  1. Black Butler: A Dance with The Demons@vickystory349d

Sometimes, the most haunting stories don’t come at you with screams—they whisper.

That’s exactly what Black Butler did to me.

It wasn’t even on my watchlist, at first. I had scrolled past it more times than I can count. A Victorian setting? A demon butler? A 12-year-old earl solving crimes? Honestly, it sounded strange… maybe too strange.

But late one night—half-restless, half-curious—I pressed play.

I didn’t know then that I was about to enter one of the most intricately woven, emotionally gutting, and philosophically dark anime journeys I’ve ever experienced.

I have always been attracted to stories that are an inch away from morality- the kind of stories that do not portray their characters as good or bad but create a grey area so that you begin to wonder about the morality of your actions yourself. Black Butler delivered on that.

And the concept of a demon butler who is obliged to be in service to a boy until he gives him his soul? That was poetic in a haunting sort of way. It was Shakespearean, it was tragic. And so I tried it out, without any hope.

Then I happened to meet Sebastian Michaelis--and everything altered.

Black Butler (or Kuroshitsuji) is a Victorian-era London tale of a young earl Ciel Phantomhive, the “Queen’s Watchdog,” and his butler Sebastian in their mission to solve crimes in the darkest recesses of the British aristocracy. Behind the bespoke suits, grand houses and posh society there is a nightmare.

Ciel was orphaned at the tender age of ten, and his parents were killed; thus, he was auctioned to become part of the worst places in the world of human depravity. Crushed and devastated in his sorrow, he makes a deal with a demon and the creature is obliged to assist him in his vengeance. His butler is Sebastian Michaelis who is that demon.

However, this is not a touching story about a boy and his protector.

Sebastian does not come to save Ciel.

    He is merely waiting.

Sebastian is not only a butler. He is a prince of grace. Rock steady, cool, unbelievably perfect. He cooks. He cleans. With frightening grace he destroys enemies. And all the time he is saying the chilling phrase:

Because it is so because I am one hell of a butler.

    And he is. Literally.

Sebastian is a flesh-eating monster. You can get it by the way he looks over Ciel with a smirk on his face. He shields the boy, yes,--but not in love. It is only due to the fact that the soul of Ciel is his reward. Ciel has a contract tattooed on his eye and once he is done with his revenge, Sebastian will consume him.

Just like a waltz between fire and ice to watch them together. Pain and power. Relying and playing games.

    And somehow it is beautiful.

Ciel is not like any other child hero I have ever watched. He is chilly. Calculating. Sometimes cruel. But how could he fail to be?

He is a boy who is participating in a deadly game for adults. His trauma is his armor because he is surrounded by aristocrats, liars, murderers, and demons. At times, as brief as they are, his mask cracks. Where thou 'tis the boy below the earl. And it is the most painful moment.

He does not shed any tears. He does not fail. He does not have the luxury of doing so in this world.

But deep inside your heart you start to think: would he not just like Sebastian to jump and embrace him as a father? Friendlike? Does he ever feel bad at calling the devil that follows him everywhere?

The irony of it is that he will never permit himself to ask

Black Butler is a gothic feast in terms of visuals. Remember dim cathedrals, the corridors that were lit by candle, the gaslight streets in the fog. The animation, particularly in subsequent arcs such as the Book of Circus and Book of the Atlantic, is crisp, stylish, atmosphere-drenched.

    What about the music? Exquisite.

The orchestra compositions are filled with grief and stress. The introductory themes cannot be forgotten (namely Monochrome no Kiss). The lighting, the costume design, everything drags you in this decadent, dangerous world.

It is not only a show. It is an atmosphere.

Does Black Butler have demons, reapers, secret societies, and grotesque villains? Yes it has. However, the fantasy is a thinly disguised exploration of some very uncomfortable themes that are way too close to home:

Trauma and survival: The narrative of Ciel is all about a child who was broken and taught to use his trauma as a weapon.

Morality and power- Is it justice to get revenge? Is Ciel a monster or a hero? Does Sebastian have any emotion-or is he just imitating humanity, in order to entertain himself?

Loneliness- The two characters despite being in constant company are completely lonely. And you can feel it between them in the silences.

