Anatomy of a Scandal is a brand new limited series on Netflix that has been quite hyped all across the globe. I have read quite a lot of reviews, and most of them deem Anatomy of a Scandal to be quite average. But, I don't always agree with the critics. Do I agree with them about Anatomy of a Scandal?
What is Anatomy of a Scandal about?
We meet a minister in the UK who has a beautiful wife and two children. But, things are not as easy as they might sound, as it suddenly comes forth that he has had a sexual relationship to one of his co-workers for 5 months. SO far, this is only causing trouble for their marriage.
But, after the minister broke up with his co-worker, he once again had sex with the co-worker. The only problem is that, according to the woman, she was raped, while the politician claims it to be have been the desire of both to have sex.
This is real MeToo problematic, and of course, it is up to anyone watching to decide what really happened. Of course, we are served a way to look upon all of it in the series. But, how will the case influence the family, the marriage, the British parliament and the fellow politicians, and so much more?
Is Anatomy of a Scandal worth watching?
I have been watching quite a lot of limited series on Netflix recently, and I have got to admit... this was quite boring. I watched all six episodes, but it wasn't like I really looked forward to watching them. I looked forward to the final episode, because it would give closure, but that was the only reason.
Even so, I told my wife a few episodes before the end what I think would become the end of the story, and I was quite bored to discover that I was entirely right. In other words, quite predictable!
Of course, there are some surprising twists and turns in Anatomy of a Scandal, but they are not at all enough to make this very interesting.
Now I am happy to be finished with Anatomy of a Scandal, and instead, I look forward to stream the brand new Harlan Coben series Hold Tight on Netflix. It has been produced in Poland with local actors and actresses from Poland (as far as I can see), but that just makes it all the more interesting! Have you seen Hold Tight yet? Las noticias recientes de que Netflix está perdiendo suscriptores no es porque hayan aumentado sus tarifas ni nada por el estilo, es porque el contenido que están ofreciendo es mediocre, se preocupan más por el volumen que por la calidad. Pero eso no quita que de vez en cuando destaque alguna producción entre el mar de contenido que en la plataforma existe y el ejemplo de lo que les hablo es esta miniserie recién estrenada que para serles sincero me sorprendió bastante.
The recent news that Netflix is losing subscribers is not because they have increased their rates or anything like that, it is because the content they are offering is mediocre, they care more about volume than quality. But that does not mean that from time to time some production stands out among the sea of content that exists on the platform and the example of what I'm talking about is this recently released miniseries that to be honest I was quite surprised.
Después de haber visto esta miniserie quiero pensar que Netflix no está tan perdida como algunos sugieren ya que la disfruté mucho por lo bien producida que está, de hecho ese fue uno de los puntos que más me llamó la atención, la forma impecable con la que fue hecha a pesar de que solo es una miniserie de seis capítulos. Es tan así que en principio y con la premisa de la historia, lamentablemente muy conocida hoy en día, pareciera que no fuera a dar mucho y se quedara en una producción plana y aburrida pero la verdad es que fue todo lo contrario, algo muy grato de ver. Hablemos entonces un poco de que va esto...
After watching this miniseries I want to think that Netflix is not as lost as some suggest since I enjoyed it a lot because of how well produced it is, in fact that was one of the points that caught my attention, the impeccable way it was made even though it is only a six-episode miniseries. So much so that in principle and with the premise of the story, unfortunately very well known today, it seemed that it would not give much and would remain a flat and boring production but the truth is that it was quite the opposite, something very pleasant to watch. So let's talk a little bit about what this is all about...
Basicamente esta es la historia de James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend), un político altamente relacionado con el Primer ministro británico y perteneciente a las clases más altas de dicho país, el cual es acusado de cometer actos sexuales sin consentimiento, es decir, violación. Inevitablemente entre esa tormenta queda atrapada su esposa Sophie Whitehouse (Sienna Miller) quien en todo momento será el apoyo de James y quien velará por la presunta inocencia de su esposo.
Basically this is the story of James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend), a politician highly related to the British Prime Minister and belonging to the highest classes of the country, who is accused of committing sexual acts without consent, ie rape. Inevitably trapped in this storm is his wife Sophie Whitehouse (Sienna Miller) who at all times will be James' support and who will watch over her husband's presumed innocence.
Por otro lado tenemos a Kate Woodcroft (Michelle Dockery), una prestigiosa fiscal y abogada que será la encargada de poner a James tras las rejas por los actos que este cometió. Lo particular es que ella está viviendo este caso de una manera muy personal ya que está cien por ciento convencida de la culpabilidad de Whitehouse y utilizará toda su ambición para convencer a todos de su verdad. Al final lo que se vive son las dos caras de la moneda del juicio mientras nos van reconstruyendo los hechos en una producción que repito, es increíble.
