Hello everyone, Otaku friends of The Anime Realm, I hope you are all doing well, today I'm here to talk about a strange anime, many of you liked it, others not so much... and well, it's time for me to give you my opinion on it, today I'll talk about the anime: The Witch and the Beast, or Majo to Yajuu for those who know more, I got into it almost without knowing anything, I just saw some images that looked great, and believe me, it was quite a trip... let's see, imagine: a world that looks like it's straight out of a gothic novel, think of dark alleys, that semi-Victorian vibe, foggy stone streets... it has all that vibe, do you understand?
Very, very atmospheric, but the funny thing is that, although the world looks so old, the story, how the characters speak and everything, feels super current... that contrast, boom!, it works wonders, it draws you in. The plot goes like this and it hooked me right away: we follow Guideau, who seems like a young, half-wild girl, with incredibly intense eyes – seriously, they scream 'beast' – but who hides a HUGE secret, a curse that has her, traveling with her is Ashaf, an elegant, calm magician, always with his cigarette... and who carries a coffin! I mean, it's impossible to be more intriguing. And well, the duo dedicates themselves to hunting witches. It's like Ashaf's job, but Guideau is more like... a whirlwind that goes with him, but the most important thing is that Guideau has a VERY personal anger with one witch in particular, the one who put the curse on him... look, from the first chapter you realize that this isn't messing around.
Forget that it starts slowly, nothing like that! There’s some really powerful action here from almost the very first minute, with beheadings, people losing limbs… it sets a really dark, really raw tone from the very beginning, and it stays that way. To be honest, it did throw me off a bit at first, but in a good way. It was refreshing to see an anime that goes all in with its dark fantasy vibe, without fear of success, and the action scenes, many of which are captivating, especially when Guideau lets loose and unleashes her full power. She’s pure instinct, pure brute force, and that contrasts perfectly with Ashaf, who’s calmer, more into strategy and magic.
Hola a todos, amigos Otakus de The Anime Realm, espero que se encuentren muy bien, el día de hoy vengo a hablarles de un anime extraño, a muchos les gustó, a otros no tanto.. y bueno, es momento de que les dé mi opinión al respecto, hoy les hablaré del anime: The Witch and the Beast, o Majo to Yajuu pa' los que le saben más, yo le entré casi sin saber nada, nomás vi unas imágenes que se veían geniales, y créanme, fue todo un viaje.. a ver, imagínense: un mundo que parece sacado de una novela gótica, piensen en callejones oscuros, esa onda medio victoriana, calles de piedra con neblina... tiene todo ese rollo, ¿me entienden?
Muy, muy atmosférico, pero lo curioso es que, aunque el mundo se ve así antiguo, la historia, cómo hablan los personajes y todo, se siente súper actual.. ese contraste, ¡pum!, funciona de maravilla, te mete de lleno. La onda va así y me enganchó al toque: seguimos a Guideau, que parece una chava joven, medio salvaje, con unos ojos intensísimos – en serio, te gritan 'bestia' – pero que esconde un secreto GIGANTE, una maldición que la tiene, con ella viaja Ashaf, un mago todo elegante, calmado, siempre con su cigarrito... ¡y que carga un ataúd! o sea, más intrigante imposible, y bueno, el dúo se dedica a cazar brujas. Es como el trabajo de Ashaf, pero Guideau es más bien... un torbellino que va con él, pero lo más importante es que Guideau tiene una rabia MUY personal con una bruja en específico, la que le echó la maldición.. miren, desde el primer capítulo te das cuenta que esto no se anda con juegos.
Olvídense de que empieza lento, ¡nada que ver! Aquí hay acción bien potente casi desde el minuto uno, decapitaciones, gente perdiendo miembros... desde el principio marca un tono bien oscuro, bien crudo, y se mantiene así, la verdad, al principio sí me sacó un poco de onda, pero para bien.. Se sintió refrescante ver un anime que le entra con todo a su rollo de fantasía oscura, sin miedo al éxito, y las escenas de acción, muchas son de esas te cautivan, sobre todo cuando Guideau se desata y saca el full power. Ella es puro instinto, pura fuerza bruta, y eso contrasta genial con Ashaf, que es más calmado, más de estrategia y magia.