It has a philosophical undertone to everything. The deeper I got into the show, the more I wondered uncomfortably about justice, childhood, loss and the price of revenge.

Black Butler did not only amuse me but also disturbed me.

It caused me to wonder what healing is all about. It left me to dwell with the bitter fact that not every victim turns out to be a saint. That not all hurts become wisdom. In some cases, they become an obsession. And what people appear the most calm? In many cases, they are the ones who are literally stitched together with the strings of pain.

I even wished that I could jump on the screen and prevent Ciel. Say, he had a right to rest. Tell him not to continue to feed the demon next to him. I did not think he would listen, though.

    And that was the worst.

And as with all of us, sometimes, we make a bargain--metaphorically--with something dark in us, in order to continue?

The character of Ciel and Sebastian made me realize that power does not always speak. Sometimes it is a boy, haunted eyes and fire through which he walks, a demon at his side.

Looking to get some action, elegance and mystery? Black Butler does not disappoint.

Want characters that will push you and relationships that cannot be defined, and a story that is both beautiful and brutal? That is your world then.

However, do not go there in search of clarity. Or resolution. Or comfort.

    Enter, anticipating to be scared.

It is because once you get inside Phantomhive Manor, you do not come out the same person.

Black Butler is a gothic tragedy wrapped in velvet and soaked in blood. It’s clever, stylish, emotional—and deeply philosophical beneath its genre trappings. It made me fall in love with flawed characters. It made me root for a demon. It made me question the definition of justice.

And even now, long after the final scene, I still hear Sebastian’s voice in my head.

    “Young master, shall we begin?”

Yes. And I’m still not ready for it to end.

Discovering an interesting anime thanks to a website dedicated to collecting anime on its servers is something I appreciate. I had never really trusted these suggestions, but what they actually do is gather news about new anime or seasons of some that have been around for a while on their home page. That's how I discovered the five seasons of

    image.png

    Kuroshitsuji

    image.png

This action, dark fantasy, and psychological thriller anime, known in English as Black Butler, introduces us to the young Earl Ciel Phantomhive, a teenager of about 13 years of age who, after being orphaned, became the head of the family and also inherited another responsibility: solving all the mysteries entrusted to him by Queen Victoria, which is why he is known as the Queen's watchdog.

    image.png

    Source

Interestingly, young Ciel has a handsome butler named Sebastian Michaelis, who is actually a demon, bound to serve him by a contract they both made, which, when it comes to an end, will allow Sebastian to obtain Ciel's soul.

This anime is inspired by a Japanese manga that was released in 2006, and two years later, in 2008, the anime began airing. As I mentioned above, in its fifth season, each episode presents the adventures of Ciel alongside Sebastian and his peculiar servants.

    image.png

    Source

In the first season, in addition to introducing us to Ciel, we see how he solves small mysteries and murders that have occurred in London, as well as introducing us to other characters, among whom one stands out with a humorous twist: a grim reaper or Shinigami named Grell Sutcliff, who is obsessed with the color red and is also in love with Sebastian.

Now, the second season touches on a rather heavy topic: pedophilia. Since it does not follow the manga, many do not consider it canon, as it presents the confrontation between Count Alois Trancy and his butler, Claude Faustus, who come into conflict with Sebastian and Ciel. The truth is that it has no direct relation to the plot of the rest of the seasons, although it does present interesting battles.

In the third season, we see the Count and Sebastian investigating the disappearances of children for the Queen, which forces them to infiltrate a circus, where they meet a group of young people surrounded by mystery who, in addition to a shared past, seem to be hiding a dark secret.

    image.png

    Source

From this season onwards, we begin to see many improvements in the anime's animation, which is delightful and allows us to admire one of the favorite characters in this anime, who is undoubtedly its co-star Sebastian, whose true appearance as a demon remains a mystery that has barely been explored to date, but as a butler he looks simply charming and attractive.

This season is followed by a two-episode OVA titled Kuroshitsuji: Book of Murder, about which I will not give many details so that you will be more curious and rush to see it. In addition, there is a movie titled Kuroshitsuji: Book of the Atlantic, which I have not seen, but which I will surely look for to enjoy after finishing this post.

