orphans and more intentional fires.
It's really going to be quite dreadful. We can't wait.

Lemony Snicket's harsh tale of torture for the three children Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire is taken to a more artistic approach in Netflix's most recent adaptation of the famous A Series Tale of Unfortunate Events.
Following the same narrative as the original story, each episode focuses on a different plot of Count Olaf's, and the children's attempts to use their wits to escape him, despite the sheer ignorance of the adults that surround them. It's annoying to witness such ignorance, but it's nice to see the children maintain their independence via their own individual skills: Violet is a fast thinker, and a builder. Klaus is filled with knowledge through his interest in books. Sunny has an interest in biting things, making her teeth often a god substitute for scissors.
Despite his evilness, Count Olaf is a great means of comic relief in the show, and the great performance by Neil Patrick Harris makes him a fun character to watch, especially with his universal acting skills--in regards to both the character Count Olaf and Neil Patrick Harris--throughout his various attempts to essentially make his way into every person's house in a Trojan horse manner.
Towards the end, the show does get a little strange, and I honestly cannot remember whether the unfortunate events were genuinely a series in the previous works and iterations of the story. It seems like an attempt to try something new, while also maintains pacing; the fact that there is a second season coming has me wondering just how many new things will be added to the show, and I'm okay with that overall. The base story is there, and that alone is told in an enjoyable fashion. A few innovations and replacements will breathe new air into an already well-known story.
It's worth watching, for sure, providing you aren't easily annoyed by dumb characters and their blatant errorous ways. It did take me a while to give it a second chance, given my first attempt to watch it just didn't catch with me. At almost an hour per episode, it's much better than the movies.
›Lemony Snicket's a series of unfortunate events (Review#6)@filotasriza33414d
Hello guys how are you?
Today I will review something different not again marvel and dc series (but soon enough ;) )
It’s time for the awesome Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events review
Lemony Snicket’s show follows the three Baudelaire children and the adventures as well as the hardships they gone through. They lived a happy wealthy live with their parents when a sudden and mysterious fire kills them and destroy their home. After the tragedy happens the children have to move to foster families or close relatives as the law suggests. Well, it’s not that simple as count Olaf a failed stage actor and a cousin of their parent shows up in order to take the kids into custody.
So far so good ha?
Well actually no, cause count’s Olaf inner motive is to obtain the kid’s massive fortune before they became adults and claim it!
That show first aired in 2004 as a movie and as count Olaf was none other than I can say my COMEDY GOD JIMM CARREY
YES JIMM CARREY
The movie overall was pretty good but they couldn’t summarize the books that the story was written in without leave a lot of things out but if you have seen the movie it’s pretty much the same things happening but with more details, backstories and fun. The movie nominated over 25 times and won about 9 awards and 1 Oscar.
Both the movie and series is a type of adventure and comedy with mystery and drama in it. From now on I will only talk about the 2017 Netflix series that has for now 1 season and 8 episodes!
Now in the show the role of Count Olaf has another comedy actor I like and is….. Wait for it………… wait a little more………………………. Oh yes you know by now it is the amazing chameleon Neil Patrick Harris!
The first episode starts with Lemony Snicket (played by Patrick Warburton) as the writer who addresses to us and say:
‘’ I would advise all our viewers to turn away immediately and watch something more pleasant instead ‘’ or in other episodes ‘’ if you are interested in stories with happy endings, then you’d be better off somewhere else’’
This is something that happens a couple of times in random moments, a common trick to make us want to see it through the end and it fit perfectly in the show.
The whole set is different than most of the movies as it is like it popped out from the book with amazing cities, buildings, characters outfits and a whole steampunk dark-black humor atmosphere.
Get ready to witness a couple of different characters with a lot of different personalities and an evil count Olaf that does anything in his power to make the fortune his and when I say anything I mean it as he changes many outfits and plays many different roles in a very funny way!
March through the kids story and see how they suffer and at the same time try to find what really happened behind the so called ‘’accident’’ and fire!
Another interesting thing I want to share with you about the kids is that each one has a special skill:
Violet Baudelaire
She is 14 years old and the eldest one and her special skill is that she is an intelligent inventor!
Klaus Baudelaire
He is the second one and the only boy in family. His skill is that he has a photographic memory and he really good at researching things
Sunny Baudelaire
She is a baby that speaks in her own baby language that their siblings understand :P .Her special skill is that she has some very sharp teeth that can destroy a couple of things!
Fun fact: Violet Baudelaire both in the 2004 movie and 2014 show look alike
I suggest checking this series out if you like that environment and atmosphere it provides. I can guarantee that if you like those kinds of shows and books you have to see this! It’s really funny, funnier than the movie (although I didn’t expect Neil to be that good cause Jim Carrey just raised the bar too damn high) but as I said it surprised me in a good way. I sometimes found myself laughing without even noticing it :P
If you want i can make another section of posts that review each season of a show, if you want that let me know. Every show i review i 100% watch or watched it. Be free to comment me everything you want to know or to say