Okay, what about the witches? Forget about them being your typical misunderstood or cool ones, nothing to do with it, at least almost never, here the series does get right into how brutal they are, seriously! Their methods are truly scary and they leave chaos everywhere... mind you, they're not your typical filler villains, they have a whole backstory, they drop clues about super-ancient lineages (they're called "Origin Witches") and they even have unique details, like a mark, the 'Ultoma', that appears when they cast really powerful magic... that's when you realize that magic in this world is serious business: it's powerful, dangerous, and ordinary people are terrified of it, and with good reason, because of a really dark past they drag around.
Something I loved was how they mixed genres, obviously, it's fantasy, it has a ton of action, but suddenly, boom! They give you terror and a lot of mystery... there are arcs that really dig in with the terror, I remember one perfectly, I think it was like the third episode, which literally seemed like a mini horror movie... it was about a really murky family drama, connected to a witch who had a hobby... let's say pretty horrible, that involved children... and it was great, the crazy thing is that, in the middle of so much darkness, it touches you on some sensitive nerves that you don't even expect. And then, the subject changes... there are parts that feel like detective stories, with Ashaf and Guideau following the trail of magical serial killers, piecing together clues that may be forbidden grimoires, ancient curses... that kind of thing, and that's great because it keeps everything fresh, it's not just watching blows one after the other, you know?
A ver, ¿y las brujas? Olvídense de que son las típicas incomprendidas o buena onda, nada que ver, al menos casi nunca, aquí la serie sí se mete de lleno en lo brutales que son, ¡en serio! Sus métodos dan miedo de verdad y van dejando un caos por todos lados.. ojo, no son las típicas villanas de relleno, les arman toda una historia detrás, te sueltan pistas de linajes súper antiguos (les dicen "Brujas de Origen") y hasta tienen detalles únicos, como una marca, la 'Ultoma', que les aparece cuando tiran magia bien potente.. ahí te das cuenta que la magia en este mundo es cosa seria: es poderosa, peligrosa, y la gente común le tiene un pánico tremendo, y con justa razón, por todo un pasado bien oscuro que arrastran.
Algo que me encantó fue cómo mezclan los géneros, obvio, es fantasía, tiene un montón de acción, pero de repente ¡pum! te meten terror y bastante misterio.. hay arcos que se clavan durísimo en el terror, me acuerdo perfecto de uno, creo que fue como por el tercer capítulo, que parecía literal una mini peli de terror.. iba de un drama familiar bien turbio, conectado con una bruja que tenía un hobby... digamos que bastante horrible, que involucraba niños... y estuvo genial, lo loco es que, en medio de tanta oscuridad, te toca unas fibras sensibles que ni te esperas. Y después, cambia el tema.. hay partes que se sienten como de detectives, con Ashaf y Guideau siguiéndole la pista a asesinos en serie mágicos, juntando pistas que si grimorios prohibidos, que si maldiciones antiguas.. ese tipo de cosas, y eso está genial porque mantiene todo fresco, no es nomás ver golpes uno tras otro, ¿sabes?
And the world they built is really incredible. They introduce things like necromancy, and not just like, "Oh, that's bad magic," but they make you think about whether it's right or wrong to use it in this society. They also introduce you to other groups, like the Paladins – who are basically holy knights who fight against magical threats – and that adds more flavor to the power struggles and conflicts. I liked how they tell you things. Sometimes they use a narrator to explain the rules of the world or some concept, and you'd say, "Oh, how lazy," but you know what? It works really well! This way you don't run into those weird scenes where characters explain things they should already know, like Ashaf telling Guideau what a cloud is, imagine... it helps you quickly get into this complex world, to understand who's who: the Holy Church that rules everything, the Paladins who are supposed to be neutral and peacemakers, the Executors who are very dark and just want to erase all the witches, and Ashaf's own group, the Order of Magical Resonance, who seem more interested in controlling and understanding magic, whether good or evil.
You learn how magic works - writing formulas, using runes - it all feels pretty neat... but anyway, let's get back to the main characters because, seriously, they are the heart of all this. Guideau is all badass, driven by pure rage against the one who cursed her, and seems to not give a damn about anyone, she's impulsive, violent, and all she wants is to get back to her original form. And then there's Ashaf, the calm, super serene guy who seems cool, always trying to steer Guideau down the right path, even if sometimes he has to pull the strings a little. He has some rune tattoos on his arm that are, pff!, they add points to his mysterious magician vibe, the chemistry between them is brutal! It's a constant push and pull between instinct and head, fury and calm. Ashaf seems determined to show Guideau that life is more than pure revenge, and watching how their relationship changes, which at first is forced, is something that draws you in.