Moving on to the fourth season, which is my favorite so far, Ciel and Sebastian, at the request of the Queen, infiltrate the prestigious Weston College boarding school, where only young people from distinguished families study. Their mission is to investigate the disappearance of students. Ciel's father, Vincent, studied at this boarding school.

    image.png

    Source

In this fourth season, titled Kuroshitsuji: Kishuku Gakkou-hen, a lot of exciting events take place, which help us discover the importance of someone who seems to know a lot about Ciel's family's past, who was an informant for both his father and him and pretended to be a gravedigger, whose name is Undertake.

In the most recent season, which features spectacular animation, Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian travel to Germany to investigate the mysterious deaths of men after entering a forest that is supposedly cursed and inhabited by werewolves. Here, in addition to enjoying the excellent animation, as I mentioned earlier, we get to see another piece of Ciel's past, It is revealed that he had a twin brother who was older than him and whose identity he assumed.

This anime never lets us get bored, as each season or episode presents a different mystery to solve. Throughout the series, we discover a little more about the main character, Ciel, and enjoy the efficiency and coldness of the handsome Sebastian.

    image.png

  3. Kuroshitsuji: Midori no Majo Hen@musicandreview391d

At the time of writing this, 10 chapters out of 13 of the fifth season of Kuroshitsuji have been aired, which is called “Emerald Witch Arc”, and well, as the name suggests, witchcraft is involved in the story. So far we had not seen any season of Kuroshitsuji in which witchcraft is involved, although evidently the supernatural and demonic elements have always been at the bottom of the barrel considering the nature of Sebastian Michaelis and some other characters. So, in theory, that centuries-old European practice would be a topic of conversation over the course of the season.

For those who don't know, Kuroshitsuji tells the story of Ciel Phantomhive and his butler Sebastian Michaelis, a demon who is in Ciel's service under contract. This anime is set in Victorian-era England, so dark and gloomy scenarios are normal. The aforementioned pair is dedicated to solve crimes or mysteries for the Queen, she does not hesitate to request their services for the most rare and inexplicable cases since the insight and teamwork of these two is remarkable and highly respected. This is how we see that they solve crimes of both human and supernatural nature.

    image.png

    Source

Then, in “Emerald Witch Arc”, Ciel and company travel to Germany at the request of the queen to investigate some mysterious deaths, so they arrive at a small village that seems to be a bit isolated, there they are not received in a friendly manner, the villagers seem to be superstitious and in that sense they predict that the arrival of foreigners could bring bad consequences for the village. There is talk of a werewolf that appears with some frequency and those who see it suffer a terrible death, although it is not precisely at the hands of the werewolf, but as a result of a fog that generates negative effects on health.

In that village, Ciel and the others meet Sieglinde Sullivan, a girl who serves as the green witch whose job is to protect the village from werewolves. She is a naive girl who has never left the village and whose north is to be at the service of her people, however, upon meeting the newly arrived foreigners she is curious and invites them to spend the night in her mansion, a situation that generated discomfort in her butler and the villagers.

Kuroshitsuji: Midori no Majo Hen | OFFICIAL TRAILER

After the aforementioned, the real adventure to solve the mystery begins. I was very surprised that this time Ciel and Sebastian had more difficulties than usual, to the point that Ciel was taken to the limit and was affected psychologically, but that was very interesting because we could see a dynamic between him and Sebastian that we had rarely seen, the contract between them was about to break and we know that demonic contracts will not end well if you do not comply with what has been established before. On the other hand, I liked that this season gave some development to Finnian's character, a guy who has always been nice as a secondary character, so it was great to delve a little deeper into his past and have his moments of importance to the story.

This season feels a little different from the previous ones, but it doesn't miss a beat, so far the 10 chapters have been very good and have shown us a very interesting story which had a twist in the last chapters that I didn't expect, I won't tell you what it is about so as not to give you spoilers. The animation, as usual, remains very sober, as well as the soundtrack which has never disappointed in this anime, there are many openings and endings that are now part of my playlist. The truth is that this season of Kuroshitsuji came with everything, no doubt it is being much better than the previous one and there is still the closing of the story which promises to increase the level.

    Spoilers Ahead!