On the other hand we have Kate Woodcroft (Michelle Dockery), a prestigious prosecutor and lawyer who will be in charge of putting James behind bars for the acts he committed. The particular thing is that she is living this case in a very personal way since she is one hundred percent convinced of Whitehouse's guilt and will use all her ambition to convince everyone of her truth. In the end, what we experience are the two sides of the coin of the trial while the facts are reconstructed in a production that, I repeat, is incredible.
Hay algo que en las pocas líneas que llevo he dicho más incesantemente y es la forma en la que fue hecha esta miniserie. Y lo digo porque pienso que es su punto fuerte, no el caso como tal o la trama que también tiene sus "plot twist" bastantes interesantes, es la forma en como a través de flashbacks nos van mostrando la historia y los hechos más relevantes en lo que al final es un viaje entre el presente y el pasado digno de una película ya sea de suspenso o de investigación. Una genialidad si me lo preguntan.
There is something that in the few lines that I have said more incessantly and it is the way in which this miniseries was made. And I say this because I think it is its strong point, not the case as such or the plot that also has its "plot twist" interesting enough, is the way in which through flashbacks are showing us the story and the most relevant facts in what in the end is a journey between the present and the past worthy of a movie either thriller or investigation. A stroke of genius if you ask me.
Cuando nos sentamos y comenzamos a ver el desarrollo de esta serie rápidamente nos daremos cuenta de lo que anteriormente les dije, había ocasiones en las que no sabía que estaba viendo, si un thriller psicológico o algún film en donde un asesino serial anduviera suelto y todo el mundo corriera peligro, que en este caso "todo el mundo" vendrían siendo las mujeres. Muy impresionante como a partir de una historia si se quiere decir "cliché" porque como esto hay miles de cosas por ahí, se logró algo a mi manera de ver innovador y que de verdad atrapa al espectador.
When we sit down and start watching the development of this series we will quickly realize what I said before, there were times when I did not know what I was watching, if a psychological thriller or a film where a serial killer was on the loose and everyone was in danger, which in this case "everyone" would be women. Very impressive as from a story if you want to say "cliché" because there are thousands of things like this out there, it was achieved something in my opinion innovative and really catches the viewer.
La intriga, el drama inminente, la tensión por querer descubrir quien tiene la razón y quien es dueño de la verdad y la forma en como los personajes lidian con todas las emociones que hay en el ambiente son algunas de las cosas o ingredientes que hacen de esta miniserie de lo mejorcito que ha sacado Netflix en lo que va de año. Porque si, el nivel de emociones que verán acá es grande por claramente todas las situaciones que ocurren, desde las mismas presuntas violaciones hasta homicidios.
The intrigue, the impending drama, the tension of wanting to find out who is right and who owns the truth and the way the characters deal with all the emotions in the environment are some of the things or ingredients that make this miniseries one of the best Netflix has released so far this year. Because yes, the level of emotions that you will see here is great for clearly all the situations that occur, from the same alleged rapes to homicides.
Viendo esta serie también me deja algo claro y es la capacidad que tiene el ser humano para mentir y convencerse de que esa mentira es su realidad. Ya sea que lo hagas por que está en tu personalidad y casi que es innato en ti o porque por razones de fuerza mayor tengas que verte obligado a creerte algo que no eres. La forma en como muestran esos aspectos, a mi forma de ver bastante perturbadores de las personas, es otro de los atractivos, si cabe esa palabra, de esta historia. Honestamente se van a sorprender porque no es exageración nada de lo que les estoy comentando, vale mucho la pena verla.
Watching this series also makes something clear to me and that is the capacity that human beings have to lie and convince themselves that this lie is their reality. Whether you do it because it is in your personality and it is almost innate in you or because for reasons of force majeure you have to be forced to believe something you are not. The way they show those aspects, in my opinion quite disturbing aspects of people, is another of the attractions, if that word fits, of this story. Honestly, you will be surprised because none of what I am telling you is an exaggeration, it is well worth watching.
Siempre hablo de los personajes pero en esta oportunidad tengo que decir que todos estuvieron a la altura. James porque es la típica persona que siempre cree que se va a salir con la suya y se considera intocable por todos los privilegios que tuvo y tiene, la forma en como por medio de su personalidad logra gestionar y hacer creer a todos su inocencia es algo muy audaz y que da miedo a la vez. Sophie, su esposa, es la mujer que siempre está bajo la sombre de su esposo hasta que decide que no es así. Tiene más fuerza y voluntad de la que muchos pueden pensar, ojo con ese personaje.