You really feel how those very different energies sometimes clash, but other times, boom!, they connect perfectly to finish off the monster or magician that stands in front of them. The series is often organized as investigative cases, which last two or three chapters... and that format works wonderfully, because it gives each mini-story a chance to breathe, to develop its own mystery and its characters, before moving on to the next. And they're geniuses at leaving you hooked at the end... almost every episode ends in a way that makes you say "Nooo, I need to see what's next!" Sometimes they even drop the bomb on you halfway through the episode, keeping you glued to the screen, always trying to guess what's going to happen.
Y el mundo que armaron, laverdad está increíble, meten cosas como la nigromancia, y no solo como "ah, magia mala y ya", sino que te ponen a pensar en si está bien o mal usarla en esta sociedad, también te presentan a otros grupos, como los Paladines – que son básicamente caballeros sagrados que se rifan contra amenazas mágicas – y eso le mete más sabor a las peleas de poder y los conflictos.. me gustó cómo te van contando las cosas. A veces usan un narrador para explicarte las reglas del mundo o algún concepto, que tú dirías "ay, qué flojera", pero ¿saben qué? ¡Funciona súper bien! Así no te topas con esas escenas raras donde los personajes se explican cosas que ya deberían saber, como si Ashaf le dijera a Guideau qué es una nube, imagínense.. te ayuda a entrarle rápido a este mundo tan complejo, a entender quién es quién: que si la Iglesia Sagrada que manda en todo, los Paladines que se supone son neutrales y pacificadores, los Ejecutores que son bien darks y solo quieren borrar a todas las brujas, y el propio grupo de Ashaf, la Orden de la Resonancia Mágica, que parece que les interesa más controlar y entender la magia, sea buena o mala.
Aprendes cómo funciona la magia – que si escribir fórmulas, usar runas – todo se siente bien armadito.. pero bueno, volvamos a los protas porque, ¡en serio!, ellos son el corazón de todo esto. Guideau es toda ruda, movida por pura rabia contra quien la maldijo, y parece que le vale madre todo el mundo, es impulsiva, violenta, y lo único que quiere es recuperar su forma original. Y luego está Ashaf, el tipo tranquilo, súper sereno, que parece buena onda, siempre tratando de llevar a Guideau por el buen camino, aunque a veces tenga que mover los hilos un poquito, tiene unos tatuajes de runas en el brazo que están ¡pff!, le suman puntos a su onda de mago misterioso, la química entre ellos es ¡brutal! Es un constante estira y afloja entre el instinto y la cabeza, la furia y la calma, Ashaf parece empeñado en mostrarle a Guideau que la vida es más que pura venganza, y ver cómo va cambiando su relación, que al principio es a fuerzas, es algo que te atrapa.
De verdad sientes cómo esas energías tan distintas a veces chocan, pero otras veces ¡pum!, se conectan perfecto para acabar con el monstruo o el mago que se les ponga enfrente, la serie muchas veces se organiza como en casos de investigación, que duran dos o tres capítulos.. y ese formato funciona de maravilla, porque le da chance a cada mini-historia de respirar, de desarrollar su propio misterio y sus personajes, antes de pasar a la siguiente. Y son unos genios para dejarte picado al final.. casi todos los capítulos terminan de una forma que dices "¡Nooo, necesito ver qué sigue ya!", a veces hasta te sueltan la bomba a mitad del capítulo, te tiene pegado a la pantalla, siempre tratando de adivinar qué va a pasar.
Let’s see, something that I found really cool, especially towards the end of the season, is how they handle the “monsters” and the bad guys… at first, they paint the witches as the enemy, the really bad guys, pure terror, but as things progress, especially in the final arc that has to do with a different type of witch and a demonic sword (that idea is really cool, by the way!), they seem to start to erase that clear line… they start to show you these figures not only as pure evil, but as characters with their own stories, their problems, even with issues that you can identify with! It doesn't stay with the typical "good guys vs. bad guys," but rather presents more real people, with their nuances, and that's always appreciated... it adds a really cool depth, it makes you doubt who the real monsters are at times. I felt like the series was maturing its own vibe, at the same time that Guideau, little by little, perhaps, was beginning to care about something more than his curse.