I have watched this anime long ago, today we will be talking about an anime character who loves drinking tea, and it’s not that hard to mention a tea-loving anime character. Ciel from Black Butler is mostly seen with a cup of tea in his hand. He is one of the main characters in the Black Butler series. He is a seen holding beautifully designed tea cups and every time it's different.

Ciel is a child of noble birth in Victorian England; tragically, his family was killed. Later on, he was kidnapped and was sold to a cult. Furthermore, Ciel also serves the queen, and he has done many dirty works under her orders.

    credits

So, this anime has British voice actors, and it is set in the heart of London. you can say that it’s a British thing, and they do love drinking tea more than the most. When you consider all those facts, there's nothing to wonder about why Ciel loves drinking tea.

    credits

I personally don't drink tea often because it's not something that I would like to have on a daily basis, but my parents love tea; they drink it three times a day, and I don't know how they manage to do it. Also, my dad drinks tea without adding any sugar, and I can barely drink that type of tea. On the other hand, my mom drinks milk tea, and that is what I prefer most of the time. I only drink tea when I feel like it’s been a long time; otherwise, I do not like to have tea every day. I've noticed in the anime Black Butler that Ciel is crazy for tea, as he's hardly seen without a cup of tea in his hands. I don't know how he got this habit, but it's really cute to see him holding a cup of tea.

    credits

If I talk about this anime, it is too perfect because the storyline, the dialogues, the animation, and the details are very well made. What I like the most is the character Sebastian; he attracts me the most. The reason I started to watch this anime was because of his charm. He is powerful and has a darker side, and that's what I like the most. I don't wish to encounter him in real life, but he's perfect for the anime world. A character like him is enough to carry an anime, and the side characters are also good, but not as good as him.

    credits

I haven't finished all of the seasons, as I watched it long ago, but I'll continue to watch it again, and I'll let you guys stay updated about it. Also, if you have not watched this anime yet, then trust me, you're missing out on something really awesome! I can bet that anyone will love this anime; as I'm a big fan of it, you will become one of us too. I cannot wait to watch the other seasons; now I kind of feel nostalgic about it. Anyway, I would like to share a song from the anime that I liked the most, and it is none other than Black Butler: Book of circus - Opening | Enamel , I hope you will like it too.

    Thanks for reading 🌷

  5. Black Butler||More than just a dark Anime.@omokhafue522d

It's the first day of a new month and a Saturday. What other way for me to start the month than trying to restructure my life and lock in? That was the intention, that's the intention and the fire I'm trying to keep alive. I was still plotting my ways around this month when this particular anime I saw sometime last year came into my head, Black Butler. I've always seen alot of edits on Instagram about it this anime and it's been so good, especially the ones with Sebastian in it. Oh my goodnes-. It's so good,he looks so dreamy.

b169dfb65b5c73141b29137b322547f3.jpg Source When I started the anime,I wasn't hooked. It didn't grab me like I thought it would, sadly. So I had to keep it aside for a while and take it up again after a while (about 4 months later). I didn't regret it guys. Cause this time,it was hitting. It hit;)

Black Butler is also known as Kuroshitsuji. It is a Japanese manga series that's been adapted into several anime seasons, OVAs, and even a live-action film. The story takes place in Victorian-era London and follows the life of Ciel Phantomhive, a young boy who's the head of the Phantomhive household.

Ciel makes a deal with a demon named Sebastian Michaelis, who becomes his butler. The catch? Ciel's soul belongs to Sebastian once he's achieved his goal of avenging his parents' death. Sebastian is ridiculously skilled and intelligent, and he's super loyal to Ciel. As the series goes on, you realize that Sebastian's not just a simple demon - he's got his own motivations and backstory.

Throughout the series, Ciel and Sebastian navigate the complexities of high society in Victorian London. They get caught up in all sorts of mysteries and crimes, and they often work together to solve them. Along the way, they meet a bunch of other characters, including demons, reapers, and humans, each with their own agendas and motivations.

One of the main plot threads is Ciel's quest for revenge against the people who killed his parents. This takes him and Sebastian on a wild ride through the dark underbelly of London, from the streets to the aristocratic circles. They encounter all sorts of shady characters, from corrupt businessmen to supernatural entities, and they have to use all their skills and resources to stay one step ahead.