I always talk about the characters but this time I have to say that all of them were up to the task. James because he is the typical person who always thinks he is going to get away with it and considers himself untouchable because of all the privileges he had and has, the way in which through his personality he manages to manage and make everyone believe his innocence is something very bold and scary at the same time. Sophie, his wife, is the woman who is always under her husband's shadow until she decides otherwise. She has more strength and will than many may think, watch out for that character.
Y finalmente Kate, la fiscal, creo que para mi es el mejor personaje de esta miniserie porque es uno muy interesante y que tiene muchas sorpresas que las irán descubriendo con el pasar de los episodios. Una mujer dura, de altas convicciones, educada, capaz y como dije ya, ambiciosa pero con un pasado rudo que lleva sobre sus hombros lo que la convierte en alguien más fuerte aún. Ojo también con ella.
And finally Kate, the prosecutor, I think for me is the best character of this miniseries because she is very interesting and has many surprises that you will discover as the episodes go by. A tough woman, with high convictions, educated, capable and as I said before, ambitious but with a rough past that she carries on her shoulders which makes her even stronger. Watch out for her too.
Una gran miniserie y un gran drama que me atrapó de principio a fin por su manera de mostrarnos la historia, por sus escenas y sus secuencias, por la fotografía que hay en ella, por la forma en la que fue grabada y porque a pesar de ser una historia muy oscura no las pintaron como si fuera un cuento cosa que para mi fue algo que hizo que saliera de lo convencional y uno la disfrutara más.
A great miniseries and a great drama that caught me from beginning to end for the way it shows the story, for its scenes and sequences, for the photography in it, for the way it was filmed and because despite being a very dark story they didn't paint it as if it were a story, which for me was something that made it go out of the conventional and one enjoyed it more.
Le doy un 8/10, vale mucho la pena que la vean. Consta de 6 capítulos de una duración de no más de 45 minutos cada uno por lo que se ve bastante rápido. Es claro pero la pueden conseguir en Netflix. Les dejo el tráiler para que así se hagan el favor y la miren.
I give it an 8/10, it is well worth watching. It consists of 6 chapters with a length of no more than 45 minutes each so it's pretty quick to watch. It is clear but you can get it on Netflix. I leave you the trailer so you can do yourself a favor and watch it.

One thing that is common in all societies on earth and brilliantly displayed in this Netflix miniseries is that the wealthy always believe themselves to be above the law. They disobey the laws of the society and still expect the law to favour them when push comes to shove.
Anatomy Of A Scandal (2022) is a British political/legal drama that is an adaptation of a novel of the same name by Sarah Vaughan depicting scandals that have become common nowadays. The main plot is about a scandal involving a junior minister (also best friends with the prime minister) who is arrested and tried for rape. In addition to the main plot are twists involving the prosecutor who was once a victim of the junior minister's philandering ways.
Immediately this mini-series dropped on Netflix and with the superb cast like Sienna Miller, Michele Dockery, Ruper Friend and Naomi Scott, I downloaded and binge-watched it during the Easter holiday.
The series starts at the point of the scandal breaking in the papers and the junior minister running home to inform his wife of his sins. From there, all hell breaks loose. The plot begins to unfold thrillingly, filling viewers with suspense and expectations of what would follow next.
I enjoyed the political and psychological thrillers, and courtroom dramas excellently performed. There was no dull moment in every scene. The main plot unfolds piece by piece to cover the present time and flashbacks to the past leading to the twists and turns.
In examining the nature of scandals of this sort, the series focused on the elements of consent, harassment, privileges and power in both the social and political relationships. These scenes shed a light on the things that go on in the corridors of power and how society is manipulated to suit the desires of the wealthy.
The cast of this series is great and their performance was so brilliant that it seemed almost real, especially the victim of the rape, Naomi Scott. Her acting was touching and top-notch.
The only part that I have issues with is the visual effects or cinematography. I guess the creators were trying something innovative with the scene shots but it did not sit right. Some of the shots in scenes that were suspense-filled were either angled or tilted in an awkward way that could probably give viewers a headache.
Sometimes the scene would be turned upside down which is very uncomfortable to watch. I don't know who came up with this idea but it kind of killed the vibe. Though the plot is captivating, a viewer would no doubt endure the awkward scene shots just to get to the end.
Overall, I enjoyed watching this six-epidsodes series and would recommend it to all thriller lovers. It's gripping and goes to the heart of our society. I'll rate this series 3.8 stars out of 5 due to the awkward scene shots.