Now... is it perfect? Hmm, well no, the animation sometimes seems to falter, it's uneven... yes, thinking about it, there were moments, especially in the most epic fights, where I felt like they used more still images that looked a bit too cool, instead of super fluid animation. They showed you some really dynamic shots, yes, but they didn't always move as much as one would expect. For me, it wasn’t something that ruined the experience.. the overall drawing style is strong, the character designs are great and the atmosphere is so dense you could cut it with a knife.. for me the story, the characters, the world and that dark and exciting vibe made up for those flaws in the animation.. I was totally invested in Guideau and Ashaf’s journey, intrigued by the mysteries and honestly, I was surprised by some of the twists.
The season ends leaving you totally hooked with one of those endings that kills you, preparing what seems like a change to an even more Victorian, even half steampunk vibe, for what follows, as if they’re going to get into a horror classic.. it left me wanting more, so, my final verdict: I would give The Witch and the Beast a solid 8/10.. the story, the characters, how they built the world and the atmosphere are luxurious. It's dark, bloody, it intrigues you and hits you in ways you don't expect, the animation may be a weak point for some, and that's perhaps why I don't give it a higher rating, but without a doubt what lifts this series is its story, the complexity of its personalities and the setting... and well, that's all for today, I hope to see you in the next reviews, take care! A ver, algo que me pareció bien cabrón, sobre todo ya casi al final de la temporada, es cómo manejan a los "monstruos" y a los malos.. al principio, te pintan a las brujas como el enemigo, las malas malísimas, puro terror, pero conforme avanza la cosa, especialmente en el arco final que tiene que ver con un tipo diferente de bruja y una espada demoníaca (¡que esa idea está súper chida, por cierto!), como que empiezan a borrar esa línea tan clara.. te empiezan a mostrar a estas figuras no solo como pura maldad, sino como personajes con sus propias historias, sus problemas, ¡hasta con cuestiones con los que te puedes identificar! No se queda en el típico "buenos contra malos", sino que te presenta gente más real, con sus matices, y eso, siempre se agradece.. le mete una profundidad bien chida, te hace dudar de quiénes son los verdaderos monstruos a veces, sentí como que la serie iba madurando su propia onda, a la par que Guideau, poco a poquito, tal vez, empezaba a preocuparse por algo más que su maldición.
Ahora... ¿es perfecta? Mmm, pues no, la animación a veces como que flaquea, que no es pareja.. sí, pensándolo bien, hubo momentos, más que nada en las peleas más épicas, donde sentí que usaban más imágenes fijas que se veían poca madre, en lugar de animación súper fluida, te ponían unas tomas bien dinámicas, sí, pero no siempre se movían tanto como uno esperaría. Para mí, no fue algo que me arruinara la experiencia.. el estilo de dibujo en general está potente, los diseños de personajes geniales y la atmósfera es tan densa que la podrías cortar con cuchillo.. para mí la historia, los personajes, el mundo y esa vibra oscura y emocionante compensaron esas fallas en la animación.. estaba metidísimo en el viaje de Guideau y Ashaf, intrigado con los misterios y la neta, sí me sorprendieron algunos giros.
La temporada termina dejándote súper picado con un final de esos que te matan, preparando lo que parece un cambio a un rollo todavía más victoriano, hasta medio steampunk, para lo que sigue, como que le van a entrar a un clásico del terror.. me dejó con unas ganas tremendas de más, así que, mi veredicto final: yo le daría a The Witch and the Beast un sólido 8/10.. la historia, los personajes, cómo armaron el mundo y la atmósfera están de lujo. Es oscura, sangrienta, te intriga y te pega en las emociones de formas que no te esperas, la animación tal vez sea un punto débil para algunos, y por eso quizás no le doy más calificación, pero sin duda lo que levanta a esta serie es su historia, lo complicado de sus personalidades y la ambientación.. y bueno, hasta aquí todo por hoy, espero que nos veamos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense mucho! For some reason, the character design of the show really interested me.
I'm not really one to watch or read dark anime minus the popular ones (JJK and Tokyo Ghoul) which are still Shōnen.
This show's character design is different from the round strokes and friendly faces of JJK and instead go for sharper, mysterious dark faces like those seen in Noblesse or Castlevania.
Lovely character designs and animations lead to great fights.
This was well proven in this anime where the magic didn't stop the characters from getting close and personal in high tension brawls and nobody brawled better than Guideau.
Watching her fight is graceful and entertaining, moving through different forms of martial arts, giving and taking a whole lot of damage, she really is a sight to behold.

Realmente no soy alguien que vea o lea anime oscuro menos los populares (JJK y Tokyo Ghoul) que siguen siendo Shōnen.