As the series goes on, Ciel's relationships with the people around him get more and more complicated. He's got friends and allies, like his fiancée Elizabeth and his friends Finny and Bardroy, but he's also struggling with his own morality and the consequences of his actions. He's walking a fine line between good and evil, and it's hard to predict what he'll do next.

ce96da6ffc42fc24f62aeb9cfbcb4df8.jpg Source Sebastian, on the other hand, is a total mystery. He's incredibly loyal to Ciel, but he's also got his own motivations and desires. As the series progresses, you start to see glimpses of Sebastian's past and his true nature, and it's fascinating. He's not just a one-dimensional demon - he's a complex, multifaceted character with his own strengths and weaknesses.

The creator, Yana Toboso, explores some pretty deep themes in Black Butler, like the nature of good and evil, the consequences of revenge, and the complexities of human relationships. The series has a great sense of humor, even though it's pretty dark at times. The characters are all well-developed and relatable, and the plot is really good and engaging. Let's not forget to add "intriguing" to the mix.

The series is set in Victorian-era London, and it's clear that Toboso did a lot of research on the time period. The attention to detail is impressive, from the costumes and settings to the historical events and figures that are referenced throughout the series.By the way,Black Butler has some hint of horror in it. It's really really good.

f645c864c2b99d356d8c2ae87815922d.jpg Source I would definitely recommend this to anyone cause it is really good. I enjoyed it and I hope you do too.

    Thanks for reading.

  6. Kuroshitsuji: Public School Arc, is the worst season so far@musicandreview760d

Since 2008 when the first season of Kuroshitsuji was aired, I have followed all the others, after the second one there was a hiatus of about 4 years and now, 10 years later, we can see the fourth season. Each season has different stories, that makes you can watch any season without decontextualizing, but obviously the first one is basic to understand the dynamic between Ciel Phamtomhive and Sebastian Michaelis. Kuroshitsuji has genres that I really like such as comedy and fantasy, but always full of darkness, the fact that it is set in the Victorian era is also an attraction since it was a time of many contrasts.

For those who do not know, Kuroshitsuji tells the story of Ciel, a young man whose mission is to solve mysteries for the Queen of England, he has the support of Sebastian Michaelis who is a demon with whom he has a contract that has the purpose of delivering his soul once the agreement is fulfilled. Ciel and Sebastian have a quite particular dynamic, they get along quite well and although we could say that a demon should not be trusted, they seem to have quite strong ties.

    image.png

    Source

The attraction of this anime has always been the mysteries that are investigated by this particular duo. These are dark, with shady secrets that draw the viewer's attention, but more striking is the way in which the events and the plot unfold as the suspects and facts are investigated. This is not a detective anime, but it is inevitable to feel at times that it is as it requires a lot of insight on the part of Ciel and Sebastian, but that is not a problem for them as they are actually very astute.

So, as I said before, each season has had different plots, the places and secondary characters vary and in that sense each arc has had a distinctive nuance, but they have always been interesting. For me in particular the arc “Book of Circus” (third season) has been the one I have liked the most so far, although the first season is also very good since it is there where we begin to understand what is the purpose of the central characters and where the mangaka wants to take us.

The “Public School Arc” (fourth season), takes us to Weston College which is one of the most prestigious in England. The problem there is that some of the students seem to have disappeared and in that sense the queen asks Ciel to investigate the reasons. Once at the school, we meet some very particular students who become indispensable to the plot as the chapters go by. Ciel is forced to try to join the elite groups in order to get closer to the school's director, who is the main suspect. Thus begin the plans and misadventures of Ciel and Sebastian to try to solve the mystery.

Black Butler: Public School Arc | OFFICIAL TRAILER

So far 9 chapters have been aired and at this point I can already conclude that this is the worst arc or season of all, the mysteries are not as attractive as the previous ones and while it is true that the new characters are quite colorful, they do not compare in charisma with those of previous seasons. It feels like a sort of filler that slows down the resolution of the different situations and in that sense everything feels very slow. I'm not saying I won't be entertained watching this season, but it definitely doesn't come close in quality and story depth to the previous ones. It remains to wait for the end of the season to determine if it raises the level, probably if it does, but for the moment we can only bet.

Throughout the story, Ciel and Sebastian will solve numerous mysteries and crimes, while facing the possibility of getting involved in the process.

I was very struck by its dark plot and by what seemed at first glance supernatural, which certainly has that essence but not as much as I expected, I imagined it a bit more macabre and murky to be honest, but the result is good.

We can see that the relationship between Sebastian and his "master" Ciel is somewhat acidic but they give him that yaoi vibe that certainly hooks the fujoshi, which in this particular anime was not my case, I certainly enjoyed the situations but they put Ciel in situations of "danger" which was already tedious because it was a constant too repetitive, I personally would have liked that some of those scenarios were about more cases to solve, because to me they become the most interesting.

Some of the secondary characters such as Ciel's "bondage" are ones that certainly surprise you, being so clumsy in their duties in the Phantomhive mansion you would never expect that they are in charge of Ciel's security and that they are so skilled is their I work when it is required, I wish they had had more time on stage.

We turn to the Shinigamis, we see that with William the relationship is one of mutual hatred but even so they come to accept the help of the other when it is required, with Grell the situation with Sebastián is totally different, because the shinigami every time he has the opportunity declares him his love for the butler, although the same thing happens with any attractive man who crosses his path, let's go with Ronald, I think he is the calmest, somewhat punctual but he makes an effort in his work since he wants to have the same level as Grell and William because he considers that they have an advantage, and then with Undertaker, I always thought he was a simple gravedigger and informant, well I was surprised that he was a shinigami, he is my favorite of the four, I know there are others, but only I will give my opinion of those who are for me the "main ones".

We see that the scythes they use are very advanced to be from the Victorian era, an example is that of Grell that for a period of time is a chainsaw, or that some have a wristwatch when it was used in a pocket

I can only comment on the anime, as the manga I have not read, but I understand that the anime writers deviated too much from the original content.

It is a really entertaining anime, but in my opinion it lacked more chapters, in my opinion the story of Ciel, gives much more, the potential it had seems to me that it was something wasted, because there are some situations that occur to me as I said very repetitive.

images(18).jpg In late-nineteenth century England, one year and three months after the dramatic conclusion of the original series, Kuroshitsuji II introduces a new butler and young master. The sadistic yet cheerful Alois Trancy has faced some harsh times. He was kidnapped as a baby, and was forced to work in a village as a slave. Gradually, he lost his parents, his best friend, and everyone he knew. Alois eventually returned home and became the head of his mansion, but seemed to exhibit some strange behavior ever since. Even more curiously, he returned with Claude Faustus, an enigmatic, emotionless butler with unfathomable talent

to say the anime was quite good I would give it 8.07 but story is pretty deep as Ciel parents deads made him take revenge so he made a contract with a demon called Sebastian to find the murderer of his parents and take revenge.

  13. Netflixing: Black Butler@talanhorne3627d

    First, a disclaimer:

This show is not for kids. It's an animated show, yes. Its main protagonist is a child, yes. But kids should not be watching this show.

I wouldn't have to make this disclaimer in any other country, but America, for some reason, automatically jumps to the conclusion that animation is always for children.

With that said, this is Black Butler.

In Black Butler, a young heir living in Victorian England has his life overturned when his parents are murdered. Desperate to punish their killers, he makes a pact with a demon, who agrees to serve him with perfect obedience until vengeance is served (with garnish!).

The demon warns young Ciel Phantomhive that the price for such a service will be the young boy's immortal soul, which will be devoured upon consummation of the contract, but Ciel readily agrees.

In order to remain inconspicuous, the demon takes the form of a butler named Sebastian Michaelis, but as simple as the arrangement seems, they are both in for quite a ride. Because it turns out that the Phantomhive family has a secret obligation to the queen of England. For generations, they have served as the hound of the monarchy, hunting down and punishing those criminals who are too dangerous or too devious for the police to catch. Only Ciel's determination and Sebastian's unnatural talents will be enough to put down all the monsters living in England's shadows.

Let's examine the various elements of the show.

    The Butler

Sebastian, for all outward appearances, is the paragon of butlery. Demure, genteel, and soft spoken, he always manages to keep up the charade he is playing, even though inside he is an insatiable monster.

His particular brand of magic is a little mystifying. While it is hinted that he can perform many wonders, most of these happen off screen. The stuff the audience sees comes mostly in the form of superhuman strength and speed. So he may, for instance, set all the tables in the dining room in half a minute or landscape the estate's entire grounds in only an hour, but all the work is still done manually. Which, when you see it, is more impressive than it would be if he just snapped his fingers and made stuff happen.

Ciel's demands are neverending, and each time a new task is set, the viewer is left wondering if Sebastian can really pull it off this time, but no matter what chore is given him, he answers simply (and in English), "Yes, my lord."

    The Stories

Ciel and Sebastian have many challenges set for them, not only in being the kind of gracious hosts that 19th century nobility were expected to be, but in being the queen's secret detectives as well.

One of the first story arcs has them going after Jack the Ripper, which never fails to engage from the outset to the vicious twist ending. Each new case brings them closer and closer to the killer of Ciel's parents, which will also bring the fulfillment of the contract with Sebastian and the promised soul-devouring.

The first season has a palpable "tightening of the noose" feeling as Ciel closes in on the victory that will surely kill him.

    The Desserts

Fantasy fiction is often known for its depiction of food. I've known people to read The Lord of the Rings just for its food descriptions (I wish I was joking).

Black Butler carries this tradition from the written page to the small screen by hosting fabulous desserts in many episodes. Often, a closeup of the confection will be shown with a title listing the dessert's name. The overall effect of this is to make the viewer hungry. And it works.

Such a small idiosyncrasy might not be worth mentioning, except that it fits in so well with the show's theme. Sebastian composes himself well, but he is still a hungry demon, dreaming of the day he will sate his own appetite, while he, as a butler, must stand at attention and watch people eating fine delicacies.

    The Controversies

As I said above, this is not a show for children.

The criminals hunted down by Ciel and Sebastian are not the halfwits that thrive in saturday morning cartoons. They are vicious killers, every one of them. And scenes of murder, physical abuse, corpse mutilation, and other atrocities are peppered throughout the series.

In the second season, these issues are further compounded by a subplot involving child sex trafficking, and though the worst parts of that are never shown, the narrative is not exactly gentle with the subject.

But all these pale against the real controversy surrounding the show, namely the relationship between Ciel and Sebastian itself. Sebastian washes and clothes his master (as was not unusual for servants in the Victorian era), and he often stares hungrily at Ciel (though it should be kept in mind that Sebastian is planning to literally eat him). Because of this, there is a lot of speculation that there is some kind of romantic involvement between the two, which would be wildly inappropriate, seeing as how Ciel is only 12 and Sebastian, while thousands of years old, has the appearance of a man in his 20s.

The show itself actually plays down this idea. The promotional materials for the show and the manga, however, go to great lengths to imply such a relationship, perhaps in an attempt to generate buzz by courting controversy.

Methinks they are trying too hard.

Honestly, I think that, in the show itself, you have to be looking for it in order to actually see anything. That said, I stand by my earlier statement: this is not a show for kids.

    The Supporting Cast

Ciel and Sebastian are not the only great part of this show! In fact, they are not even the best part. That title has to go to the excellent supporting cast.

Ciel's other servants serve as welcome comic relief. Each is horribly inept at their duties, forcing Sebastian to pick up the slack. And the ways that they fail only get more and more entertaining as the series progresses. Eventually, their true qualities are revealed, but I can't tell you what those are without spoilers.

But the thing that really makes the show shine are the reapers.

Not content with plain old scythes, these reapers use all kinds of garden implements to do their work. That work being the collection of souls at the moment of death. Which may seem exciting, but to a reaper, it's all one big bureaucracy. Never has death been so mundane, and the reapers are all too eager to spice up the experience any way they can.

Occasionally, they cross paths with Ciel and Sebastian, sometimes being helpful, and sometimes stirring up trouble. It makes for great tension.

    Conclusion

Black Butler is a show full of mature themes and situations, particularly death and vengeance. It is also a lot of fun to watch.

If I were to pick out one problem, it would be that the show has one or two glaring plot holes. By the end of the second season, you will have questions, with little hope of them ever being answered.

Two seasons are now on Netflix. If you liked this review, then be sure to catch the series.
